Peter Doherty: "Addicted to Art" / A Portrait Interview about Drugs, Art and his new Life

- The ice bath really opens him up: Peter Doherty jumps into a big tub of ice cubes, three hours before his "Libertines" concert in Edinburgh, and answers me in a 33 minutes long interview very personal questions about his addiction to drugs, the influence of heroine on making art, his relationship to Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse and the change he went through, especially thanks to his wife Katia: She is the one who introduced him to the ice healing! Does he really want to stop using? Well, he seems not to be so sure about it... Anyway there's something more important to him: making art, poetry, music. Peter Doherty is a truely addicted artist. Listen yourself. This interview was made possible through the fantastic support by his manager Jay Stanley, his german art gallery janinebeangallery, his collector Christian Martinez-Schwabbauer and by ARD titel thesen temperamente who sent me for a report to Edinburgh in August 2022. Many thanks also to my editor Rayk Wieland and DoP André Böhm. This is the edit from my own two cameras and presents the full interview with some vibrant shots not only from the "Libertines" concert and the opening of his Berlin art show but - also - of the ice bath.
Who would have thought we would ever watch Pete Doherty doing ice baths and drinking green smoothies..Anyway, well done Pete staying clean!👏🌟
I'll think you'll find those 'smoothies' contain gin and vodka.
Being a alcohic is not clean...he admitted himself hes very sick....
@@missredumbrella Well, if You're an alcoholic and do not drink, you are clean. If you did drugs, but aren't anymore, you are also clean. Or are you that judgemental an alcoholic/drugaddict can never be clean? It's a disease like any other and of course "he's very sick", you usually will be after years of drugging/drinking, your organs take a toll.
@@missredumbrella Well, if you are an alcoholic and stopped drinking, you are clean, just as if you used to do drugs and stopped, you are also clean. @@anniesimone but he hasn't stopped drinking. Watch the Louis Theroux interview.
So glad Pete made it out alive. I'm American and love the Libertines & Babyshambles. Wish I could see them live but just knowing Pete's ok and putting out music is good enough. Ride On man!
God yes! Would love to see him in the states. Better yet, would love to see him in the UK. I kinda think he's too good for the US.
Yeah he quit the drugs 🎉 but now faces the exact same risk from obesity 💔
@@cease2xist653 Yes, he's gotten so big.
I’m from south Western Australia and Peter is so amazing writer and singer , wish him all the best 🖤🎼
Nobody makes it out alive
What a beautiful honest man. I can feel his soul when he speaks. One of life's greatest. I'd love to meet him one day and just give him a wink of acknowledgement, that's all he'd need to know the impact he has had on the world. ❤
Lol. Your comment made me smile cause that's exactly how I envision meeting Pete. Truth is Id be falling at his feet. A total shit show of embarrassment
Was really pleased to see him turn those addiction questions back on the interviewer. Object lesson.
People are so fekkin sanctimonious
Pete turning into an arty Paul Merton. Congrats on your new life and continues good luck with your sobriety.
I am so happy this came across my page. I always really liked him and he reminds me of a few friends of mine who were heavily into drugs. His poetry and the way he carries himself make me think he is from an older more romantic, more beautiful, and sensitive time.
It's wonderful to see you Peter, always expressing with that same gentle eloquence, curiosity, and kindness toward the human spirit and its foibles. Much love. I hope you do write your book one day.
Up the bracket is one of the hardest rock albums, this dude is a national treasure
Vertigo and horror show so fkn good
Shows that even darkest parts of the illness of addiction there is light and you can recover.
mate, he's still a drunk and a binge eater.
@@nedscheebly731he's on bupernorphine that's monthly buvidal
You can tell he's a real genuine guy
My wife in to it ... thing like .. drinking water ( whilst shaking his head ) 😂🤣😂🤣
hahahhahha i can feel you (con in mano una boccia di dab cruda :))
Watching what this man went through, magnified by the disgusting bloodthirsty english press, for years on end, he never ever seemed a bad man.
Rather contrary, he seems very nice and in the moment, and on top of that he is a very decent songwriter and poet as well. But the coherence is very becoming.
I think we are all rooting for you, Pete. Well done! :))
He put his self thru it mate .
@@paulleighton7078He put himself through the bloodthirsty English press?
Apart from when he is telling his cronies to throw people off of balconies.
Many years ago I played in some charity football games with Pete and even when he wasn't that well he was always very well mannered and funny. Plus we support the same football team which always made talking easy.
