Most of those extremely white teeth (like Simon Cowell) aren't even from whitening - they're veneers. So, even if you do want glow-in-the-dark teeth, you still won't get teeth that white with whitening treatments.
Everyone's teeth are different colors. Some people's teeth can get that white. I've done 100's of teeth bleaching sessions. As the person doing to a pt.
As an american, I half destroyed my teeth with at home whitening strips. I had to get dental implants this year for the low low price of what you can buy a brand new vehicle for.
Even with insurance it's insanely expensive . When I had really good dental insurance and needed a few gum grafts due to receding gum line from autoimmune issues the cost was 800 per tooth WITH insurance coverage. It would have been something like 2000 per tooth without insurance
@@نجمة-ت8د probably so, with the addition of already having teeth that would fail within a year or so of any dental work. I would get them fixed and refixed until it just had to go.
@@amandahahn-davidson511 I had to get jaw surgery and dental refused to pay because it was a "health issue" but health refused to pay because it was a "dental issue." 🙃 insurance is a scam.
Exactly I feel we do know these things We try to cut costs But if teeth whiting as we always know should be done by a dentist Why do we choose to by pass It’s not life threatening to not get teeth whitening Consumers need to be more responsible
My dentist recommended an OTC whitening strips (6% peroxide). Because the one in the office is way too strong for my teeth sensitivity (40%). Instead of 30~45min in office, it will take 20+days to whiten them. BUT people don't read instructions. You're supposed to use it max 2 boxes a year, spaced six months. It's not to be used on unhealthy teeth etc... Plus we cannot know different effects of things on you (allergies etc...). But whitening strips work. Hydrogen peroxide=teeth whitening. Don't buy hydrogen peroxide to swish in your mouth, that's the lemon juice equivalent.
@@nicolerose7639 it is! 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide is safe and will work to whiten your teeth. It will take a long time because it's 3%. But not all hydrogen peroxide out there is food grade, therefore, won't necessarily be safe to use in your mouth (will burn your tongue, turn it black). Since it's a mistake you can easily do, to stay safe, I won't personally swish hydrogen peroxide in my mouth. I know some people do.
@@nyphirawe don’t know people and what is accessible to them. Some people have been gaslit by people in medicine and could be hesitant, or told it’s not a big deal etc until it gets so bad that what’s done is done.
I used to work for a dental company and all i can think about when i see those ridiculously white teeth is this one dentist who would tell people not to get pure white veneers because "do you want to look like a fridge?" and he was so right
I always thought overly white teeth were very unsettling. Almost not human lol. You can tell when your teeth are naturally yellow versus not brushing them at all yellow.
Literally should not be an option to get *actual* white veneers haha. If you use one of those colour charts for teeth, super clean healthy white teeth are still technically a slight yellow tint compared to pure white. Genuinely can not understand how ANYONE can handle having those horrible white-blue veneers 🤢
As a person that has developed sensitive teeth through pregnancies, sensodine whitening toothpaste has been a game changer. My dentist did say I could use whitening strips once in a while while using regular sensodine toothpaste but whitening is more of a pain and I'm too lazy, so the whitening paste is perfect
My dental hygienist suggested to put sensodyne on my teeth for 30 minutes before bleaching. Just let the paste sit on the teeth, then rinse. Not a super pleasant 30 minutes but it works. Reduced my post bleaching sensitivity so much.
OMG!! I never thought of pregnancy causing it! My 2nd baby is 17 months old (my first is 10 years old, a decade apart lol ) but I have really noticed teeth sensitivity after this one!!!
I love that these videos aren't just an "oh my god look how dumb these people are, why would anybody do that" kind of thing, but instead bring in your personal experience, like saying "I was obsessed with this" or "I used to use these". You bring such a good perspective by balancing the actual science behind what's happening & why it's dangerous with the real experiences and expectations these people had and how traumatic it must have been for them when things went wrong.
This is why I love James, he never judges people who just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time or decided to make their own choice for themselves and still keeps the videos entertaining (when people aren't being disfigured 😭😭). The human aspect is still so important to consider in these kinds of things
As a dental hygienist I'm not sure I can make it through this video without scrolling through the comments and trying to correct misinformation people have about oral health.
@@marianacardoso736 I heard the whitening kits with LEDS don't do anything and are a waste of money. Not a dentist so can't say for sure, but they do honestly seem really gimmicky.
I love my teeth whitening kit it's the best ever and works like a charm especially considering the fact I have a genetic mouth condition that has all my teeth rotting out of my head ( a classic aboriginal trait) and I get called a drug addict alot and yet have never touched drugs in my life and I have perfect dental hygiene and they still rot and fall out of my head but since I used them my rotting has stopped and there now white as snow and no one says boo to me anymore about my teeth
I think something we all need to keep in mind about tooth color is that the bright paper white look isn't natural looking, and is often the result of veneers. When I see blindingly white teeth I tend to assume they're probably not the person's natural teeth. That said, I do think that most often artificial teeth actually are made with a slight natural yellow tinge for this very reason. I've found that these whitening strips can make my enamel a bit transparent and the jagged dentin underneath shows through...not a good look! And they also make my teeth more sensitive. I've come to the conclusion that I can keep my teeth "white enough" by brushing twice a day with a gentle whitening toothpaste to keep stains under control.
yeah there is a vast array of tooth shades that dental crowns, implants, and etc can come in. dentists will do their best to match those to the color of the surrounding natural teeth because otherwise they'll look very obviously fake.
Yeah, really white teeth actually creep me out, cuz they look like creepy doll teeth. I prefer the natural color of my teeth and if I see any type of yellowing, that just means I’ve been neglecting that area, and just need to make sure I brush that area better. I think any natural shade looks great, as long as it’s one cohesive shade, and I find that’s achievable for everyone as long as they brush properly
I've heard from the bentist to not use whitening toothpaste because it's actually an abrasive. I've switched to kids toothpaste after using crest whitening toothpaste for 9 years
I kind of want to imagine that the people in the UK have a special dealer for Crest strips that they get off the "black market", almost like a drug deal.
