Made me so sad. If we really want America to get healthy, we need to be more inclusive as a society. We need to make room for people who don't fit the "ideal". If you're one of those people who go off about people's weight, but you don't acknowledge that their quality of life matters, than you're just a bitch harassing this weeks target. -People will remember your ugly actions 👀

I don’t really think so. I think it’s kind of like how fast food places will advertise their salads as being the healthier choice, but when you look at the nutritional content, they are as bad as the burgers. If something is promoted as being a better option, it’s not surprising that people trying to be healthier choose it.

After losing 110 pounds, I went back to eating a normal diet of ~2000 calories a day + exercise. My weight went up about 15 pounds in about a month and a half. It was then I realized this was not a diet. This is a lifelong commitment to my health, and I will do anything to keep the gains I have accomplished more than a year and a half ago.

I would love to get an update on Yolanda. Her comment about just cutting out the drinks was on point. Many people think that losing weight will be hard, they think of all the addictive food they eat right and don't want to give them up. But, like Yolanda said: "You just start small with small goals and that adds up".

    • @LoFoSho

So true I started by cutting out all drinks like 2 or so years ago. I just stuck to water, black coffee, and celsius type energy drinks and it helped me eat better because I had energy again. I wanted to cook and learn about food. It amazing how much I've changed personally just because I started that way. I wasn't obese or anything, I just felt like doo doo. (I would eat fried food and fast food a lot) I can only imagine how crappy obese people feel. I am an advocate for starting small like that because after all it is a life style change.
(I should add that I work out 5 days a week for almost 2 years) That probably helped me get happy again too.

Yolanda Neal (chef): She speaks the truth
I have had so many people ask me how I'm losing weight. As soon as I tell them eating healthy foods (plant based diet), drinking water, and counting calories they tune out, their eyes glaze over, or they give me a look like I'm lying and not telling them the secret. Then when I say, I don't exercise, I get the side eye.
They don't want to hear it because it's not a fad quick fix and the bottom line is they do not want to or are not ready to change their lifestyle choices. They want to lose weight overnight while continuing to eat the unhealthy food or junk food they love. I let it go and move one while thinking: You won't get the results you want by continuing to do what you want and what doesn't work...make a different choice.
But then, you can't make a change until you are ready and only you know when you are really ready.

23:07 is another side of this. It's like if people are a certain amount overweight, it's viewed as negligible to lose 7% of their weight. They're like but I would still be so heavy. Actually doing that is what drives lasting changes. Yolanda had a great part showing making a healthier cole slaw or something similar that was about the vegetables and not mayonnaise. Like no one realizes that here we make vegetables into vegetable containing dishes with almost all the calories coming from unhealthy processed food products. If you remove everything but whole plant food, including removing all plant food products, you don't need to count calories with reasonable meal planning.

      Wrong
Blue Zones are areas of the world in which people live exceptionally long lives.
People Who Live in Blue Zones Eat a Diet Full of Whole Plant Foods
One thing common to Blue Zones is that those who live there primarily eat a 95% plant-based diet.
Although most groups are not strict vegetarians, they only tend to eat meat around five times per month (7Trusted Source, 8Trusted Source).
A number of studies, including one in over half a million people, have shown that avoiding meat can significantly reduce the risk of death from heart disease, cancer and a number of other different causes (9Trusted Source, 10Trusted Source).
Instead, diets in the Blue Zones are typically rich in the following:
Vegetables: They’re a great source of fiber and many different vitamins and minerals. Eating more than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer and death (11Trusted Source).
Legumes: Legumes include beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas, and they are all rich in fiber and protein. A number of studies have shown that eating legumes is associated with lower mortality (12Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source).
Whole grains: Whole grains are also rich in fiber. A high intake of whole grains can reduce blood pressure and is associated with reduced colorectal cancer and death from heart disease (15Trusted Source, 16Trusted Source, 17Trusted Source).
Nuts: Nuts are great sources of fiber, protein and polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Combined with a healthy diet, they’re associated with reduced mortality and may even help reverse metabolic syndrome (18Trusted Source, 19Trusted Source, 20Trusted Source).
There are some other dietary factors that define each of the Blue Zones.
For example, fish is often eaten in Icaria and Sardinia. It is a good source of omega-3 fats, which are important for heart and brain health (21Trusted Source).
Eating fish is associated with slower brain decline in old age and reduced heart disease (22Trusted Source, 23Trusted Source, 24Trusted Source).
      SUMMARY:
People in Blue Zones typically eat a 95% plant-based diet that’s rich in legumes, whole grains, vegetables and nuts, all of which can help reduce the risk of death.

It's interesting as well given it's been some time so there's newer research. For instance Benjamin Bikman and Robert Lustig who suggest that the insulinlevels start to raise many years before the pancreas fail to keep bloodglucose down. So obesity as such doesn't seem to be the cause of T2D the weight gain (or adding visceral fat!) is a result of insulin levels raising. But checking insulinlevel is not a typical thing to do. And a lot of people lower the triglycerides also when cutting those fast and high glucose spiking foods, especially those in fluid forms be it soda, juice and sauces like barbecue or saladressing with high sugar content.

