- The Marine Corps Warfighting Lab in partnership with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Boston Dynamics tested an autonomous robot on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Sept. 10. Alpha Dog- The Legged Squad Support System, or LS3, demonstration was a performance test of the pack mule prototype for the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James Amos and DARPA Director Arati Prabhakar. Interviews include: Lt. Col Joe Hitt, DARPA program manager, and Brig. Gen. Mark R. Wise, Commanding General of the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory. Training takes time for each animal - once you have a working robot, you can just build them en masse. Real animals require food, sleep, can get scared or be stubborn, and may react unpredictably.
If only it didn't make more noise than a tank. Good luck being a stealthy infantry unit with this in tow.
+soundslave thinking the same thing. Maybe they are carrying too much gear? I could see them loading these up with gear and then they break down. Might as well go back to horses.
+misterdinkly Problem with horses is you have to carry the water and food for them. Of course with this thing what happens when you run out of fuel/batt - same thing.
+77Avadon77 I graduated elementary schooling so I'm aware living creatures need food and water. I'm saying a horse would be more reliable than this contraption. Needs a lot of improving is what I'm saying. I also drive a motor vehicle so I may have heard they need gasoline from time to time.
+misterdinkly Yah gotta be a smart ass don't you.
+77Avadon77 yeah, i guess I did at the time.
There's something eerily lifelike about it!
Good job guys! Keep up the good work doing what you love! Make the world a better place!
Whats the difference between this and a horse except for the horse being less noisy and thousands of times cheaper?
Dik Tittylover horse can auto refuel.
+Dik Tittylover Unlike a horse, the "robot" does not need a specialist to repair.
However, unlike a horse, this "robot" would be quite useless if flipped onto its back.
+Dik Tittylover ............. Horses and mules get scared by gunfire.... robots have no feelings
+Dik Tittylover you can throw it out of a plane;)
+Dik Tittylover Robots dont get sick. Horse and Mule need to be taken care of like people, more than a simple house pet. With something like this you can hit it with a hammer if its not behaving and it will prolly change its mind. : /
Also you'll be able to shoot at these with little effect unlike animals which only need enough sound and they will go running. As with every new tech it starts slow, sometimes silly in practicality, but give it time and it will flourish my friend. Have some faith.
If i would see something like this...
i would run aways perhaps i would crieng too :D
I'd shoot it.
Only carries 100 lb WTF?
500 lb load would be the minimum. Gear & ammo load out for squad.
Plus it's own fule.
Make it silent, or its rear support only.
I'm thinking this is a bad joke.
Just a tax payers thoughts.
That's awesome. I'm sure they're going to come up with a lot of uses for that beauty.
That is amazing!
The cows of the future here today...
+LittleScientist2011 To err is only human, but to moo is bovine?
next up is them making milk from solar cells
I look forward to seeing this in my nightmares tonight ...
Amazing technology, I really liked it.
Insane, can't imagine what we will see on 2114 :)
In the fields the bodies burning, as the war machine keeps turning.
"you have 20 seconds to comply"
-
That's why I love America!
that's so cool! If you can now make it autonomous you're set
Would be cool if it kicked the guy in the face who was pushing it from the side to make it fall lol
Wicked guy 😂
Not sure you are aware, but there's a piece of bio-tech which can do everything these machines can do and has been in use with the services for the past 10,000 years.
IT'S CALLED A HORSE!
An animal to get scared by gunshots and run off?
Well if your horses are poorly trained, they will run off.
Then who will you pay to train the horses?
***** A horse trainer.
Bruce Houdini
Who pays the trainer? Us, with our tax money, forever. If we trained 200 horses ever year or two it would probably be just as expensive to use these machines. It would be like buying instead of leasing, more expensive now but down the road it might cost less.
finally, my ride to school :DD
Military always loved new toys
cant they just take a donkey with them instead? a donkey beats this in almost every category plus it runs on grass, not money
I can see you've never tried to make a donkey work for you...lol.
Riley Blackmon lazy donkeys are quite tasty, if baked on campfire with potatoes, minced garlic, pepper, leeks and some wine.
