Man, I'm a character action aficionado and consider myself to be a pretty competent VIIR player, especially with Tifa... but somehow I never knew you could cancel Whirling Uppercut into her Level 3 enders. This changes everything. Thank you for the clear and easy to understand guide. Time to get back to hard mode and beat the shit out of some things with Tifa!
The other thing about the uppercut -> enders: the entire sequence is dodge cancellable and focused strike cancellable, essentially making them 100% safe as long as you have a bar of ATB. I forgot to cover these options. And also, after focused strike makes contact, you can cancel her backward bounce into a divekick which is super good because the action of evading damage with focused strike refunds the cost, so it's just a small interruption that happens to do a chunk of damage too. 🤙
The work the devs put into Tifa for Rebirth and Remake is amazing. I never even knew you could do these stuff since I just cash out my charges once I get level 3. In the OG game I remember she was one of the weaker party member (apart from speedrun strats). You basically need to force yourself to make her work near the end
Side note but I do remember Devs giving her a really deep and complex tool kit (relatively) in FF Dissidia 012. Similarly they gave you no real explanation to how it all functions
I didn't know about that persistent chi-trap built-in into the lvl3 combo string. I just do the uppercut cancel into the non-persistent version to build ATB then change to Unbridled Strength to drop the chunky combo. Good to know, though!
Amazing, Tifa is my favorite, I have 190hrs in the game and learned a lot from this video. Thanks! Also, after some thinking I realized that the Genji gloves are kind of useless on Tifa, like she doesnt even need it. She has basic 1 ATB attacks that do close to 10k damage, its really ridiculous
Yep, fury ring is usually the accessory of choice. Try using it in tandem with an ATB assist materia Barrett casting barrier and/or bravery for even more damage, and to counteract the 30% increased damage taken from the Berserk status.
@@R_C32 I usually always have enemy skill on Tifa so I use Sonic Boom for Bravery and Faith. I actually have it as an aerial shortcut. Lately, I've been using her with Tiger Fangs for the selfish buff up to extend the duration, but Tifa builds ATB so fast it's kinda trivial. I'm trying to figure out which weapon is the best for her. Normally I use the Kaiser Knuckles but it seems all her weapons come with tradeoffs, there is no clear cut best weapon for her. I'm just experimenting and seeing what I like best
@@devon9374 I think most people go dragon claws. @@devon9374 Kaiser Knuckles are best for raw damage, and the concentration perk is very good. However I really like weapon ability ATB refund on the dragon claws. You need weapon level 9 to unlock it but that extra bit of refund allows a lot of shenanigans. Such as triple ATB skills with skill master. Usually you can't use 3 in a row without getting a bit of extra ATB from attacks because the skill master materia only gives like .9 bars instead of 1 whole bar. But with skill master .9 is all you need to cash it out instantly. The hit to strength is very small too.

3rd time coming back looking for this video. Now if I can get Sephiroth to not start the fights in aggro. Got the Gotter on 3 accounts but on my main account, Seph is calling in the chains as soon as the fight starts.
What are your thoughts on a mage Tifa build with the strength > magic materia? Do you also happen to know if the chi-trap uppercut cancel (the non-weapon ability one) scales off your magic stat, rather than your attack stat? I believe the normal weapon ability chi-trap does, but not sure about the uppercut cancelled one.
A magic Tifa build would be fun to play with but it would be a huge damage sacrifice. 99% of Tifa's damage comes from ATB abilities, particularly during staggers. Chi Trap isn't a very powerful ability, and her UF combo Chi Trap has really bad attack power. 5 or 6 hits of 50 damage compared to the ender which does about 600 total. It's not designed to do a lot of damage, it's designed to build a lot of stagger. I wouldn't recommend it for serious play but I always recommend experimentation for fun.
@@aethertruck Makes sense. I was moreso thinking about damage through exploiting elemental weaknesses and with genji glove -aga spells since she generates ATB so fast with the uppercut chi-trap cancel. Could possibly spam the spells out really fast with how much ATB she generates.
So I'm curious, Tifa has that property in her Folio that buffs damage while in Chi levels 1 and 2, but it specifically mentions unbridled strength. Do those buffs also apply under Unfettered? One fun fact with Unfettered as well: Her Triangle will, at chi 2, also leave you in the air like whirling uppercut, so you can use Rage and Fall for mega atb and divekick or whatever other air move there. Probably not better than uppercut divekick and staying at chi 2 but its another route. P.S. I saw your video soloing Rulers with Tifa, I had NO idea you could divekick after focused strike. Dunno why I never thought of that.