I have always loved peter.....even though he is younger and represented a different generation, i have always understood him.....and not just because i am a heroin/cocaine(crack) addict, although that particular insight is what it is......i have always "got" him.....and i love it that he is cleaner now.......and is a proper father /husband/artist......big love and respect to you peter. From Bristol uk.....love eternal people....
Addiction is a disease, and I appreciate Peter Doherty talking about being vulnerable. I think semantics can reduce stigma around relapse.
"Aids" is a disease. Addiction is disease like. Addiction is self-induced.
It's not a disease! More of a lost connection to yourself. That's the start of many addictions. Part of recovery is finding the connection to yourself again.
Regarding the poetry… I was suicidal and planning to end my life a couple / few years ago and then I got to the stage where around a 1 year back I was sat up late at night, pen and paper, trying to find the words for my goodbye letters to my mother and my family members etc and I struggled to find the words, so after a few evenings I just wrote a poem about my depression and drug addiction which has been haphazardly going on for 20+ years now and then straight after writing it down onto the scrap piece of paper, I felt lighter, as if I’d unloaded some negativity and I felt a little bit better, so I repeated it the next night, and write 2 or 3 poems the evening after that again, and I kept it up, I wrote whenever it came up, and after a month or two my depression had lifted so much more that I was writing with much more hope and positivity and I was starting to write about nature, and the odd funny off the cuff story type riddle poems about silly made up event’s etc and now I have a bunch of papers and folds of sheets , empty envelopes with them scrolled on the backs of, and paper scraps folded up, and about 50 + poems that I’ve written down, some written in a quick 3 minutes with no effort, others longer and perfected over a few days .
And I have not felt suicidal since , for a year, maybe a little more.
Big ups Pete, I’m happy to see you and to where you’ve got yourself to in life now, I have 21 years since I first tried heroin and have been in and off ever since, but no daily habit for around 3 years, but I’m back to dabbling on paydays with heroin and cocaine, maybe it’s my fazing it out period in my life ? Maybe, possibly, hopefully.. we’ll see, I’m 39 now so I’ve made it quite far already so it’s probably a good idea to hang it up now.
But yes I digress again, well done Pete, your a 1 in a billion in my opinion, and I wish you and your family all the luck and best wishes in the world for the future. ☮️💜☮️🙏
I’ve found great relief in writing haikus this year! Take care Twinkle ✨
Good to read this uplifting post. Mind yourself and keep moving forward. Your writing sounds really good.

Thank you, and best wishes to you, thanks for your reply. ☮️💜☮️
@@alwaysknow3356
I’m certainly trying, and I’m 100% making progress, and achieving more through opening my mind via writing, than anything else pharmaceutical that my Dr has given me.
I know I still have the drug dabbling, but without being complacent, I have kept it to paydays only for a few years now, and it’s been just enough to tame the beast without getting a new habit, and I feel I can and have got things to live for and move forward with in my life.
I’ve just in the last few months gotten myself out of a 14 year relationship that for pretty much the last half of became abusive and controlling and had fully isolated me from my friends and from my hobby too, so I’m feeling stronger and healthier every day now I’m finally out of that, and I’ll be 40 in a few months so a new chapter is coming in my life, I never thought I’d make it this far, not to sound dismal or like look at poor me type of thing, I meant even from the perspective of the drug abuse, there’s not a lot of 40 year old ex speedball’ers around, you know, 21 years of off and on injecting heroin and coke and crack is a long time, I know that just from the amount of funerals I’ve been to in my own town, even people I went to school with as well, and ex’s , friends and associates, it’s all very sad really, and robbing our own families of “ peace of mind “ for years.
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate that you can see a spark in me from just my comment. ✨☮️💯🤘
this is beautiful. May I say... that you are a writer. This is what happens when writers don't write - they get depressed. So for years your soul was searching for that missing piece and when you finally gave it to your soul - the act of writing - you found relief. Keep writing my friend. It's everything..
Pete Doherty god bless you every single day of your life , I know you probly will never see this but you are an amazing human being and you are loved so very much , in life we all get hurdles to get over I'm so proud of you , one day at a time ❤
God bless Mark Blanco !
Thanks Peter for all the amazing music. Keep it coming.
WHY oh WHY are we still talking about drugs when interviewing this absolute legend of a man? I'm tired and I think we're all tired of hearing these sort of questions being addressed to him..
It was a huge part of who he was
Pity they don't ask questions about the guy who died in his company that night... 😓
He is a poet and a wonderful musician with so much talent! Thats the most important thing!
Pete was very honest and sincere, well done
Love you Pete! I'm an American and have travelled to London 3 times to see him live. I'm very dedicated!
