@derJackistweg My Z6II had better AF. So no, you don't have to spend more. You can spend quite a bit less and get better AF. Sonys 10yr old cameras have better AF. Cheap used. For $2500 the XH2s should've had amazing AF out of the box. You know, like Fuji claimed. They were wrong. And they've made it worse with firmware upgraded. It's the processor. It's not good enough. Nikon didn't have amazing AF until they developed the 7th Gen chip.

A6700, is a nice one to make fotos.
IF it would be better I could have saved a lot of money, but sadly it isn`t.
For Video it is far behind my X-H2s, because:
      - very bad rolling shutter
      - NO 10 bit !
      - X-H2s makes 14 (!!!) stop of dynamic range in F-Log2
      - no 4K 120
      - no 4K 60 W/O crop
      - no video RAW
      - overheating !
      - 2 card slots and one CF express B
      - Full size HDMI
      - way better viewfinder
And of course the X-H2s makes hell of a lot more frames / s, if one needs that.
But: If you are happy with a A6700, go for it.

I shoot portraits with the X-T5, and basically half of my shots are focused somewhere totally different than the green box was locked on. Even if it focuses on the eye, it would not focus on the iris, but the eye lashes, so if I come close to the model with an F/1.4 then don't expect the AF to do what you want it to do. Zoom lenses are the worse (16-55 in particular) and I get it that the camera decides where to focus, but it sends back signal to the lens that processes the information, and also it's different with every lens how much and what kind of (focal plane) light hits the sensor, so some lenses are still gonna be better at AF than others. I have Fuji's top portrait lens, the XF90, and it's still just meh. I prefer to just focus myself with one small focus point, but that's hard to do when your model is actually moving :P so well... you guys wanted vintage film photography feel? You got it! :D
Anyway, I still love the colours and the film-like texture of the photos, so I'm trying to learn shooting like if I was in the 90's, but maybe one day I might give up.

I took the effort, watched the video more than once and read all the comments below until today. To say it in advance, I'm a photo hobbyist with some semi professional tasks sometimes. The reason why I'm interested in your video is because I'm thinking about switching from Sony to Fuji because of the 'fun factor' as well as the 'famous Fuji colors'. Thus, your findings are important for my decision, so thank you for the effort you took with all your experiments. And that is what brings to my perspective, which I would like to add to all the discussions. What you did is an experiment. And to be recognized with the results of an experiment the experimentalist has to make the conditions, under which the experiment had been done, official. Why ? To enable other experimentalist to reproduce the findings in their own laboratory/environment. This is the (perhaps directly after the first rule, which is to be honest) the second important rule in experimental science. In order to be recognized by the community, you have to open up the details of your experimental setup. In cases where the author refuses to do so, there will be no serious journal willing to publish any article about what you were doing. So the question arising to me is, is it your intention to get seriously recognized by others with your findings or not ? If yes, you won't get around telling your specific camera settings as well as the exact lense types you used. End of comment at that point.
But I will also comment on the question, whether or not a lens is one of the decisive components for AF performance. As far as I understand AF technology, the general layout of such an AF system is a control loop, in which both, the camara processor with its software as well as the lens are taking part. The lens is not only the component, which reacts on what is coming as a steering signal from the processor. There is also a feedback from the lens, because the processor gets its informations through the lens. In such a system (and I constructed some of these feedback loops in my professional life) the most important parameters are the time constants of the different components. If these doesn't much in some certain range, the feedback loop isn't working properly. The usual symptoms in this case is either that the system starts to oscillate or that it reacts much to slow. That doesn't mean necessarily that this is the reason for the bad Af performance in your experiment. Frankly I even don't think so, because it can't explain the fact that the camera notoriously focuses on things outside of the 'green' eye-af-box. But what it means is that the lens with its own time constant (AF speed) is an important ingredient within the AF feedback loop and must not be disregarded.
Finally I very much hope that you are willing to share your experimental setup (all the parameters) with the community, in order to enable the reproduction of your results. In this case one can even think about making the results available to the Fuji R&D department to help improving their AF-systems.

