- Опубліковано 25 лют 2021
- Part 2 of the living room remodel and today we're tackling how to frame and finish a new gas fireplace. Featuring a tapered top and wrap-around mantel, this is one of my favorite projects to date. It's a perfect focal point for the living room, and we use it every day - especially through the cold Minnesota winter.
Follow along with the next few videos as I finish up the fireplace mantel and revamp the kitchen island, which divides the kitchen and living room.

I just want to speak to the gentleman in this video. Dude, you have got yourself a keeper. Treat her well.
I was thinking the same thing.
Wow! Not only is this exactly what I was looking for; but you are a total professional at tutorial videos. So comprehensive ~ you didn't leave anything out. Great shots of what you were doing so we could actually see the work happening. And I think it is awesome that you are so calm and with your little ones around while you're working and letting them play and try and get involved. It will serve them so well in their future endeavours. My parents included me in the same way; and now I can make and do anything I want. Great mom! Great DIYer!
K you are a bad a**!!! I'm so impressed!! Thank you for the informational video!!
You are a boss building a fireplace and being a Mom with those little ones crawling around! You go girl!
Great info on the noncombustible piece. Thank you!
Fresh content! Wish I'd known all this when I was a young, unlicensed contractor trying to survive in a right-to-work state.
this is the first fireplace that I actually love. it's classic and will never go out of style. I hate these new ones. great job!!
Very nice work. Gave me some inspiration. With little ones helping out to boot! I like the tapered framing look. You make it look easy.
Stumbled across your video and I’m completely impressed on your knowledge and skill. Doing a feature wall myself and it’s definitely challenging , looks effortless on your part. Keep up the great work!
Great video!
well done fantastic work , your little helper deserves a bonus
Haha right?!
Well done, this was inspiring. Makes me want to do muddying and taping and I’ve never ever experienced that desire before. Thanks for the vid.
I thought I was good, but I have nothing on you! You killed it. Great instructions also. Way to do it all, mom! 💕

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for posting!
Cool project, and looks good on completion.

Nice job! My wife wants me to rip out our fireplace trim work and surround and also put a floating mantle on. I’ll be looking for your video on that too. Thanks!
Coming soon!

Well done, awesome job.

Nicely done!
Thanks!
Wow an incredible job. It is so beautifully done. I love the taper and I’m so impressed by your skills. I have no idea how to frame that let alone everything else. I love your staging as well so instant sub from me.
Beautiful job! ❤
Great work !
Love this! I’m gonna copy this for a vent hood!
Very beautiful!!
Perfect job!!!
Great work. You go girl.
Very impressive. I can honestly say that I feel emasculated here as someone still learning about the hearth business.😂 But Awesome vid. Thank you.
Hahah I'm glad it was helpful 😂
excellent wok, I was wondering about the non-combustible area around fireplace, great to see the step by step install
well done very nice work.
You smart, you saved alot on pricing by doing the frame work yourself. 👍🏾
wow that is a great job
Awesome video !
Dang! Talk about Super Moms!!
Great video. I have similar project on a new house that I jus bought. I love the finished project.
Excellent work! Looks great. I had the exact same feeling about the gas lines and exhaust piping when putting in my gas stove. I thought about DIY for approx 1/2 second but the image of my house turning into a giant mushroom cloud of fire got me to open my wallet. Say "Hi" to your crew for me :-)
Haha exactly! No need to burn the house down :)
Very helpful!
You go girl!
That kid has mad skills...
Looks great! Go Bobcats!
Great video! Came in with the drywall and non-combustible requirement question and got my answer! Cant you use cement board for the whole lower section so you can finish it flush?
Beautiful!! How did you learn how to do all of that!! Totally amazing what you did!
I hope you get a ton of SUBSCRIBERS
That looks amazing, I love the taper! What angle did you use for the taper? Keep the content coming, you’re a great teacher!!
Thanks! It's 7° taper on both sides
Very nice! I see the outlet there. Do you intend to hang a tv? If so, where would you secure the brackets? I’m interested in doing something very similar with my fireplace so I appreciate the detailed video :)
Excellent vid! Plans available for the frame / taper top?
Clever girl
Looks great! How much of the Portola clay did you need to use to cover this area?
Very impressed with this DIY project! I'm planning on the same Portola finish with a cement board frame around the fireplace.
What did you use on the edges/corners? Did you need a corner tool to get around the cement board frame (the outside, not the rounded inside where you said you did it by hand).
Great work! I have the same fireplace and am doing essentially the same thing you did because it looks so good! Did you also apply Bullseye 123 cement board?
I never thought of a Gas fireplace I suppose less maintenance then wood or pellets.
Wow it’s beautiful, amazing job! What’s the size of the vent pipe? I have a junk space heater and would love to get gas insert like that one. I put in a furnace 2 yrs ago but miss a flaming fireplace.
I'm about to install a fireplace myself. How wide did you get your furnace and what type of venting do you recommend. Thanks!
Hello Tylynn, I have watched your video several times now, getting ready to diy my own fireplace. I have two questions about yours that I'm hoping you can help me with. I have looked at a lot of tapered chimney forms; and I really like the proportions of yours. Was there a ratio you used in how to get the top dimensions relative to the base width or did you just eyeball it as you were making it and settled on where you liked it visually? Also, I can't tell from the video; but is it tapered in two directions (side to side as well as front to back) or only tapered side to side? Thanks very much! Karen
Looks awesome, you did an amazing job! How did you know when you needed to sister 2x4s and in what pattern you needed to place them? Trying to frame a corner unit and I have no idea where to start. Thanks!
Looks like its to meet the depth of the board they're being joined to, if that makes sense. 2x4's aren't really 2x4 anymore, they're 1.5x3.5, so that extra 1/2 inch shim between two boards creates the 3.5" thickness to join to the perpendicular board.
Loved this! We are just starting a fireplace project. We were going to tile it but want to do this now. What color did you use on the Portola clay?
She wrote in the description that the clay color is “Brooks”.
Looks nice. Curious, what was your distance to combustibles in front of the fireplace?
I have a square gas fireplace with tiles around it. two beautifuo windows with shutters on each side and 3 avobe fireplace. Can I reshape fireplace to a rectangular shape and make it longer so I can place my 75 inch tv avobe ? right now it looks akward because tv is too big for fireplace. Maybe if I make fireplace rectangular and longer than tv it will look better?
You could have used bullnose corner bead for a more rounded look
Did you not have to do anything with code or inspection before putting in a vented gas unit??
Love the fireplace! How much did it cost to build? I want to add a fireplace and I'm trying to figure out if it cost less to buy one or have one built.
That complete job with gas line and venting would cost approximately 6-9k for a stove shop to install and finish and that is with the unit included.
I have a pvc pipe sticking out of my fireplace and doesn’t appear to have any function. Do you have any idea what this could be?
how much is depth after installation?
Ballpark on install price? I'm near buffalo and want to do something similar, trying to guage the project cost.
Why did you change the framing?
Nice job, why can't my wife do this? I wish you had shown more detail on the electrical. I noticed an outlet against the interior wall. Did you disconnect that outlet? How did they get power to the fireplace? You know you can't bury an electrical box, so I hope you didn't do that. I am guessing you hired in an electrician? Otherwise, well done. I am planning to install a gas fireplace in my bedroom. You should be on HGTV!
What were the dimensions of your frame?
Don’t you have to use cement boards?
I used cement board where the fireplace specs required - about 3" around the fireplace unit. The specs for your particular unit will tell you where to install the proper materials.
Nice job with the fireplace and damaging your kids hearing!
Great job!
