@@Powerland56Why would anyone want to spend eons of time setting up AF?! I certainly don’t have to on my Sony platforms. I actually want to switch to Fuji, but Fuji keeps encouraging me not to. AF is the key criminal consistently on a multitude of forums. I was so tired of trying to massage the AF out of the Z6ii that I ditched Nikon… had used them for decades, looks like they finally have their 3D figured out again. Truly hoping Fuji figures it out, it’s certainly costing them sales.

@derJackistweg My Z6II had better AF. So no, you don't have to spend more. You can spend quite a bit less and get better AF. Sonys 10yr old cameras have better AF. Cheap used. For $2500 the XH2s should've had amazing AF out of the box. You know, like Fuji claimed. They were wrong. And they've made it worse with firmware upgraded. It's the processor. It's not good enough. Nikon didn't have amazing AF until they developed the 7th Gen chip.

Just because of business reasons! WHY would any company build the "perfect product"? Because they don´t want to sell any new one?
A6700, is a nice one to make fotos.
IF it would be better I could have saved a lot of money, but sadly it isn`t.
For Video it is far behind my X-H2s, because:
      - very bad rolling shutter
      - NO 10 bit !
      - X-H2s makes 14 (!!!) stop of dynamic range in F-Log2
      - no 4K 120
      - no 4K 60 W/O crop
      - no video RAW
      - overheating !
      - 2 card slots and one CF express B
      - Full size HDMI
      - way better viewfinder
And of course the X-H2s makes hell of a lot more frames / s, if one needs that.
But: If you are happy with a A6700, go for it.

I shoot portraits with the X-T5, and basically half of my shots are focused somewhere totally different than the green box was locked on. Even if it focuses on the eye, it would not focus on the iris, but the eye lashes, so if I come close to the model with an F/1.4 then don't expect the AF to do what you want it to do. Zoom lenses are the worse (16-55 in particular) and I get it that the camera decides where to focus, but it sends back signal to the lens that processes the information, and also it's different with every lens how much and what kind of (focal plane) light hits the sensor, so some lenses are still gonna be better at AF than others. I have Fuji's top portrait lens, the XF90, and it's still just meh. I prefer to just focus myself with one small focus point, but that's hard to do when your model is actually moving :P so well... you guys wanted vintage film photography feel? You got it! :D
Anyway, I still love the colours and the film-like texture of the photos, so I'm trying to learn shooting like if I was in the 90's, but maybe one day I might give up.

ya all want details? I use the x-h2s with the 23mm 1.4 LM lens, and even at f /4 I have the same performance after the 6.0 update so put down your pitchforks.. Tracking was extremely dissapointing endeavour for me as well, and while I was happy with the AF before the update (mostly), I find it worse right now.
For the sake of argument, even if only our cameras got worse after the update (which is not the case, I see people in X-H2s groups every day with the same complaint), it's still a fujifilm software issue, so stop defending them, maybe?

What's most unfortunate about all of this is just how far behind Fujifilm really is with its autofocus and its users are somehow convinced that it's just as good if not better than Sony/Canon.
This will be the second time I sold an X-H2S camera body and it will be the last. I'm done believing that Fujifilm will ever overcome this limitation and get back to using Fujifilm for what they truly excel at; travel and recreational photography. For that task, the X-T series has always been my preference so I realize now that there is no real reason for me to keep the X-H2S.

The large number of XH2-S owners who, like you, have reported this problem means that there can be no doubt about the veracity of the problem.

    Sharing my experience here.
2yrs ago, I tested the XT-4 on a model / fashion shoot and the single point AF feels ok but... AF-C without subject tracking was completely whack. I thought my technique was bad after all, I only ever shot Canon for the last 12yrs, never a Fujifilm.
A couple of months later, I tried the XH-2 (non-S) but the results were nearly the same, subject tracking back then was completely whack... it couldn't stay on a subject even with minor movement in the scene. Non-subject tracking AF-C was the same as the XT-4.
That surprised me since on most UA-cam videos, they say the AF on Fujifilm cameras are fine... fortunately, I took it to myself to test all the major brands before deciding to switch to Sony. If I just watched UA-cam videos, I really might have gone to Fujifilm and got stuck with a system that I could barely use.

