    I met Pete once in High Bridge, Newcastle. He was unbelievably charming and showed me a load of ties he’d just bought from a retro shop. I was just a fan saying hello but he seemed to enjoy the fact I wasn’t asking for anything and just being normal. When he said bye, I said “take care Pete” and he gave me the saddest smile and said “I’ll try.”

    “It’s beginning to dawn on me I can’t... basically, I can’t smoke crack anymore.”
    Anyone who’s struggled with dependency/addiction will understand how he felt in that moment. It doesn’t matter if it’s alcohol, heroin, Xanax, insert addictive drug here. Giving up ANY drug you’ve become dependent on feels like you’re losing a piece of the puzzle that is you. To complicate matters (especially early on in recovery), your brain has a knack for remembering the good times rather than the times you were struggling to stay alive.

      He's living in France now, eating loads of cheese on his farm. He's put loads of weight on. I thought it was a wind up when me mam sent me a recent pic of him til I googled it and it was legit. Loads of articles about it. Hopefully he's doing well. As an addict in recovery myself I know being overweight doesn't mean you're not using. It can do, and he probably isn't but other drugs, like benzos and pregabs make you gain weight, and antidepressants do too. I've always liked Pete, so whatever stage of his recovery he's at, I wish him the best. He said he's "mostly clean" whatever that means to him. Maybe he's on methadone. Whatever it takes to enable you to live a safer life is a good thing to me

    When he starts crying after talking about his father, you can tell that they took a break and he went to shoot up heroin. The crook of his arm is covered in blood. Just an example of how people use drugs to regulate emotions, to numb themselves.

      Pete Doherty is a very good songwriter, very poetic lyrics, intelligent guy no doubt. But to say he would have been held in the same regard as Dylan shows that you might not be too familiar with the music scene of the sixties and seventies. That was the time of so many great songwriters, there's a long list. As songwriters all of them lived in Dylans shadow. The best of them, like Paul Simon for example, managed to differentiate themselves and become successful in their own right. John Lennon was never as highly regarded as Bob Dylan as a songwriter. The Beatles wrote great songs together and were probably the most commercially successful band of the era, they then broke up and went solo. Lennon and Harrison were good solo songwriters but they were always in awe of Dylan. In the sixties the Beatles at first were doing simple catchy pop tunes. Lennon brought BDs second album to the group and they had it playing repeatedly at their place. It was that album that inspired them to move away from the pop tunes and to write the more lyrically creative songs on their later records.
      In summary, there are really good songwriters in the modern age despite what some people say. Pete Doherty is one of them and he is lucky to be blessed with good looks also because with each generation that seems to become more important than the actual music, but he would never have been held in the same regard as Dylan as a songwriter.

    i definitely need subtitles. i haven't finished watching cause i intend on looking it up with subtitles.. but up to what i've seen.. that freelance journalist.. she doesn't really seem very intelligent.. i mean okay, she thinks people want to see others fall apart, and it's her opinion that's great, i don't have a problem with that.. but when asked why, she just replies "oh well that comes from a really dark place". seriously? that's your explanation? what does a dark place even mean.. it seems like she doesn't have any kind of argument to support her statement. disappointing.. she is a journalist.. her job is to analyse things.
    so i thought of what she says, this excitement society feels towards these kind of characters.. i personally do not see him as someone who is falling apart, but "society" probably does.. so i tried to find a reason why people would be entertained by watching someone "fall apart".. and i came up with this: i think people are afraid to get out of their comfort zones.. they just do what they're told.. and that is safe.. you just go to school, finish school, go to uni, get a job to get a house, to raise a family, to buy a car, to go on vacations, to die. don't do drugs. don't drink. sleep 7 hours every day. have a nice hair, have a nice skin, eat "healthy" blah blah blah.. there are all these rules we follow so blindly.. so when they see someone escaping that regime, they want to see them "crumble" cause they want to feel reassured that the life they lead is the "correct" one..
    once again i don't see people like pete as someone who's crumbling.. but society does.. or at least they want to, I THINK they desperately want to convince themselves that having this manufactured life is what's good.. they are eating what is being fed to them.. gladly.. because they are too afraid to take the risk of going looking for their own food.