You're correct, but in all my testing it seems certain that UF gains the same benefit. My most recent video contains footage from which one can infer this, with multiple true strikes landing at similar percents at different chi levels, and decisively higher damage is awarded at UF3 compared to zero chi
Being able to dive kick out of focused strike makes using focused strike to dodge so much more appealing. The entire Fury cancel loop is 100% cancellable into Focus strike making it very attractive to muscle memory your way into the loop and simply watching out for attacks you need to dodge
Yeah. Uppercuts are already a major part of her optimal ATB generation route. Divekick is her strongest ATB skill (besides Trinity Strike which is drawn out and backloaded) and it cleanly cancels out of the uppercut. True strikes are best used in the first half of stagger and divekicks are better in the last half after you've accrued some bonus.
So just to make sure I understood this correctly, in order to build quick ATB with unfettered fury, I hold square to get the uppercut, and then to cancel, I just press square again? no need of having to press circle and then square, correct? btw, thanks for the video! learned a lot.
You are correct. You can actually achieve the cancel and another uppercut by holding the button during the cancel. So the two hit loop is achieved with a single button press
Sorry if this is a dumb question but unfettered fury changes her attacks to be magic based right? So would the best build for her be using her gloves with the highest magic stats and using unfettered fury rather than highest physical stats gloves and using unbridled strength? Because her other attacks like divekick will still be physical damage based right?
@@aethertruck theres a materia that reverses the strength and magic stats, since Tifa has the highest strength in the game that means she can probably reach the highest magic in the game as well with it, havent tested it yet
@@alexisc.7887 i haven't "tested" it but I have equipped it. It only seems to switch the str/magic bonuses from materia. I'd like to learn more but I'm not interested in testing myself.
It does work very well with high magic stat Crystal Gloves, atk matk switch, and str up It makes her unfettered fury attacks much stronger and gives tifa just a little bit under cloud's peak magic power
Depends on your situation. The ATB generation of a fury cancel is never worth sacrificing for the stagger generated by Rage and Fall unless you immediately build Unfettered back up. I would only do this if I had 0 ATB and if the enemy was pressured with a very low stagger build. (0 ATB because Rage and Fall/Omniflurry generate generous ATB, low stagger because you NEVER want to push an enemy into stagger outside of max Unfettered level, and you can double Unfettered after you land them both) Focused Strike is free if you dodge something while using it and it's usually very easy to find something to dodge. It generates stagger a little faster than the Unfettered combo string, but spends ATB instead of building ATB. It's probably worth alternating Focused Strike with the combo string on enemies that stop attacking while pressured, and if you have ATB stagger materia, you can freely push enemies into stagger with Focused Strike since you get that ATB back. But you always want to enter stagger with max chi and 2 bars of ATB so you can fully capitalize on the opportunity.
@@aethertruck Wow! So technical! I love your suggestions. Thanks for sharing your strategy. I just wanted to find the best way to stagger enemies in and out of pressure states but you went above and beyond. 👍
@@aethertruckThanks.So for building stagger is it better to do combo strings at lvl3 or do more uppercuts? Goals is to build stagger asap with trans module.
@@LightningShiver the combo string is good if you don't have any ATB but you should be using Focused strike or blizzaga once you have some ATB. Rage and fall triangle skill is also very good for building stagger but you need to spend the ATB that it generates on getting back to maximum level chi. The best route is going to change depending on how much stagger you want to build and how long the enemy will be pressured so there isn't really a best answer for all scenarios.
Wait, so, you’re using either unbridled or unfettered? You can’t use both at the same time? Like what are the mechanics? Say i got omnistrike level unbridled and i use unfettered fury, what happens?
Using either of Unbridled or Unfettered always increases chi level by 1, to a maximum of 2. Using Unfettered during Unbridled 1 will make you Unfettered 2. Using Unbridled during Unfettered 1 will make you Unbridled 2. She can't be both. Her current stance is indicated by the afterglow of her fists, either orange or pink, and which triangle move is currently available to her. Rise and Fall: Unbridled 2 Rage and Fall: Unfettered 2 Omnistrike: Unbridled 1 Omniflurry: Unfettered 1 Whirling Uppercut: Neither, chi level 0. Using Rise and Fall always brings you down to Unbridled 1. Using Rage and Fall always brings you down to Unfettered 1.
Hold square for uppercut, then let go of square Press square again while uppercut is happening Repeat Only works in Unfettered Fury max rank (Rage and Fall)
The uppercut cancel of UF is pretty much what makes the ATB work. Without that, it's just weaker and staggers well, which I think is fair on its own. With the broken ATB generation of the uppercut cancel it's hard to justify using US except during staggers
@@aethertruck So most of the time UF is superior, but maybe it is worth using 1 ATB to swap to US when the enemy is around 95% stagger, in case you're gonna spam the Uppercut + Lvl 2 finisher constantly after you have 0 ATB since they do massive damage (you're doing 5K with those on Titan which IMO is a LOT for a non ATB move)
I would think whatever gets you ATB back fastest to spam divekick after a couple of true strikes during stagger would be the winner, in this case that should be UF.
