Hi Pete, I know that I am late to the party on this video. I just received my Compadre to put in front of my Iridium and I must commend you and the Strymon team for an excellent set of offerings. I have a Volante in the chain as well. What was missing for me was something with a bit of push, but not a distortion pedal or a fuzz pedal. I watched your videos on both the Riverside and the Sunset, and believe that the Sunset will address my use cases in a wider fashion, so I placed my order today. Thank you for excellent product demos that are not about your ability and instead focus on the deliverables of the product. Sincerely appreciated.
Strymon awesomeness in a pedal, simply no need to look elsewhere, I’ve had hundreds of pedals, and nothing imo beats Strymon, the search is over lol Timeline, BigSky and Sunset,Heavenly trio, keep up the great work 🤘
One of the best pedal demonstrations I have seen, with both rhythm and lead examples demo'd for almost every possible configuration. Well done! It may be that Strymon HAS built the ultimate overdrive pedal. The flexibility and possibilities of this pedal make me think I should have three or four on my pedal board.
Lol! I think of this guy as "Professor Strymon". Other guys talk about whether the tone is Plexi, Tweed, Tubescreamer etc. Professor Strymon talks about the "gain topology".
Four months ago I commented on this video. I was impressed by how well thought out it is, AND, that Pete didn’t play too much. A pedal demo is supposed to be about the pedal, not the player. If I want to hear you play, I’ll buy your CD. What I did for real was buy was this pedal. Got it on my board. PS kudos to Sweetwater. They provide an excellent service.
Thank you Richard. It's so great to hear the positive feedback and we completely agree that Sweetwater is great! If you post any videos using your Sunset please let us know. Would love to listen :)
With a Favorite Switch you basically have a whole new bank of A, B, A&B settings. It stores everything, so any new knob or switch positions. It's like having 2 Sunset pedals with a total of 6 settings you can call up on the fly. I have no idea why they don't detail this in the demo or in the manual but it's a pretty significant feature. In short you get... A B A+B Fav A Fav B Fav A+B
This looks like the pedal the world was expecting the Riverside to be. Cant see anyone paying for the Riverside over the Sunset. This pedal just does everything from clean boost, mid gain, transparent drive to fuzz and filth. Fantastic design and amazing flexibility. I agree with chaz32 Dan will be pulling his "ecstasy" face with this one. Mick would probably still prefer a TS.
I got a riverside first. Then a sunset.. they are really different pedals and work amazing together. To me the riverside feels like a quartet of 12ax 7s with lots of fine tuning of gain and tone. The sunset feels more like a few gain pedals in one. I use the treble boost and hard modes from a to b then into riverside.. and a maxxon 808 in front it all. Its gain bliss man. Truly joyful
... it sounds so beautiful ! .... I own the Big Sky as my first Strymon pedal, I recently bought it two Frydays ago and I love it so much - I already want also this Sunset - of course , the most beautiful dream is to have a pedalboard full only with all your Strymon pedals ! ...
This is the kind of nerdery I live for. As much as I love review videos from my long-haired using-this-in-the-trench brethren, I wish EVERY pedal would give me a demo this specific, clear, teachnical, and precise, right from one of the people who invented it.
Hey Pete, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your demos. You explain everything very clearly with good examples for each feature. Your playing is short and to the point. Keep up the good work. This pedal is what I've been waiting for, for some time now. I'll be getting mine soon. The one feature that I wish it did have, would be for it to have two separate ins and outs so that you could still run each pedal individually if you wanted to. This way, for the guys that use a programmable switcher, you would have even more flexibility. Does this sound feasible or even make sense? In any case, this pedal is amazing!
Hi, Thank you so much for the compliment! Appreciate that. Unfortunately we don't discuss what is or isn't in the works, but like hearing your feedback and are always listening :)
The thing I Love about Strymon is the Units are Versatile and always give you options and Different combinations of options and this Unit just like the ones I have =FLINT ,EL CAP, DECO offers even more combinations on Gain/Drive - and the Sound is Bang on the Money, Petes Demos are fascinating stuff no stone is un turned with These products I am a Big fan … Some say they are expensive but as the old saying goes you get what you pay for and to my Ears they are Sonically Bang on and Hard to Beat if at all …Great Suff ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really like the layout of the pedal quite a bit. The "2 drives and a boost per side" format along with the order switch gives a lot of good options. Good thinking, as always!
You guys are geniouses. Just going to put that out there. Unfortunately I don't own any of your pedals (yet) but I've watched videos of pretty much all of them and I don't know any company that makes cooler, better sounding pedals. They're just incredible and you do so many neat things. Someday I'm gonna have a bunch of strymon pedals on my board. Mark my words.
Thank you so much!!! Can't wait to hear when you get your first one. Also keep an eye out on our newsletter or social media posts, because we do contests every so often and it's always worth entering.
