Did 330,000km in my X5 E70 3.0 diesel. Not even a check engine light at all..ever! My car was serviced regularly through BMW, had a full service history and driven a combination of highway/city driving. I drove it across Australia 4 times without a problem which was primarily desert conditions in temperatures over 110 degrees consistently. Just traded it on a 2021 X5 and couldn't be happier.
Just found this video randomly in my feed. I wanted to chime-in about my ownership experience on a 2013 E70 35d: I purchased a 2013 E70 35d used in 2015 and have have been driving it on a daily basis for all 6 years of ownership. The 35d handles exceptionally well for a large SUV. Although there is a tiny bit of turbo lag when launching from a stop, it has more than enough power/torque to effortlessly pass other vehicles on the highway. Highway performance is above average - Touring/"road trips" with mostly highway driving, I'm able to exceed 500 miles on a single tank. Issues: Aside from wear items such as tires & brakes, I have only only experienced two occurences of one minor issue where Nox sensors in the exhaust got dirty and tripped a check engine light. This is due to my X5 being configured for California emissions - so may not be an issue in other areas. BMW replaced the sensors under warranty on both incidents since dirty sensors is a known issue in the US. As a result, BMW has extended the warranty for exhaust to 10 years, or 120,000 miles (265k km), so I'm covered for at least another 2 years before I'd need to pay to replace another sensor (if required).
I owned 2 of them in few years I had one fault for maf sensor This is the best diesel in the world, combining performance, fuel economy and reliability
I really enjoyed mine. A beautiful car to own and drive. It was a certified so all repairs got me a loaner. Can’t tell you it was a problem child at all. I kept a 335d for my kid and it was also a superb low cost car.
Best diesel in the world? That’s pretty lofty! Try a VW/Audi 3.0 TDI sometime in a Touareg or the Q. Both ride, handle, and perform like a true hero. And the amazing 4Motion/Quattro system is considerably more capable off-road.
Just bought my first beemer, 2012 X5 D, fully deleted with a Malone stage 2 tune. Gotta say, this is the coolest and most thrilling suv I’ve ever owned. I bought it with 230k miles on it, and it runs like an absolute champ. Don’t be afraid to snag a high mileage one as long as it’s been deleted and maintained well.
I can agree 1000%, getting one myself in couple days.. 2 of my friends have them and one has 297,000km the other 320,000 and never heard them run into any issues. Both are stage 1 and stage 2 with everything deleted
Man reading all this negative issues and seeing this, I must have had the only diesel E70 in American that had ZERO problems. I had many issues with my 2008 X5 4.8 litter. Now that was a nightmare.
I have a 4.8i and you're so right about a nightmare. I've fix or repaired so many oil leaks and coolant leaks. I definitely don't want another BMW period. Nothing but a money pit. My son is in to BMW's . I've never own a diesel or turbo vehicle and he suggested this. Gonna have to think long and hard about one.
switched from C-Class (W204) to BMW 328d (2018) and could not be happier the fuel economy is beyond impressive the torque is absolutely killing I used to pay between $600 to $1000 per year service cost for the Merc the cost of 2019 service cost was $0 I'm glad that put my over blown ego aside and went for the BMW diesel this time so far 0 regret
Glad that most of the issues you stated seemed to be not too bad to fix DIY. was looking into getting a cheap BMW for more DIYing and modding. and since I already have a 335i daily, thought I'd get an X5 for those times I need a big trunk too! and if I do f something up, I won't be stuck without a car. seems like the X5 diesel tunes just as nicely as the petrol but with loads more torque :)
I’d have to say, I’m impressed with your desire to self service the beemers, and I’d have to agree the same thing, you state at the end of this, “love them” well our E70 is the 4.8, goes like a race car, upwards of $120 a week in fuel, but unless you can afford to service at a dealership or repair these things, they can be costly.