Teeth whitening strips are restricted in the UK because whitening ultimately damages your teeth. In the US, the FDA doesn't give a toot and approves all kinds of crazy crap.
@@notevenlistening6072 Not related, but I recently found out about a biologic medication that's been approved for chronic hives. One of the possible side effects is chronic hives.
Because in America it depends on how strong your lobby is. If you throw enough money at the US Congress you can get ANYTHING approved or banned. Fun Fact: Americans may have better looking teeth but British people actually have healthier teeth.
@@RochelleLangI thought it was the exact opposite. I always heard the British have poor dental hygiene. The majority of British people I’ve seen seem to have problems with their teeth. Who knows
I’ve always heard that peroxide in whitening treatments are safe. I’ve personally never had any oral problems from whitening my teeth. And I don’t have too many issues at the dentist either
i'm fairly sure tooth sensitivity is the effect of damage to your teeth, making them more porous. given that my teeth are already at risk from bruxism, i stay away from any whitening, even done by a professional. my teeth are yellow but in 50 years that will be a sign to potential dates that they're all originals. playing the long game 😎
from what i've researched the hydrogen peroxide breaks down the "plugs" in your enamel allowing it to internally bleach your tooth. When you then use a toothpaste with fluoride in it, the fluoride remineralizes the plugs and there is no damage done. whitening strips like crest are extremely safe even when compared to whitening toothpastes that are abrasive and can cause more harm to your teeth than whitening strips can.
Probably 15 years ago, I tried a “One Day” teeth whitening kit sold here in the US. I had used Crest Strips in the past with some sensitivity, but my teeth never improved that much. This kit was sold by a popular toothpaste brand, but I don’t remember which one (maybe Aqua Fresh.) You put the gel on for 30 minutes, took a break for 10 minutes, then repeated for a total of 4 treatments with the gel in one day. I can’t believe I was stupid enough to do that to my poor gums. I got blisters and ulcers all over my gums and inside my mouth. It was so painful! It took a week before I could brush my teeth. I could barely even eat. All that and I don’t even think my teeth looked much better when it was over. I’ll just stick to whitening toothpaste from now on.
Several years ago, I felt my teeth were a little yellow and I bought the Crest strips. When I did so, I was not aware that a childhood accident, where my tooth was almost knocked out, had caused permanent nerve damage to this front tooth. The whitening strips whitened the surrounding teeth, but left the damaged tooth yellow, which made that tooth more obvious. 😩 A dentist told me recently that a root canal from a specialist is my only option to fix this color discrepancy. So, keep that in mind if you decide to use them. They might not work on all of your teeth.
@@WafflePancakes1314 fair question. Perhaps I should have just said damage, instead of nerve damage. Or maybe root damage. I don’t know the exact mechanics of it. I was told the tooth is slowly dying. The back of it, the part my tongue touches, is beginning to appear gray. Because the discoloration is coming from the inside of the tooth, to whiten it, I’d have to whiten it from the inside.
@@WafflePancakes1314because the color comes from the inside of a damaged tooth, where whitening opens the pores on your teeth to whiten the outside part.
There is never any other case where we leave a dead body part in our body. Root canals can cause a lot of health problems because there is always bacteria left no matter how much they clean it. Be careful.
I use whitening strips once every couple of months due to the sensitivity. You usually see a major difference after the first use (with crest strips) so there’s no need use them so often. Also if you drink staining drinks (tea, cola, wine, coffee), make sure you rinse your mouth with water right away to prevent staining!
About people buying 3% hydrogen peroxide and using it as a mouthwash - it’s pretty normal (not common, but not crazy either) here in the US for people to use straight 3% peroxide as a second brush or mouthwash. My dentist literally recommended I use it as a second brush over my molars a few times a week to reduce/prevent the cavities that always grow in my deep pits. I have sensitive gums and have never gotten burns or irritation from it 🤷🏻
I was thinking the same thing. I feel like every American has 3% hydrogen peroxide in the cabinet to use on their teeth for any issue or as a mouth wash. This video really made me think that maybe that's not so great 😂
@@sunbeam3658 yeah I remembered after I commented that at my local Walmart the peroxide bottles are literally right next to the dental care, not next to first aid stuff. That should tell you something lol
Have rinsed with Listerine daily but peroxide as occasional upkeep. They each have different strengths to keep the mouth healthy.... middle age American that's always done this. Well I used act instead of Listerine as a child
As an America, Teeth whitening strips are great if you read instructions and do them correctly! I was using them 3 times a week till I saw noticible differences. Now I use them once a week or once every 2 weeks. Just went to the dentist she said my teeth were great and my gums were very healthy. Just dont over do it folks.
Never a miss with this man, I mean 10/10 always. So thoughtful and never boring. Never releases a video just to release something. We all love an appreciate your ability to create content ❤. In the spirit of being thankful, James, you’re on that list 🫶🥹
i think the issue is the UK not allowing crest whitening strips in the first place. people are gonna want whiter teeth and will find ways to get them whether it’s “legal” or not. if the UK would allow crest products it would give them the ability to properly regulate the products most people are using and reduce the amount of people using dangerous products.
I use hydration peroxide as my mouth wash once a week. But you need to dilute it 50/50. If you read the directions on the peroxide it does say its a oral debriding agent. It helps to remove phlegm, mucus and helps with oral mouth sores. I use it when I get a sore throat. Just be smart about using any product. Read the directions and stay safe. One love ✌🏼❤ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🖤
you CAN rinse your mouth with the usual 1% hydrogen peroxide you can buy at the pharmacy in the US if you have a lesion or cut inside your mouth that you’re concerned has gotten debris in it, but you definitely shouldn’t do it frequently enough to whiten your teeth
I have always used 1% hydrogen peroxide diluted in water as a post brushing/flossing rinse because my teeth are very close together. It's probably safer than the chemically concocted commercial alcohol ridden things they sell in the supermarket!