@@reubensolly2237 it could, but they could shave off a fair bit since they’ve already done the r&d for the circuits and stuff, I’d be interested to see that, with the iridium and stuff it’d be all you need
The dog...he has a beautiful guitar, the pedal is real fun to use its multilayers that way you end up having 2 to 3 pedals into one....pretty clever Strymon...as usual
This must be the best OD pedal ever built? In terms of all analogue sound and functionality!! This is stupendous!! I'm not going to have any money after this year!! Bought the timeline and flint, got my eyes on the compressor/ boost pedal and now this!! FML!!
TC fanboy here buut YES ur right XD... except products would be much much more expensive than both my guitar, amp and all pedals i have together... squared xd.
Or if Strymon made an OD/amp sim/modeller/profiler in the size of and with the diversity of the Mobius/Timeline/BigSky, midi controllable and all that... That would probably put everyone else out of business.
about half way through this video, I started itemizing all of my drive pedals to see if I could sell them in order to get this guy. this is a dream! Am I correct in thinking that with the Fav switch and the expression input, you could have up to six "sounds" available to you?
+DKSouthpaw With a Favorite switch, you can access another set of sounds with both A and B channels. This provides you with A, B, and A+B sounds for your non-Favorite setting, and a separate set of A, B, and A+B sounds for your Favorite setting to get 6 different sounds. Then you can use an expression pedal to adjust settings for all of these sounds.
Thanks for using a real amp in the demo. Tones sound fantastic. I'm considering adding this to my board because it has midi control now. Midi is a hugely important feature to me. I would love to see midi added to the Flint and Deco. I would instantly rebuy those two if you did.
Excellent distortion pedal, has a gate too and favorite patch footswitch I plan to get. Got the Sunset yesterday to complete my virtual guitar pedal board (I use the Strymon boxes for my studio work and guitar samples as a keyboard player). Sunset drives great volume boost needed into my Timeline, followed by my Mobius for effects finally to the Big Sky reverb. I am shifting from only computer plug in guitar effects to experimenting with this external effects concept and it is working really well and sounding amazing. My analog console's stereo bus does hit an SSL compressor and API EQ which doesn't hurt either to warm up and fill out the guitar samples. But the Strymon pedals work really well in front of the mix buss processing. I hope to make a video showing this off as I have not seen anything like it on You Tube exploring what is possible with sampled guitars and Strymon pedals.
Everything you could ever want in an overdrive fuzz distortion and boost pedal Christmas is coming me hoping my wife is feeling the love for her guitar playing nerd
This one makes the 6th Strymon pedal on my board (not even counting the Timeline that I pulled off to make room for the Deco the Cloudburst and the Dig. It’s totally ruined the eclectic boutique pedal look I was trying to cultivate. At least I SOUND good now though. I might try to paint a llama or a fish on a couple of them at some point.
There is some strange magic in a fact, that when strymon makes a pedal with 2 buttons , you discover , after the purchase, that it comes with 50 pages PDF manual to describe functionality of 10 pedals embedded in it, that are operated with these two damn buttons.... It always feels like kid unwraping mysterious gifts at Christmas)). Ordered mine in less then 12 hours after watching this video. My personal consumerism record.
Both are really great for getting high gain tones in different ways, Riverside with the large amounts of gain and EQ options on tap, and Sunset with the ability to stack drives :)
Hello, awesome video, thanks a lot! I now own a Sunset and I wonder if I could select the different presets with a Strymon MultiSwitch, or if the only option is the Strymon tap favourite switch. Many thanks!!!
I just got the Riverside and am absolutely in love with it. Now this seems so amazing that I'm considering replacing it... Although I think I got the sound for my style already.
Hi Robert, I will pass that along to the team. I'm pretty sure they are planning on a video for that, but I'll confirm that it would be appreciated :) Thanks!
Strymon is definitely buzzing all around the guitar community amongst rock, blues and heavy metal players a like. I’m a huge fan of overdrive sounds and todays options are almost limitless when it comes to flavor and color (sonically). I need to grab myself a Strymon pedal for my pedal board, it’s like a birthday present to myself sort of? Lol point being these are amazing sounding pedals and are quality pedals to say the least.
Thanks for the quick reply! I had not known about John Suhr, obviously, I've been living under some huge boulders (not just rocks)! Thanks again for passing along that info!! I'm saving up for my first Strymon Big Sky. Can't wait!!