    • @edvard2942
      @edvard2942  5 місяців тому +2

You took a time to watch the video and also you're saying that the lenses are the problem or settings, Lens or lens speed is not decisive in a person staying still and the camera focusing on other things that it shows you will focus. I dont care if any "journal" recognize me or post my stuff, I did already 4 videos on this topic , latest one with the best fuji lens. And also compared it with a cheap chinese lens. Results were the same, People who are not seeing that the lens in not the issue, and the settings is not the issue, dont understand how a camera AF system works. And with your comment you showed that too.

The color science, lack of cf express type b, no 6k, no open gate, no 4k120 was just too much of a hassle compared to my beloved xh2s that was a beast. Autofocus was good, but that's only what Sony cameras have, and I'm pulling my own focus most of the time anyway. So let's not try to act like autofocus is the greatest feature a camera can have, it's not. Learn to use the camera first, abuse its strength, cope with its weaknesses, if you can't get the results you want and you are sure that everything you could, then you sell them and you make a video. The lens truly impacts the AF speed. Just as you said, the camera determines it is focused, but in real world, only move the optical elements to adjust the focus, that mean if the lens focussing is slow (move the optical elements front/back slowly ) even the camera tracking the subject successfully (camera guess the correct focus length ) but the lens is moving slowly, and you moving again, finally you also can’t aim the object. Why I know that, because when I use my xt3 + xf 100-400 for bird photography, it clearly let me know the focusing between the camera and lens is not at the same time (not synchronized), I feel the lens is slower than the camera detection.

there are so much fuji fanboys out there.
and yes, im also one. i love fuji since the XT1, XT2, XT3, XH1... bought a whole lenslineup during all the years... but the AF performance was always a big issue for my work at events, where i like to rely on eyeAF tracking.
i take fuji just on my private time, with my daughter... but would love to use the expensive lens lineup we have for my daily work as a video and photographer...
personally i work with my 15sony bodys... but for a new teammember in our company i thought to invest in the xh2s... she isnt very technical orientated... so to change the AF for every shoot or every lens is not practicable... so we go for a canon R6ii with adapted old EF lenses... we also own alot EF lenses... and are waiting another year for a new fuji where i would love to use also on events.
thanks to your video, ... i love your conclusion... fuji should fix it with a complete re-design... focus is the most important stuff. and yes we also worked before with canon und nikon FF without all these goodies... but the sony a9 changed my way to work, i can rely on EYE AF tracking and spend more energy in frameing the shoot, catch the right moment, be aware of the backlight and scenerey in the back... rather then check if its focusing right...
and for video with my a7s3... how cool is to have the cam in a gimbal... without a heavy ext display and followfocus system...

Great review, thanks! You had me rolling with the Hand / Touch-Tracking section, that was hilarious! Truly hope Fuji figures this out, it’s had as large an impact on their sales as it did with Nikon’s Z platform. Looks like 3D finally set Nikon on the right path, hoping Fuji finds some secret Godzilla Kaizen to fix their AF woes… it’s really what’s holding me back from buying into the system (On A7IV currently). @@edvard2942 That seems to be the general consensus from multi-platform users. As a former Nikon shooter though, there is just something lacking with Sony Cameras… I just never really want to pick it up (purely subjective). I’m looking at the A7RV in part to use it’s 26mp Crop function to either extend the reach for current lenses or acquire some smaller glass. I know it’s just cropping, but for various wildlife shots I enjoy seeing the composition live vs. cropping in post. 26mp is fine for 90% of my needs. The A7RV also has the LCD/EVF rez I miss on my A7iv (which the Fuji X-H’s have). I’m still going to rent an X-H2 and a couple lenses I’m interested in to see if it could work. The X Series ecosystem would be such a great system for my entire family.

Yes, I agree. I'm primarily a video shooter. Since firmware 3.0, the camera hasn't been the same. Many people may not encounter this problem, as most are shooting human subjects at half or full height, maintaining the same distance, which, with no foreground elements in the frame, this won't really test the camera. The majority of the stuff I shoot won't really encounter this problem.
I own both the Fuji XH2s and the Sony A7RV. With the Fuji, once you partially cover the face, it loses focus. This doesn't happen with the Sony. However, I find that if I'm shooting very tight head/detail beauty shots in video, I can't rely on the Sony autofocus either.
I have to admit, I love the image from the Fuji more than the Sony (both stills and video), but I don’t see this problem being fixed, as the XH2s is nearly two years old.

