I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety half of my life (28yo here). For a long time I had to put on a fake smile to not cause more worry to my close family and friends. I’ve been getting better tho and nowadays I’m much more in touch with myself, my feelings and the life around me than in my early twenties. Feeling true happiness and expressing it through genuine smile and laughter is everything to me, so I’d rather be wrinkly af when I’m older than not express the feelings I once lost.

Smiling isn’t just a cue for you but for others around you, which is why autism can be so difficult, based on the lack of facial expressions or ability to read them. Children respond to smiles and that is how they learn to read facial expressions. It also works the muscles around your face reducing fluid accumulation. I would also add that many people ignore nutrition (getting enough protein and water particularly) and sunblock in their youth, even now with everything we know, which I would argue might have a greater impact. I smile. Frequently and easily. I’ve only just started to get lines on my forehead and around my eyes at 45, which I chalk up to genetics but have found with a healthier lifestyle have not progressed.

My mom has a deep frown line between her eyes. She always looks mad/worried. I noticed one forming on my own face at 18. I did all of the things I could-AHAs, frownies, and yes-trying to never ever furrow my brow. But even when I could stop myself from frowning during the day, at night I would do it in my sleep!
I finally realized I was just thinking about it too much and got Botox. Now the line is gone and I don’t have to think about it more than 1-2x a year when I get a touch up. Botox helped me to feel less vain in a weird way. Also helped with headaches.

The entire “anti-aging” (no fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, etc) fixation is manufactured by the cosmetic industry to make money. The social belief that physical appearance is linked to worthiness as a person-and therefore you need spend money to confine to beauty standards in order to have worth-is hazardous to us as individuals and how we function as a society. It is a direct part of ableism, racism, classism, and sexism. It is the largest contributing factor for eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and gender dysphoria. It kills people.
The entire point of these beauty standards-including anti-aging-is to reinforce systemic discrimination and generate mass consumption. It’s to make rich people richer and keep poor people poor.
People can do whatever they want with their bodies, but no one is asking themselves why they want to do it. No one wants to acknowledge how easily influenced we are, how little control we have over our own desires. Which is understandable given that’s it’s very distressing to think about. But we’re not going to be free from this without taking the first step of recognising that this what’s happening. No one is immune to propaganda.

When someone overdoes Botox, the lack of facial expression forces you to focus mainly on their eyes. And the only thing you see in their eyes is the fear of aging. I’m not against neurotoxins. I’m not against any anti aging treatments in general. Like James says “do you” My worry is just how far this is going. This post really supports what I’ve thought for a while.

I am 38 but a woman who was 33 thought I was 30. I have gray hair like everyone else, I am overweight, nothing special really but ppl say I look way younger. I am caucasian but was never part of tanning culture and wore sunscreen since birth. I also don’t smoke like at all. I laugh and smile at the drop pf a hat, so I bet wrinkles or no wrinkles is largely based in genetics. 🧬 (I think) along with lifestyle choices. I want to gain weight so bad! It does make a person look younger. I have clients that are in their 80s that look like they're in their 60s and vice versa. And when a person has more weight in their face, it does plump the skin making wrinkles and fine lines less noticeable. I am and always have been real thin so my dream is to gain weight as I age (I'm almost forty and still waiting for my metabolism to slow down like everyone told me it would 10 years ago 😂) and I would look my actual age or younger, that'd make me happy.

Whether you develop wrinkles definitely depends a lot on skin type, which is heavily impacted by genetics. My mom, my half sister on my mom's side, and I all have basically the same face and all look very young. My sister and I look basically the same as we did as teenagers.
Other things also factor into how old you look, such as face shape, how you dress and carry yourself, hair style, etc. Again, my sister, mom and I all have rounder faces with big eyes, which contributes to us looking younger than we are. And my dad and I are both redheads. Redheads tend to not go gray, so though my dad looks very different than he did as a young man, he doesn't look like he's in his late 60s as he still has a full head of strawberry blonde hair.