Great comment, and yes, generally I mix up the servicing, sometimes I do it and sometimes I let them do it, but either way a person should be able to afford to run these cars and they are not short of maintenance intensive. For me I can afford to pay the dealer but often I have found lead time on a scheduled appointment can be long where I live here and other times I look at the task and ask myself.....why leave $ 500.00 on the table when I can do this. I have a x5 09 35d and I have done 113,000 since new and I have had external res for def fail and I replaced. One mass airflow fail and glow plug module. I've been thru 4 sets of tires and yearly oil change. And I love it. It's now the 3rd car in my driveway but it's been amazing my wife loves it.
I purchased a preowned 09 X5 35d with @70000 miles in 2014. Only first two months happy.... then nightmare... Dpf, mass air flow, oil leak....It was at the dealer almost 2 months out of total 6months ownership. I had thought diesel vehicle would last long which is partially true, but emission system faulty. It is so costly to replace. After 6 years, I still suffer from side-effects of the X5 ownership, paying $600 every month for buick compact car which was purchased in exchange of the non-sustainable car. I respect X5 diesel owners for their dedication and cost. Good luck guys.
@@robcar4906 you need to go to a tune shop. All the diesel emissions need to be deleted because they have carbon build up. Then delete the swirl flaps and do a stage 1 tune. The car will go a million miles
6:00 wow, you would think that a German manufacturer would know how to handle the cold, but then you remember they are the same people who tried to invade Russia in winter and failed miserably so you understand why they can't come up with a heated DEF system.
we used to have an E70 3.0d 2007 model - heaps of problems ranging from broken rear diff, oil leaks, PCV valve stuck, parking brake button snap etc etc It was a lemon, im glad you got rid of it!
I have a 2009 3.0d. Had 1 airbag fail in the rear suspension,Glow plug controller, egr vacuum control solenoid, 1 fuel injector and glow plugs. Over 5 years and to be expected with a car on this mileage . Car has 90k miles on it now. Also the rear fog lights stop working as there is rust on the contact points. I need to clean them once a year or so. Basically I learnt don't scrimp on parts. The egr controller I used a cheaper part at the time and the cars ecu hated it. Bought a oem part and it cleared up instantly. In Europe most bmws have dpfs rather than add blue. Don't drive short distances, if you do then once a month do a motorway blast once a month to get everything to run at full temps. Look after the intake side injectors, egr valve ect and exhaust, turbo, use decent fuel.
Bmw has you brainwashed. These parts are not supposed to fail that quick. The biggest problem with Bmw is that they use regular parts on high performance cars, and it ends up breaking. I work with a guy that loves Bmw. He basically told me it is a great car if you like working on cars.
@@drjd2real I work on my own car. Changed glow plugs in Jan 2020 with cheaper than normal. Oem parts. They failed after 3 months, all 6!!!. They were burnt dead, pay shit money get shit results. The cheaper egr valve controller I purchased initially gave crap immediately after installing., went back and bought pierburg.... Problem gone. 3 litre diesel engine producing nearly 300bhp is a high performance engine. Can't scrimp on parts, asking to be kicked in the balls.
Good review. One heads up which might help you and others though... I’ve always avoided allowing my diesel fuel tank to fall below a quarter tank. This might be overkill, but it’s been my experience that crud sometimes collects in the bottom of diesel tanks. If you don’t draw fuel from the bottom of your tank, you stand a better chance of not experiencing plugged up fuel filters or worse yet, having stuff you don’t want sent on to your injectors going to them. Exactly dude, diesel fuel carries itself sooo small metals, and in the tank after some time they go to bottom, if you keep car tank over half always your fuel filters, pomps and fuel system will be safe. Of course time to time fuel and engine treatments are effective to clean up your system. More than 8 years have experience with diesel cars. They are sweet harts. If you always pay proper attention regarding oil, diesel and good treatment it will secure you from bad surprise maintenance costs.
I have an E53 3.0d work and kid truck. It has now done 330,000kms. I want to update to an F15 model but the bloody thing won't die. Admittingly I am an engineer who fixes everything myself but really not much has gone wrong apart from wear and tear items and a few sensors.
@@ECPP The car does not really have any resale but everything works apart from the parking sensors. Few dings and scratches however I don't worry too much where I park it at night. I nearly purchased an X6 M50d last week. I could not justify getting it trashed with work use. Loved the car thought. Plenty of power and economy.
When i was young and dumb my first car was a 330i. First 50,000 miles were wonderful and after that the ugly side started showing. My car was in the shop at least every 2 to 3 months. I dropped so much money into it. Luckily I had a my Chevy truck (RELIABLE) to move in. After that car was making me go broke, i just had to sell it. I love the way they look but i would never make the mistake of buying another BMW. Everytime i see an X5 i want one, but i know after the honeymoon miles what happens
I have the same. Almost 200k on the engine... Lots of wear and tear breakdown, but fixed by myself with basic tools watching UA-cam videos. No real mechanic experience. Parts mostly $35-100 on eBay. Runs like a dream still 🤷♂️
Let me give you this advice, bmw for people who knows how to fix them. Parts are same price like any other car. If you don’t know how to fix them yourself don’t buy one and complain
Theirs a old jcb digger parked for years and one day the owner started the engine and it started working without any hassle. The hydroulic system was working fine, no issues. They should use a jcb hydraulic suspension because it last for a very long time.
Great video. Thanks. I've owned my USA 2009 X5 diesel since new. Like you I just love the car. I've driven the F15 and found it rather bland in comparison. Also had pretty much the same issues you have. 1). Vacuum lines replacing - look its a rubber hose in a really horrible environment. They will need to be replaced. Nothing lasts forever :-) 2. The famous Thermostat replacement. This one is important because if the thermostat isn't working correctly, no regens ...which means issues with exhaust system later. 3). The whole EGR and sensors .. a known issue and campaign to replace. 4). and now the glow plug problem. I'm at 137K miles so pretty much at that point where they seem to fail. Its either the glow plugs or the glow plug controller (or both) that needs replacing. 5) and the one thats looming in the distance is the DPF (Diesel particle filter). That is close to end of life. Again, although with Regen you convert soot to ash ... in the end DPF will fill up with ash ..and thats it. Thats unfortunately an expensive part and expensive to fix. Oh well ... I didn't have the issue with the rear suspension. That is unique to vehicles equipped with 3rd row seats that have that suspension fitted.
My oldies have a 12yr X5 with 150 thousand km on it and Have never had a problem with it, meanwhile I bought a brand-new Toyota Hilux and it’s been a warranty pig 🐖 🤷♂️ Luck of the draw with cars I think
A friend bought a brand new hi lux 5 years ago. A small saloon car hit the rear of the hi lux on the toe bar and scrapped the truck due to a bent chassis over the rear axle. They are no longer bullet proof.
Probably the car came out on the production line on a Friday....they usually don't get the attention-to-detail every car off the production line receives.
My Ford has 196k miles on the odometer. I have routinely changed the oil, trans fluid 3 times, fuel filters 8 times , Brakes 3 times, Brake fluid 4 times, tires 4 times. Never a check engine light, never a breakdown or urgent service needed. Bought it new when I traded in my three year old BMW Diesel that I bought new. But after 50k miles and 7 stays at the dealer, totaling 2months, it was time to say good bye. To own a BMW is challenging, to own a BMW out of Warranty is Foolish.
I completely disagree with your comments. The X5 3.0D is extremely reliable. Very cheap to run. The only design fault is weak internal door carrier. Otherwise it is fantastic, especially the older 6-speed E53.
The most dangerous with the e70 diesel is if has the bosch cp4 pump. If the pumps fails, you will get metal fragments I your whole diesel system. Pumps, injectors, sensors and a lot of hours washing all the pipes and tank. 10k!
I love this car's diesel engine (euro spec, no DEF from factory 🎉) but my problem with this car is the quality of its plastics. They're everywhere in the engine bay and diesels run hot, especially turbocharged diesels. I've had to replace the plastic engine partitions, the plastic radiator fan, the coolant cap and even the grommets that hold the plastic engine cover. A few weeks ago, one of the headlights went off. Turns out the plastic sheath of the headlamps' wiring degraded and fell into bits inside the assembly, leaving the wiring exposed to shorts. Never seen that happen to any car. Inside, the plastic door pulls also degraded and turned sticky. The rolling plastic cupholder cover also turned sticky and broke in two. The dash has held up well but joints in the interior trims creak and squeak from plastic dryness. Aftermarket replacements for these parts are cheap and, if where you live labor is not expensive (as in my case), this is more of an inconvenience. Some I DIY. But it's annoying having these small things pop up more and more frequently. As I read elsewhere on YT, "the N57 engine may hold up to eternity while the rest of the car may crumble around it."
I have E60 with the same engine and i love it, i have it tune to 340 hp and 680 nm. Bro can you confirm that your engine is twin turbo cuz I’ve heard that for USA market they aren’t twin turbo, but I’m not sure what is the case with Canadian market. Great video as usual!
The DEF fluid is actually ureea which is used on the airports runways to melt the snow. They don’t use salt due to corrosion on aircrafts. In my opinion, if the fluid is turning into a gel at extreme low temperature, then probably should add some additives. Now, at minus 30 Celsius even the gasoline cars are struggling, nothing really works properly, oil is thick, battery is low, relays and switches gets stuck. I remember one very cold winter in Montreal, early in the morning, the wheels bottom portion were frozen flat and felt like I was driving on a bumpy road. The door handle ripped of the door, mirror fell of the windshield, transmision got stuck in the first gear.
I own a 2015 35d with 80,000 miles in the USA. I have had no issues except oil changes and filter changes. I admit I have never cleaned the intake and valves so this may hit me soon but so far a great car. I get about 31mpg on the highway and about 21 in the City.
Thank you for the video great job, I'm torn about buying a 2018 35d from a friend who's coming off a lease. Low kilometres and somewhat a good price. Just worried about having a diesel engine. I've had gas engines all life. There's a UA-camr named Scotty who says stay away from diesel engines. They become a money pit once the vehicle becomes old. :(
Scotty says stay away from everything except a base Toyota and thats OK if economy and reliability are the ONLY goals. The other side of the coin are those people like us who have better taste and enjoy the driving experience. The 35d does and may have a few issues along the way but we still love ours and would do it all over again but unfortunately the diesels are being discontinued due to emissions standards, Expect rear air ride issues which is not a bad fix in most cases, DEF Tank Heater which has a hidden recall that they usually cover on lower mile cars but will not advertise, and possibly glow plugs. Other than that pretty solid. They are not as cheap as a Toyota Corolla, but they offer up the better experience, by far.
BMW. Gotta pay to play. You have money to buy it better have money to maintain it. Although maintenance and repairs done at the dealer will add up to a price of a toyota yaris. Depends oh how you want to spend your money. Best option if you like the brand and dont want to brake the bank on maintenance/repair. Lease it and get rid of it when warranty is out
King Midas check out tunemyeuro, it’s the most recommended tune, they do some awesome work. I’m getting mine done by vast performance in Michigan right now, they did great on the VW I just had them do so hopefully they do just as well with my x5.