Love and karlov- this poster is not disputing using diluted hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash substitute. The confusion is happening, I think, because the US sells Hydrogen Peroxide at 1% strength in the bottle. So 1% seems like “full strength” to us. That is too strong to use every day, but can be used at the “full strength” concentration if you need to irrigate a wound in your mouth. If you’re going to use it every time you brush, that’s when you need to dilute it even further so as not to cause damage to your teeth.
Be very careful with that. A lot of dermatologists and doctors oppose using hydrogen peroxide on wounds because it can also attack healthy tissue. They recommend using plain water or a soap and water combo to clean wounds
@@LoveratLovesDoctors and derms actually advise against using hydrogen peroxide for treatments because of how it can cause harm to healthy tissue! I only use hydrogen peroxide in my house when doing laundry for stains. I can smell a bit of "anti-science" so I want to remind you that everything is a chemical, even water.
If its just a fear of misuse, I feel like cheap & accessible telehealth and higher max prescription percentage can prevent people from really doing damage to their and other's teeth by pursuing shady methods. That would be so much better.
that's why the white teeth look so bad, they're not supposed to be brighter than your eyes, it's weird af. it looks whiter than white cause in our minds the eye whites are white (I know they aren't really)
I have extremely sensitive teeth and gums and been wanting to whiten my teeth for years but my dentist wouldn't do it.. And at first I was kinda annoyed but after reading about about it a little, I'm so grateful my doctor cares more about my teeth the his wallet... Also I have "soft teeth" they aren't actually soft 🤣
in the US, 3% hydrogen peroxide is actually a totally normal mouthwash! the bottle indicates its usage as an oral debriding agent. my dentist told me to put it in my waterpik for flossing, and that it can totally be used as mouthwash (just dont swallow)
I rinse with 50/50 diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide after brushing, and it honestly has really helped with canker sores as well as helped my mouth feel overall cleaner, as it does help get to bacteria in difficult to reach places. But yes, don't swallow it!
I was a dental assistant when I was active duty, what we reccomended was Opalescence products (they have a nice toothpaste and whitening gel to use with bleaching trays) or crest white strips w/ sensodyne. Some people would ask about charcoal, but the hygenists I talked to always advised against it and one told me that she would be picking pieces of this charcoal out if people's gums. There are also veneers. However, a lot of tooth structure is taken off and what's put on is like a fake nail. But if anything happens to them or they chip, then they need to be fixed and eventually replaced - thats A LOT of money. With whitening there will more than likely be sensitivity, and if you aren't careful with strips then it can bleach your gums which causes a lot of pain. But things like sensodyne help a lot. (Some things have prob changed in that field. I haven't been a dental assistanr in a couple of years lol).
I’m American and I’ve used the sensitive crest whitening strips every couple of years since I was a teenager. I’ve never had a problem, if you use them as prescribed they are totally safe.
I also use the sensitive ones and I love them! I usually do them once per day for 2-3 days if my teeth are looking *really* dull (like if I’ve been drinking a lot of coffee or red wine), then 1x/week or every other week. One package lasts me months, and I always keep some on hand. After a few days my teeth will get sensitive, but I’m always careful to avoid sticking the strip to my gums and never leave them on longer than the recommended time.
This must be going on in Australia too. The highest legal amount of hydrogen peroxide in Aus is 6% (the same as the UK), and you can only get you teeth whitened by a dentist. The stupid thing is: going to the dentist isn’t covered by our national health insurance so it’s expensive af
Here in the US we have folks traveling to Mexico and bring back medications - recent study by reputable scientists found an alarming number either did not contain the medication or that it was adulterated with other chemicals.
Yes, I was briefly tempted by the idea of ordering tretinoin online but then I was like, wait… There’s nothing in place here to ensure that I actually get something more than a tube of face cream 🤔
When I was younger, I was OBBSESSED with whitening my teeth. I'm 30 now and my teeth look fine but they are in a VERY bad state. I regret it like crazy. 😢
I occasionally use Spotlight whitening strips. They don't really whiten my teeth, because they're fairly white anyway. They definitely brighten them though. I also bought the Hismile purple product which did nothing whatsoever for me. And yes, I've used the 3% HP too. Once only. Because I realised what a fool i was being. Please only do any whitening with the supervision of your dentist.
I feel like using a whitening toothpaste for a couple weeks is so much safer. I actually use Colgate Optic White Pro Series- it's 5% hydrogen peroxide & more than enough to make my teeth naturally white (not fake looking). I switch between that and Sensodyne Pronamel gentle whitening.
I worked at a dental office. Another reason those strips are bad is because people are not warned that their fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures will not whiten. Only your natural teeth whiten. If you have a filling anywhere on the front of your teeth the color of that filling will not changed but the color of your natural teeth will whiten so it will look very strange. We had clients who would whiten their teeth in office and as is recommended, wait two weeks until the whitening settles down beforre redoing their fillings to match their teeth. It's brutal. I had one patient who had bonding and bonding does not whiten so we had to replace ALL her bonding with brighter white composite. That was around 3k for that amount of work.
American here- I use white strips a couple of times a year but never at the "dosage" recommend. If it says daily I use them maybe every third day. I've used the 1 hour express whitening & definitely experienced sensitivity. I have fairly white teeth which I attribute to good genes & I regularly rinse with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Half ounce of 3% peroxide to half ounce of water, swish for a minute, & then brush normally. This helps get rid of a sore throat & prevents ear infections (in my opinion) (not a medical professional).