    • @chamoisenses
      @chamoisenses 10 років тому

      You are right. Have you read the book of Lennon's interview 70's Rolling Stones Magazine? Well. John said: When we started the band, and when also started all the " Beatlemania" I remember a lot of times, that we always ask rooms one by one. I did that, because, in the room of our 2 friends ( Derek Taylor and Neil) they had hookers and heroin, cocaine and other things too. At that time, My drug was the amphetamines, alcohol and Marihuana. But they, had always heroin and cocaine and their tables!!! That's a fact! So, Maybe, some people want Pete being doped, to manipulate him, to record disc. Jimi Hendrix was in this chaos too, and also the other artists of that decade. Kurt Cobain said: Every time, 10 years, each one by one, came out, suddenly a really good band. And when we were that band in the 90's, We were chosen to represent the group of this decade. That says to me: The records company, take always advantage with the artist. Rape me, was a song written and dedicated to all the big record company.

    • @ycantijustusemyname
      @ycantijustusemyname 10 років тому +2

      Yeah i think that's definitely very probable.. it'd be so ironic though, wouldn't it? that this people we see as rule breakers and rebels end up being just another set of puppets for the system.. just to entertain us, create obsessions, fandoms, cults, and basically raise more money.. if you think about it, most musicians are so restrained.. like for example: who in their right mind would agree to tour for 10 months straight or even more, playing every night or every two nights??? no matter how much you enjoy it, i don't think anyone would really chose to do that. to not even know what city you are in, getting dragged from place to place, interview to photoshoot.. seriously, are we really going to believe that they need that or else they wouldn't make enough money??? i don't buy it. i don't understand why musicians agree to it either. i don't know..I guess everything's much more complex than it seems..

      Idk, as I read comments that journalist is getting ALOT of hate, maybe rightfully so... but she's not a psychologist, so when she says it comes from "a dark place in the human soul" maybe she doesn't quite know exactly where it comes from? Which is okay, she's allowed to not know. I personally love Pete more than any other artist today, but what she says is true. People did turn up for public executions, there are a ton of death videos online, people buy up tabloids and tabloid trainwrecks like they're going out of style, she's right- people like to see other people fall apart. It makes them feel better about their own lives (my opinion).

    • @ycantijustusemyname
      @ycantijustusemyname 10 років тому +2

      No, i know she's not a psychologist i just thought her explanation was too vague.. you don't need to know for certain.. but you can form a theory, at least explain the reason behind your statement.. that's what bothered me. Also, i wanted to expose "my theory" haha

    Its mad when your an addict, I couldn't trust anyone either but I could trust my dealers !
    Thats what my drug did to me , really struggled like everyone else that got addicted to thid drug , I still bump into people that are still using , some that are into a 25yrs habit and are still alive .

    What folk don't get is that it all relys on the songs. He said so in an old interview. What he lost was the song as he continued. Really the attention from the press killed his graft. All the drama helped the band gain infamy but fucked everything else.

    jesus you've really not understood what she's saying at all have you. she's not saying it's what she wants to see, she's saying thats what the general public want to see and explaining why the media are fixated on him the way they are. what she says is unfortunately very true.

    • @harryjones84
      @harryjones84 3 роки тому

      Why is she smiling as she’s saying it?
      And calling it schadenfreude is pretty reductive if not idiotic...even i. People are obsessed with that life not because they see it as a misfortune...more a mystery or a temptation hence why it is then dressed purely as descent...i
      If all that came from
      Schadenfreude then the victims would garner more press than the murderer...it’s more about doubt and reassurance id say...
      But regardless what she says is clearly not totally objective and it’s all said in a tone of admission...when she’s saying ‘ to the press hes just this...he sells papers makes money...they don’t care about him...they don’t have a personal relationship with him’
      Vis à vis by HER reasoning- she is Both journo and has no personal relationship with him...

    One midweek morning I got stopped by the old bill in SOHO's "piss ally", outside my work. They mistook me for Pete. He'd been shoplifting and ran past me 2 mins earlier. I obviously sent the officers in the opposite direction. I think they still caught poor old Pete, in the end though?
    This "journalist" is effing atrocious , by the way.