I like my 2011 X5 diesel just hit 385,000 MI I did not buy the vehicle it was left to me when my uncle passed away it had 22,000 miles on it in 2017 . Garage kept from Naples Florida. Now it's been in New Jersey the rest of its life and still going I don't like a couple things about it like the bifold glove box the armrest the sunroof everything works I just don't like the design and I don't like how the headlights fade it I had to do that three times so far get them cleaned up with a kit other than that runs great service was done one of my buddies is a tech works on diesels very reasonable mechanic and my other vehicle is my 69 Chevy pickup truck it's was in the family since day one it was my father's that's my hot rod slash summertime vehicle with air conditioning at it 327 is worked nice head nice cam nice posi rear all around gears for the highway and she showroom condition. I would not buy the BMW X5 but I'm very surprised how many miles that it's going and still going strong lucky no major issues this regular service and the paint still like new wax it clean it seats don't have rips some wear very nice to have in rain snow . Not my cup of tea but left to me I never thought it would go so many miles and still going
I have 335d and a e70 x5d. The 3 series ive had 0 issues for 60k miles and the x5 had a clear history when i bought it at 70k miles. I tuned it a month later and running at 120k miles with 0 issues. Your engine bay is disgusting. Buy a Corolla if you want something perfectly reliable.

I also have a 2009 x5 desiel, with only 28k miles, and just recently replaced the small turbo. It runs strong now. But I'll have to deal with the air blowing very weak on the dash. I already replaced the cabin air filter, but that didn't help. And I'm thinking something clogging in the air ducts?
I've been going through a lot of your videos to see how much repairs cost on this car. I'm looking at one with ~120k km and I'm worried it'll need a lot of work up front. I know the glow plugs cost about$1200cad at the dealer, but do you have a list of how much other repairs/parts cost and if you did them yourself or had a dealer do them?

