  • Working with the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL), researchers from DARPA's LS3 program demonstrated new advances in the robot's control, stability and maneuverability, including "Leader Follow" decision making, enhanced roll recovery, exact foot placement over rough terrain, the ability to maneuver in an urban environment, and verbal command capability.

      It isnt without risks. Take consideration of the gun's recoil, the weight, the gun's location (where you will put it) and the gun's firing (Fully automatic will be the best).

    I, personally, wouldn't mind having that thing in my squad. It could carry at least the load of 2 people. Might be better if it had some kind of offensive capabilities, but hey. This is amazing. A robot that can actively follow a human without any kind of intervention. Can even get up to a good pace on smooth ground. This is history. I never knew how advanced robotics were getting until now and i am blown away. I can't wait to see what this thing becomes as they further refine it.

    So many questions. If you have a male LS3 and a female LS3, and they get on well, do you get little baby LS3s?
    Does it do tricks? Can I throw it a ball and it brings it back to me?
    Does it like its tummy being tickled?

      You know, first ever made car ran about 6 km/h. Many people back in XIXth century also said "or just use a horse...".
      It's not like that, that those robots will kill you with lasers, run up to 100 km/h, or have protective shields. What can you see on the video is just a prototype. But give it few years, and every country on the world will gonna have full army of these.

    I'm not understanding what problem this thing solves. If I was a fireteam leader out in the field, this thing would be way to loud, way to fumbly, and I would probably end up strapping it up with C4 and sending into the enemy territory.

    • @harleyjustice328
      @harleyjustice328 10 років тому +2

      My thoughts exactly. This thing is LOUD. Not to mention it needs power. What happens if it loses power miles away from a convoy or base? Now you have to either ditch all of the gear it was carrying or carry it yourself.

    Not practical... I want to see this machine walk through a live fire exercise. I doubt it would be a force multiplier, In fact it could even be a hindrance, especially in areas where gorilla fighters operate. If you took out a big dog you'd force the squad to carry more equipment and move more slowly through the field. It also makes far too much noise and would give away your position very quickly. I am quite confident that one 50. cal round would obliterate any electronics on this... you'd have to cover it in armour which would slow it down even more making it even more impractical. Big dog would be better suited to civilian role on building sites, mines, rescue operations etc.

    • @SixStringSerenades
      @SixStringSerenades 10 років тому

      I can see it being easily usable for urban pacification missions in a role replacing that of an attack dog. Imagine how much this damn thing weighs, and then how much force would be translated into impact by, say, a less than lethal dozer-style attachment. Riot police not doing the job? "Sir, the mob is starting to overwhelms the shield line!". "Well, sergeant, send in the Dogs".

    Why are we putting these things to war? They're bulky, slow, and noisy. This technology would be boss for just civilian camping, No more needing to lug that heavy tent, just load up your electronic cow. Awesome. Some pink markers on many objects. Were they below the spatial or angular resolution of the sensor or outside of the field of regard from prior runs? Is the pink tape recognised by another on board sensor?
    May be worth including some logic for dealing with certain terrain obstacles? Eg don't step on a wet log, step over it, go round it etc. If using lidar of a particular lamda then you will get very little retro reflection from water hence you know it's water so don't step into it! 2c

  • @SanderPool

    Curious what the operational range is. An earlier demo I saw had a combustion engine which was very very loud. This one appears be electrical and much quieter. I suppose for short range patrols in difficult terrain where wheels and tracks don't work this could be useful. But only where the enemy knows you are there anyway because they can hear you coming a mile away even with this one. I like the 'roll cushion' on the sides. Good luck, looking forward to the next video.

    There is also lots of work being done on autonomous tracked and wheeled combat, scouting and support vehicles too. And a device like the "Big Dog" or the LS3 is not a waste. It would greatly enhance the ability of our infantry and special operation forces to carry extra ammo or heavier weapon systems like mortars, water, food, etc. to greatly extend their operational capabilities. Perhaps even more importantly, it could carry a wounded soldier, and free up hands to keep fighting to safety.

    3:10 take a closer look on the STOP sign. Above the english STOP word the inscription is in Arabic. I find two explanations:
    1) the testing ground is somewhere in Arabic country, which I find unlikely because of the landscape.
    2) the machine is being taught Arabic, which gives a sort of a guidance where it is planned to be used.
    I like the project and hope for a civilian use, although the concept incorporates a mistake. Better solution would be not to use "legs" but something else.