True Strike is always good as her first two or three abilities under stagger when she has full ATB when solo. The extra base damage of divekick makes them better to use at the tail end of staggers than true strikes because true strikes have lower base damage than divekicks. True strike isn't a bad skill when the enemy isn't staggered because it is also fast, but these uppercut cancel divekicks have much lower effective ATB cost, more range, etc. They're much better to use on an unstaggered enemy
Never really can justify using lvl 2 or lvl 3 US or UF, I just uppercut with dive kick. The 2 wasted ATB bars you use to get to lvl 3 can be DPS with dive kick. I never seen a situation in the game where spending ATB to get to lvl 3 was better than just putting out DPS in the form of divekick. And this becomes especially apparent once you get the end game items and max out your materia. I think using UF to build stagger is obviously useful, but US to me is completely useless
You're missing the perk in her folio that gives her passive damage for each bonus level of chi. At level 2 she gets a 5% passive boost. At level 3 she gets a 10% passive boost. This stacks with another copy of the skill found on one of her weapons. That alone makes it worth hopping up to chi 3 but if you're not using fury cancels, you're not playing optimally, and you need level 3 for those too
@@aethertruck How about during a Stagger though? Is it more efficient to spend your Chi levels on Unbridled Strength, Omni-Strike, etc. to build the Stagger %? Or is it more worth it to hold onto the Level 3 for the damage buff and the extended combos?
omnistrike (and I presume RnF) gives you a whole ATB on hit. so idk you can do 2 dive kicks or you can do something like US>Omnistrike>US>Omnistrike>DiveKx2. I'm not really following why you're saying it's completely useless.
@@DannyPotato RnF gives you like, 1.1 ATB on hit. Omnistrike gives like 0.8-0.9 ATB on hit. You could RnF -> Unbridled Strength forever but RnF only gives 20% stagger bonus and takes a lot longer. The only way to do it forever with Omnistrike is if you have haste up. But if you have haste up, that boosts the ATB gain of a fury cancel to like, 1.3. And if you combine that with ATB Charge Rate Up and Weapon Ability ATB Recovery, you can do 1 fury cancel then do 2.2 Uppercut->Divekick. So every 5th fury cancel, you'll have enough ATB overflow to do 3 uppercut->divekick in a row. I've done 4 in a row before with a primed skill master materia. On top of that, Tifa gains a passive damage buff when she's at max level of US or UF with the folio skill. If you're gonna spam Omnistrikes, your damage is already compromised because you can't use omnistrike at max chi. Matter of fact, you can only use it at zero chi because chi falls off before it lands. You can argue that a fury cancel is a waste of time because the damage is pretty low. Like 1200 total if not buffed. I would argue then that rapidly using Unbridled Strength is also a waste of time, because it does no damage. Fury cancels generate mega ATB, that's where the math favors them. More than omnistrike, and you get to stay at max chi while using them, holding onto the passive damage boost provided by folio Utterly Unbridled Strength (I tested this too and it indeed applies to Unfettered Fury) I put out a video a few weeks ago comparing fury cancels to the standard unbridled strength stagger rotation. Unbridled held its own but it clearly lost. I wouldn't call it useless, it's just clearly worse for multiple reasons. The only advantage it has is that it's easier to do (and True Strike isn't available until chapter 13, so the free ATB can't apply to stagger bonus til then) The comparison you posted was a bit unfair. At level 3 chi, I can do 2 divekick, or 2 true strike, or whatever I want, but then I get my ATB back with fury cancels. It's not just divekick -divekick -useless. The ATB generation of a fury cancel is much higher than omnistrike. So instead of US - Omnistrike - repeat, you can True Strike - Fury cancel - repeat and always get better results. I've done the math several times in several ways. I don't know that I've said that it's "completely useless". It's not useless. It just gives a clearly worse result every time. Edit: I see that you were responding to the OP, 30% nevermind activated
Another fun fact I just recently discovered. If you're level 3 of either unbridled or unfettered, you can switch with 1 ATB to the other fighting stance and maintain your level 3
It also works at level 2. The stance moves always increase chi level even if you select the opposite stance. For example, imagine being at level 3 with no ATBs. The triangle attack drops you to level 2 but it gives you a massive chunk of ATB, so after using it you can use the opposite stance and you'll be level 3 in it. This is the best way to switch from unfettered to unbridled during a stagger. Stagger string, unfettered/full ATB True Strike True Strike Rage and Fall Unbridled Rise and Fall True Strike Omnistrike That's a good bread and butter stagger string to have in your pocket.