If anything, his experiment perfectly illustrates that health and beauty do not go hand in hand as most "gurus" are trying to convince us. I am sure he himself believed it until he started reading the comments about his outside appearance online. Tbh I think that wrinkles have been demonized by the beauty industry, so many brands mention having smooth, soft skin when that is something that is dictated by genetics. Related to the woman that wouldn’t smile, I have been told to smile by others way too often and the observation that I don’t smile enough is another way the patriarchy makes women feel like they’re not pretty if they don’t smile. I smile when I’m happy, not because someone else wants me to, but I’ve never heard of anyone deliberately not smiling to minimize wrinkles… until today, that is. And her noting that the nuns would reprimand her to stop smiling explains so much, for anyone to be happy in a religious school is perceived as disrespectful by many old-school nuns and priests. To dislike the happiness of others 😓

I was thinking the same. Im 50 and I look the same age as her. When people say they don’t believe I’m 50, it’s not the compliment it sounds to be - they’re saying that at my age
I should look worse than I do because ageing is a terrible thing to do. I’m delighted to be 50. I’ve outlived my father at this point. And I also look exactly the same age as every single woman on my Facebook that I went to school
With. That’s what a 50 year old looks like. I think possibly the misconceptions come from women our age a couple of decades ago that had done hardcore tanning in the 70s with nothing but baby oil on their face. I bet a 50 year old in 1920 and earlier looked very much as we do now.

Anyway. I look about like this woman, and I smile nd laugh all the time. Part of it is that I got very lucky genetically; my mom also looked in her 30s well into her 50s. I’ve maintained my weight pretty steadily, too (outside of pregnancy of course). But imo the biggest thing was avoiding the sun since my mid-teens, and using sunscreen when I couldn’t.
I’d much rather restrict suntans than stop smiling, and I’d rather smile than maintain a tiny bit of the appearance of youth.

This is similar to why I get Botox! I originally got it for cosmetic reasons -- I went in for a consult about getting a jaw reduction surgery and the guy checked out my masseter muscles and was like "you have a lot of masseter hypertrophy, let's see if Botox gets you close to the look you want without invasive surgery." I still think my jaw is too big, but it helped a lot, and in the process I discovered my constant headaches were from clenching my jaw, so it actually ended up being really therapeutic for me. I get Botox a couple times a year at my dentist now purely for the therapeutic purposes now.

And 40 is a wonderful age to appear! It is still young. What is sad is that she is pushing the idea that not smiling is beneficial to look "younger" as if it's the most important thing when research has shown that being a happy, healthy person is enveloped in socializing and loving the quality relationships in your life. Imagine a world where your inner circle sits around with straight faces all the time!!

Aging is something I hope to achieve. It’s always looked at as something we try to delay as much as possible but it’s inevitable. Tess looks great for her age however she still looks her age, however you can tell she takes care of her skin. I wish society would accept aging as something beautiful because it truly is.

I feel like I'm getting old and cranky but I have the same reaction almost all the time, "it's social media". We look at ourselves on camera and in photos too often now but it's also the unmitigated access we have to influencers. We compare ourselves to others. We have powerful industries pushing messages and creating insecurities... These industries love influencers because they are the best thing that has ever happened to marketing. The rate of depression has risen and that's an indicator of the effects of watching others live their best life. Aging seems like the worst thing because unlike most everything else, we can't control it and we live in a society that worships beauty and affluence. We have been conditioned to see beauty as only synonymous with youth. The progression is easy to see and, from that perspective, I understand why people put themselves in debt to get cosmetic procedures rather than save for a retirement they can't yet imagine, but that too will happen. And when retirement age comes, those who are lucky enough to reach retirement age will show signs of aging because as far as I know there is nothing that can prevent it, not even stopping oneself from emoting. And, let's be honest, that doesn't sound remotely fun. Please give me the laugh lines if it means I loved my life. When I'm at the point where I sit back and reflect, I want to smile.

aging is a gift so many don't get 🧡 we are beautiful at all ages of life, unfortunately there's a rather sinister focus on being forever young, partially in order to sell products. to me, anti-aging products is all snake oil because like, if we are lucky, we are going to age. it is inevitable, but in the hopes of even somewhat reducing the signs of aging, people will shell out thousands over the years, sometimes just within a year! save your money, enjoy your life & the process of it all🥰🥰🥰 🥳🥳🥳

Oh my god I can contribute! I'm diagnosed autistic and it is extremely difficult for me to 'emote', I usually have to manually remember to show my emotions on my face. Even when I physically feel like I'm showing a lot of shock in my eyebrows/forehead or smiling big, it never fully translates to my face as a 'big' expression but instead as toned down so my muscles just don't move as much. Besides the fact I suppose I'll get less wrinkles (which I don't care about particularly), connecting with people is like.. 5x the effort 😅 so not all great

As someone with severe depression the worst thing you can do for your mental health is not smile or laugh, it's literally a bio hack in and of itself to trick your brain into thinking that you're happy when you fake smile. So smile sometimes and laugh at how awkward it looks, pet fur babies and hug bc that's gonna do more for your health than preventing wrinkles will ever do. What's the point of looking great if you feel like a massive sack of misery? Just do both.

