Apparently my friend doesn't like it when I yell "MISS, MISS, MISS" when he putts. What a weirdo.
“Nobody wants to play with someone who has no idea what they’re doing.” I cherish any opportunities I get to introduce disc golf to new players. I might even say they’re my favorite players to play a round with.

The first time before I had ever thrown a disc, I met a terrific and patient player who was giving me a lot of those etiquette tips you have mentioned here. I find that it can not hurt to ask a solo player if you want to play a round with them. If they say, No. You have to respect it. That person might be waiting on a group of friends or they just want to have some personal time for themselves. Can't fault people for that.
You just like looking like a god of flight.
Just kidding, and yeah, I'm always looking for new players as long as they don't hit me with discs (I've had a dude grip lock so hard he almost took my head off and I was to the side and behind him).
All of these rules come down to “Don’t be a dick”
Maybe. But newer players need to understand what "being a dick" means. When I started, I had no idea that I was supposed to take my disc out of the basket after I made a putt before the next player threw. Someone nicely explained it to me and I was able to be less of a dick :)

Also, that wasn't vandalizing the course, that was throwing dead limbs out of the way. Those can really be tripping hazards, so I'm going to put that there with picking up trash, haha.

Dude, get a demagnetizer, they're generally really cheap
1.Understand the essential rules of the game.
2. Make sure you're obeying the specific park rules(they differ).
3.Take care of the course! Don't litter and even tidy up garbage.
4. Return any discs you find to owner..name and # is often on disc or put it in Dropbox on course, or find the discgolf course FB page, or drop of at nearby store (they have lost & founds).
5.LET faster groups play through! If ppl r constantly waiting for u, let them go ahead. If course is backed up/ groups on every hole thats different, but if there's no one ahead of u for several holes and ppl waiting, let them go first!
6. Avoid skipping ahead of other groups. Ok to skip ahead so I can start your round w/o being slowed down But make sure there's no one behind u when u skip to a hole..and if there is a group that started before u and they catch up to u..let them thru. They started first so they deserve to continue at the pace they're at.
7. Keep your disc golf groups small(4ppl is ideal) so other groups aren't waiting.
8. Music-keep it at a reasonable level, so your not effecting others' games.
9.Make sure hole is clear before u throw, if u hit someone it's very painful.
10. Avoid distracting other players, especially during putting-be out of thier line of site-be quiet-dont stand directly behind them.
11. Avoid walking ahead of another players shot before they've thrown.
12.Be ready for your shot and ready to go, to keep the flow of the game.
13. Be helpful, respect specific requests.
14.Take your disc out of the basket before next person's shot.
15. Respect the image of disc golf/other players-avoid excessive swearing, abusing substances, littering etc.
Don't smoke weed if you aren't going to offer it to the rest of the card XD

A couple more: if you are playing alone or with a friend it is fine to throw a couple practice discs per shot, but if there are people waiting behind you to start the hole, keep it moving (or let them play through). There is nothing worse that waiting at the tee while someone misses a putt and proceeds to empty their bag trying to make the putt they just missed. Also, if people are waiting for you to finish a hole, and the basket is out of sight of the tee, yell at the group behind you, “Clear!” when you finish the hole.

What if it's a 1000' hole with a dogleg at 700' and you can see the group ahead beyond the dogleg. Should you still wait for them to hole out before teeing off?
I would change the last one to "wait until you get far enough in the woods before swearing and using illicit substances".
As someone who just recently got back into disc golf, the gatekeeping by some groups who have played for "years" really bugs me because it doesn't set a great image for those who really look out for new players.
I completely understand where you are coming from! I remember posting a few things on the dgcoursereview.com and all I can remember was some of the hate messages I received from some of the veterans/old timers. It was ridiculous and pretty sad on their part
Have been playin since i was a teen, some 14 years or so now. Played a new course recently. Ive never been big into the gear scene, i only carry about half a dozen discs in a simple satchel. The course i was playing had 18 baskets and 32 tees, with two courses crossing over each other using alternate tees to add some variety. I threw a weird line and ended up splitting from one intended course progression to the other. Asked some folks with branded everything where the next tee was and got some chuckles and light hazing. Joined them on their way to that tee and shut them up by throwing sidearm into a dog-leg left and parked right under the basket while they struggled with a hole that should have followed their natural line.
@@fulsame1 Love these stories lol. Unfortunately, there are some people out there that will belittle you because you don't "appear" to be a true disc golfer. Glad you were able to shut them up with a sweet throw lol.
Who gives a shit what anyone else is doing or tthinking about you? Just play your game, if a group is in a big rush let them play through, if anyone is "gatekeeping" laugh at them and tell them to fuck off and go on with their game

