- I need to get the drop arm off my steering box to fit the Gwyn Lewis drop arm conversion kit. I tried using pullers but to no avail.. so I bought the Laser dedicated tool.. but does it work??

I would like to just state here that it is not necessary to remove the steering box to remove the drop arm. I am stripping my chassis for refurbishment and decided to pull the drop arm afterwards. It would have been better to do it on the truck as i wouldn't have had all the issues with holding it.
That was a good description - they can be a bugger to get off! On mine I set a ball bearing in the end of the screw, and when under tension, a good clout with the hammer on the end of the bolt, and they pop off
Nice one about the paper towel!
I may have a chat with Michel and see if I can have a tour of his factory up the road that make it - could be an interesting video!

Hi Mike.. sorry, are you saying this puller is made in Canada??
....I'm amazed that came off that easily....I once broke a 10 ton hydraulic puller getting my Defender one off!!
I think Eric, because it is a dedicated tool and is solid, it just has to come off?
I was expecting that to pop off with a bit of bang 😂
If you havent got a lathe stick a ball bearing in the dimple on the shaft to self center without mashing the bolt up.
Reminds of trying to undo the bolts holding the rear bumper in place on my XJ8 - the mounts failed first!
You have an XJ8?? what an awesome car!!
@@defender90keswick.nigelsla59 only the 3.2 (V8), but the original engine - still purrs like a kitten
that's freezing in my country!! 😂
Hi Nigel. What dose the Gwyn Lewis kit actually do? I know alot of people do it but ive not looked into what it actually does. Is it something to improve driveability? Its daft that they send you the bolt like that. Its just asking to cause trouble.
Life's Projects hi Tom. Basically the Gwyn Lewis kit gets rid of the swan neck in the drop arm and the swan neck in the drag link. The ball joint in the drop arm wears pretty quickly and is not easy to replace. And.. the kit gives you greaseable ball joints rather than the sealed stock units. I’ll do an unboxing video as soon as the kit arrives and then you’ll see the benefits.
I found the Defender drop arm ball a weak spot and a source for MOT failure. So a number of years ago I decided to fit the Gwyn Lewis kit to my 200 TDI Defender. The kit uses a normal Defender steering ball joint making replacing the ball joint far easier. That said since I fitted the kit I haven't had to replace the joints.