I’m American too and it’s so sad that his great music never really got played here in the States and most people don’t know about him and the bands because he never got to tour here.
Bestest news I've heard in years.🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'm glad he's come out alive. Honestly thought he wouldn't 😢 intelligent guy seems nice. Drugs got ahold of the best of them
Love, love, love Peter…his music is the best
Max, my beloved friend + a roadie for Nick Cave, died of a heroine overdose. He had a $5 note which once belonged to Johnny Thunders which he always said he would give to me, but the band he lived with sold it for smack after Max died. Typical!
It’s lovely to see how Katia seems to be Pete’s Laurie Anderson 💖 My Mum will always be a fan of what a nice gent Pete is, after having breakfast next to him in the Hoxton hotel years ago!
love from Margs + Blessings to Amy’s Spirit 🪷🙏🏻✨🕯️
Do u think johnny thunders got spiked with lsd by them lads who he had a smoke with in New Orleans maybe that made him want to come down by drinking all his methadone
Nurse!
Fuckin amazing interview. As a recovering addict myself and a musician(electronic) and I totally agree with Pete about creativity the soundproofing and the differences of creativity sober or not. And the whole interview
Bring a bottle and a bit of what you fancy. How can you not love this man? God Bless Pete Doherty!
Best description of tabloids and their readers.....spot on Pete .
I hear you brother 🙌🏽🎵 we can only do our best and it's nice to see the you being proud of yourself. I watched your Tommy Tiernan interview also. I understand when you spoke about being a writer and feeling that you never actually did what you set out to do. But you did 😆 like the man said here now. You're a brilliant poet and writer
I'm so glad Pete survived, awesome job getting clean! 🙌
Try to quit processed sugar and you will learn about “addiction.” Peter is a legend and what he’s done took an enormous amount of will.
People do it every day bro ,
@@Crosshatch1212 ppl do what?

I think quitting heroin is a million times harder than sugar! Harder on the body and mind.
@animalames78 The last part of my comment refers to that.
As a Chinese people I stand with Pete😂 his lyrics and poetry are amazing. just go ask Carl how popular he and Carl and The Libertines are among Chinese indie fans, they are my teenhood heroes.
❤
Never thought I'd spend the time listening to him as I fell into the trap that he in some way led Kate and Amy to the drugs.... I actually really enjoyed listening to him and he talked a lot of sense. Good on you Pete stay strong I have a New founded respect for you. Go for it fella. Love the art too.
More like the other way around...
Seems easy to get on with and quite humble really glad he kicked the drugs hope he keep on his creative path very articulate without any pomp.
Peter is a fucking genius and dosent takes shit from anyone anymore.
true.... why speak about self-destruction habits when life is forward, clean!!! And he is explaining that the media is awful on that for artists.
As Layne said “My bad habits aren't my title. My strengths and my talent are my title.” Beautiful soul, Doherty🙏. THANK YOU.
So happy for him
So beyond happy god spared this man’s life.
He's so talented
He's shady..
That whole London scene went balls-out with substances. Glad to see these dudes survived.
This is a much better interview than the one with Louis Theroux, which is not to criticise that, Pete is just in a better mood here, open, relaxed and talkative.
true but it's so clear the poor bugga is struggling with sobriety...
louis kept bringing up all the old topics and poking and prodding to get a response didn’t like it
A better interview? This is a prepared Pete. Louis caught him in his realness and had him crying and opening about things nobody has before, especially the death of that guy. This interview doesn't come close.
"Drinking water...Things like that" *shakes head in disapproval*
Hahah awesome.
Drinking water? Fish make love in it! lol
Nice to hear he‘s clean. May he stay so today and keep on 🌳

I'd forgotten she existed tbh
I stood shoulder to shoulder w/Pete on the coast - both now clean - but I remem the 6 days up phantasmagoria, including a time I 'borrowed' my sister's car on Xmas Eve to drive to Cov to pick a van up 4. Petey (3am start time), that in the man's words 'ere: "the odds of it (aforementioned insane journey) going wrong were strong!" 🤓 Managed to make and put out records, stillalive, still lucid. ..x Made up 4 him and the family, AND Carlos and the boys. Exciting times in the tale of the wayfairing troubadour to come... God bless ❤
Nice to watch and listen, thx.
❤ Pete he stayed true to himself all the way ❤
The people who been through some sort of therapy to come out the other side are the true people of success for me.
The weight and clean hands really suits him, he's right, when you're using you feel you're in a soundproof bubble and no-one can see what you're doing. Crazy
What a dude. Always loved Pete from the start. Pleased he’s clean and healthier now.