More to the point, I'm pretty sure hat the bow-tied charlatan who said "a calorie is a calorie" is the same dingus who, when discussing 'set points', claimed that two people who weigh the same would have maintenance caloric requirements that differed by up to 20%.
Can't have it both ways. It's mathematically impossible.
In other words, the guy was dispensing broscience, but with a bow tie. The 1990s called and want their pretentious neckwear back... even Tucker Carlson got rid of his (once Jon Stewart called him on it).
Calories from different macronutrients are metabolised differently, and create different endocrine (and therefore different metabolic) responses; change the macronutrient balance enough (to the point where white fat starts to behave like brown fat) and you will get a 5-10% metabolic bump without changing your intake or your exercise.
In the 'calories in, calories out' approach, the overwhelming majority of calories OUT are not within the individual's control... they are the result of the person's basal metabolism, which changes in response to macro- and micronutrient intake.
(Almost all of the obese folks in this video will be desperately short of iodine, vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium - all of which play important metabolic roles).
I know HBO has to aim this at the median American TV viewer (i.e., a dummy), but it's irresponsible to dumb things down to the point where the advice is actually counterproductive for the genuinely obese.
With that said: people who understand that macronutrient profiles change metabolism, are *not* saying that it's open slather: they are just saying that for a given calorie content, changing the nutrient profile can alter its metabolic effect to that it causes less lipogenesis than the original diet.
If your 'ideal macronutrient' intake is still 300 calories a day too high, then the total has to come down. But it's better to eat *better* first, rather than trying to eat LESS from the get-go.
The reason for this: most obese people are malnourished (in the sense that their diet does not give them adequate amounts of key vitamins, minerals, trace elements and so forth); if you try to cut aggregate input starting from a situation of malnourishment, your battle becomes twice as hard.
      I've never been obese - I've been fatter than I would like at times, but at 6'1" and 225lb I've got a VO2Max of 46-47 (i.e., I'm fit for a 54 year old vegetarian).
Lastly - I was horrified by the lack of amenities in parts of US cities (the so-called "food desert") effect... but by the same token there have been times when the nearest fresh-food store was 20km from where I lived, and I had no car... but guess what? *I took the bus* .

I can eat a bowl of cookie dough and not have a glucose spike. Why? I’m thin and healthy. I work out. And I don’t do that all the time...or even three times a year.
The point is that if you have a healthy hormonal response, things like that don’t actually have an effect And a healthy diet that includes stuff like a serving of white rice with homemade Chinese food certainly doesn’t cause hormone did regulation.

    • @tsabanski

The entire purpose of fruit is that it is eaten. The whole idea that "juice is nature's way of getting you to eat fiber" is pretty far-out-there, but fruit does exist for the purpose of consumption. It's a plant's means of "tricking" animals into transporting seeds (through means of swallowing, intestinal carrying and fecal depositing) over large areas.
In order for the plant to successfully convince an animal to transport its seeds, it creates a sort of seed-uterus (fruit) that is full of sugars (as plants create sugars to live, while we consume sugars to live), that are palatable to animals.
I'm not exactly sure how plants know how to create things that are considered tasty to animals to become temporary seed-distributors, but it be a thing they have evolved to do.

Y’all, I wish everyone had the ability to see what food looks like when it ends up in your stomach or intestines regularly. I can see the excess oils, fat, etc and various changes to stomach acid. It is shocking! Also, instead of buying your beverages, buy the raw ingredients. Once you have to hand squeeze your orange juice juice, manually add the sugar etc, not only do you control your sugar intake and save money, but you think twice about having a second glass.

Yes, exercise takes up a lot of time and doesn't burn huge calories per time unit. BUT: The time you spend exercising is time NOT spent snacking. AND it regulates appetite. What worked best for me was keto+jogging for at least one and a half hour at a time+drinking a gallon a day. Takes a lot of dedication though.
After that much running, I had almost no appetite. I forced myself to eat for fuel and my relationship with food changed deeply.

Obviously there are times when walking isn't possible, the distance is simply too great. But I do think town and city planners should think more carefully about how people will go about their daily lives - encouraging people to walk, run, cycle and use public transport more. Not giving up this time. I thought eating less would be boring and painful. Cutting out fast foods and artificial flavours has made things as simple as salt and pepper golden again. I love food more now than I did before, the texture and the flavours, the smell and sight, everything. Learning to love food has helped me love myself. We can do it.

Let me turn you onto something even better: pepperCORNS the whole dried berry? Man, it's such a wonderful flavor, almost floral but spicy! I love using that in cooking, that and smoked paprika. Those two plus a pinch of salt and a dash of oil over veggies and roast them in the oven? Delicious. I hope you're still doing your best and well atm I am writing this!

