    I made one of the "three hole" gearbox removing brackets to fit in the top of my high lift jack. It made the job so much easier when replacing Disco clutches.
    On the old series 3 I just slide the box back on the crossmember

    I have exactly the same transfer box adapter plate. Best thing I made for my Defender. "Wiper motors" I added a 140 deg gear to my right hand drive 110. Extra travel on the passenger side is great, but the driver's side goes exactly rubber to rubber. Little scary at first, but i think I like it.

    Hi Mike, great work. I’d seen a drawing of the bracket before but your video & lifting jack/ bracket tool make it easy to see how to get it lined up without bursting a blood vessel in the process.

      Thanks - I saw a picture on Google of the plates and figured they couldn't be that hard to make - and hour or two with the plasma and MIG and I had them made

    Great video Mike sadly I have removed my LT85 gearbox twice in the last 4 weeks as the original gearbox had horrendous bearing noise.
    I then bought one at a show and I was ensured it was GOOD, after fitting I started up and it was worse than the original.
    The gearbox is now away being rebuilt ,I also found a hairline crack in one half of the casing at the bottom allowing oil to drip out.
    Anyway I made a bracket for removing and refitting the box and it works fantastically.
    Not sure if I can attach a picture to you tube anyway it allows me to remove the transfer and gbox in one and it balances perfectly on a single trolley jack thus removing the need for the engine hoist through the door.
    It bolts on to the gearbox mounts once you have removed them and I can remove the gearbox on my own and refit too.
    Thanks for the vid keep it up👍

    I have to work on the flat ( i.e. No lift or pit) and made a transmission jack using a large trolley jack and a transmission cradle, which is supposed to be mounted on a pit jack. Works a treat. I had a local steel fabricatIon shop make up the Adaptor for the LT230 from the drawing in the LR workshop manual. I'm currently putting the finishing touches to my new workshop which will have a pit; no lift for me as I can't go high enough!

    You are a man of many talents!!! Are you boarding the bathroom out or doing it the old traditional way. If you are tiling the wall after plastering it I would recommend dorb and boarding as you don't have to skim it, just stick the tiles on and the job is done. I would rather plaster a wall and tile it than take the main box out of a defender. If I had to do a clutch, I used a high stand and just moved the complete box as far back as I could and work in the gap to replace the clutch. Rather you than me Mike, I,m so happy that I am retired now and all that stuff is behind me. As always, a very good video Mike which I feel encourages owners to do more repairs for themselves. Best wishes from God's county. Rob.

      I hate doing gearbox removals - especially on my own - easy to get out, but sometimes a bugger to get back in! - which is why I take out the high low lever - pretty easy thenMy mate is doing the tiling - putting those big floor tiles on the walls 30cm x 60 cm - looks like marble - bangs em up real quick - if he gets here - likes the pop after work - a 2 day job has been taking 5 weeks so farTiles going strait on the old plaster board so quite easy to do - just all the cutting and his electric cutter went on the fritz Monday so more excuses!
      Just out of interest - we don't have many brick houses here -all wood
      Brick is expensive , wood is almost for nowt, and a brick house is a bugger to heat in winter and if water gets in the brickwork then the ice has a force of 9 tons/sq inch so they crack easy - wood is a bit more flexibleAlso they build nothing to last here - after 50/60 years there may be too much rot in the wood so they put a swing shovel though it and build a new one - cheaper!

      I was really apprehensive to do my own tiling, but I soon got the hang of it. Which is the same as when you do a job on a landrover that you have never done before. What's the worse that can happen, take the tiles off and start again. How many times have you done that with a Landrover repair? that is how we acquire knowledge, of coarse, when someone like you gives people advice it makes it a lot easier, so carry on the good work. I think I would live in a caravan if I was living over there Mike. Best of luck from you know where,,, from you know who.

    Had the 200 tdi in for over 4 years. 2 times new clutch plates 1 time gearbox swap (ashcroft rebuilt)
    Never took the tunnel out neither took the high low shifter off. I could lower it just enough and removed it from underneath on the lift... However you have to seperate the transfercase and gearbox...
    With the 638 I need to take off the high low shifter as I could not tilt this far.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  5 років тому

      The idea of taking off the shift is you don't have to tilt the box back too far - then you are not stressing the rad hoses or the fan hitting the cowl and it is quite quick to put the linkage back on with the tunnel out

      @@BritannicaRestorations Thanks for all these really nice videos!
      Looking to the Manual, the viscous fan would need to be removed, cooling system to be drained and some hoses to be disconnected. Is that still needed if the stick for the transfer box is removed?

    Thank you for your suggestions! In a defender, I need to remove both engine and gearbox, is possible to lift together? Should I separate transfer box before and leave in place? Which approach do you suggest? Thank you

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  4 роки тому

      you can get the whole lot out in one lump if you remove the gear stick and Hi Low shift, plus both gearbox mounts

      Thank you! So i don't need to touch exhaust nor frame? And i should also leave transferbox in place?

    Mike, what angle did you make your transfer box removal tool? I don’t have a jack that can tilt to suit. Looks about 45 degrees? (Still fittering away trying to “safely” get it off)

    Hi thank you for great video. I have removed the front prop shaft to replace with new one. In the mean time I wanted to drive a little without front shaft, but I couldn’t drive. It didn’t move! Is that normal? Thank you.

      You need to engage the diff lock

      @@BritannicaRestorations thank you for your reply. Does this mean I have a problem or not? If I put the shaft on will it work. Again thank you for your help.

      If you engage the diff lock then you should be able to drive on the rear axle

      Indeed!
      This truck was not fitted with a hitch (if you saw the video on this truck rear crossmember attachment you will understand why!)
      But I had nowhere to put the strap on to lift it