Can you control the tone knob with the expression pedal? Like gradually boost the drive effect with my foot. Trying to get some confirmation before I buy
To anyone planning on purchasing this pedal, Before you buy be warned that you cannot turn the volume all the way down if the gain is turned up past noon. If the gain is up and you turn the volume knobs all the way down and then activate either side of the pedal, there will still be a jump in volume. You cannot turn the volume knobs all the way down for no sound or for very little sound to match all your other pedals on your pedal board. Strymon says this is by design.
thanks for your answer i really love the sounds of the sunset the problem is i like the riverside to hahahaha I have the big sky the timeline and the mobius love them very much i quess i have to get them both now and make it a sun-side hahahaha thanks again
Thanks for being a supporter of Strymon. Appreciate that so much. Love the thought of sun-side :) Please share some songs or videos with us if you post any!
mr strymon :-) I own mobius timeline big sky and the sunset pedals I want to have the deco also but i think (correct me if i'm wrong) the deco has to be placed as last pedal right? But the deco has only 1 input so how do i get the stereo sound from the timeline mobius and big sky ? I can see the deco has stereo outouts. Thanks now i am going back to play with my new strymon pedal the sunset! love it
+Emanuel Assies The Deco does not HAVE to be placed last in the chain, but is recommended if you want to send that whole signal through the Tape Saturation. I would personally place Deco after Sunset => Mobius and before TimeLine => BigSky.
How much "simpler" (if it's so) is the single overdrive unit in the Sunset, compared to the Riverside? I was just thinking about getting a Riverside, for the 2 memory bank, but the Sunset is very appealing too, now.... Is there any particular thing that each pedal (Riverside and Sunset) can or can't do?
Hi Enrico, We have a blog over here that discusses the Riverside and Sunset > www.strymon.net/single-stage-multistage-gain-topologies-sunset-riverside/ Thanks :)
When designing this pedal we took every awsome and kick ass overdrive and jammed it all in one pedal. Then made it stackable so you could gorge your selves on a tonal smorgasbord till all the awsome makes you blow up or puts you in a coma. Hahahaha
Here's to hoping they come out with a Big Box Overdrive/Distortion Box like their BigSky, TimeLine, and Möbius. Those 4 paired with my midi controller and I could literally have everything I need in 4 pedals. 🤔😉 C'mon Pete and Strymon peeps... make this happen!!!
Thanks Evan for the feedback. We don't discuss what is or isn't in the works, so I can't deny nor confirm, but really appreciate hearing your thoughts :)
Hey. You think you guys could do a comparison between this pedal and the riverside? Playing same licks or progressions for each pedal. I'd love to hear cuz I know I need one of them?
Hi Strymon. Just wondering why i still hear the drive sound when i turn the level knob to zero. Izzit becoz its on a buffer mode. Or izzit a spoilt unit coz usually when u turn the volume knob to zero u would not hear anything.
Hello. I have just purchased a sunset pedal and now am rebuilding my pedal board. I already have a sunset and was just wondering your reccomendation for order. Right now my gain pedals are in order.. maxxon 808. Riverside. Then sunset.. without spending a million years with my strymons Is that a correct order in your minds? Or sunset then riverside The 808 is just a boost with a bit of hair on it for me. So always first.
All good Found a happy chain for my grind now. Maxxon od 808 into sunset then riverside.. its awesome. I mind of treat the riverside the same way as quartet of 12AX7s.. its just wonderful. Thankyou !!!! ♥️Strymon.
@@scottm121 So happy to hear that! Thank you so much for letting us know. If you ever have any other questions reach out to us at support@strymon.net :)
Question: I still hear my guitar quite clearly even when the Level knobs are at zero. There's no noticeable difference (they don't really engage) until I get to approx. the 9 o'clock position. Is this normal?
Hey guys at Strymon! Hope all is well. I am building a rig right now where I am going to have a mastermind PBC running the whole thing and will not be able to get to the sunset. Now, can I, with the Fav. or Exp. Plugs, control which side of the pedal I want to use, as well as the favorite feature?? Thanks!
Hi Justus, thanks for checking out the video! With the FAV jack, you can select a single saved preset which is comprised of either side of the pedal or both engaged (or bypassed) , however, there is no external control over toggling each side independently. You can use an expression pedal in the EXP jack to adjust any of the knobs in any direction along with an external MiniSwitch in the FAV jack to toggle the favorite setting. Please send us an email to support@strymon.net with additional details on your rig for additional more help.
My next request is a combo pedal incorporating 60s/70s style tones, Dallas Rangemaster, Vox Tone Bender, Sola Sound Tone Bender etc. Think Mick Ronson, Brian May, Jimmy Page, Marc Bolan, Tony Iommi etc.Happy to test them when you knock them out, my credit card is awaiting
It's time to think about a fuzz family pedal. And a distortion too. Maybe a big one with all the possibilities (riverside, sunset, fuzz, distortion, deco and much more) these pedal with the other three big one's from strymon makes the perfect e most versitile pedalboard. Keep on the great work you've been doing

I need to grab myself a Strymon pedal for my pedal board, it’s like a birthday present to myself sort of? Lol point being these are amazing sounding pedals and are quality pedals to say the least.