Евгений Лыков
then you need an AlphaDog do carry all your spices and the wine ;D
headshooter44 and donkeys
And it can die... So, way better....
I bet this is how the Star Wars AT-AT started off for the Empire
yeah but don't worry....there are currently a lot of Jedi's being developed in Colorado and Washington.
The Taliban will be busy practising with tiny remote control cars and grappling hooks no doubt.
Amazing technique
The marines MOOoooving forward.
You should see the hunter models....
What are they gonna call the soldier responsible for controlling these robots - a shepherd?
+Caribbean Man SGT. JESUS.
a new MOS 93E10 robot bitch caretaker
A she-RIFF 🤓🤓
I would like to see a vid where they take one of these to one of those never-seen-the-civilization-tribes in amazonas.
Of course a white supremacists like you would love to terrorize civilizations minding their own business
AlphaDog, brighter than the average GI.
amazing
This will never result in making the infantry Soldier/Marines' load any lighter. What will happen is that they will have to take more stuff along with them and the machine here will carry the difference. That's what always happens. If you make a rucksack five pounds lighter, they will just require that the grunt carry five more pounds of kit.
Sadly you exactly right
5 lbs more beer
Yeah, they ain't gunna lighten the workload. Then again if its 5 pounds more of food or ammunition, it will make a small but possibly significant difference. You could maybe used the robot as a shield from enemy fire as well lolol.
Exactly
. .
Just put a little armor on it and use it to scare people into compliance.
I can see these things moving in a circle pattern with a squad of troops, carrying supplies and providing mobile cover.
You can feed a horse or mule or most animals for that matter on some grass and water. How do you recharge this beast after you've been in the field for a week? It's kinda like the STOL aircraft, OK for take off and landing on unimproved fields, but how do you get fuel, ammo and maintenance to them?
METAL GEEEEEEEAAAAAAUUUUUURRRRRRRRRR!!!
+GLOCO METAL GEAR??
+pitkane100 robotic animal-like weapons from a stealth videogame

@@HandleMyBallsUA-cam are you up

They should mount soldiers on these and give them lances
"A horse ! A horse !! My kingdom for a horse !!! "
And make bullet proof army style knights armour FULL PLATE
0:32 "cover and concealment" haha, this thing is so loud! what concealment!
Wow Awesome
That is scary
Does anyone else want to ride them?
What would that be????
Frostbyte6686 Robobestiality
Ewwww
Frostbyte6686 x-military here. I hadn't thought of that, but now that you mention it - I guarantee they will ride them!
I used to work on a B-52 flight line, and we had "Engine Plugs" - large heavy grade plastic intake covers about the diameter of an inflatable baby swimming pool (about 2' deep). But they were heavy duty hard plastic.
In the winter - on the alert pad, the ground crews would use these as sleds and compete in races!
Lol!
Very nice.
And as an added bonus, it will grow steel wool to keep you warm in the cold evenings.
Can you ride on it... see that would be fun :D
10's of Millions to build and deploy- The cost of a single rpg to destroy.
And it's all worth it if it brings home just one soldier.
masscashstacks
Well i guess if your stupid enough to enlist in the first place you get what you deserve right?
Shayne O'Brien**you're not your.
masscashstacks You jackass, how shall it bring home another soldier. All it does is carrying supplies (yet, probably), making loud noise, attracting attention to the squad. And don't argue about this now, there are definitely cheaper and way more options of bringing COVER onto the field. Don't tell me now it will provide cover or some sort of nonsense.
If troops need unmanned assistance by autonomous devices, there are already possibilities of providing that. Also they're expensive enough already. At the current state of this project, it's just nonsense. Just some people who dream about a world with autonomous robots etc. how ridiculous is that by now.
There are so far definitely other ways of transporting gear among a squad.
'mikichii They can be used to evacuate wounded soldiers from dangerous situations, jackass.
Awesome
Looks like pretty good targets.
Better that this gets shot than soldiers
its not ready till someone puts guns on it that how it works in merica! lol
It's way to damn loud.