Having dogs off-leash during rounds is bad etiquette at best and usually against the law. I love dogs and love taking them to designated areas to socialize and exercise, but when talking about being respectful to the course, to the card mates, and not being distracting, this widespread practice of having off-leash dogs during rounds is doing more harm than good to the game IMO. Great video though!
Yes! Dogs on leash should for sure be an etiquette rule. Puppers have blocked my putt before right when I released and walked up to the tee pad mid drive :( It’s honestly super distracting and a lot of work to have a dog on the card than to not have one anyway.
@@mandarynornj4020 totally agree with you. At the course nearby at a local park, it is required for dogs to be on leash, but you rarely owners following that rule. I love dogs just as much as the next person, but many are not trained well enough by their owners to apply proper etiquette while playing.

For some people like ourselves, our dog is well trained and simply follows us along when we play without distracting other groups. And if it’s busy, we don’t bring her or we put her on her leash. Unfortunately, there are so many bad dog owners with poorly trained dogs that have ruined it for everyone.
It really is all about common sense and being spatially aware, but agreed that it’s against the rules and is a widespread problem!
My friend has a dachshund who's great to play with, but occasionally I do have to shoo him off the teebox before a shot. Other than that, he's a chill companion, and I'm always impressed how much ground he covers on tiny legs.
I had a dog chase my disc recently, grab it, and run away. Chewed it up. Owner was like "haha isn't that cute". It wasn't.
I also LOVE waiving the group behind me on, when my group has putted out. It lets them know that they are clear to throw, and that my group is ready for incoming discs.

Am 15, started playing for fun. So many times have some older players just assumes am a lost child or something and just stepped ahead , like al be reading the info for the next throw and someone just pushes me to the side and starts playing. YOUNG PLAYERS EXIST don’t think that just because I’m not a adult that I can’t play the game
We are sorry you have to deal with that Tristan! You are going to meet a lot of interesting people through disc golf and in life, and sometimes its worth it to speak up! Other times, you just have to not bother with those kinds of people, they aren’t even worth your time 👍

@@Megatherium no, at the time of that comment i was overweight, very slow in the game. i Usually needed 4-5 throwes per course and where i live quite a few more "serious" players live and play. Its no longer the case but still it was quite annoying and discouraging
Yeah, I catch myself in the complaining mode and have to stop myself so I don't ruin it for others. Granted, I only take it out on myself, but no one wants to be around someone who is crying about how bad he is. Thanks for the reminder.
Yeah I used to be more expressive and visibly frustrated when things were not going well. Luckily I’m much better these days and have learned that it’s just nice to be out playing disc golf!
This is my biggest problem. I have a problem life and it's a struggle not to let it bleed into my game

I get so annoyed by groups not leaving the hole after they have finished it, e.g by counting scores or just chatting.
Yep I always grab my disc, wave to the group on the tee just to let them know/thank them for waiting, and then get all my shit together at the next tee pad.

