  • At the height of his fame - fronting the Libertines, going out with supermodel Kate Moss and being one of Britain's most famous drug addicts - Pete Doherty was emblematic of London's highlife.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
But now the singer has switched the capital for the shores of Margate.
And rather unexpectedly he and The Libertines are opening a hotel.
Before going on tour with his new band, he spoke to Minnie Stephenson.

As someone with experience heroin, and I think, possibly methadone has that effect, I really should have googled this but I heard years back that it tightens the skin, and when you get clean from it for a substantial time your skin will look more like it's age...probably a load of bs

Back in the day, I wasn't really a Libertines fan, but ended up at a secret gig Pete did at the Boogalloo in Highgate. Just him with his guitar and his mate with one snare drum, and about 40 people in the audience. They played for over 3hrs, sat on bar stools, and were absolutely brilliant. I realised that night is misjudged him - I'd read the headlines and thought he was just a hyped-up junkie. I was wrong. Very very talented lad - and such effortless charisma. He won my respect. Good luck to him

When you first see him, his outward appearance is pretty striking. But when you listen to him for a few moments, there’s something so so young and such a youthful energy to him. He has a genuine and pure heart that manifests out. I’m glad he’s doing well.
The world loves to demonize and ridicule addiction, until that person dies. Then it’s “so tragic, how heartbreaking... they were so young, so amazing so talented”. I hope moving forward we become more informed and compassionate. I’m so pleased to see him keep creating and working. Love you Pete.

I’d wager that same kind of polarisation is exactly what makes life so hard to navigate for gentle/sensitive/empathic souls like Pete Doherty. You’re right, authenticity radiates out of him.

Pete is going thru the worse part now when your body is clear of drugs & you have to deal with your emotions which have been lying dormant while your using, very difficult this is when most people start using again as you cry/laugh for no reason, feelings of guilt tear u apart then u have to learn how to live in the real world all over again i'm nearly 60yrs old I used for over 30 yrs I'm just getting my life together now it's really hard, I've done lots of detox's but I done it cold turkey this time felt like I was dying, some days I wished I would die, just wish I'd stayed clean yrs ago when I was younger as it's so much harder the older you get if only we could turn back time , good luck pete take it from an old timer it's not worth it to go backwards again.

Sadly, as with most chronic addicts their brains are left with 'holes' in them. They struggle with sounding comprehensive, they struggle with self-forgiveness. Their teeth are terrible, they age prematurely. I wish addicts, no matter how many friends and family have cut them off, start with self-forgiveness. Addiction is a terrible curse, but it's an illness. Own your behaviour, apologise, but commit to loving yourself no matter what. When you are kind to yourself you'll see how the world falls in line with you. It breaks my heart to see the monster of self-loathing and shame weigh down on a life. Go well Pete.

@@eriklucidor422 I'm so glad to hear someone else is thriving on methadone! I've been clean 5 years - the first year on Subutex and the past 4 years on 100 mg of methadone daily. Methadone has ABSOLUTELY, without a doubt, saved my life. I'm 35 and finally have a proper career, my own home, a new car and better than all that... the respect, love and close relationship of my family. Anyone who sees methadone as "trading one addiction for another," is seeing it in the wrong light. Like the insulin analogy... do people scoff at diabetics and look down on them, referring to them as "insulin addicts?" Years of drug use changes the way your brain functions. That's plain, proven science. Your brain stops producing certain chemicals because it's come to rely on your use of drugs (in my case, opiates) to produce them. If taking methadone is what my brain needs to properly function and allows me to be a productive and responsible member of society, a present and attentive parent, a loving and caring daughter and a reliable and hard working employee, why must there be such stigma associated with it?
I love hearing methadone success stories. Congratulations on your sobriety!!

@@stevechristie2569 oo hard to say off the top of my head but ill name a few. I go to conventions as well and haven't paid to meet anyone but have still bumped into people. Warwick Davis, John Barrowman, Pamela Anderson, saw a panel for the game of thrones cast and met them after, Alyson Hannigan, Hayley Atwell. I also met Geri Halliwell in a park lol. Bradley from s club 7 😂. The list goes on a bit. Pete was just incredibly nice and polite and actually a bit shy.

As someone who has suffered addiction this is heart breaking....the mans a genius and he's managed to hold on to that genius despite being a struggling addict. Jim Morrison lost his mojo to addiction, that's what i think killed him in the end. The day a genius becomes a mere mortal its like superman losing his powers, death comes shortly after. I hope this doesn't happen to Pete. the last true rock and roll star.

I know people have a bad perception of Pete but addicts are helpless doesn’t mean they’re bad people. He’s made music that’s touched peoples lives and think he should have a better opinion about him from others

At 5:00 I would just want to give him a hug. You see he is feeling really emotional about that question.