I wouldn't have known what was going on if I hadn't seen that 10-second long intro.
I just read about the Animalian machines and their future in The Keepers: World War Three. F***ing mind blowing
That narrator though
optimus prime should ride this shit not a freakin dino
Is this an April fool's day feature? Armoured cars with legs next!
I KNEW THAT BOSTON DYNAMYCS WAS INCLUDED
The world is getting scary
Praying they do not get in enemy hands like most of our weapons/equipment.
This reminds me of the Polish Bear "Wojtek", a bear that carried ammo to the front lines for the soldiers, this one looks like a more Sci Fi version of that.
Keep it Up Dear
The new AudibleDog brings the enemy to you. No longer do you need to worry about sneaking around in the woods looking for the perfect opportunity to engage the enemy. Just turn on your AudibleDog and watch your enemy flock to its hypnotic rumble, like moths to flame.
Boston Dynamics, spending your tax dollars because the military industrial complex must go on.
P.S. 'merica
Yes, but can i ride it?
You can bet that's the first thing a grunt works on if he gets one of those in the field
Paul D No doubt if it's ever put into play that wounded troops would be carried on it.
Super
Should double as a cover point if they are out in the open. Is able to carry wounded? Also with advanced optics can it see potential threats.?
One mule about $500. Self fueling and can travel across rivers etc with no need for someone to control them. If it breaks down easily disposed of with just one bullet in head.
One robot pack $200,000. Needs constant fueling, breaks down in deep mud or water. Cannot swim. Very useful for locating enemy who will split their sides laughing when they see this.
You have forgot that mule needs constant feeding, drinking and it has also a numerous needs that robots doesn't have. Mules are stubborn. Also, mules can't be upgraded.
Hiperforteca
Mules are only stubborn if they don't get a drink when they want one. An experienced handler will always carry a can of Budweiser for such an event. If the mule won't move the handler will sit down somewhere confortable and enjoy the drink while the mule stops being a pain. Works every time .... hic.
Emperor of Cartoons Mule is self feeding anywhere there is plant life. Mules are very quiet compared with these things clattering away. Mules are not bullet proof but these things could be disabled with a paint gun.
TheSpiritof1969 The point is, robots can be upgraded. Far beyond limits that animals have. I bet that if you were living in 1950, you would complain about why computers are useless, because every good accountant could do the same thing. Or why radio and telephones are useless if you can use a homing pigeon or office boy.
Face it, your way of thinking is backward and non-progressive.
Hyper In the 50s technology was moving forward at an incredible rate. Anyone with half a brain knew that growing technologies were the way forward in commerce, medicine and a host of other things including war. But the hard reality is that Vietnam proved that technology was not the be all of winning a war. Just how these things lumbering away with a man behind with a control box is more efficient than a mule following at the end of a rope is lost on me.Backward thinking? LOL Don't make silly comments like that to people you do not know, I could talk for hours on some of the amazing acheivements of 21st century technologies and their historys ....... but this is not one of them. Technology for the sake of technology is a waste of resourses that would be better spent on more meaningfull things.
Jesus! My tax dollars!
they are printing...
Does it have a Detonator on it in case the enemy comes up on or if ambushed?
I read somewhere that the robot was actually too loud. Plus, What happens when it breaks and Marines gotta carry it?
why waste so much money on building an artificial donkey when you can use real ones
Because the real ones die, need food and water, and are ethically questionable to take into a warzone.
It's a sad thing so much effort is put in the pursue of more efficent ways to kill humans. Hopefully something good for civilian use will come out of these creepy machines...
Well check out more of Boston Dynamic's vids, some of those robots could be used in emergency situations, providing aid and as care units :D
This is not a weapon you dolt. This is a pack mule. The best funding for robotics comes from the military, so that's who Boston Dynamics cooperates with. I can see these being used to clean up nuclear disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima without the need to send humans in.
JustLetMeComment80 the only reason you would design something like this for a military application is if you intended at some point to replace the human with the drone. chuck a 50 cal auto targeting system on its back and a standard drone coms...a donkey would do the job for .00000000001 of the cost otherwise.