Rule #2 is a big issue where I play locally. It seems a lot of disc golfers don't seem to care about the city park's rules in place. Not all courses are located in a city park, but when a course is in a city owned park, the rules are more strict, and a lot of golfers just don't seem to care. It's the reason why my home course was almost shut down by the city years ago. This particular course was is a city park, and the park has a no smoking & drinking policy, but that doesn't stop a lot of the golfers from smoking weed and drinking as soon as they hit the holes in the woods. Look, I don't care if someone smokes week or drinks, but just follow the rules of the park. It's that simple.
Forreal just play some where that doesn't have those signs my usual course doesn't and me and my buddies checked out a new one that had those signs so we just left as simple as that haha no need to ruin it for everyone and inconvenience other people with it

If you bring a pet or small child, keep it controlled as much as reasonably possible.
And if you can’t control your pet or child, don’t bring them to the course!
Another rule that I like is if you get stuck at a tee and the group in front of you is looking for a shanked drive nearish the teebox, give them a hand in their search. Additionally, If you see a disk, check with any groups around you that may have thrown it before picking it up. Also, for the love of god, please mark your discs!

no name...no number... But i always call the number before i attempt to track down.its owner
..you'll be surprised how many times i have talked to the owner,arrange some kind of meet up to get it back to them.....then short time later have someone walk through looking for a disc matching the one i just found...

I don't mark my discs on purpose. If I lose it, I don't want someone else to feel bad about keeping it.

It’s funny that you have dogs in the video and failed to mention a rule or two about that. So let me help, if your dog doesn’t have perfect recall make sure they are on a leash at all times. 2nd clean up all messes your dog makes. 3rd your dog or dogs shouldn’t slow play. 4th if your dog or dogs are awesome, please bring them.
You aren't the first to mention that lol. We only do it during off hours and only at our home course. Still, rules are rules and we should have mentioned it!
I thought the same thing. When I saw the dog running into frame I actually thought you were about to mention that. A big part of good etiquette, as you say, is to minimize distractions for other players. Dogs running loose can be a distraction. "Don't worry, he's friendly" doesn't make it ok. Great video, I just think you missed an opportunity there.

confused on rule 10 where u say stay out of sight of player but dont be behind them hows does this work is there a cloaking cape or something i dont know about
Hahahah good question. Honestly, the main issue is just being in their way/line of sight when they are putting. Even just waiting off to the side is good enough (even if they can still see you). Just don't be standing right in front of their line. As for standing behind them, most people don't have a problem with this. I think it just bothers some because it makes them feel uncomfortable, like as if someone is looking over their shoulder. It's weight I know, but can get in people's heads, especially for putting.

The first time I had ever thrown a disc, I met a terrific and patient player who was giving me a lot of those etiquette tips you have mentioned here. There was one tip you did not mention. What is the best way to signal to the next group behind you once you have finished playing a hole? Sometimes, you can't directly see where the basket is and not knowing if the group of you has completed their hole or not.
i try to wave at them with my putter or leave my bag visable from the tee box to show them we are moving on or still there
Sometimes if a basket is around a corner and can't be seen from the tee pad or approach shot, a nice clear yell of "clear!" once you're done with the hole is a pretty good way to tell the people behind that they're clear to shoot...
It’s always a good idea. Again, people need to be aware of their surroundings. Some holes even have bells when the basket you are shooting to is blind
@@erictriplett33 heh, on the courses in my area, that would just result in people all over the course yelling CLEAR so you could never tell who was clear of what.
Having played ball golf for 30 years, most of this was second nature to me. I am closing in on one year playing DG. Here are some good/bad/tips:
1.) Getting to a course very early, I usually never run into people and play unimpeded rounds.
2.) I have experienced good and bad with returned discs. I know some lost discs have never been returned to me. One time, I found a girl on the course collecting discs in a big paper bag. There are people who wipe out the names and return them to stores for cash. I call them dirtbags or scumbags, whichever you prefer.
3.) Not a fan of garbage cans on a course. They usually overfill and bring inevitable garbage to the course. If you can bring it in, you can bring it out.
4.) Be self-aware. If you are the only one to birdie a hole, it's your teebox. Next tee grab your disc and get on the tee, ready to throw. Don't make others wait when it's your teebox, otherwise I will jump in and throw if you are too slow to realize.
5.) Have fun, remember a shitty round at disc golf is better than going into a soul sucking job.