You guys do have to understand that whitening your teeth is actually bleaching your teeth. Bones are generally going to be a little yellow or beige, but diets and genetics impact the body immensely. I've used a whitening strip and it hurt really badly to where I never did that again, and my friends who didn't have sensitive teeth also were in pain to where the entire jaw structures were in immense pain. And we all did it short term. So yeah have fun with lesser bone density ;)
Even with severe osteoporosis, depleted bone density doesn't affect your teeth. It can affect your jaw bone and it will let go of your tooth like it did with my mother, but the teeth themselves don't lose density. Witening your teeth may affect the enamel, but it won't do anything to the density of the bone.
Thank you for talking sense into me. I’m convinced now this is why my gums are enflamed in this era. I have receding gums and definitely sensitivity so I use Sensodyne toothpaste to help with that. I was an idiot and bought some whitening pens from Amazon. I’m cringing now at the thought. I had planned to try them again now during Thanksgiving break, but I’m definitely going to take some photos of the product and leave a one star review and throw them away. I’m an idiot for buying something where I can’t see exact percentages of ingredients. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
don't be so hard on yourself, we all make mistakes and it's human nature to expect that third party sellers aren't going to put your health at risk to make some money. the important thing is that you realised there's an issue and won't use them again, that you're safe, and that you'll keep an eye out for things like this to stop something similar happening in the future. I'm sorry this happened to you but glad you're binning the product so it can't do any more harm ❤
My mom used to be self-conscious about her teeth, despite having impeccable dental hygiene, up until a dentist realized it and sat her down to tell her that teeth aren't supposed to be white. Teeth are bone. They have a slight yellow tint. It doesn't mean you're dirty, it means you have human teeth.
I had to go to the dentist first for relief treatment bc I used a tooth whitening kit from Walmart. Had sensitivity for an entire week. They told me my teeth were literally perfect from my previous braces and I didn’t need to whiten them. Just went back a month later cuz that bleaching agent ate away at a filling I had and was EATING MY NERVE… had to get a flush and new filling. Still having issues, the first filling was 500. I don’t even want to think about how expensive it’s about to get. Don’t whiten ur teeth and if you want to PLS CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL
I once accidentally used a 40% peroxide. My brother bought it online and neither of us realized that carbomide and hydrogen are similar. I felt intense burning within 30 seconds of putting the paste on. I have always wanted turkey teeth but I won’t put my teeth in danger for my looks.
I used to live next door to the Hargreaves 20-30 years ago. The dad John went by his middle name Barry (at least to us) and Jean is his wife. I don't remember their son. They had a lovely black spaniel called Molly, and my mum and Jean would regularly have chats over the garden fence. When they moved out (presumably into a bigger house!) they kept the house and rented it out. One day (about 10 years ago) our doorbell rang, it was bailiffs looking for Jean and Barry but there was no answer next door. We told them what we knew, which wasn't much, but it was the first we'd heard of any trouble. We later heard the news. Unfortunately nothing else happened - it was a bit of excitement - and they later sold the house to the couple renting it. Jean and Barry seemed like such a sweet couple, we had no idea!
I've been using Crest 3D white strips for a while now. I think alot of people just don't know how to use them which leads to alot of problems. My own teeth can get a little sensitive after use, but it goes away and that's the only problem I've ever experienced.
my teeth is responding to the colgate whitening pen and i’m happy with this. it doesn’t make my insanely sensitive (like me) teeth hurt and i’m okay with slow progress. this shady practices are crazy
I’m so cautious about things like this. If it’s going on my skin, in my mouth, or on/in/around my eyes, I’m only buying it from a reputable store (grocery stores etc), directly from the brand’s website, or from the brand’s official Amazon storefront. No way I’m taking these risks, I’m terrified of getting scammed like this
Okay so the Burst brand whitening strips is my FAV (also love their toothbrush). I looked & they’re only 6% hydrogen peroxide. Whatever formulation they have is AMAZING & I’m happy to know it’s a little lower lol
American here. I use whitening strips every once in a while. I have gaps in my teeth so it’s very easy to avoid overlap but I never leave them on for the full 30 minutes. I wear mine for 10 and get rid of them. If not the sensitivity is terrible.
I don't have sensitive teeth because as a child my daddy & I would chew our ice cream or bite off our Cream Cicles! What I didn't know was my father had false teeth, losing his in the Korean War when a mortar went off & shattered his. I think I was like in my 30's when I found out!! Sadly I got my mother's poor teeth & am sitting here with no top teeth (they crumbled) waiting for the gums to heal so I can get my implants! No Thanksgiving dinner for me this year 😭 😭Just soft mashed & sweet potatoes with some nice dressing/stuffing...
My Christmas is gonna be spent that way since I'm getting my wisdom teeth [& the remainder of a broken molar] removed on Friday! I hope your dental implants improve your life. It sucks to be gifted w/ trash genetics & crumbly teeth, but at least medicine is advanced enough to give you a stronger set!! 💕
As soon as you said "we're not allowed the same whitening strips they have in the US", I'm thinking, 'oh no, what toxic shit are we allowing in the US this time?' There's so much toxic shit in our snack foods, cosmetics, etc that's hugely irresponsible and all corporate greed driven. Corporate "donations" to gov leaders are the only reason some of the stuff isn't banned yet.
Or sometimes even just rescheduling meetings with the FDA that conflict with the other side’s schedule so it gets approved 🤷🏻♀️ the podcast Maintenance Phase talks about this a lot, especially with different diet pills.
I'm so sick of north american actors having such perfect teeth. Its always such a relief to see uk dramas and other public media with like normal looking people who a normal person would actually have the potential to look like. The artificial look is so old and over.
My brother is an actor and when he was in his 20's and went over to LA to do pilot season his American agent kept telling him he "had" to have a Hollywood smile or nobody would hire him. He resisted thankfully and has no issues re being on tv in the uk.