I have shown issues with REAR AIR BAG REPAIRS, INTAKE SHUTTLE VALVE ISSUE, VACUUM LINES, GLOW PLUGS, OIL SERVICE a couple of times, etc.
I had an x5, 745, now a 750 Lix, everytime you go into BMW they want atleast 1,000. That’s how it works. Get a warranty or don’t buy unless you got that paper train

i got a 2013 x5 gasoline my only real issue with it right now is the run flat tires ... i had to replace one by the 2nd month i had it and all it had was a slow leak and was basically a brand new tire @ the time .... and 4 months in i got another slow leak in another tire that has almost brand new tread on it .... smh!!! but imma ride this one out lmao ! ... however when i did research this car before buying alot of owners did say they were swapping the runflats for regular tires but mainly it was for a more smoother ride ......
I'm buying one of these soon, I was aware of the airbag suspension as most air bags seem to deteriorate and fail eventually, already price checked some so I can replace them right away haha. I was also aware of the issues with the EGR and emissions system as a whole, FOURTUNATELY I live in an area that does not test for emissions and I can get away with deleting it all and re-tuning. That park fault was very weird, have you ever found out anything else about it?
@@Electricday27 I did, sooner than I thought I would due to DEF tank related codes. Turns out, the DPF at the least has already been replaced, (and whoever did it did a terrible job reassembling the vehicle.) It was not a fun, easy, or inexpensive task, but the payoff was well worth it. I'm getting about 3 or 4 mpg increase at 70mph, and the power is great!
I wouldn't go with pirellis , just go with regular tires not the Run flat tire, and be prepared to fix your tire on your own or have AAA to help you out

im getting a 200,000 km 2011 x5 diesel inspected soon. I am actually in edmonton as well. Is that a terrible idea if it checks out mechanically? I know theres a DEF heater issue. I m planning on keeping to 400k or so as long as its not more than a couple thousand of maintenance a year, vs leasing a more expensive new model. id also keep mine in a garage. i should add, at a german car shop that specializes mostly in beamers. i bring my volks there, rates are reasonable.
Well, get this one BMW X5 owners. Maybe I should have gone with diesel? I have a 2014 X5 xDrive35i purchased pre-cert with 29K miles on it. Rides like a Wrangler. Horrible. Zero space in the back for legroom. So, my certification ends at the end of the month but the dealer called me and told me I blew a strut and had a crack in my air intake duct. So, I have these pictures of the leaking strut now the dealer is telling me that I have to pay for it! I only have 39k miles on the thing as of 2 weeks ago, as it is still at the shop. So, I ask how long should a strut last. Got nowhere, the service guys are great as but if you do one side, they should do the other at no cost I have never heard of a strut blowing because of a pothole. So, my purchasing experience of my 1st BMW was miserable. Save yourself a lot of money and time and get an SUV not made by BMW. Hey, if you do want one to get a brand new one it will ride nice for about 30k miles. Also, I know that the truck was in an accident but that is another story.

Yea my girlfriend brother who is a lawyer had this same X5 and let me tell you it was a nightmare for him, it was literally in the shop every month, he’s a lawyer so he had the money, he got fed up and junked it, he bought a Porsche, you have two of the most notorious money pit bimmers, the m5 that you have, and this diesel X5 you’re a very brave man for owning two of bmw most notorious money pit machines.

I purchased a 2018 BMW X5 xdrive35d M sport/Executive package and a third row seat and AWD with 38,500 miles for my daughter and her family. It is still in warranty for one more year. I purchased an extended warranty for 3 more years and a maintenance agreement for 4 years. I wanted her to have a safe family car. My daughter wanted a diesel. They thought the towing capacity is better with a Diesel engine. I added a tow hitch at BMW which cost a pretty penny. I thought the Audi Q7 was a better choice with a third row seat included and many have the tow hitch as well. Would you keep this beyond the warranty at the 7 year point or should I trade? Her family is growing up and the X5 might be cramped for a family of 5.

The rear suspension is the most annoying failure as it drives like rubbish afterwards ruining the experience... switched to coils so solved now but was a massive pain in the ass (literally) Still havecto delete swirl flaps and egr if I can get away with it then do some drivetrain servicing, body and interior trim repairs as well Its generally good but bmws need a bitbof babying and tlc or will give you $pain in return...
BMWs are great cars, but after 10 years, the quality is an absolute JOKE. The older ones held up much better, but after 2006 they are built like weed trimmers. Everything goes downhill at once. I hear cars in moderate climates fare better than ones in the sunbelt states.
I live it and I still have it but it now has about 200,000 kms or 120,000 miles. Rear suspension was an issue but I retrofitted to coil springs and it’s good now
Got my oil pan gasket and engine oil filter housing gasket coming for replacement after BMW identified them as defects because of minor oil leaks when having recalls done on a 2013 E70 35i. They charge me $3k for the job but that's not good enough to me. The local German auto mechanic charges me $1.6k for the same work which will take about 10hrs to perform but will give peace of mind for quite some time.

