The 35d handles exceptionally well for a large SUV. Highway performance is above average - Touring/"road trips" with mostly highway driving, I'm able to exceed 500 miles on a single tank. Issues: Aside from wear items such as tires & brakes, I have only only experienced two occurences of one minor issue where Nox sensors in the exhaust got dirty and tripped a check engine light. This is due to my X5 being configured for California emissions - so may not be an issue in other areas. Very informative. I felt like it was a review about my personal 2008 x5, because I've had every problem you talked about. Starter, replaced valve covers, oil pan, water pump, etc. I loved the look of mine, but I was nervous every time I started it to see what warning lights would come on. It drove great when it worked, though.
@@bendavis2653 You may very well get a good one. I can only speak of mine which was a disaster. I paid $7500 and it had 130,000 miles. Bought from a neighbor. Look at Edmonds and Kelley Blue Book for reliability history for the 2008 X5. I can't remember what they say.
I wouldn't trade the 400HP twin turbo for anything! I dont mind adding the endless quarts of oil! Buy it with a solid extended warranty from a dealer. Or if you're lucky, the engine was already replaced. But there's no comparison to this monster in this era unless you buy the M. It's a beast!!

It does have its issues but its still my daily driver for the past 4 years ( 5 in September ) i plan on trading it for a Lexus soon
like he suggested, beware of the v8. I have owned mine for only about 4 months, the car is flawless cosmetically so I assumed it was a good buy. I had it inspected by certified Bmw mechanics that noted a ‘slight’ oil leak but couldn’t pin point where it was coming from. well, not long after the car started gushing oil everywhere, anytime it was started it was a consistent stream of oil. turns out it was 3 different oil leaks causing it & according to the mechanic (who has performed maintenance on all our Bmws) claims it’s just standard maintenance on the v8. the main leak is the ‘engine oil cooler’ which is $1600 to fix, and the other 2 come out to $1300. on top of all that, the heater stopped blowing warm air due to a failed water pump at a cost of $860. STAY AWAY from the v8 unless you have some serious chump change for repairs alone.
David Farley great, mine has more miles than that so good to know I got another pricey one coming. Update on mine, power tailgate lid struts failed so ridiculously that it will keep opening itself automatically anytime the car is unlocked. The only way to keep it closed the car has to be locked first, then jump out & manually slam it closed. My car is cursed I swear
Great video. Like all cars you will need maintenance every 30 to 80k miles. Quick note-I had a 2002 3.0 X5 and it was a very heavy vehicle. Back then they were tanks. I had to switch to an 04 with the 4.4 V8. What a great SUV and was very reliable and fun. The 6 cylinders are more powerful now and they are making them lighter but theirs nothing like the V8. I'm surprised you didn't mention the expansion tank or window regulators? These are common issues.

Looking for a 2011 X5 AWD. E55? The X drive 3.0…..NON Diesel. How do cooling systems hold up long term? Most problems are either leak or water pump failure. My only skeptical area is the electric water pump. I am old school and I am not saying the electro pump doesn’t work but still going to take a bit to de learn my mind about not having a physical or even virtual coolant temp gauge? My theory of not having a coolant temp gauge is there is no way to monitor coolant temp gauge and if you are overheating and get the warning light…..the damage could already be done. With the pump being electric is there a sensor that can provide a warning lamp to the instrument cluster BEFORE it gets too out of control. Glad they brought back the cup holders although position is not the most ideal position…too much risk of liquid spillage on two …(probably expensive)major electrical components. 1. Shifter 2. I drive controller Good review and showing some of the more obscure features/options etc……
I have a 2011 X5 I had to double check the trunk doesn’t automatically open when you press the button on they key, it unlocks but you have to lift it up yourself and it doesn’t have the button to close it like yours and my moms 2018 X5. Also the backseat does have the fold down in the middle but doesn’t have cup holders. Also totally agree with you about the steering wheel I have the alien 👽 looking one I like yours much better. Overall though I love my car I used to have a 2005 it was getting old with 150,000 miles and starting having problems but it lasted me a good 5 years. My 2011 has about 90,000 miles and hopefully it will last another 5 years or so. I didn’t like that I couldn’t listen to music from my phone through the Bluetooth so I bought a little adapter that plugs into the aux in center console so no one can see it and you just have to turn it on and any audio from my phone goes to the speakers.