What makes all of this so strange is that teeth aren't supposed to be crazy white. I got to keep my wisdom teeth after they were removed and they were white but slightly brownish-yellow. They looked like regular teeth even though they had never erupted from my gums.
I mentioned this video to my husband the other night. Turns out he had an accident involving industrial-strength hydrogen peroxide when he was 18, so I got some very good insight into the damage that it can do. 😬 Of course that was a much higher percentage than what's being discussed here, but in this case you've potentially got a really long exposure time - and internal exposure at that rather than just on the surface of the skin. Scary stuff. It does seem clear that banning consumer teeth whitening products is not the right answer since now you've got this black market of counterfeit products filling the void. Legalize and regulate is pretty much the mantra of all kinds of harm reduction, and this is no exception.
I had started using whitening strips briefly recently. Only to be told by my dentist to stop cause receding gum lines run in my family 😭 so no whitening products for me at all. Guess I'm stuck with the coffee stains loll
The US seems to have way too relaxed regulation on many medical fields. I'm glad to live in the EU and have its and my home country's tighter regulations and safer products and procedures.
Hi James :) I’m a dental assistant in Canada and I just want to say that teeth whitening is safe WHEN the patient has good oral hygiene. We wont do any whitening if there’s advanced caries or parodontal disease. Hydrogen peroxide will burn the soft tissues when not used properly. I will ALWAYS recommend to consult a dentist before doing ANY whitening treatment.
It's funny how they're extremely regulated and frowned upon in the UK yet smoking is so popular and normal there.. like where are the actual priorities lol. Also I always preferred my natural off-white teeth, but I used to do the hydrogen peroxide (always have it at home) on a cotton swab every once and a while in my younger days. Worked nicely!
i feel like you’re overstating how common smoking is in the uk. not to say that it isn’t fairly common but also it’s much less common than in a lot of continental europe. only around 12.9% (according to the office of national statistics, 2021) of the population smoke, compared to an estimated 11.5% in the usa (according to the cdc, 2022), so not really a significant difference between the usa and the uk in regards to smoking.
Another great video James. I suffer from really sensitive teeth so I’ve never tried these products but I’ve really wanted to. Now I’m kinda glad I didn’t lol
I used Crest whitestrips once when I was 15, preparing for a school dance or something. It wasn't the strongest formulation but the pain was MEMORABLE... Definitely preferable for me to come to terms w/ having off-white teeth, lol. I have a bit of staining from coffee, but usually, rinsing/chewing gum after I drink it & brushing regularly has mitigated the worst of it. I'm so wary of ANY BREED of "quick fix"... Financial schemes, diets, teeth whitening, etc.
I used the crest brand strips from a good retailer in the US. Unfortunately I have an autoimmune disease and after one use of the normal strips my gums reacted terribly. I can't even have my teeth whitened at a dentist without the same reaction. All I can say is brush your teeth regularly and try not fo feel so bad about the color of your teeth if you have an underlying condition. In my experiece in customer service, no one really cares about your teeth as long as you're smiling like you're happy to see them.
As a 14 y/o I didn't listen to the 2-3 hour instruction and fell asleep with some of the crest strips on for 9 hours+. Woke up with the whitest teeth I had ever seen, they actually looked like veneers. But it was so painful even biting a damn potato felt like that pain you get from biting tin foil but constant. Never used those again, luckily my teeth returned to normal after awhile but I guess I'm lucky that this didn't happen!!
I've used medical grade peroxide (3% dilited 1:1 with water) as a mouthwash once a week since I was young. It is listed in the description on the bottle that you can use it that way. I definitely wouldn't buy peroxide in a clear container, it's not safe to be stored that way.
The law in the UK needs looking at, if you can't afford £200 for dentist whitening, you can't afford (guessing) £800 for a return flight to the US. Basically teeth whitening strips in the UK are a total con and waste of time and money, they do less than some toothpastes
Lmao teeth are not bones, wtf?? They are enamel, dentin and cementum, along with the internal workings of the tooth that is an amalgamation of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues.
So when i was a teenager, i fainted face first into the ground, and i dented and scarred my jaw, and when i landed apparently i had a mouth full of rocks, and i now have scarring on my front tooth. It yellows so easily and its not possible for them to fix the scar cuz its so deep into the tooth, and im SO self conscious about it. Whenever i take a video, i cover my mouth when it shows cuz im so self conscious about it. I have tried so many different things to fix it but nothing helps, and now im definitely gonna stop trying whitening products 😳
the h2o2 in teeth whitening strips and the h2o2 in hair bleach/developer are the same thing. if you want lighter hair with less damage, you shouldnt bleach it too often and shouldnt use a super high volume developer - the same goes with teeth. its honestly not that damaging to swish your mouth with hydrogen peroxide as long as you keep the concentration below 5% and dont do it more than once a week. i prefer using h2o2 washes over whitening strips because i know the concentration, and its cheaper!
4:28 YES! If you find it hard to properly brush your teeth or floss due to Joe crooked they are whitening strips aren’t great either. I actually got braces fo fix my crooked teeth mainly for hygiene reasons! Teeth are still crooked a bit however the major obstacles for hygiene are GONE and they look natural
1.I always thought that my teeth weren't white at all, but my dentist actually said they're quite white(which is amazing considering I've never used any whitening products). 2.Where I live they sell incredibly abrasive toothpastes and alot of ppl use these constantly, and they're legal! It'd be better to use something like Crest RARELY and get actualresults than to use abrasive crap that doesnt really whiten but just destroys your enamel..
I used the abrasive stuff for years before I was told how damaging they are. now I've switched to kids toothpaste. I figure that's got to be safer on the teeth
Repo! The Genetic Opera was spot on with the line "For every market a sub-market grows" Make it illegal and watch back-alley products and their affiliated issues crop up like weeds
Super strange, you and Robert's content haven't been popping up in my algorithm lately. 😢 both separately and your combined channel. Good news, I have a ton of videos I missed to catch up on!