I think Fuji has a problem with PDAF. I think it reverts to Contrast Detect AF a majority of the time. The funny thing is, a lot of Fuji fanboys have made fun of Panasonic's CDAF system (before they added PDAF recently) when Fuji isn't much better at all. They fooled me once, never again. All I ever asked of them was to tell the truth about their limitations. Fuji lied when they said the XH2s was as good as Sony and Canon AF. Thank goodness Nikon caught up with the Z9/Z8 so I didn't have to go back to Sony or Canon.

The lens truly impacts the AF speed. Just as you said, the camera determines it is focused, but in real world, only move the optical elements to adjust the focus, that mean if the lens focussing is slow (move the optical elements front/back slowly ) even the camera tracking the subject successfully (camera guess the correct focus length ) but the lens is moving slowly, and you moving again, finally you also can’t aim the object. Why I know that, because when I use my xt3 + xf 100-400 for bird photography, it clearly let me know the focusing between the camera and lens is not at the same time (not synchronized), I feel the lens is slower than the camera detection.

So let's not try to act like autofocus is the greatest feature a camera can have, it's not. Learn to use the camera first, abuse its strength, cope with its weaknesses, if you can't get the results you want and you are sure that everything you could, then you sell them and you make a video. I took the effort, watched the video more than once and read all the comments below until today. To say it in advance, I'm a photo hobbyist with some semi professional tasks sometimes. The reason why I'm interested in your video is because I'm thinking about switching from Sony to Fuji because of the 'fun factor' as well as the 'famous Fuji colors'. Thus, your findings are important for my decision, so thank you for the effort you took with all your experiments. And that is what brings to my perspective, which I would like to add to all the discussions. What you did is an experiment. And to be recognized with the results of an experiment the experimentalist has to make the conditions, under which the experiment had been done, official. Why ? To enable other experimentalist to reproduce the findings in their own laboratory/environment. This is the (perhaps directly after the first rule, which is to be honest) the second important rule in experimental science. In order to be recognized by the community, you have to open up the details of your experimental setup. In cases where the author refuses to do so, there will be no serious journal willing to publish any article about what you were doing. So the question arising to me is, is it your intention to get seriously recognized by others with your findings or not ? If yes, you won't get around telling your specific camera settings as well as the exact lense types you used. End of comment at that point.
But I will also comment on the question, whether or not a lens is one of the decisive components for AF performance. As far as I understand AF technology, the general layout of such an AF system is a control loop, in which both, the camara processor with its software as well as the lens are taking part. The lens is not only the component, which reacts on what is coming as a steering signal from the processor. There is also a feedback from the lens, because the processor gets its informations through the lens. In such a system (and I constructed some of these feedback loops in my professional life) the most important parameters are the time constants of the different components. If these doesn't much in some certain range, the feedback loop isn't working properly. The usual symptoms in this case is either that the system starts to oscillate or that it reacts much to slow. That doesn't mean necessarily that this is the reason for the bad Af performance in your experiment. Frankly I even don't think so, because it can't explain the fact that the camera notoriously focuses on things outside of the 'green' eye-af-box. But what it means is that the lens with its own time constant (AF speed) is an important ingredient within the AF feedback loop and must not be disregarded.
Finally I very much hope that you are willing to share your experimental setup (all the parameters) with the community, in order to enable the reproduction of your results. In this case one can even think about making the results available to the Fuji R&D department to help improving their AF-systems.

thanks to your video, ... i love your conclusion... fuji should fix it with a complete re-design... focus is the most important stuff. and yes we also worked before with canon und nikon FF without all these goodies... but the sony a9 changed my way to work, i can rely on EYE AF tracking and spend more energy in frameing the shoot, catch the right moment, be aware of the backlight and scenerey in the back... rather then check if its focusing right...
and for video with my a7s3... how cool is to have the cam in a gimbal... without a heavy ext display and followfocus system...

Pictures of kids on a swing is also a test for an autofocus system that can be repeated easily in any playground, but also in any lab.
It is a very repetitive movement. It has a stable curve describing the speed of movement. The movement follows a regular curve. So something that can be detected and can be predicted.
And: it is something which many parents and grand parents want to take pictures of.
Give it a try. I did so. Getting a sharp picture with my Fuji x-t5 is just luck.
    Frustrating.