Yes still a great car, mileage is a tricky thing the lower the better of course but it is all condition based, most major maintenance done between 80 and 110k miles, price depends on where you are. Here in Los Angeles i see 2007-2008 models with 140-160k miles go for 6-9k and that’s decent

There are at least 2 other engines available for the E70 both M57 engines, one single turbo the other twin. The twin turbo 3litre diesel produces 282HP and is the pick of all the engines. It's badged as xDrive 35D. 0 to 100Kph in 7 seconds... I love it !
Would you advise someone to buy the 2007 diesel 3.0 now ?
If you delete and tune it, it'll do 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. Top speed = When you run out of courage.
@@weglobalentertainment8441 I have a 2005 model e53. And it's a fantastic car. Your best hope with a second hand X5 is to be mechanically minded and do any repairs yourself or if you have a good mechanic who doesn't charge an arm and a leg buy the parts yourself and have them do the work
This is THE most informative video on x5 !
Thank you for not regurgitating what everyone can find online in 5 seconds.
Absolutely the best review of this vehicle I've seen. Thank you. I love all the information you passed along. Very concise but also very detailed. Good references of your other videos. Most of the other videos I've found leave out a lot important information. Thank you once again thank you for this video.
Very nice review and car Tim. I've owned a 2nd hand 2012 3L Diesel M sport for 3 years. Watching your review made me fall in love with my X5 all over again....
Thank you
I have 2013 X5 35i V 6 twin turbo sport package with 90,000 miles on, no problems jet thank Good, I want to thank you for your feedback very useful.
You are welcome
how is it now?
Congratulation, guy!! very awesome video!!.. and you know!!.. very professional!!🎉👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I HAVE A 2009 BMW X5 3.0SI AND IT IS I THINK THE BEST SUV STILL
Agreed👍
Looking at buying one how much money has yours needed in maintenance
This one didn’t need anything at all, but every car is different
@@icymayne My X5 had no issues apart fom its scheduled services
What would be a good place to purchase a liftgate support X5 2010
You should have at least mention about the diesel version. I came for that
he said he doesn´t work with diesel engines so he can´t give any info but he didn´t say that in the video but in the comments
Dude - super helpful. Did not think I was going to watch the whole thing. Thanks for passing the knowledge!
Thanks for feedback, happy it was helpful
Zeiten LLC In your experience and opinion, how much more potential headache are you opening yourself up to by getting a N55 E70? Would love to have the extra power and I’m not scared away by some additional service and cost but not really interested in opening myself to a bunch of risk. Thanks!
Do you recommend it I'm planning on getting a 2008 for $5000 150,000 miles
@@bendavis2653 You may very well get a good one. I can only speak of mine which was a disaster. I paid $7500 and it had 130,000 miles. Bought from a neighbor. Look at Edmonds and Kelley Blue Book for reliability history for the 2008 X5. I can't remember what they say.
Thank you! Will do
Most informative video on youtube!
I have a 50I with a new engine I say the same
which one do you have sir? which version,.
@@josesuero371 Its the Xdrive50i. Known for engine leaks/oil consumption. So be careful if you buy one.
@@ericpantalone5229 I have a 540i e39 and I bought it with 165.000 km and had engine leaks and oil consup problems. had to change all the sealings on the engine.
I agree I love the X5 50i
Excellent breakdown of the E70 family tree! I like your 214's w/o fender flares. I also have a 3.0i and plan to mount the same wheel/tire combo but wasn't sure if I needed the arches. Think I'm good now after seeing yours!
Best video regarding the main issues and maintenance. Thanks.
Thank you
I just got 2011 X5 35i M-sport, I love it. I also have 550i with n62 with 162k mile, it’s not that bad except for oil leaks. But 50i X5 is nightmare. Spot on review.
Good video, I have a bunch of BMWs in the driveway and I was agreeing with all you points on what breaks, not just X5 problems. I laughed at the Zf trans fix needed, just did those seals myself. Valve cover on the n54, not just gasket. Elect water pump, check, starter only on the non turbo check. Great insight from a BMW mechanic!
This BMW X5 is definitely the best looking X5. The new X5 looks like a car made in Asia.
Such a great review and very approachable person!
Very educative coverage of the E70 ! I own a 2008...3.0 si..running ok! Except lots of electronics failure! ABS...DSC...lately I realized the boot leaks and damages the Audio power amp! Crazy design from BMW! This results into lots of misbehaviour!
owned one for about 3 months (same color as the one in the video)... the 4.8 leaked coolant and oil,.. it had better driving characteristics (felt much better on turns) than my moms much newer W166 bluetech.. but it averaged me 15mpg over the time I had it granted I did get 21mpg one tank on a highway trip, I had to get rid of it... its a gorgeous car though and I still kind of want want a diesel one in the future
Thank you for the video Tim! I truly appreciate it.
I just purchased another E70, this time, a 2012 35d!
hope it will serve you well
With the 35d you'll be doing plenty of mileage driving to and from the auto mechanic!
After watch this video got my self a 2010 whit 100 t milles and it looks great ....thank you Sir for the info...
Thanks, I had a 01 x5 4.4 I, and that was the best car I had to date. I was looking again because I was getting tired of Acura, need something grown up again. Came across this video and subscribe. Thanks this was all the help I needed, because I was thinking about a v8.
Nice video man. Thanks for the walkthrough!
Thank you, appreciate your feedback🙌
Thanks for this vid, I am planning to get one and I couldn't decide which engine to go with. At least now I have a better idea with what to go with. I am surely getting the N52 engine
go big or go home
I agree that this is by far the best looking X5 they ever did. I’m looking to buy one in the next couple days..
If you still service, you’d be my first stop 👍
Great in-depth review! Very informative.
My e70d only has 165kms on it. Runs like a top. New battery and bushings all it needed. I love it. I sold an e92 zcp, 135 and a merc cls55 amg. Kept the e70. It does everything. X5M is a nightmare.
I'm on my second x5 they are a magic car to own.
This guy knows what he's talking about. I have the x-drive 4.8i and though love the sound of my modified exhaust it has been a money pit. If you don't know how to do your own repairs I don't recommend these vehicles to anyone. The crazy thing is after repairing it I won't to keep it. Such a vinicky vehicle.
What actually breaks down? i really want that v8 grunt but I'm sceptical
Some serious info especially on leaky gaskets 👍🏼👍🏼
One thing i can say about this truck is that it’s definitely expensive to maintain, but they are good trucks . I have a 3.0 Si & its at almost 182k miles & still running strong . It does have its issues but its still my daily driver for the past 4 years ( 5 in September ) i plan on trading it for a Lexus soon
which one would you say was the worst problem?
master mechanic and you don't know this does NOT come with a N54. you also didn't mention the M57 diesel.
like he suggested, beware of the v8.
Expansion tank and window regulator are really not that common issues on e70 platform
At that decision making moment and your review and advice has my heart set on a 2010 gold 3.5i! Agree with the comments...best info yet on buying a used x5! Thank you
How much do you spend on maintenance? They are offering me an e70 2011 3.5 for 12k usd
@@lilmayii how many miles? I ended up getting 2012 3.5i M package and couldnt be happier. Maint so far...est in 6 months has been less than 1k( 2 oil changes, airfilter, misc)
@@FebTwinE9er They have 140k km and it looks impeccable inside and outside, I would only need to take the mechanic to review it in detail, it would be a good investment as a first car, I do 1k a month and I have 15k to splurge on that x5

