Your technique is so smooth and clean. Unfortunately I tried it on one of my paintings and it peeled more than it should. I had a hard time repairing the damaged area.
Hi! I use Nazdar too, but when I remove the excess gold, it happens that the paint cames off too… I‘ve something very similar like pierre d‘argent..I have also pure shellpouder..but it still cames off… and the gold is also very blury… thanks for your help!
@letteraetc9990 Paint coming off with the tape is going to be an adhesion issue. You can rubb the tape on your clothing first so it doesn't stick so hard to the paint. It makes me wonder what you prep before paint was like, climate conditions, and how hard you are cutting through the tape, amongst other things. Lots of variables.
Wow !!! Thank you. I build chess boards with gold leaf inlay for the algebraic notations and when I touch up I always have leaf stuck around inlay and have to resand and sometimes extra finish. You saved me hrs of work hats off to ya
Question, Did that gold leaf that you peeled off with tape had gold leaf grip glue underneath? mine does. But I will try this tape thing, it just might work even with the glue. Thanks.
@leeleelee8672 in this case, it did not. Sometimes the excess leaf wants to stick to surfaces even without the size (glue). However, if you are trying to remove from where the size is, start with tape. Do that until all of the leaf is gone. Then remove the glue with the appropriate solvents. Always test solvents somewhere else first to make sure they will not mess up the paint layer. I have another more recent video showing leaf removal from size.
I'm using a water based adhesive and I'm wondering how long should I wait before removing my tape in order to get the crispest lines? Or do you have any tips in order to get really crisp edges
Another trick I've used on things like glossy motorcycle tanks, is to cut a potato in half and rub the potato up to the edges of where you've applied the size. Once the potato juice is dry you can lay your leaf and it won't stick to the background color. I was told years ago this is because of the starch in the potato, not sure of the exact science, but it works!
I can totally picture that working, and cleaning off easy. Thanks for sharing. Been enjoying your videos.. Someday I hope to take a trip down your way and visit your little town.
@@JackFlemingArtistry gessoed canvas using acrylic paints as a base and then “gold” leaf on top. The gold leaf is so thin that it just crumbles and sticks to everything, with or without glue!
@reneemacfarland two things that I think could help. One, the are some very thin and light powders that you can dust the surface with prior to laying your size. They do not effect the size, and keep the leaf from sticking everywhere else. I don't remember the names of them though. I know one of them is a cosmetic product. Second, addressing thin and crumbling leaf, try patent leaf. I order mine through W&B Gold Leaf.
Thank you so much! You just saved me from a HUGE headache
@@DarleneD1026 awesome
I never would have thought of that! Thank you!
It works.
@@JackFlemingArtistry Yes! Thank you!!
Thats awesome! Thanks. Ive struggled with the same thing and never would have thought of tape
It really is crazy how simple the answer is.
Omggggggg, I’ve been so disappointed with some of my work and you gave me a miracle 😂, thank you.
That's good to hear. I always hope that these videos help somebody.
Great tip and gorgeous art! Thank you!
Thank you
That's a good and helpful tip 👍 do you think it will work to a wood art? I have the same problem in my wood sign.
I get extreme unwanted sticking. But you have shed some light. Thanks. And good day. 🇺🇲🍺
I am glad that this video has helped somebody. I don't get it too often, but knowing how to overcome it cuts out the stress.
Thanks so much for this tape tip. I have gold glitter specs all over my wooded coaters that are Matt textured and wood grain I hope this works

Fantastic, had the same problem when learning gold leafing, I can finally tidy my artwork up, thank you!

I am sorry to hear that. Are you saying that the tape pulled the paint as well?

It is such an easy trick. Glad it helped.
Thanks Jack, great information.
Thank you for watching. I thought it was a tip worth sharing.
What if there is size underneath? Say you errantly splashed some size and didn’t notice it and you leafed over it?
Good question. I tape pull until the leaf is removed, and then clean the size with solvent.
@@JackFlemingArtistry Many thanks, Jack.

I have no experience with water-based adhesive. Sorry to be of no help.
Why didn't I think of that?? 🙄🙄🙄😄😄 Thank you. xx
😁
But what to do with calligraphy writing? Can't apply tape for so much curvy writing
If it is on a painted mental surface, I still use tape to remove stubborn excess leaf.

I tried this technique on canvas and it didn’t work. Any recommendations on how to remove excess gold leaf from canvas?
I have never used gold leaf on canvas. Raw canvas, gessoed canvas, or painted with water or oil based paint?