I was thinking about a diesel long and hard but the more I consider the value I place on reliability a modest, mass produced NA gas engine just seems like the best choice.
Bondominator most common issues on the diesels are emissions related, if you live somewhere you can get away with a delete it’s very reliable, and with a good tune it’s pretty fast for an suv, but a delete and tune will add several thousand to the cost

I really enjoyed mine. A beautiful car to own and drive. It was a certified so all repairs got me a loaner. Can’t tell you it was a problem child at all. I kept a 335d for my kid and it was also a superb low cost car.
Best diesel in the world? That’s pretty lofty! Try a VW/Audi 3.0 TDI sometime in a Touareg or the Q. Both ride, handle, and perform like a true hero. And the amazing 4Motion/Quattro system is considerably more capable off-road.
Just bought my first beemer, 2012 X5 D, fully deleted with a Malone stage 2 tune. Gotta say, this is the coolest and most thrilling suv I’ve ever owned. I bought it with 230k miles on it, and it runs like an absolute champ. Don’t be afraid to snag a high mileage one as long as it’s been deleted and maintained well.

I can agree 1000%, getting one myself in couple days.. 2 of my friends have them and one has 297,000km the other 320,000 and never heard them run into any issues. Both are stage 1 and stage 2 with everything deleted

Man reading all this negative issues and seeing this, I must have had the only diesel E70 in American that had ZERO problems. I had many issues with my 2008 X5 4.8 litter. Now that was a nightmare.
Its likely hit and miss but mine has seen its fair share of problems and now the car has about 150,000 kms so it has been used but not worn out.

I have a 4.8i and you're so right about a nightmare. I've fix or repaired so many oil leaks and coolant leaks. I definitely don't want another BMW period. Nothing but a money pit. My son is in to BMW's . I've never own a diesel or turbo vehicle and he suggested this. Gonna have to think long and hard about one.

switched from C-Class (W204) to BMW 328d (2018) and could not be happier the fuel economy is beyond impressive the torque is absolutely killing I used to pay between $600 to $1000 per year service cost for the Merc the cost of 2019 service cost was $0 I'm glad that put my over blown ego aside and went for the BMW diesel this time so far 0 regret

Glad that most of the issues you stated seemed to be not too bad to fix DIY. was looking into getting a cheap BMW for more DIYing and modding. and since I already have a 335i daily, thought I'd get an X5 for those times I need a big trunk too! and if I do f something up, I won't be stuck without a car. seems like the X5 diesel tunes just as nicely as the petrol but with loads more torque :)

I’d have to say, I’m impressed with your desire to self service the beemers, and I’d have to agree the same thing, you state at the end of this, “love them” well our E70 is the 4.8, goes like a race car, upwards of $120 a week in fuel, but unless you can afford to service at a dealership or repair these things, they can be costly.

Great comment, and yes, generally I mix up the servicing, sometimes I do it and sometimes I let them do it, but either way a person should be able to afford to run these cars and they are not short of maintenance intensive. For me I can afford to pay the dealer but often I have found lead time on a scheduled appointment can be long where I live here and other times I look at the task and ask myself.....why leave $ 500.00 on the table when I can do this. I have a x5 09 35d and I have done 113,000 since new and I have had external res for def fail and I replaced. One mass airflow fail and glow plug module. I've been thru 4 sets of tires and yearly oil change. And I love it. It's now the 3rd car in my driveway but it's been amazing my wife loves it.
Love mine too, wish it was the 35d twin turbo.
I purchased a preowned 09 X5 35d with @70000 miles in 2014. Only first two months happy.... then nightmare... Dpf, mass air flow, oil leak....It was at the dealer almost 2 months out of total 6months ownership. I had thought diesel vehicle would last long which is partially true, but emission system faulty. It is so costly to replace. After 6 years, I still suffer from side-effects of the X5 ownership, paying $600 every month for buick compact car which was purchased in exchange of the non-sustainable car.
I respect X5 diesel owners for their dedication and cost. Good luck guys.

@@robcar4906 you need to go to a tune shop. All the diesel emissions need to be deleted because they have carbon build up. Then delete the swirl flaps and do a stage 1 tune. The car will go a million miles

Some real issues, and yet some people have had good experiences, oddly enough. Sounds like it was time for that one to go.
My 2009 X5 E79 is a delight. I've had to replace an injector but that's about it.
I have a 2009 3.0d. Had 1 airbag fail in the rear suspension,Glow plug controller, egr vacuum control solenoid, 1 fuel injector and glow plugs. Over 5 years and to be expected with a car on this mileage . Car has 90k miles on it now. Also the rear fog lights stop working as there is rust on the contact points. I need to clean them once a year or so. Basically I learnt don't scrimp on parts. The egr controller I used a cheaper part at the time and the cars ecu hated it. Bought a oem part and it cleared up instantly. In Europe most bmws have dpfs rather than add blue. Don't drive short distances, if you do then once a month do a motorway blast once a month to get everything to run at full temps. Look after the intake side injectors, egr valve ect and exhaust, turbo, use decent fuel.
Bmw has you brainwashed. These parts are not supposed to fail that quick. The biggest problem with Bmw is that they use regular parts on high performance cars, and it ends up breaking. I work with a guy that loves Bmw. He basically told me it is a great car if you like working on cars.
@@drjd2real I work on my own car. Changed glow plugs in Jan 2020 with cheaper than normal. Oem parts. They failed after 3 months, all 6!!!. They were burnt dead, pay shit money get shit results. The cheaper egr valve controller I purchased initially gave crap immediately after installing., went back and bought pierburg.... Problem gone. 3 litre diesel engine producing nearly 300bhp is a high performance engine. Can't scrimp on parts, asking to be kicked in the balls.
Good review. One heads up which might help you and others though... I’ve always avoided allowing my diesel fuel tank to fall below a quarter tank. This might be overkill, but it’s been my experience that crud sometimes collects in the bottom of diesel tanks. If you don’t draw fuel from the bottom of your tank, you stand a better chance of not experiencing plugged up fuel filters or worse yet, having stuff you don’t want sent on to your injectors going to them. Exactly dude, diesel fuel carries itself sooo small metals, and in the tank after some time they go to bottom, if you keep car tank over half always your fuel filters, pomps and fuel system will be safe. Of course time to time fuel and engine treatments are effective to clean up your system. More than 8 years have experience with diesel cars. They are sweet harts. If you always pay proper attention regarding oil, diesel and good treatment it will secure you from bad surprise maintenance costs.
The pickup is at the bottom of the tank anyway😂
I have an E53 3.0d work and kid truck. It has now done 330,000kms. I want to update to an F15 model but the bloody thing won't die. Admittingly I am an engineer who fixes everything myself but really not much has gone wrong apart from wear and tear items and a few sensors.