They should teach this stuff in public schools.
They do if you don't hand your lunch money over. 😂

@@alexisc.7887 i haven't "tested" it but I have equipped it. It only seems to switch the str/magic bonuses from materia. I'd like to learn more but I'm not interested in testing myself.
@@aethertruck oh I thought it took the whole strength stat and reversed it. Thats a bummer
It does work very well with high magic stat
Crystal Gloves, atk matk switch, and str up
It makes her unfettered fury attacks much stronger and gives tifa just a little bit under cloud's peak magic power
Is it better to do stagger damage with Unfettered than using a full ATB with Focus Strike?
Depends on your situation. The ATB generation of a fury cancel is never worth sacrificing for the stagger generated by Rage and Fall unless you immediately build Unfettered back up. I would only do this if I had 0 ATB and if the enemy was pressured with a very low stagger build. (0 ATB because Rage and Fall/Omniflurry generate generous ATB, low stagger because you NEVER want to push an enemy into stagger outside of max Unfettered level, and you can double Unfettered after you land them both)
Focused Strike is free if you dodge something while using it and it's usually very easy to find something to dodge.
I learned I know nothing about the combat system in the game after beating it.
Just asking. The combo is repeatedly pressing square or holding square?
Combo is multiple presses. The uppercut is holding square
This is awesome
Rise and Fall: Unbridled 2
Rage and Fall: Unfettered 2
Omnistrike: Unbridled 1
Omniflurry: Unfettered 1
Whirling Uppercut: Neither, chi level 0.
Using Rise and Fall always brings you down to Unbridled 1. Using Rage and Fall always brings you down to Unfettered 1.
@@aethertruck perfect explanation tysm. 10/10. 🙌
Is level 3 = 3 Unbridled Strengths?
That's what I think. It increases with each unbridled strength you use.
No, unbridled strength/unfettered fury only increases twice. Level 1 is base form tifa
@@jiito808is correct. Level 1 is neither Unbridled or Unfettered. It displays Whirling Uppercut.
Level 2 Unbridled displays Omnistrike.
Level 2 Unfettered displays Omniflurry.
Level 3 Unbridled displays Rise and Fall.
Level 3 Unfettered displays Rage and Fall.
3:03 how to press the buttons to get like this?
Hold square for uppercut, then let go of square
Press square again while uppercut is happening
Repeat
Only works in Unfettered Fury max rank (Rage and Fall)
So damage wise UF is almost 5 times weaker than US, but it is way better at building stagger and ATB, right?
Me watching this: write that down! write that down!
knowing full well ill never ever get to play this game😑
Fury is better with meter management.
Power lady
True strike isn't her bread and butter?
Too slow
True Strike is always good as her first two or three abilities under stagger when she has full ATB when solo. The extra base damage of divekick makes them better to use at the tail end of staggers than true strikes because true strikes have lower base damage than divekicks. True strike isn't a bad skill when the enemy isn't staggered because it is also fast, but these uppercut cancel divekicks have much lower effective ATB cost, more range, etc. They're much better to use on an unstaggered enemy
Fury Lv2 hold [ ] 2time a lot of ATB
Someone told me ff7 rebirth combat was just mash attack though.😮
nooo way theres a bunch of different things you can do on every character, and for players that like breaking combat ff7 rebirths system is perfect
They must be only playing on easy
Or taking 2 hrs to beat normal enemies and just downing potions
@@12345678abracadabra their name xbox-something or other, they may have had an agenda.
Absolutely not. Ff7 is one of those where mashing gets you killed.
@@Bynoe I'm gonna test this right now and make a brief video summarizing my findings. 🤙
omnistrike (and I presume RnF) gives you a whole ATB on hit. so idk you can do 2 dive kicks or you can do something like US>Omnistrike>US>Omnistrike>DiveKx2.
More than omnistrike, and you get to stay at max chi while using them, holding onto the passive damage boost provided by folio Utterly Unbridled Strength (I tested this too and it indeed applies to Unfettered Fury)
I put out a video a few weeks ago comparing fury cancels to the standard unbridled strength stagger rotation. Unbridled held its own but it clearly lost. I wouldn't call it useless, it's just clearly worse for multiple reasons. The only advantage it has is that it's easier to do (and True Strike isn't available until chapter 13, so the free ATB can't apply to stagger bonus til then)
The comparison you posted was a bit unfair.
Stagger string, unfettered/full ATB
True Strike
True Strike
Rage and Fall
Unbridled
Rise and Fall
True Strike
Omnistrike
That's a good bread and butter stagger string to have in your pocket.