    Sharing my experience here.
2yrs ago, I tested the XT-4 on a model / fashion shoot and the single point AF feels ok but... AF-C without subject tracking was completely whack. I thought my technique was bad after all, I only ever shot Canon for the last 12yrs, never a Fujifilm.
A couple of months later, I tried the XH-2 (non-S) but the results were nearly the same, subject tracking back then was completely whack... it couldn't stay on a subject even with minor movement in the scene. Non-subject tracking AF-C was the same as the XT-4.
That surprised me since on most UA-cam videos, they say the AF on Fujifilm cameras are fine... fortunately, I took it to myself to test all the major brands before deciding to switch to Sony. If I just watched UA-cam videos, I really might have gone to Fujifilm and got stuck with a system that I could barely use.

For live events, all I could do was just keep my fingers crossed. I bought all the lenses. The 18mm f1.4. The 33. I was a firm believer that eventually Fujifilm would have to fix it, but it was getting to the point of being embarrased in front of my clients. After the XH2S release I noticed the same autofocus behavior in all the sample footage online. I finally gave up. I'm shooting all Sony now (4 A7IV and 2 A7S3) and my blood pressure is back to normal. It's all about reliability and peace of mind. Would show you in camera it got the eyes in focus, birds, what not, but when actually reviewing the photos on pc they were clearly oof. I remember I went out to the park and there was a pigeon few metres away, activated animal detect, the camera was convinced that the af was on the bird, but when reviewed, out of 4 photos, all of them appeared to be back focused by couple of metres at least. Lens was 16-80. Then the update came, now it's miles better, but sometimes would still have the confirmation box on the eye of a subject when in reality the camera was focusing on the cheek or even on the other eye. Nikon and Canon is now as good as Sony while Fuji is still lagging behind. Yet for some reason, people making fun of Nikon for their auto focus.

I covered nearly my whole face with my hand, and every single shot was in focus with both cameras.

I bought the camera and a good Fuji lens for over €4000. Even after spending this much, I can barely take videos with it because the focus is so unreliable, I have had to forfeit money for jobs due to this. It got to a point where i had to stop and consider shooting manually. Since day one that i had an X-e4, and now that i use the X-h2 for work, updating the camera for better autofocus felt like placebo to me, it makes no sense that a camera this expensive with a smaller sensor can be so bad at times. But I'll keep it anyway, i love the colors, agree with you that most reviews here on YT are useless.

I several times contacted service center and reported out of focus problem during long distance photography but they ignored it. Lastly I showed them by using Nikon f mount sigma 150-600 lens along with adaptor f to fx mount. Now, they convinced and took my set for repairing. I don't know whether it can be repaired because it is a manufacturing defect. In each and every cases Canon R10, which I carry as a supporting camera, saved me in several occasions. I purchased Fujifilm set only for its light weight. Are Fujifilm company misguiding us? All reviews I have seen online, are got up case?

I absolutely love the XH2 and XH2S designs and features....except BOTH continue to have extremely deceptive autofocus which is a joke!! You take your time focusing and shooting, thinking you gave it the proper time to get it correct and afterward, soft images. I also want to add, the camera constatly moves the focus to the corner of the screen in between shots. I can be extremely careful not to touch screen but then it automatically moves focus to the corners.
On another note, it also "turns off autofocus" on screen .

After seeing this video i have tried to do the same thing with my xh2s with the viltrox 56 f1.4 that is the brightest lens i own (i have not already update the firmare) and after some test i can say for sure that my xh2s does not beahve like yours, if my model put her hand near the face but closer to the camera my focus remain on the eye, i can tell it for sure, i have tried multiple times and check the clip at the pc, even if the model put her hand neraly over the eye but closer to the camera the eye remain perfecly in focus . So there are two explanations 1- your xh2s is defective so you need to send it back to fuji to be replaced (i think is the correct one) 2- you have some af setting that is wrong.