Great video! I have a 2008 with the 4.8L engine. It has been a great SUV and pretty dependable.
How long have you had it and how many miles ? I have an 07 4.8 trying to decide to keep or flip. Thanks
1. Shifter
2. I drive controller
Good review and showing some of the more obscure features/options etc……
Iv been thinking about getting 1 but wasent sure about it , thank you bro for the info
Happy to help
going to see an x5 today thanks for letting me know what to look for

How come you didnt mention any of the diesel engines? That would be very helpful as well. Apart from that the best review i seen so far. I like that you not only mention the potential problems but also point out where they can occur and how much it would cost to fix it.
Thanks, we don’t work with diesels so can’t say much about those engines all the information comes from hand on personal experience from fixing thousands of BMWs

Great video man. Thanks. You did a great job.
Im looking for exact same car. Thanks for the review.
Very good video. I actually learned a lot....im thinking of the 35D and you didnt go over diesles but most people dont want them. I wonder what you would say about the same years of diesels.
Is 2010 X5 still a good option today in 2023? Also what miles you recommend and price point please?
Yes still a great car, mileage is a tricky thing the lower the better of course but it is all condition based, most major maintenance done between 80 and 110k miles, price depends on where you are. Here in Los Angeles i see 2007-2008 models with 140-160k miles go for 6-9k and that’s decent
@@Zeiten thanks for responding i may need help seeking one