Fuji has agressive marketing and all the reviewers ar well paid. I never seen anyone, who earns mony with photography, using Fuji cameras. And the FUJIFILM X100 series are total joke. Dumb people fall for this marketing and buy a camera that can't even do what phone could.

For the most part it works fine for what I do, but this late in the game I would have liked much better autofocus. Even Panasonic has caught up quickly to the competition. As have all other brands. Fuji is the one slacking the most in AF

You should post this video on an official Fujifilm forum if they have it or just send it to their support. There is a bigger chance they will fix the problem if they see it. I shoot on Canon R6 but I'm actually planing to replace it with Fujifilm x-s20 (don't laugh). I need something small for travel and Fujifilm is the only brand I've never owned. I was actually aware about the AF issues but it seems the problem is bigger than I thought.

it was at least more or less possible to use (naturally it could not compare with the autofocus of canon, sony, nikon, etc.). But now with fw 6.00 they broke what was not the best, completely. I don't have enough anger. I have been using Fujifilm cameras for 7 years and I have never encountered such a shame. I bought the H2s in the hope that this camera would finally work as Fujifilm marketers said it would. But no, now, perhaps, this flagship has become a disgrace to the brand. This is very, very, frustrating.

I can also say that you are 100% correct X-H2S autofocus is nowhere as good as Canon or new Lumix S5II and S5IIX cameras. It's even worse than the old Lumix S5 using contract detect. I say this because I photograph kids running around, which is a combination of portrait, wildlife and sports, and I would be lucky if I get 50% of the shot in focus with X-H2S or X-H2. Out of the systems that I have, Canon still goes first, then Lumix then Fujiflim.

I still use single point af for bird photo, birders will think I’m crazy. It’s what I’m used to but I know Fuji tracking isn’t great so I don’t even bother. For birders many use canon and they are top notch esp for small twitchy birds which is really the gold standard test for tracking.

    • @dodavis1636
      @dodavis1636 4 місяці тому +1

I don't think single point is crazy for birding, it's the only thing that works for me too. I just took my X-H2 to Costa Rica and bird detect would indicate it was focused on the eye but when I reviewed the images it was rarely actually focused on the eye. So I eventually went back to using single point just like I do with my X-T3.

TLDW: OP reveals at 14:18 that fujifilm uses 104 very spaced out focus points in continuous subject/box/area tracking autofocus tracking instead of 425 (available on single autofocus and small single set point continuous focus) which causes major subject tracking issues as the camera jumps drastically from one of the 104 points to the next despite displaying "tracking" confirmation.

    • @edvard2942
      @edvard2942  4 місяці тому +2

The only very reliable and modern feeling AFC is in that "AREA" with 425 af points, I can shoot bursts of 30fps (video) and it will look almost like a sony autofocus footage asa you can see on 11:20 , THe only mode that uses 425 af points looks very good. The question is, This XH2S has the same 425 and uses only 117 mosty just like the XT3 from 2022.

It is impossible for the panasonic AF to be like the state of the fuji nou. From what I saw on other reviewers, the autofocus system on S5II (smoothness, accuracy, lack of stepping, lack of hunting) I can 100% be sure that is good. Maybe has some minor quircks but nothing like the fuji. Fujifilm now is not usable unless you shoot at f4 or higher.

I'm finding that when I have a subject's eye locked and there are other people in the background, the camera will sometimes shift focus to someone in the background. This is for still, I don't do video. AF on my X-H2S is significantly worse than before the update. AF problems on firmware 6.00 are being reported widely. People can have different experiences with the same hardware and firmware. Fujifilm have advised me to initialise the camera, which is pretty much their advice for any behaviour that they don't recognise, via their archaic email support.

Why doesn't Sony have the same issues? There should not be any excuse for such stupid autofocus. Not even talking about aperture jumps. On Sony even the cheapest $80 pancake zoom has a smooth aperture while zooming if you stop down to a constant f/5.6. Meanwhile Fuji's $400+ XF 16-80 can't do smooth aperture change bruh.