@@ECPP The car does not really have any resale but everything works apart from the parking sensors. Few dings and scratches however I don't worry too much where I park it at night. I nearly purchased an X6 M50d last week. I could not justify getting it trashed with work use. Loved the car thought. Plenty of power and economy.
E53 diesel are awesome. No dpf, or swirl flaps.
When i was young and dumb my first car was a 330i. First 50,000 miles were wonderful and after that the ugly side started showing. My car was in the shop at least every 2 to 3 months. I dropped so much money into it. Luckily I had a my Chevy truck (RELIABLE) to move in. After that car was making me go broke, i just had to sell it. I love the way they look but i would never make the mistake of buying another BMW. Everytime i see an X5 i want one, but i know after the honeymoon miles what happens
I have the same. Almost 200k on the engine... Lots of wear and tear breakdown, but fixed by myself with basic tools watching UA-cam videos. No real mechanic experience. Parts mostly $35-100 on eBay. Runs like a dream still 🤷♂️
Let me give you this advice, bmw for people who knows how to fix them. Parts are same price like any other car. If you don’t know how to fix them yourself don’t buy one and complain

Theirs a old jcb digger parked for years and one day the owner started the engine and it started working without any hassle. The hydroulic system was working fine, no issues. They should use a jcb hydraulic suspension because it last for a very long time.

Great video. Thanks. I've owned my USA 2009 X5 diesel since new. Like you I just love the car. I've driven the F15 and found it rather bland in comparison. Also had pretty much the same issues you have. 1). Vacuum lines replacing - look its a rubber hose in a really horrible environment. They will need to be replaced. Nothing lasts forever :-) 2. The famous Thermostat replacement. This one is important because if the thermostat isn't working correctly, no regens ...which means issues with exhaust system later. 3). The whole EGR and sensors .. a known issue and campaign to replace. 4). and now the glow plug problem. I'm at 137K miles so pretty much at that point where they seem to fail. Its either the glow plugs or the glow plug controller (or both) that needs replacing. 5) and the one thats looming in the distance is the DPF (Diesel particle filter). That is close to end of life. Again, although with Regen you convert soot to ash ... in the end DPF will fill up with ash ..and thats it. Thats unfortunately an expensive part and expensive to fix. Oh well ... I didn't have the issue with the rear suspension. That is unique to vehicles equipped with 3rd row seats that have that suspension fitted.
So delete all the emissions garbage and you're good to go? My state is getting rid of emissions in 2020 and i'm looking at these which is why I ask.

My oldies have a 12yr X5 with 150 thousand km on it and Have never had a problem with it, meanwhile I bought a brand-new Toyota Hilux and it’s been a warranty pig 🐖 🤷♂️ Luck of the draw with cars I think
A friend bought a brand new hi lux 5 years ago. A small saloon car hit the rear of the hi lux on the toe bar and scrapped the truck due to a bent chassis over the rear axle. They are no longer bullet proof.
Probably the car came out on the production line on a Friday....they usually don't get the attention-to-detail every car off the production line receives.
My friends girlfriends brothers ex knows a prison mate who once talked to a dude that said Toyota is unreliable. So yah....
Nearly every European diesel regardless of make suffer from all these same issues.
My Ford has 196k miles on the odometer. I have routinely changed the oil, trans fluid 3 times, fuel filters 8 times , Brakes 3 times, Brake fluid 4 times, tires 4 times. Never a check engine light, never a breakdown or urgent service needed. Bought it new when I traded in my three year old BMW Diesel that I bought new. But after 50k miles and 7 stays at the dealer, totaling 2months, it was time to say good bye. To own a BMW is challenging, to own a BMW out of Warranty is Foolish.

I completely disagree with your comments. The X5 3.0D is extremely reliable. Very cheap to run. The only design fault is weak internal door carrier. Otherwise it is fantastic, especially the older 6-speed E53.

The most dangerous with the e70 diesel is if has the bosch cp4 pump. If the pumps fails, you will get metal fragments I your whole diesel system. Pumps, injectors, sensors and a lot of hours washing all the pipes and tank. 10k!

I love this car's diesel engine (euro spec, no DEF from factory 🎉) but my problem with this car is the quality of its plastics. They're everywhere in the engine bay and diesels run hot, especially turbocharged diesels. I've had to replace the plastic engine partitions, the plastic radiator fan, the coolant cap and even the grommets that hold the plastic engine cover. A few weeks ago, one of the headlights went off. Turns out the plastic sheath of the headlamps' wiring degraded and fell into bits inside the assembly, leaving the wiring exposed to shorts. Never seen that happen to any car.
Inside, the plastic door pulls also degraded and turned sticky. The rolling plastic cupholder cover also turned sticky and broke in two. The dash has held up well but joints in the interior trims creak and squeak from plastic dryness.
Aftermarket replacements for these parts are cheap and, if where you live labor is not expensive (as in my case), this is more of an inconvenience. Some I DIY. But it's annoying having these small things pop up more and more frequently.
As I read elsewhere on YT, "the N57 engine may hold up to eternity while the rest of the car may crumble around it."

