Pretty cool they had Tron the character in Kingdom Hearts 2
The movie arrived at an unusual moment in time where video game culture was in its infancy and bold digital effects were still a bit of a head scratcher
Shot entirely on black and white 70mm film, stars like Jeff Bridges, Cindy Morgan and Bruce Boxleitner would have to wear white, skin-tight suits which were then filmed back-lit against black screens
Despite only containing around 15 minutes of computer generated footage, Tron marked the most ambitious use of CGI technology in any film made up until that point
It's true that some of the computers used to bring the film to life only used 2mb of memory (modern smart watches have around 512mb of memory) and contained just 330mb of storage
It anticipates issues we are still grappling with today: artificial intelligence, digital identity, privacy, personal data, the dominance of big tech
Tron was also the first attempt to visualise the digital realm itself - what was then called “cyberspace” but might now be termed “the metaverse”
It really stinks the Academy awards didn't properly recognize the hard craft Tron brought to the table
Thankfully the cult for it has grown and paved the way for modern filmmaking as well as our own leap forward in computer and motion capture/reality technology
This even influenced film-makers such as James Cameron, George Lucas, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, the Wachowskis (The Matrix bears many similarities to Tron) and former Pixar chief John Lasseter, who once said: “Without Tron there would be no Toy Story.”
I still hoping a third film can happen but they are finishing up a roller coaster at Disney world
