  • The Marine Corps Warfighting Lab in partnership with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Boston Dynamics tested an autonomous robot on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Sept. 10. Alpha Dog- The Legged Squad Support System, or LS3, demonstration was a performance test of the pack mule prototype for the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James Amos and DARPA Director Arati Prabhakar. Interviews include: Lt. Col Joe Hitt, DARPA program manager, and Brig. Gen. Mark R. Wise, Commanding General of the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory. Training takes time for each animal - once you have a working robot, you can just build them en masse. Real animals require food, sleep, can get scared or be stubborn, and may react unpredictably.

    If only it didn't make more noise than a tank. Good luck being a stealthy infantry unit with this in tow.

      @misterdinkly 8 років тому +8

      +soundslave thinking the same thing. Maybe they are carrying too much gear? I could see them loading these up with gear and then they break down. Might as well go back to horses.

    • @77Avadon77
      @77Avadon77 8 років тому +4

      +misterdinkly Problem with horses is you have to carry the water and food for them. Of course with this thing what happens when you run out of fuel/batt - same thing.

    • @misterdinkly
      @misterdinkly 8 років тому +4

      +77Avadon77 I graduated elementary schooling so I'm aware living creatures need food and water. I'm saying a horse would be more reliable than this contraption. Needs a lot of improving is what I'm saying. I also drive a motor vehicle so I may have heard they need gasoline from time to time.

      However, unlike a horse, this "robot" would be quite useless if flipped onto its back.

      +Dik Tittylover Robots dont get sick. Horse and Mule need to be taken care of like people, more than a simple house pet. With something like this you can hit it with a hammer if its not behaving and it will prolly change its mind. : /
      Also you'll be able to shoot at these with little effect unlike animals which only need enough sound and they will go running. As with every new tech it starts slow, sometimes silly in practicality, but give it time and it will flourish my friend. Have some faith.

      Only carries 100 lb WTF?
      500 lb load would be the minimum. Gear & ammo load out for squad.
      Plus it's own fule.
      Make it silent, or its rear support only.
      I'm thinking this is a bad joke.
      Just a tax payers thoughts.

    This will never result in making the infantry Soldier/Marines' load any lighter. What will happen is that they will have to take more stuff along with them and the machine here will carry the difference. That's what always happens. If you make a rucksack five pounds lighter, they will just require that the grunt carry five more pounds of kit.

      masscashstacks You jackass, how shall it bring home another soldier. All it does is carrying supplies (yet, probably), making loud noise, attracting attention to the squad. And don't argue about this now, there are definitely cheaper and way more options of bringing COVER onto the field. Don't tell me now it will provide cover or some sort of nonsense.
      If troops need unmanned assistance by autonomous devices, there are already possibilities of providing that. Also they're expensive enough already. At the current state of this project, it's just nonsense. Just some people who dream about a world with autonomous robots etc. how ridiculous is that by now.
      There are so far definitely other ways of transporting gear among a squad.

    One mule about $500. Self fueling and can travel across rivers etc with no need for someone to control them. If it breaks down easily disposed of with just one bullet in head.
    One robot pack $200,000. Needs constant fueling, breaks down in deep mud or water. Cannot swim. Very useful for locating enemy who will split their sides laughing when they see this.

      Mules are only stubborn if they don't get a drink when they want one. An experienced handler will always carry a can of Budweiser for such an event. TheSpiritof1969 The point is, robots can be upgraded. Far beyond limits that animals have. I bet that if you were living in 1950, you would complain about why computers are useless, because every good accountant could do the same thing. Or why radio and telephones are useless if you can use a homing pigeon or office boy.
      Face it, your way of thinking is backward and non-progressive.

    • @TheSpiritof1969
      @TheSpiritof1969 9 років тому

      Hyper In the 50s technology was moving forward at an incredible rate. Anyone with half a brain knew that growing technologies were the way forward in commerce, medicine and a host of other things including war. But the hard reality is that Vietnam proved that technology was not the be all of winning a war. Just how these things lumbering away with a man behind with a control box is more efficient than a mule following at the end of a rope is lost on me.Backward thinking? LOL Don't make silly comments like that to people you do not know, I could talk for hours on some of the amazing acheivements of 21st century technologies and their historys ....... but this is not one of them. Technology for the sake of technology is a waste of resourses that would be better spent on more meaningfull things.

      The special forces do use donkeys and possibly whatever local pack animals are available, but there are various reasons a robot would be easier for the average soldier.

