Finally our robotics course is out. We worked on this course for more than 10 months -

Note that we have forwards kness but BACKWARDS ankles. This is why we are able to create reaction force with the ground. If Spot was also going to have three joints (hip knee ankle) I suspect it would also have received a forwards knee and backwards ankle configuration.