***** no idea what you are on about, i didnt say disarm the military, or anything of the sort. your comment has no bearing at all on what i said, which leads me to rebut your statement with a counter.."such an idiotic comment"
gary n
Yeah, that's really fucking useful, a robot that can't open doors and is only 5 feet tall. I could see remote control humanoid drones (decades away) replacing soldiers at some point, but not the pack mules.
Imagine this sucker as a mobile weapons platform. Now that is terrifying.
Good for moving cover too. Turn this thing into mortar/grenade shooting machine for each squad.
How about donkeys?
The special forces do use donkeys and possibly whatever local pack animals are available, but there are various reasons a robot would be easier for the average soldier.
***** You need to cool right down sir. This machine... Is far from ideal for combat.
Fuel needs, noise, sand and dust in the gears.
In many ways donkeys are still superior to this tech. A donkey can shit and piss anywhere. If it's not a desert it can eat on the go. It's not going to stay like this forever. Tech is advancing. But it's going to have to get A LOT more efficient, and A LOT more robust/silent.
***** First off all its noisy yes secnond many computers have errors so this machince can have an error and stop working for no reason a 100 explosive or maybe less can destroy that so they wasted a half million dollars thing that should of went to a school a park to pay our us deb
***** well that's worth less its costs to much think about us and them we are killing incont child's over there we are killing for no dam reason they are supsoue to protect us b y invading country yeah bull shit they are killing guys that can barrlley afford ak's and cars how in the hell can they send a dam missle to usa thats whey to far
you know im right
Or you just use a freaking mule
can you use a mule as cover or will the mule stay calm under fire?
***** they have used mules and pack animals for centuries. several breeds are specifically used for military use. the only reason russia lost in Afghanistan was due to the pack animals carrying weapons and supplies into the mountains out of reach of the Russians. machines break down more frequently than animals get sick and cost 1000s of times more to replace or repair. if you look at efficiency, machines are less than 1% as efficient as animals which have evolved efficiency over millions of years.
gary n _"the only reason russia lost in Afghanistan was due to the pack animals carrying weapons and supplies into the mountains out of reach of the Russians."_
o_O ...please... just stop. The Russians lost in Afghanistan for the same reason the Taliban are still operating in Aghanistan under NATO, which is that the mujahedin fled over the border to Pakistan, got supplies there and then went back into Afghanistan to do quick operations. My neighbor served there with Doctors without Borders back during the Russian conflict and brought back with him photographs that showed the actual reason why the Russians lost in a military sense as well. Those reasons included Russian choppers and tanks being taken out with portable missile platforms from the US. They included repairing said tanks and using it against the Russians afterwards etc. I can assure you that the Afghans were never out of range of the Russian choppers when they were in Afghanistan and in the beginning of the war they were getting pounded to bits. This would likely have continued were it not for aid from the US that let them counter Russian air dominance.
Amusingly, said choppers learned that to stay reasonably safe they had to fly so high that they were almost invisible from ground level at the very top of the mountain regions. The very idea that mules would allow you to store supplies out of reach from the Russians is just bizarre.
Gnomefro they carried the ground to air missiles (called stingers if you were wondering) on pack animals. the same pack animals would provide meat, often while continuing to carry the missiles afterwards.once the missile delivered, the pack animal was killed and eaten. small amounts of meat were removed from the animals during the journy, but not enough to incapacitate the beast. then they would pack mud on to stop infection. the entire transport system in the mountains was based on pack animals.the russian choppers were not able to get close enough to engage effectively due to the stingers and heavy guns ...which in turn were there due to the pack animals...take away the animals, and there would have been no stingers and no heavy guns. just a lot of angry guys sitting on a hill firing ak's into the air and running away.
you try carrying a ground to air missile through the mountains from Pakistan on your shoulder and see how far you get. :)
C'est tout simplement etraordinaire
ok this is it !
they buy this shit yet they wont buy dragon armor... glad im out
dragon armor is about 15 lbs lighter and weight comes with the job. This is typical darpa rackets
Emperor of Cartoons did u not read what I said? Dragon armor saves lives ypu fucking troll
just use a Donkey.