Großartig! Merci!
I love his honestly. There’s no lying to people about drugs, you lie to yourself only. Glad you’re doing well Pete.
So he did get the opportunity to talk about something interesting, and came up with those questions?.. was he instructed?.. anyway.. thx Pete, you tried, i really liked listening to you, that was awesome... 👍🏼👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼☺️🙂
God bless you pete stay strong
'it's a bit shit and cheap.... i mean i can be shit and cheap... but just not with kate...' i love how clever this guy is, he's so intelligent and sensitive. my ex gf once asked his manager if after kate he was heartbroken, and the manager goes.. 'well the world breaks pete's heart every single day..' i love this guy, true artist. just looked at his artwork it's amazing!
Good interview from Pete! He seems to be struggling with his addiction again very mixed emotions talking about drugs with him saying he’s getting excited then getting on the defensive he will ALWAYS be in recovery simple as that!
1st step
Well done Pete 👏 lad from Greenock.
The Shaman analogy at the end. Off the top of his head. Remarkable man.
Yeah that was beautiful
Amazing honesty
Good on ya Pete.
I know what he’s talking about with chemical dependency becoming intertwined in an artists belief to create. Then, he or she looks up one day, and there is no creating going on; just real drug addict hell.
One of the biggest parts of recovery is dealing with the guilt. Guilt will cripple you and all you end up doing is creating a guilt prison for yourself. If your loved ones and friends forgive you or they don’t, you have to just move on and try flip the guilt into responsibility.
Great interview, he’s very humble and approachable to answer so many obvious questions about creativity and drugs. I assume it’s not pleasant to go back to some of those memories.
Go on Peter! He seems a good lad actually.
Nice views here. Good for Peter he was not a good thief!
Well done mate, they concentrated on YOU.I heard the word Rattling the other day in context, odd.
Sobriety.Stay Safe!
Genius
The horror of addiction is it affects a lot of artists, it feels like having leprosy, tell noone and do better. I've always felt having to control my emotions to non existence was something I had to hide. Thank god it's never been heavy heavy drugs though I have been exposed, it terrified and I found it filled me with self disgust. Not a Pete philosophy though we need people like him to articulate this human condition, been with society forever...
The way he looks now he could play Hagrid and I don't mean this as an insult.
Talent
THIS GUY IS A HUGE INFLUENCE IN OUR BAND
love you pete
I think you will always be in recovery when a full on addict mate 5 years straight through no brew me mate and still early days but just keep busy..and never forget wat got you there
Blubber keeps him warm!
I genuinely wonder if Peter has adhd. His mind is always working, he's passionate when he focuses and has varied interests. Drugs may have been a way to wall out overstimulation. Hes clearly very intelligent but made some very unwise choices. Its great he got through. Ive seen the libertines and Babyshambles and loved them for years.
Yes, good point, I would think he does have adhd
When I see him I start to think about Amy.
Why isn’t she here with us anymore
😢
Salutations to Pete for making the effort.. it isn’t easy
This man is a POET!....
If only he N/KNOWS!!!
We clearly don't live on the surface of a rotating oblate spheroid mostly covered in water hurtling through an infinite vacuum on an aimless Godless journey to nowhere.
Honest Pete Doherty...... good luck to him !
Strange days for sure and God's definitely watching...... and waiting.

why they keep bringing the drug topic? The man is an amazing artist I could only wish they ask him something more important than his past.
What a good interview with him. Glad he's off heroin and crack, but I can tell he's teetering on the edge. He has a Buvidal injection, but I'm sure he's still struggling.
Stunning interview!!
Interview!?
I think at this point, Pete can answer or deflect the corny and cheap questions without needing to be asked.
He was just in a gregarious mood... he spoke more to his guy off camera than to the stiff "interviewer"
Keep going Pete your doing so well 👌
Pete is so underrated he is awesome and I can’t believe nobody gives a shit about him in America and they should because he is a brilliant writer. He loves Yeat’s. He’s amazing.
He is not underrated.. possibly, he is over credited.

Its unprocessed trauma...addiction is never the persons fault. The behavior is a biproduct but not the reason.
As an addict i can say it might not be our fault but it is our responsibility to not push our trauma onto others, with all the antisocial behavior that usually comes with addiction. Otherwise how are we any different from the people who traumatized us?
I don't think anyone blames an addict for the addiction.
It's what you do with your addiction that is your responsibility.
Is resisting addiction a byproduct of addiction?
You make it sound like addicts have zero control over their own decisions.
If what you said was peddled by the dept of Health, the drugs deaths would increase tenfold.