lol, I got the stink eye once when I had to join a random group and was walking behind a player to my disc, which I do all the time in ball golf, in order to be ready for my shot when it was my turn. Mind you I'm only a casual recreational player, they were in some sort of tournament... Lesson learned :) As a Canadian, I just stopped and apologize, played thru the next whole... I think I needed to watch this video before heading out :)
Honestly, ready golf is the way to go! Most people play like that. However, when joining a random group, it's hard to know the "standard" is lol

Mostly great rules, but I'm 50-50 on #11. If you're playing a really wooded course or need to find your disc before it gets lost, then run up there and find the spot. It's better than making the entire card waste 10 minutes looking for a shot that got off course.
It's not just always disrespect, which is why I would put heavy emphasis on "avoid." Yeah, you try not to, but sometimes you gotta find that disc while you have the flight path in your mind.
For sure Seymour, we play the same as you. If you got an eye on the disc, you better go get it before you lose it!

Lol you don't have to follow everything, a lot of it is useful for when playing tournaments. Most of the time it's very casual! 👍

Great video. Wish every course had a disc return box. Found one last weekend in some thick brush, but the last 4 digits of number had worn completely away. I didn’t know what else to do, so I just placed it under the basket of the hole I found it.

Great video! At a public course where leagues set their schedules and play “shot gun” format there needs to be consideration for recreational players -not expecting rec’s to let every league group to pass through (especially when it’s a crowded day).

Disc Golf rules and etiquette will go the way of bowling rules and etiquette. Serious bowlers know and follow the etiquette but people just there to try to have a good time don't know and don't care about it.
We have a small park in our neighborhood with disc golf but it also has a lot of other amenities including picnic tables and a playground. The baskets are located close by and i have seen many close calls with adults and children almost being hit with discs. Unfortunately, some disc golfers throw their discs even when they risk injuring others. They don't even apologize for almost hitting people.

If there isn't a name and number on the disc then I say it's a free for all. Sometimes the number on the disc doesnt work, sometimes they never answer. Sometimes it's someone who doesnt live in the area and they let you keep it. But if I get hold of the right person and they wanna make the time to meet then we will otherwise it will be mine. I've never seen a drop off location at my disc golf courses near me.

I would never argue with ya but just have one angle regarding returning a disc. I might just find more discs than anyone else in the world. I have a gift for it. When playing in a group I always am able to find it by simply "marking" in my head when last saw it... "hard hyzer 20 feet high and 4 feet just past pine tree". Secondly, I am not very good at disc. I throw three or four errant shots a round - as in stupid-bad. So I am in the woods and deep, thus, find other discs. I just send a text and let person where it was placed. There is always a nice safe place near like "under garbage can at tee-9". If no number I am going to steal your idea about going to web-site and post facsimile. Never thought of that - TY!.

Wait for people to finish a hole before throwing, unless they are at least 2x past your max distance or finished with the hole. You may think "I probably can't throw it that far." but you may have a tailwind or something that causes your disc to get too close to other people. If you didn't see they were there it's understandable, but be aware.

If I'm in a big group, sometimes we'll tell singles or doubles to throw through us, but that's different than just biting at the heels of the group ahead of you.

#6 is a big problem @ STAFFORD WOODS in New Jersey. Ppl constantly see a backup at hole 1 then jump over to hole 10, this causes backups halfway thru the round which is pretty lame. Amazing course if anyone has not played it!
I have a question on pace: for longer holes, should I wait to tee off until the other group is done with the hole? Or just until they're well out of range of my drive? Or somewhere in the middle? I'm not throwing more than 200' tops yet, so on a 450' hole I feel a little pressure to not just sit and wait for the people ahead to finish putting before I even tee off, but it also feels rude to follow too closely behind another group, even if there's zero danger of me hitting them with a throw.
general rule of thumb is about 2-2.5 times your max distance throw. but still try to wait for them to finish the hole entirely though