I grew up rinsing my mouth with peroxide! Definitely an American thing. I had to stop using mouth wash in general because my teeth became so sensitive.
maybe this is a bit of a side tangent but to me this whole thing is giving "legalize weed to make it safer" which is something i agree with actually. it's that thing where by making those teeth whitening products unobtainable in the UK it creates a black market of offbrand products that are objectively much worse than anything the real stuff could do to you. tldr; if it's illegal you cannot control the quality which means more people get hurt in the long run.
I wanted to share my experience using a DTC whitening gel brand here in the US. I'm a smoker and while my teeth aren't super yellow theyre also not the brightest ever, and I don't want paper white teeth necessarily but was looking to get them to a level where I wouldn't have to be self-conscious in public about their color (theyre naturally a bit crooked so I already had some insecurity about the look of my teeth). I figured a over the counter brand wouldn't go crazy w the lvl of active ingredient in them and they advertised as being good for people with sensitive teeth so I went for it and chose their avg strength gel. This kit came with gel you put in a tray and bit on while using a LED light to activate it. The first time I used it things went great, I was wary so I only had it in for the minimum recommended amount of time which was 5 minutes and I saw instant results, my teeth were 1-1.5 shades whiter than before. So I used them again the next day at the max recommended amount of time which was 15 minutes. That was such a mistake. My gums were raw and I could see where it had blistered and receded from my teeth. It was sore and I couldn't eat without pain for like 4 days. My teeth were super bright but at what cost? Also since I've had dental work done the natural enamel and places where the dentists had patched took to the peroxide differently so not only were my gums messed up but the whitening was patchy. And this was when using the product within their recommended guidelines. So, as a cautionary tale for fellow ppl looking to whiten their teeth at home, really ease into it and do your research about percentages and it'll spare you the pain and frustration
There’s a supply issue with 3% hydrogen peroxide currently. I used to buy in Boots (always got funny looks when I asked for it as it’s kept behind the counter), but it’s not been available anywhere for the last 6+ months. My dentist in the US recommended it and it’s used widely. My UK dentist always tells me it’s “not recommended”. I find it’s honestly one of the best cheapest and easiest ways to whiten teeth at home. Once fell asleep with crest strips on and had sensitivity for weeks (definitely need to follow instructions!). Have used a brand name whitening pen and it turned my teeth green, now I just use oral b whitening toothpaste and that’s good enough
Everyone has a base level of tooth color. Whitening can only get your teeth to that. As others have said, if you want them super white you’ll need caps or veneers.
I used crest whitening strips and I think it burned part of my gum. The gums on my bottom front teeth looks receded right where the strip made contact with them. Mind you have pretty good dental health and have never had issues either my gums.
You can use regular 3% hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash if you dilute it 2 parts water to 1 part peroxide (1% solution) and don’t swallow it. It’s good during cold season to kill off germs & whitens teeth over time. It’s a lot slower than the high percentage strips, but actually soothes inflammation instead of causing it.
If you use a diluted solution, it’s an antibacterial mouthwash that reduces inflammation by killing off bacteria that cause the inflammation in the first place. When people paint it on their teeth straight from the bottle and leave it there, it’s going to eventually cause irritation. Peroxide is in Colgate’s Peroxyl & Crest’s Clinical mouthwashes & both brands’ whitening mouthwashes, if you prefer commercial preparations. A lot of dental practices post information on how to dilute it to 1% (2 parts water to 1 part 3% Hydrogen Peroxide) Don’t swallow it (or just leave it on your teeth to be eventually swallowed and cause issues) just like you don’t swallow any type of mouthwash, and it’s an effective oral antiseptic and whitens teeth a lot more gently than whitening strips which have a much higher concentration. “A Systematic Review of the Effect of Oral Rinsing with H2O2 on Clinical and Microbiological Parameters Related to Plaque, Gingivitis, and Microbes“ is a study listed on PubMed that says it’s effective, just not as effective against gingivitis as a prescription anti-gingivitis treatment. I use it during cold season when I start to get a sore throat and it’s gone the next day. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7648695/
Most of those extremely white teeth (like Simon Cowell) aren't even from whitening - they're veneers. So, even if you do want glow-in-the-dark teeth, you still won't get teeth that white with whitening treatments.
i almost forgot about those! for celebrities its basically veneers all the way down
Ugh darn it I really wanted glow in the dark blue teeth
Everyone's teeth are different colors. Some people's teeth can get that white. I've done 100's of teeth bleaching sessions. As the person doing to a pt.
I assume any celebrity or influencer that has straight, perfectly white teeth has veneers these days.
Zoom at the dentist's office btw
As an american, I half destroyed my teeth with at home whitening strips. I had to get dental implants this year for the low low price of what you can buy a brand new vehicle for.
Please take insurance policy 🙏 😂
Sounds like you were just being irresponsible
Even with insurance it's insanely expensive . When I had really good dental insurance and needed a few gum grafts due to receding gum line from autoimmune issues the cost was 800 per tooth WITH insurance coverage. It would have been something like 2000 per tooth without insurance
@@نجمة-ت8د probably so, with the addition of already having teeth that would fail within a year or so of any dental work. I would get them fixed and refixed until it just had to go.

I’m a dental nurse, and the DIY and OTC teeth whitening products are the skincare equivalent of putting lemon juice on your skin…
Exactly I feel we do know these things
We try to cut costs
But if teeth whiting as we always know should be done by a dentist
Why do we choose to by pass
It’s not life threatening to not get teeth whitening
Consumers need to be more responsible
Is it not the exact same ingredient used? Thought so really it's all lemon juice
I’ve used the ones for sensitive teeth which have 5.25% peroxide.