If your def fluid is freezing up it means your in tank heater has failed or is failing. Had that issue on a 335d

My 2010 BMW E70 X5 xDrive35d with twin turbo, built in the USA...
The DEF fluid is actually ureea which is used on the airports runways to melt the snow. They don’t use salt due to corrosion on aircrafts. In my opinion, if the fluid is turning into a gel at extreme low temperature, then probably should add some additives. Now, at minus 30 Celsius even the gasoline cars are struggling, nothing really works properly, oil is thick, battery is low, relays and switches gets stuck. I remember one very cold winter in Montreal, early in the morning, the wheels bottom portion were frozen flat and felt like I was driving on a bumpy road. The door handle ripped of the door, mirror fell of the windshield, transmision got stuck in the first gear.
You are right it truly feels uninhabitable living here in the winter. Summers are nice but winters really do a number on the cars.

I own a 2015 35d with 80,000 miles in the USA. I have had no issues except oil changes and filter changes. I admit I have never cleaned the intake and valves so this may hit me soon but so far a great car. I get about 31mpg on the highway and about 21 in the City.

Thank you for the video great job, I'm torn about buying a 2018 35d from a friend who's coming off a lease. Low kilometres and somewhat a good price. Just worried about having a diesel engine. I've had gas engines all life. There's a UA-camr named Scotty who says stay away from diesel engines. They become a money pit once the vehicle becomes old. :(
Scotty says stay away from everything except a base Toyota and thats OK if economy and reliability are the ONLY goals. The other side of the coin are those people like us who have better taste and enjoy the driving experience. The 35d does and may have a few issues along the way but we still love ours and would do it all over again but unfortunately the diesels are being discontinued due to emissions standards, Expect rear air ride issues which is not a bad fix in most cases, DEF Tank Heater which has a hidden recall that they usually cover on lower mile cars but will not advertise, and possibly glow plugs. Other than that pretty solid. They are not as cheap as a Toyota Corolla, but they offer up the better experience, by far.

Depends oh how you want to spend your money. Best option if you like the brand and dont want to brake the bank on maintenance/repair. Lease it and get rid of it when warranty is out
Front glass cracking means that chassis is not stiff enogh
Likely happened when the starboard side rear airbag suspension failed and the chassis had to carry additional stress

King Midas check out tunemyeuro, it’s the most recommended tune, they do some awesome work. I’m getting mine done by vast performance in Michigan right now, they did great on the VW I just had them do so hopefully they do just as well with my x5.

I like my 2011 X5 diesel just hit 385,000 MI I did not buy the vehicle it was left to me when my uncle passed away it had 22,000 miles on it in 2017 . Garage kept from Naples Florida. Now it's been in New Jersey the rest of its life and still going I don't like a couple things about it like the bifold glove box the armrest the sunroof everything works I just don't like the design and I don't like how the headlights fade it I had to do that three times so far get them cleaned up with a kit other than that runs great service was done one of my buddies is a tech works on diesels very reasonable mechanic and my other vehicle is my 69 Chevy pickup truck it's was in the family since day one it was my father's that's my hot rod slash summertime vehicle with air conditioning at it 327 is worked nice head nice cam nice posi rear all around gears for the highway and she showroom condition. I would not buy the BMW X5 but I'm very surprised how many miles that it's going and still going strong lucky no major issues this regular service and the paint still like new wax it clean it seats don't have rips some wear very nice to have in rain snow . Not my cup of tea but left to me I never thought it would go so many miles and still going
I have 335d and a e70 x5d. The 3 series ive had 0 issues for 60k miles and the x5 had a clear history when i bought it at 70k miles. I tuned it a month later and running at 120k miles with 0 issues. Your engine bay is disgusting. Buy a Corolla if you want something perfectly reliable.
Where I live, engine spaces are constantly dirty as as the roads and with winter for 2/3 of the year, good luck. It is what it is.

I also have a 2009 x5 desiel, with only 28k miles, and just recently replaced the small turbo. It runs strong now. But I'll have to deal with the air blowing very weak on the dash. I already replaced the cabin air filter, but that didn't help. And I'm thinking something clogging in the air ducts?

I have shown issues with REAR AIR BAG REPAIRS, INTAKE SHUTTLE VALVE ISSUE, VACUUM LINES, GLOW PLUGS, OIL SERVICE a couple of times, etc.

i got a 2013 x5 gasoline my only real issue with it right now is the run flat tires ... i had to replace one by the 2nd month i had it and all it had was a slow leak and was basically a brand new tire @ the time .... and 4 months in i got another slow leak in another tire that has almost brand new tread on it .... smh!!! but imma ride this one out lmao ! ... however when i did research this car before buying alot of owners did say they were swapping the runflats for regular tires but mainly it was for a more smoother ride ......
I'm buying one of these soon, I was aware of the airbag suspension as most air bags seem to deteriorate and fail eventually, already price checked some so I can replace them right away haha. I was also aware of the issues with the EGR and emissions system as a whole, FOURTUNATELY I live in an area that does not test for emissions and I can get away with deleting it all and re-tuning. That park fault was very weird, have you ever found out anything else about it?