Aging and wrinkles have everything to do with genetics & sunscreen, not whether or not you smile. My siblings and I (gen x/elder millennials) are all pretty baby-faced and still eat dinner at night time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ We don’t look wildly younger, it’s usually people saying things like, “you’ll see what I mean when you hit 35/40”(I’m in my early 40’s) or assume I graduated college about 5-10 years later than I did. Although my sister was once told to come back to a store when she turned 18 to get a store credit card. She was 30. 😂

I used to get Botox injections to help with my migraine. It was fantastic. And as a really nice bonus it helped with wrinkles in my forehead and my eyes and eyebrows. The doses are higher when you get Botox for medical purposes. So after 6 years. The injections had made me lose tissue around my eyebrows and hairline. So I can't get them any more. And I am sad about it. The injections helped me so much.

I hate how people downplay this to merely a "choice" (of sorts). Let me explain.
As a child, I tried really hard to teach myself how to silent cry to avoid my dad having an outburst at me. All those hiccups and sinffles gave me away too quickly. So I repressed them A LOT. So so much so, that now in my 20s, I cannot, a single bit, genuinely AT ALL change that! I now just cry as silently as possible, to the point that my own fiancee cannot even detect I am crying RIGHT NEXT TO HIM for literally entire MINUTES! I AM NOT JOKING!
I WISH I could change this about myself so that my fiancee can be there for me and allow him to help me, but I simply cannot, even tought I try to show it more, yet is still so silent.
I feel like once you teach yourself something like this, it becomes so much of a reflex, is really hard to break. Sure, she does specify "vanity" as a reason, but if she grew up not having to hide her smile, I think she wouldn't have went down this road to begin with. I feel like once she started and realized this, I think she just pivoted to making this experience a positive one. She just changed how she played her cards!

I can't go around all day with a smile painted across my face. It kills my facial muscles. But I am in no way depressed.

I remember my mom telling me when I was probably 7 or 8 years old to stop raising my eyebrows because it would give me wrinkles. Here I am, 40 years old, without a wrinkle to be found 😂 But also, I'm 40 years old, so I've definitely aged. Skin texture changes, although mine is still *pretty* good, and things definitely start to sag. But I was also that weird teenage girl in the late 90s/early 2000s who was already taking really great care of my skin and wearing sunscreen daily. It's for sure paid off.
I've had Botox in my glabella probably 6 times in the last 4 years, and I love how it makes me look. I'm happy we live in a time where we have so many options if we choose to utilize them!

I kind of understand Tess. About a decade ago, I realised that my parents were aging slightly differently. They were both taking care of themselves and aging well, but my Dad looked a bit older than my Mum. I ended up concluding there were two reasons for that:
    1) Mum wears sunscreen, Dad doesn't. If Dad were white, this would probably have an even greater effect on his appearance.
    2) Dad frowns and moves his forehead a lot, which is why the majority of his wrinkles are on his forehead.
So, nowadays I laugh and smile as much as I like, but I wear sunscreen everywhere and try to avoid moving my forehead. I have some fine lines on my forehead, and some fine laugh lines, but otherwise I don't look my age.

One of the most important things many people fail to mention when it comes to aging is … genetics!!! It’s a roll of the dice. Some get luckier than others. How one takes care of themselves inside and out can make a difference too. I couldn’t imagine not smiling to avoid wrinkles:/ I’m 44 now, I just started using retinol 2 years ago. It helps but I don’t notice dramatic difference. Try not to stress to much that’ll age u quick and being in the sun for too long and no sunscreen.

I just did stem cell therapy from umbilical cord blood yesterday. It can only cause cancer from older blood stem cells retrieval such as from bone marrow or from fat cells etc from children or adults, however it is widely known that stem cells from cord or umbilical cord does not cause cancer or expand on cancer living already in your body, but the opposite where the cancers and tumors actually starts to dissipates. This is exactly the same topic I had yesterday, why the blueprint guy looks like he is embalmed is cause I don’t think his therapies and procedures are doing age reversal for his physical looks as we all expect it to, due to him starting his blueprint later in life rather than when he if was younger. I personally think, that as stem cell therapy becomes more affordable and the knowledge of the spectrum of just how the cells can be expanded within our bodies and the benefits along with it, people will start these stem cell therapies when they are younger as they will slow down Aging with their looks along with all the amazing regenation and anti-aging benefits within the entire body as a whole- it’s like prevention is better than a cure type of therapy. Trust me, if you actually research stem cells further and it’s amazing regenerative benefits not only on our looks but our organs, joints, etc I would suggest you research more about this topic and give a better in depth pov