Nice :D
so much for element of surprise, that thing is so loud and huge, and how much fuel will it take, will it have to carry its own feul in separate containers when it needs to refuel? but a lot can change in 24 months.
makes as much sence as robots from pacific rim... americans you do realize billions of your tax money is wasted on something that can be replaced by mules, horses, quadbikes? For god sake just attach some huge carbon wheels to the backpack and carry it. It's like back in 60-es when you spend hundred thousands to creat a pen that could be used in space... and vodka drinking russians simply used pencils.
Do you realize zero fucks given.
Harry Rosewood yeah but....it wont be as cool ;)
1) the knowledge collected wile making such a robot will aid in future inventions
2) it's much harder to kill then a mile or luggage carrying animal
3) it's hands free
4) it doesn't need food
5) it's just fricken cool!
Yes we do, but we're proud
+Harry Rosewood a mule or a horse can't transmit what it sees to your laptop or transmit it through sattelite, a manned vehicle like quadbikes will carry within it fatality risk, although an autonomous quadbike might actually more advantageous for the purposes involved, but I can see situations where quadruplegy is superior to wheeled vehicles, especially in an urban warfare scenarios.
hmm... so they used millions of dollars to develop a... mechanic horse? Wouldn't it be cheaper to use an actual one?
Lee Blue It would seem so, but there IS a reason that we've stopped using actual horses in the first place. This "mechanical horse" wouldn't be limited by fatigue, need for food/water, vulnerability to the dangers of the battlefield, disease, fright, etc. It has cost a lot, but I'm sure the lives saved and new conveniences will be well worth it once the thing's been developed further and deployed.
Rene Stanneveld although resupply and maintenance are common parts of war, it is true that upkeep for something like this would be pretty costly
...yeah, the U.S. military budget has been pretty much overboard lol.
and to think that some still want more, huh?
ONE BULLET AND ITS SCRAP METAL !
Good~!!
What a huge waste of US Dollars
If they want use robots to carry stuff it is still easier to have a donkey unless those things are gonna fight.
Don't you think the enemy could take this out with one shot ? Another wasted million.
Ok, you sold me I will take one. Whats the cost?
Aha I got a bridge for sale, cheap. If you buy it you can collect tolls.
Hey Drew, glad to see you are applying yourself! Don't you think the "Enemy" could easily stop one ?
Gayer than two boys naked in the woods.
Thank you Boston Dynamics for the cool robots!
This is when regular people buy a car except scientists
That's cool.
It needs to be quieter, longer ranged and have the ability to detect the distance and direction of enemy fire. The only good thing would be putting Javelins on it so the troops don't have to carry them. They may also want it to be able to self destruct, to keep it out of enemy hands.
A truly amazing platform. It can hold all your shit, throw some heavy armor on one side and you have mobile cover. Put auto targeting weapons on it and you've got yourself a scary ass metallic beast to draw fire and return it (remote control targeting if you are scared of getting shot by it). Play some ghost recon future soldier and you'll get an idea of how something like this could really save lives.
Wow good 👍👍👍
you can clearly see how big and strong it is. I for see this system carrying hurt soldiers to safety.
That thing will still never be better than a real dog.
Robo-cows racing now! :D
the mule and horse were perfected 1000s of years ago
100 countries still use them
I understand. But I don't support Animal labor.
1:42 Hahahaha they look so funny running together
Wtf is that
cool support stuff, is it water poof? can it storm a beach? if the unit follows the civilian contractors ( who are wearing over-sized n over weight communications systems for the unit to follow, then whats the point?) lets take these thing to a dry fire scenerio and see what happens
What an expensive horse/cow! XD
The last shot of it (1:51), all I can think of is a mobile light artillery lowering itself into position.
Damn this is 7years ago
I wonder how easy to trip them up, deft use of a scaffold pole or a big bunch of barbed wire thrown under?
What about the noise of the engine? Can't they throw in an electric engine, to cut down on the noise.
Put a flat bed on top and now you can transport injured soldiers. Very cool stuff.