Can't believe Jake let it get that bad before he went to the hospital. I can't even imagine the panic he was experiencing

I too got sensitive teeth after pregnancy, but it didn't occur to me it was related. Is there any part of the body that pregnancy doesn't change? 😮💨
My dental hygienist suggested to put sensodyne on my teeth for 30 minutes before bleaching. Just let the paste sit on the teeth, then rinse. Not a super pleasant 30 minutes but it works. Reduced my post bleaching sensitivity so much.
I can vouch for the whitening part! I smoke and drink coffee daily, but my teeth is still white. I love that brand
Have you tried hydroxyapetite toothpaste?
What about those led teeth whitening? You think is safe?

I got some off amazon UK years ago
Probably buy them off some dodgy bloke in the pub 🤣
Gimme some of those trukfit bootleg whitening strips 😂
Teeth whitening strips are restricted in the UK because whitening ultimately damages your teeth. In the US, the FDA doesn't give a toot and approves all kinds of crazy crap.
While at the same time banning Kinder Eggs. Baffling
James I’d love to see a deep dive into the dark side of hair extensions ruining people’s natural hair!! Xx
As an ex-dental nurse, I'm SO HAPPY you mentioned the illegal beauticians teeth whitening services here in the UK. Its a massive issue.
i'm fairly sure tooth sensitivity is the effect of damage to your teeth, making them more porous. given that my teeth are already at risk from bruxism, i stay away from any whitening, even done by a professional. my teeth are yellow but in 50 years that will be a sign to potential dates that they're all originals. playing the long game 😎
from what i've researched the hydrogen peroxide breaks down the "plugs" in your enamel allowing it to internally bleach your tooth. When you then use a toothpaste with fluoride in it, the fluoride remineralizes the plugs and there is no damage done. whitening strips like crest are extremely safe even when compared to whitening toothpastes that are abrasive and can cause more harm to your teeth than whitening strips can.
haha this made me feel better about mine too as a fellow grinder lol
😂
Oof that sounds painful. I can’t imagine how that feeler, or and I’m not sure I want to
Teeth are NOT meant to be pure white, slightly stained teeth are normal
Yeah super white teeth are actually creepy
In America we only allow vivid white teeth inside of the most exclusive destinations.
I assume the USA has a lot of over the counter teeth withening products because dental treatments are insanely expensive.
What does nerve damage have to do with the hydrogen peroxide not lightening the tooth? Legitimate question

A French influencer was recently fined 20k€ for advertising a third party seller that sold Crest in France. I think Crest sued the seller too.
This video really made me think that maybe that's not so great 😂
American here, I do not have that. I have Costco brand Listerine
@@kit922 unfortunately listerine isn’t strong enough to help with my cavities

As an America, Teeth whitening strips are great if you read instructions and do them correctly! I was using them 3 times a week till I saw noticible differences. Now I use them once a week or once every 2 weeks. Just went to the dentist she said my teeth were great and my gums were very healthy. Just dont over do it folks.

i think the issue is the UK not allowing crest whitening strips in the first place. people are gonna want whiter teeth and will find ways to get them whether it’s “legal” or not. if the UK would allow crest products it would give them the ability to properly regulate the products most people are using and reduce the amount of people using dangerous products.
One love ✌🏼❤ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🖤
ya same, here in Canada the first listed use on the hydrogen peroxide bottle is to use as a gargle. My Dr told me to use it when I have strep throat.
Hydrogen peroxide is actually used in dental offices for people who need a deep cleaning.
you CAN rinse your mouth with the usual 1% hydrogen peroxide you can buy at the pharmacy in the US if you have a lesion or cut inside your mouth that you’re concerned has gotten debris in it, but you definitely shouldn’t do it frequently enough to whiten your teeth
I have always used 1% hydrogen peroxide diluted in water as a post brushing/flossing rinse because my teeth are very close together. It's probably safer than the chemically concocted commercial alcohol ridden things they sell in the supermarket!
My dentist actually told me to use hydrogen peroxide diluted with water to rinse my mouth. They told me to not use store bought mouth wash.
That sounds like it would be incredibly helpful
It’s so silly, the reasons given for banning whitening strips in the UK could be applied to hair bleach or even hair dye that are sold at Boots.
What's the bet it's just about money. If they legalised otc whitening strips then people wouldn't have to pay their dentist to do it
That would be far too sensible.
I used to work in a dentist and the rule we went with is your teeth should never, ever be lighter than the white of your eyes
This is very confusing news for someone with allergy ridden eyes.
I can understand that, why would you want your teeth to stand out more than your eyes when people naturally look towards your eyes?
that's why the white teeth look so bad, they're not supposed to be brighter than your eyes, it's weird af. it looks whiter than white cause in our minds the eye whites are white (I know they aren't really)
you have a really soothing voice, i could listen for hours
I have extremely sensitive teeth and gums and been wanting to whiten my teeth for years but my dentist wouldn't do it.. And at first I was kinda annoyed but after reading about about it a little, I'm so grateful my doctor cares more about my teeth the his wallet... Also I have "soft teeth" they aren't actually soft 🤣
Same. My dentist says it will make my teeth even more sensitive than it is and it will be unbearable for me. 😢😢
in the US, 3% hydrogen peroxide is actually a totally normal mouthwash! the bottle indicates its usage as an oral debriding agent. my dentist told me to put it in my waterpik for flossing, and that it can totally be used as mouthwash (just dont swallow)
I rinse with 50/50 diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide after brushing, and it honestly has really helped with canker sores as well as helped my mouth feel overall cleaner, as it does help get to bacteria in difficult to reach places. But yes, don't swallow it!
I use peroxide in my waterpik. I use a small fraction of peroxide
I love how he dives super deep into these topics leaving no details uncovered.
I think a majority of national health insurances don't cover dental work, possibly because of how expensive even the smallest procedures are.
Here in the US we have folks traveling to Mexico and bring back medications - recent study by reputable scientists found an alarming number either did not contain the medication or that it was adulterated with other chemicals.