On a 9 hole course the other day by myself, used by groups going in different directions (1-9 clockwise, 10-18 counter-clockwise from different tees). Threw my 1st shot when a group of 6 or 7 was finishing their previous hole (coming the other way). I was 3/4 of the way to my disc in plain sight when I surprisingly saw them start throwing at the basket I was finishing. Was that proper etiquette on their part or was I in the wrong to want to finish the basket I was almost done with?
You are not in the wrong, if you threw first before the began the hole, they should have waited until you finished. At the same time, alternate direction courses sound like a nightmare!
Some people are just clueless when it comes to proper etiquette (and the reason we made this video). Sometimes common sense isn’t common sense for some 👎
I remember one time we had this group ahead of us that decided to take a break after playing the hole we were about to throw on. They watched us play the whole entirely, and we assumed they were planning to let us throw. Just as we finished the hole and were about to jump ahead of them, they decided that their break was over and began to tee-off, right in front of us. No comment, no “did you want to play through?”, just stupidity at its finest! 👌🤪
I've always been moderately annoyed by players dumping steaming loads on the course.

A couple of those really hit home.. I often see a group of 10 players at my local course taking their time while also being super loud/obnoxious.
First time I went to play a week ago, and in between from my second shot on the second hole of the course and it's basket, a couple was just standing there talking for a good TWENTY MINUTES! They just stood there chatting away and one of the. Just kept throwing discs into the next holes basket from there as well. I was so annoyed but I didn't want to leave after just getting to do only 1 hole, so I just marked where I was at and then backtracked a little bit a d practiced mid range/putting shots on hole 1 until they finally just left. Thankfully noone else was playing behind me that evening.
That's when you kindly let them know they're being oblivious.
I don't really don't agree too much with 6, 12, and especially 14. We putt with discs in the basket all the time. Only rules I care about are returning discs, staying out of the way putting, picking up trash and letting people play through.
That one does seem pretty minor compared to others.
I think a good rule for letting people play through is that if you waited for the previous group, then you shouldn't let the next group play through. It wasn't you holding them up, it was the group in front holding you up. If I didn't have to wait before teeing off, then I might throw my drive, but I'll wait by the tee regardless if I've thrown or not.
Also, skipping ahead is never appropriate imo. If you start on hole 6, then you're gonna end on hole 5. Another group might be waiting on hole 6 to let you play through.
Came here to try to figure out how to return discs with no numbers. I'm a new player and I've only found one disc with contact info (which was promptly returned), but I've found five more discs now with no contact info. The courses don't have drop boxes or any nearby stores.
How are you supposed to go about returning unmarked discs?

An even better option, is to look for the courses club Facebook group, and post them on there

imo if you find a disc your responsibility ends at calling the number and leaving it somewhere for the owner. It shouldn't be your responsibility to drive anywhere or hunt down a social media page to find the owner, though those are very kind things to do, they're going above and beyond what's required.
Watching the video made me want to get a drop box on the course for just that reason. I don't really like storing people's dx leopards and sharks for them to never return a call. I have also lost discs that would have been returned other than it was just too big a pain to arrange a meeting time, so I told the person to keep the disc.
What do you do when you find a disc with no name/number? I have only found one like this but it can still happen.

How about calling "FORE!" whenever your disc has even the *slightest* chance of heading toward others down course. I've seen a couple people hit and many more almost hit this year and most were more upset about having zero warning than actually getting hit. Don't be afraid to call four for your playing partner who doesn't think it'll reach.

When your group is 5 or more, let every group play through. Nothing more frustrating than a bunch of noobs blocking traffic.
And no good players ever play in a group that big, haha. I've been part of those big groups, and everybody gets to play through us, even if we're halfway through a hole. That's just how it goes, and it's kinda fun to watch the shots sail past you.
One that could be mentioned is what to do, if your disc golf course has parked cars nearby and one happens to be hit by a disc.
Simple, if you damage a parked car you leave a note and pay to fix it.

