    Great video! Very concise explanations for every definition. I’m still confused as to why understable discs are recommended for beginners? Why not discs like the Maco that just flys straight? Why would I want a disc that banks right like an understable?

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  3 роки тому +25

      Thank you Jake, and good question! Newer players have a lot of difficulty throwing the disc flat and usually have poor form. The throw is a lot different than just throwing a frisbee. This often results in the disc fading early to the left if throwing RHBH. So to counteract their poor form and allow them to get some distance, a disc with more turn is very helpful, especially with faster discs. But the Mako3 is highly recommended for a first time disc because it's very neutral and allows new players to learn proper form. Anyways, we hope we've answered your question! If you have any more, feel free to ask!

    im proud that as a beginner, i started with yanking speed 14 discs. Slowly but surely i work myself down the speed classes and slowly getting more technical, after a year now, i started throwing putters and midranges, and i can bomb pretty good distance with my high speed discs and i am starting to get 180 - 200 feet with putters now :D my strongest part of my game is distance, owing to the fact i started with high speed discs.
    Yes - totally against what any1 would recommend, but i enjoy developing myself this way. This off season im gonna go hard on putt and approach, and i expect to become better that way :D

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the question! No actually, you don’t necessarily need high fade discs for sidearms. I would say a disc with a bit of fade does help, but it also just depends on your control, your skill level and the shot required. I actually throw the Mako3 and Dart for straight sidearm shots, but it takes a lot of touch and I don’t use them for distance. If however I need to get some good snap for extra disc distance, I use want a disc with a bit more fade. Hope this helps! 👍

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  4 роки тому +1

      -But yes, a cheaper plastic will mean cheaper prices. It’s not too much, usually between 5-10 dollars.
      -Most popular models are available in different plastics, but not all!
      -And I would say that most discs that are cheaper are made from cheaper plastics, but it’s not always the case.
      And just so you know, a cheaper plastic doesn’t mean it’s a worse disc. The cheaper plastics usually have more grip, and they also break-in easier. The downside is they don’t maintain the same flight path for long and they wear quicker

      One benefit from being a lefty is that you can stand with a righty in front of you and do mirror training. I loved doing that for golf, and will do it also now with discgolf :)
      And thankfully it’s the same principle, only reversed :)

  • @jakeedgell591

    So forehand makes your frisbee spin the other way which causes it to have a mirrored flight pattern, correct? Because mine seem to “fade” right at the end, not left, but I only throw forehand when I drive.

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  3 роки тому +1

      You are correct Jake! A fade RHBH throw would finish to the left and a fade RHFH would finish to the right. Hope this helps! 👍

    Is the turn and fade left vs right rated for backhand throwing and therefore would be reveresed for forehand???

      @JustDisc  Рік тому +1

    I just got a Star Mamba recently and I've gotten to where I can make it perfectly hug a hard left with my forehand, like it should be on Tokyo Drift. I wish I could get the flight on video, it's so sick what that disc can do.

      It's a great disc for so many reasons, especially in premium plastics. My friend adores his Mamba and it is his go-to distance driver. Since the disc is pretty understable, he loves to hyzer flip it!

    Flying wings are the way I describe disc fight. Flight on a wing is from the air going slower over the top than the bottom. That drag pulls the wing up and that's how birds and planes fly. A putter is like an old biplane and a fast speed driver is like a delta wing jet fighter. The putter has a more extreme curve on the wing and thus needs less air speed to generate the same amount of lift that a driver needs at higher speeds. That’s why discs will turn over when thrown too hard, because the lift is too great, and the top of the wing is lifting so much it turns the disc over top side. On the other hand, if there isn’t enough air going over the top of the disc (wing), like it isn’t throw hard enough, then it drops out of the air due to lack of lift.
    Wind is also a big factor. Wind can add lift - when it is head on it adds more lift, because there is more air over the wing. It can take lift away - when it is at your back, because it is a minus to air flow over the wing and decreases the lift.

    People don't realize that the flight numbers are for a disc that is broken in. You can actually add a positive number to the high speed turn until you do.

  • @andyd8370
    @andyd8370 4 роки тому +1

    Good info, but how were the number scales originally determined? And how are hey measured for a new disc design? Wind tunnel/robotic arm? They seem so arbitrary. I see a speed 14 has the max wing width allowed by PDGA, but why 14 and not say 10 or 15? And it seems like there are no physical constraints on the other metrics- like is it even physically possible to have a glide of 8? Or a turn of +2? This has bugged me for so long...

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  4 роки тому

      You know, you have some excellent questions. It’s funny how we understand and use this flight system, yet nobody understands why or how the values were determined. I wish I had answers for you but it’s definitely something I’d like to find out! I’m sure speaking to Innova’s manufacturing disc team would help clarify that

    When you say the "higher the negative number" you mean lower, right? As in a low turn of -5 will be more understable so it will go more right when thrown correctly. Right?

    Something strange with the fight numbers IMHO. A "high" turn is a lower number. So.. the lower the number, the higher the turn, true?

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  3 роки тому +1

      That is correct!

    • @bahaako1
      @bahaako1 3 роки тому +1

      You can think of it in a different way which might help. Remember that a disc can have a positive turn rating (+1).
      Think of the flight numbers for turn and fade as describing the disc's tendency to move to the left (for RHBH), but for different phases of the flight. Turn is for high speeds (beginning and middle of flight) and fade is for low speeds (end of flight). A negative turn then means that a disc will want to move away from the left when at higher speeds, and the positive turn of +1 means that the disc will move slightly to the left throughout the flight.