Love these! They are very informative and I appreciate the work and research you put into them.
Thanks for sharing what you use. My teeth are slightly yellow and it’s been bothering me so I’ll definitely try that toothpaste
Crest legit makes your teeth so sensitive..
You aren't missing much.
Haha mine are only sensitive when I’m using them! After that they’re fine!
I can only use them twice per month. My teeth are sensitive for several days after using them. Not worth the risk.

I agree. I prefer and like my human teeth. I can't help staring at peole with those whiter as white monstrosities.
“ChEsHiRe 👁️👁️” almost made me spit out my coffee 😂
I had to go to the dentist first for relief treatment bc I used a tooth whitening kit from Walmart. Had sensitivity for an entire week. They told me my teeth were literally perfect from my previous braces and I didn’t need to whiten them. Just went back a month later cuz that bleaching agent ate away at a filling I had and was EATING MY NERVE… had to get a flush and new filling. Still having issues, the first filling was 500. I don’t even want to think about how expensive it’s about to get. Don’t whiten ur teeth and if you want to PLS CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL
do u remember what brand was the kit you got?
You had filling that had decay underneath it- teeth whitening does not dissolve dental composite or amalgam.
I don’t usually comment but your videos are so informative and thorough. Delivered articulately and with such a lovely manner. Fantastic work! ❤
I Love these vídeos, they are my favorites. And your facial expressions are just the best. 😂💜
I once accidentally used a 40% peroxide. My brother bought it online and neither of us realized that carbomide and hydrogen are similar. I felt intense burning within 30 seconds of putting the paste on. I have always wanted turkey teeth but I won’t put my teeth in danger for my looks.
That sounds terrifying 😳
This shi overdramatic as hell wtf
Or sometimes even just rescheduling meetings with the FDA that conflict with the other side’s schedule so it gets approved 🤷🏻♀️ the podcast Maintenance Phase talks about this a lot, especially with different diet pills.
I don't think they exist anywhere in Europe, even with us outside of EU. Just dentists can do whitening, and not all do it.
I'm so sick of north american actors having such perfect teeth. Its always such a relief to see uk dramas and other public media with like normal looking people who a normal person would actually have the potential to look like. The artificial look is so old and over.
Yeahhhhh also overly perfect teeth are a little… uncanny valley esk!
I’m rolling my eyes reading this dumb ass whiny comment
My brother is an actor and when he was in his 20's and went over to LA to do pilot season his American agent kept telling him he "had" to have a Hollywood smile or nobody would hire him. He resisted thankfully and has no issues re being on tv in the uk.
love the zooming in while saying "dodgy dealers". i always feel like i'm part of an underground secret watching these :)
I hate these videos because they always end up making me scream, but I also love them because they always end up making me scream
Honestly the US should have tighter rules about whitening strips. They can really do a lot of damage to the gums.
The US seems to have way too relaxed regulation on many medical fields. I'm glad to live in the EU and have its and my home country's tighter regulations and safer products and procedures.
Americans, on the whole, don't need Big Mama to tell them what do do. We in Europe DO -- well, not all of us need to be insanely regulated.
@@rubynibs Lol maybe check how many botched procedures there are per capita in the US versus in European countries.

So interesting to see the difference in what is approved in one country as opposed to another.
I get really bad teeth sensitivity. Every time I go to the dentist it hurts super bad due to the sensitivity from using whitening products.
I got a white glo ad at the start of this video 😂😂😂 let's goooo!
"speaking to the daily mail... a very good resource..👀"
💀💀💀
Hello. Good Afternoon James 💜 Happy Sunday 💜😊
Good eveninnnnggggg ☺️💜💜
@@JamesWelsh Thank You James 💜
Same in Australia. Not a lot of options for strips or toothpastes etc exvept HiSmile as ut was founded in Australia
We don't have Crest at all
I just bought HiSmile today and I should've watched this first! Should I avoid using it?
I've used medical grade peroxide (3% dilited 1:1 with water) as a mouthwash once a week since I was young. It is listed in the description on the bottle that you can use it that way. I definitely wouldn't buy peroxide in a clear container, it's not safe to be stored that way.
The law in the UK needs looking at, if you can't afford £200 for dentist whitening, you can't afford (guessing) £800 for a return flight to the US. Basically teeth whitening strips in the UK are a total con and waste of time and money, they do less than some toothpastes
Yeah I honestly think they’re pretty pointless! That blue toothpaste is even worse 😭
BTW, teeth are bones. Bones are not pure white. They are slightly off-white. Don't worry if your smile isn't perfectly snow-white.
Lmao teeth are not bones, wtf?? They are enamel, dentin and cementum, along with the internal workings of the tooth that is an amalgamation of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues.
I’ve told people this before and for some reason they get well defensive and I don’t understand why lol
Repo! The Genetic Opera was spot on with the line "For every market a sub-market grows"
Make it illegal and watch back-alley products and their affiliated issues crop up like weeds
Ouch, what strength were you using, did you dilute it?
maybe this is a bit of a side tangent but to me this whole thing is giving "legalize weed to make it safer" which is something i agree with actually. it's that thing where by making those teeth whitening products unobtainable in the UK it creates a black market of offbrand products that are objectively much worse than anything the real stuff could do to you.
tldr; if it's illegal you cannot control the quality which means more people get hurt in the long run.
i was just thinking about whitening my teeth but maybe not now 😂
I wanted to share my experience using a DTC whitening gel brand here in the US.
Ahhhh I've been nonstop advertised this product! Clicked immediately. I thought this looks so manufactured to look appealing
I have never used them before. I didn't know these damn whitening strips had all this drama.
35%.... WOAH. That's actually terrifying!!
You're claiming hydrogen peroxide decreases inflammation? What are you basing that information off of
Uhh this sounds dangerous