I was stuck behind a group of six at hole 7 and they wouldn’t let me through because they just played faster as they seen me catching up. And i know they probably all felt rushed and did not enjoy it as much.

I especially love the "look out for the environment." Course designers use nature to make the courses more interesting and challenging. Get better, don't rip up the trees.

I cut down thorny vines sometimes, but that's not really part of the course design. I've also walked through with a sprayer (buddy carried our discs) to take out the poison ivy near the rough, just because it didn't seem worth it to make people suffer.
These courses sometimes need love, not hate for the trees.
I really liked that you included the making noise with your bag when someone is putting. Sometimes it can be hard getting discs out of your bag, so it's better to wait until there is a transition between shots. I've had it throw me off before on a putt where someone did that.
As to the karma of returning a disc...Today I found a disc while I was looking for my own and texted the guy immediately. I found my own after I corresponded with him about hiding it when I was leaving for the day.

If you find a disc, hide it under a trash can at the course. Text and call the number as well as leave a voicemail with what hole the trash can is on.

The main reason trash bothers me on courses is because I have a harder time spotting my discs, due to the bright colors of the litter drawing my eyes to it.

Letting groups play through is huge. It’s super frustrating to have a group of 4 playing really slow (with nobody ahead) hold up smaller groups with no regard. Might be my biggest Disc Golf pet peeve

Depends how much work it is to get a disk for me. I’ll return a disk I happen upon in grass or similar, but if I climb a tree or fish it out of water it’s mine number or not.
If they have numbers on them then that's shitty of you. If they don't, they're fair game imo.
You can always check the clubs Facebook page if no number is found on the disc, but after that, it’s yours IMO
I always call if I find it playing a round but I have a lake rake that I spend 50 bucks on materials plus a couple hours building the thing, not to mention the hours I spend getting muddy wet stinky with blisters on my hands to rescue some discs from the shadowy depths. Any I find raking are mine. End of story.
Only recently beginning to play and having golfed for 50 years, I enjoy the mush more casual approach disc golf and players. I do long for a little more structure sometimes. My pet peeves, talking and music during throws and an endless line of singles wanting to play through. Singles should be joining up to form groups of 3 or 4.
While not a disc golf rule and normally a park rule: keep dogs on leashes unless the park is marked as a leash free place.
Just because your off leash dog is okay with other people/dogs coming up to them doesn't mean my dog is. Sorry for the rant but my dog was just attacked by an off leash dog. (He's fine but it's not helping the reactive training.)
It's ok! We should have included that in the video since there are many others who have mentioned it. 👍 Our dog is well trained not to go up to other dogs, especially when she has her ball 😂. It's still not excusable, which is why we only do it during off hours and only at our home course. Sorry to hear about your dog being attacked, hopefully the training gets better!👍
I feel like most new disc golfers have been golfing before. These are effectively the same as ball golf. I find ppl understand when you say, play it like a golf round. Most differences are minor anyhow

Good question! It’s no so much being out of sight, but out of their LINE of sight. Therefore, if you are in their peripheral vision, they should be fine!
@@JustDisc so humans have a field of view of 120 degrees and let's say stand behind someone takes another 90. That's only 75 degrees in each side. Damn that's going to make games a little bit more fun. Trying to stay in that thin line. In all seriousness that's for making this. Although I believe it's futile. Most of this is common sense. The people this needs to reach don't care.
It’s more just to respect your playing partners wishes. Most won’t care about where you stand, but some do, which is why we mentioned it.

Players that don't stay behind the thrower is my greatest pet peeve. Often times they are looking for their disc, preplanning their shot, or just trying to rush along play. Best to stay behind and not endanger yourself or others.
One time I had a player on my card that thought it was enough to hide behind some trees for cover. My shot hit three trees, ricocheted and hit him in the back. Again, better to be safe then sorry.