@@Electricday27 I did, sooner than I thought I would due to DEF tank related codes. Turns out, the DPF at the least has already been replaced, (and whoever did it did a terrible job reassembling the vehicle.)
It was not a fun, easy, or inexpensive task, but the payoff was well worth it. I'm getting about 3 or 4 mpg increase at 70mph, and the power is great!

Can you suggest a smooth tire? I have they original Bridgestones on my 2012 X5 35d and harsh ride.
Pirelli's have some great options for street driving if you are ok spending a bit more.
I wouldn't go with pirellis , just go with regular tires not the Run flat tire, and be prepared to fix your tire on your own or have AAA to help you out

Sure why not ? I love the diesel powertrains of today. They start in cold weather, they get outrageous fuel mileage, and the performance is usually quite lively. Looks like a good option to me, have you subscribed yet ?

im getting a 200,000 km 2011 x5 diesel inspected soon. I am actually in edmonton as well. Is that a terrible idea if it checks out mechanically? I know theres a DEF heater issue. I m planning on keeping to 400k or so as long as its not more than a couple thousand of maintenance a year, vs leasing a more expensive new model. id also keep mine in a garage.
i should add, at a german car shop that specializes mostly in beamers. i bring my volks there, rates are reasonable.
So basically tune and fully delete it and you will be okay?

Well, get this one BMW X5 owners. Maybe I should have gone with diesel? I have a 2014 X5 xDrive35i purchased pre-cert with 29K miles on it. Rides like a Wrangler. Horrible. Zero space in the back for legroom. So, my certification ends at the end of the month but the dealer called me and told me I blew a strut and had a crack in my air intake duct. So, I have these pictures of the leaking strut now the dealer is telling me that I have to pay for it! I only have 39k miles on the thing as of 2 weeks ago, as it is still at the shop. So, I ask how long should a strut last. Got nowhere, the service guys are great as but if you do one side, they should do the other at no cost I have never heard of a strut blowing because of a pothole. So, my purchasing experience of my 1st BMW was miserable. Save yourself a lot of money and time and get an SUV not made by BMW. Hey, if you do want one to get a brand new one it will ride nice for about 30k miles. Also, I know that the truck was in an accident but that is another story.
Thank you!. I got 1 question re fuel consumption as I own 2008 diseal x5 and the fuel consumption is terrible after battery change. I took it to dealer and they couldn't find any issue with car. Please advise? Thanks
Did they register the battery? If not, it may be keeping the alternator on overcharging the battery and using increased fuel

Yea my girlfriend brother who is a lawyer had this same X5 and let me tell you it was a nightmare for him, it was literally in the shop every month, he’s a lawyer so he had the money, he got fed up and junked it, he bought a Porsche, you have two of the most notorious money pit bimmers, the m5 that you have, and this diesel X5 you’re a very brave man for owning two of bmw most notorious money pit machines.

Hi, Mark. I got a code P2457 which is EGR cooling system performance. Do you have any idea if it is related to the egr valve or the egr cooler?

I purchased a 2018 BMW X5 xdrive35d M sport/Executive package and a third row seat and AWD with 38,500 miles for my daughter and her family. It is still in warranty for one more year. I purchased an extended warranty for 3 more years and a maintenance agreement for 4 years. I wanted her to have a safe family car. My daughter wanted a diesel. They thought the towing capacity is better with a Diesel engine. I added a tow hitch at BMW which cost a pretty penny. I thought the Audi Q7 was a better choice with a third row seat included and many have the tow hitch as well. Would you keep this beyond the warranty at the 7 year point or should I trade? Her family is growing up and the X5 might be cramped for a family of 5.

The rear suspension is the most annoying failure as it drives like rubbish afterwards ruining the experience... switched to coils so solved now but was a massive pain in the ass (literally)
Still havecto delete swirl flaps and egr if I can get away with it then do some drivetrain servicing, body and interior trim repairs as well
Its generally good but bmws need a bitbof babying and tlc or will give you $pain in return...
BMWs are great cars, but after 10 years, the quality is an absolute JOKE. The older ones held up much better, but after 2006 they are built like weed trimmers. Everything goes downhill at once. I hear cars in moderate climates fare better than ones in the sunbelt states.

I think the diesel is good as the vehicle is heavy and can be heavy on fuel in the gas form. Diesel version has good power.

I live it and I still have it but it now has about 200,000 kms or 120,000 miles. Rear suspension was an issue but I retrofitted to coil springs and it’s good now

Got my oil pan gasket and engine oil filter housing gasket coming for replacement after BMW identified them as defects because of minor oil leaks when having recalls done on a 2013 E70 35i. They charge me $3k for the job but that's not good enough to me. The local German auto mechanic charges me $1.6k for the same work which will take about 10hrs to perform but will give peace of mind for quite some time.

I have the same car (2011) and I didn't know until they broke.
Most reliable e70 is with n52 engine, 2008-2009 X5 3.0, 2nd is 2010-12 X5 35i with n55 engine, I would avoid 4.8i and 50i and 35D.

ExoticCar PlayPlace that’s true, engine will last forever but it’s the emission stuff that fails, plus in California it’s super strict on emission controls.
I was thinking about a diesel long and hard but the more I consider the value I place on reliability a modest, mass produced NA gas engine just seems like the best choice.
Bondominator most common issues on the diesels are emissions related, if you live somewhere you can get away with a delete it’s very reliable, and with a good tune it’s pretty fast for an suv, but a delete and tune will add several thousand to the cost