      ***** You need to cool right down sir. This machine... Is far from ideal for combat.
      Fuel needs, noise, sand and dust in the gears.
      In many ways donkeys are still superior to this tech. A donkey can shit and piss anywhere. If it's not a desert it can eat on the go. It's not going to stay like this forever. Tech is advancing. But it's going to have to get A LOT more efficient, and A LOT more robust/silent.

      ***** they have used mules and pack animals for centuries. several breeds are specifically used for military use. the only reason russia lost in Afghanistan was due to the pack animals carrying weapons and supplies into the mountains out of reach of the Russians. machines break down more frequently than animals get sick and cost 1000s of times more to replace or repair. if you look at efficiency, machines are less than 1% as efficient as animals which have evolved efficiency over millions of years.

      gary n _"the only reason russia lost in Afghanistan was due to the pack animals carrying weapons and supplies into the mountains out of reach of the Russians."_
      o_O ...please... just stop. The Russians lost in Afghanistan for the same reason the Taliban are still operating in Aghanistan under NATO, which is that the mujahedin fled over the border to Pakistan, got supplies there and then went back into Afghanistan to do quick operations. My neighbor served there with Doctors without Borders back during the Russian conflict and brought back with him photographs that showed the actual reason why the Russians lost in a military sense as well. Those reasons included Russian choppers and tanks being taken out with portable missile platforms from the US. They included repairing said tanks and using it against the Russians afterwards etc. I can assure you that the Afghans were never out of range of the Russian choppers when they were in Afghanistan and in the beginning of the war they were getting pounded to bits. This would likely have continued were it not for aid from the US that let them counter Russian air dominance.
      Amusingly, said choppers learned that to stay reasonably safe they had to fly so high that they were almost invisible from ground level at the very top of the mountain regions. The very idea that mules would allow you to store supplies out of reach from the Russians is just bizarre.

    • @vulpine321
      @vulpine321 10 років тому

      Gnomefro they carried the ground to air missiles (called stingers if you were wondering) on pack animals. the same pack animals would provide meat, often while continuing to carry the missiles afterwards.once the missile delivered, the pack animal was killed and eaten. small amounts of meat were removed from the animals during the journy, but not enough to incapacitate the beast. then they would pack mud on to stop infection. the entire transport system in the mountains was based on pack animals.the russian choppers were not able to get close enough to engage effectively due to the stingers and heavy guns ...which in turn were there due to the pack animals...take away the animals, and there would have been no stingers and no heavy guns. just a lot of angry guys sitting on a hill firing ak's into the air and running away.

    makes as much sence as robots from pacific rim... americans you do realize billions of your tax money is wasted on something that can be replaced by mules, horses, quadbikes? For god sake just attach some huge carbon wheels to the backpack and carry it. It's like back in 60-es when you spend hundred thousands to creat a pen that could be used in space... and vodka drinking russians simply used pencils.

      3) it's hands free

      5) it's just fricken cool!

      +Harry Rosewood a mule or a horse can't transmit what it sees to your laptop or transmit it through sattelite, a manned vehicle like quadbikes will carry within it fatality risk, although an autonomous quadbike might actually more advantageous for the purposes involved, but I can see situations where quadruplegy is superior to wheeled vehicles, especially in an urban warfare scenarios.

    hmm... so they used millions of dollars to develop a... mechanic horse? Wouldn't it be cheaper to use an actual one?

    • @prawn_emporium
      @prawn_emporium 9 років тому +3

      Lee Blue It would seem so, but there IS a reason that we've stopped using actual horses in the first place. This "mechanical horse" wouldn't be limited by fatigue, need for food/water, vulnerability to the dangers of the battlefield, disease, fright, etc. It has cost a lot, but I'm sure the lives saved and new conveniences will be well worth it once the thing's been developed further and deployed.

    • @prawn_emporium

    It needs to be quieter, longer ranged and have the ability to detect the distance and direction of enemy fire. The only good thing would be putting Javelins on it so the troops don't have to carry them. They may also want it to be able to self destruct, to keep it out of enemy hands.

  • @acubot

    A truly amazing platform. It can hold all your shit, throw some heavy armor on one side and you have mobile cover. Put auto targeting weapons on it and you've got yourself a scary ass metallic beast to draw fire and return it (remote control targeting if you are scared of getting shot by it). Play some ghost recon future soldier and you'll get an idea of how something like this could really save lives.