What always intrigues me is that people always leave comments in these videos saying it is easy just to this or that or x or y or z. Do you think overweight people enjoy being overweight. It is a matter of nutrition of course, but it is also one of emotions and brain chemistry for some. finding the answer to that is entirely individual. No one size fits all solution will work. The important thing is that they keep looking for it. When they give up it is over

Food is also just an addiction.
But in principle it's as easy as "just don't do it".
But psychologically it's hard to shake an addiction.

Agreed, and as someone who is obeese I'm tired of hearing that; even from doctors. I didn't grow up overwight. In my 20s I ended up in a not too plesant situation and without even realizing it turned to food to cope. I became overweight, but not obese (180lbs give or take). Within a few more years the excess weight caused me to developa hormone condition that caused more weight gain, then I was diagnosed with pyschiatric conditions and given medication which caused even MORE weight gain making me reach about 250. Even my doctors were like, just work out and eat less carbs, even though at the time I was only eating 1200-1500 calroies and going to the gym at least 3x a week. I finally got a doctor this year who realized it was the medications and we've swapped things around. Its slow going, but after 8 years of struggling the weight it starting to come off.

And the thing about food addiction that is different than other addictions is the fact that you don't have to have a cigarette, but you have to eat. So it does make things complicated.
Is that an excuse? No. But sometimes you just have to realize that things are not easy and decide if you want to do what is necessary to achieve said outcome.

Maybe this is true but then these people shouldn't be saying they are obese because they can't afford healthy food but instead because they are addicted to fast food.
Some of the issues are self inflicted. All these fat people claim drinking soda is cheaper then water. This may be the case for buying bottled water but drinking tap water is near free.

You know as someone who struggles with alcohol, I totally empathize the kitkat idea. Everyday I buy 1 or 2 king (equivalent in Canada as 2 to 4 beers) cans of beer. When I told my colleagues about this, they joked wouldnt t
It be cheaper to by a 6 or 12 pack and let it last a few days. And I explained that, no, because I would be inclined to drink all off it. So as someone who struggles with addiction like Yolanda I completely understand chucking the other half of the kitkat out the window (and yeah, to all the naysayers out the who are all like you just quit drinking period, Im not ready yet and this works for me).

CRAVING vs HUNGER... If you're not hungry enough to eat vegetables, you're not hungry. You've just got a craving. A craving seeks to satisfy the need to self-medicate -- trying to make ourselves FEEL better (not FUEL better). What our brain may tell us we'd like to taste on our tongues may not be something the rest of our body needs.

Like Tonya, when I lost weight people asked how I was doing it. Most people's faces just fell when I told them my reduced calorie diet and better exercise plan. But a few people did listen. Find people who are doing what you want to do, find people who are also struggling and make those people part of your life. :) You need community. We all learn from example and we achieve great things when we work together.

temporary diets give temporary results. Change your lifestyle and you can change your life. and everyone should do yoga and own a hula hoop. :) I would like to argue her at 49 min. she says diet is all about restriction, ok, temp diets are, but I would like to see an overall diet change about substitution and nutrition. carrot sticks instead of chips. a person could see that as restriction, but think about it. you are now eating vitamin a and beta carotene. Less carbs that you are not planning on using anyways. Sometimes you just need to shift your perception. If you acknowledge what you are taking in nutrition wise and have at least a basic understanding of what that is and what it does, it makes diet change so much easier.

robert lustig, one of the guys who appeared in this documentary ended up saying that calorie restriction does not work if you're not severely limiting sugar and processed food. 1100kcal per day is extremely low for any human being, she will not be able to keep that pace up long term. it's hard to find the "truth" about weight loss when experts that appear in the same documentary contradict each other but i do agree with lustig, check out his videos you want to learn more.

The one thing I can say to anyone struggling with diets, there are no good and bad foods. Really its only about amount of food and energy you get from it. Eat what you like, just reasonable amount. Eat wide spectrum of food, so you have all the nutrients and move. An hour of walking can be miraculous if you really keep at it. And that's basically it, keep at it, no cheat days necessary, you don't have to starve yourself.

...The lack of accountability is insane. In the end, it comes down to yourself, your dedication, will, and discipline. Everything else is just tools you may or may not use. It is up to you. Not your food is at fault, not the environment, not your job. Just you.

To all of my obese friends out there. The answer for me was quite simple. I adopted intermittent fasting (16hrs fasting and an 8 hr window of sensible eating - 2 meals plus 1 snack - plus walking for 1/2 hrs most days) and lost over 100 lbs in 1 1/2 years. AND I HAVE KEPT IT OFF. I feel and look great and have no intention to ever being over weight again. INTERMITTENT FASTING WORKS. Plus fasting has many other positive benefits. Give IF a chance and you will LOVE your new look. If you fall off the wagon, just get back on it again and keep going. IF is very forgiving.

There are a lot of different "diets" that work as the videos say. It's just a simple calorie in and calories out. The problem for these people is that they can't stick to the diet and maintain their weight. Even though you are able to stick to intermittent fasting for years, which is quite amazing, a lot of people end up quitting and gaining everything back. These people don't need diets, but education and support groups so they can maintain a healthy weight. Anyone can choose a diet and lose weight, but its very hard to maintain it and abstain from eating things you love.