Thank you David!
Pete, awesome pedal and demo! Mind if I ask who makes the guitar that you are playing here? Can't quite make out the letters on the headstock.
In this video, Pete is playing his Suhr Classic Antique model.
Yes, you can control any one or up to all of the knobs on Sunset (in any direction) via external expression pedal.
Is that a Sonic Blue or Daphne Blue S-Style Suhr? Or some other shade?
Mr white !! You bastard you’re alive.
Incredible.
This pedal has some good tones, although nothing you can't achieve with a solid vintage Proco Rat...The drives in parallel is a cool feature.
Michael Fourie The Rat is my favorite pedal of all time and it can’t do most of what the Sunset does
question is there coming a big unit after this one wich includes riverside and sunset and for example deco or something like that?
Hi Emanuel, Unfortunately we don't discuss what is or isn't in the works. Love hearing what you'd be interested in though :) Thanks!
thanks for your answer i really love the sounds of the sunset the problem is i like the riverside to hahahaha
I have the big sky the timeline and the mobius love them very much
i quess i have to get them both now and make it a sun-side hahahaha
thanks again
Thanks for being a supporter of Strymon. Appreciate that so much. Love the thought of sun-side :) Please share some songs or videos with us if you post any!
Does it have a noise gate like the riverside? I own the riverside and I've found it very useful for my noisy bass pickups.
Yes, Sunset has the same Noise Gate feature as Riverside.
Very very versatile overdrive. As good as my old Ibanez PDS-1.
mr strymon :-)
I own mobius timeline big sky and the sunset pedals
I want to have the deco also but i think (correct me if i'm wrong) the deco has to be placed as last pedal right?
But the deco has only 1 input so how do i get the stereo sound from the timeline mobius and big sky ?
I can see the deco has stereo outouts.
Thanks now i am going back to play with my new strymon pedal the sunset!
love it
+Emanuel Assies The Deco does not HAVE to be placed last in the chain, but is recommended if you want to send that whole signal through the Tape Saturation. I would personally place Deco after Sunset => Mobius and before TimeLine => BigSky.
Whaaaaa???? Release date? :)
Sunset is available for pre-order now :)
Done. :)
Guitar for HIS Glory should I start selling all my other overdrive pedals?! 😀
Samuel Tandoh Haha. Maybe. :)
Hey guys ! I was just wondering if it would be ok for me to use one of the riffs in the demo to write a song around it !
Thanks for your answer ! :)
The Riverside is programmable with lots of patches and the sunset isn't?
Both are! You can upgrade both to be controllable via MIDI and have access to up to 300 presets when using TRS MIDI.
So the next logical step for Strymon would be a double fuzz pedal with bazillion of controls?
Uh oh ;) Nice one, my friends!
Thanks W.W
When designing this pedal we took every awsome and kick ass overdrive and jammed it all in one pedal. Then made it stackable so you could gorge your selves on a tonal smorgasbord till all the awsome makes you blow up or puts you in a coma. Hahahaha
From 1:28 to 2:25 is the Germanium, not the texas drive
Here's to hoping they come out with a Big Box Overdrive/Distortion Box like their BigSky, TimeLine, and Möbius. Those 4 paired with my midi controller and I could literally have everything I need in 4 pedals. 🤔😉 C'mon Pete and Strymon peeps... make this happen!!!
Thanks Evan for the feedback. We don't discuss what is or isn't in the works, so I can't deny nor confirm, but really appreciate hearing your thoughts :)
If you guys did that you'll for sure have my money set have all the timeline, möbius, and the big sky in sure that'll make a lot of happy customers
Hey. You think you guys could do a comparison between this pedal and the riverside? Playing same licks or progressions for each pedal. I'd love to hear cuz I know I need one of them?
Evan Hutson thrilled they released it right after I bought the riverside. Some of us are broke from gas so not going to spend $600 now on both.
Yes, yes, yes, yes and YES!
Hi Strymon. Just wondering why i still hear the drive sound when i turn the level knob to zero. Izzit becoz its on a buffer mode. Or izzit a spoilt unit coz usually when u turn the volume knob to zero u would not hear anything.
Hello, this is a part of the pedal and is normal :) if you have any more questions please email support@strymon.net
Hello. I have just purchased a sunset pedal and now am rebuilding my pedal board. I already have a sunset and was just wondering your reccomendation for order. Right now my gain pedals are in order.. maxxon 808. Riverside. Then sunset.. without spending a million years with my strymons
Is that a correct order in your minds? Or sunset then riverside
The 808 is just a boost with a bit of hair on it for me. So always first.
Hi Scott, I'm sorry I missed this question. Do you still need help with this? If so I'll get support over here to answer. Thanks!
All good
Found a happy chain for my grind now.
If you ever have any other questions reach out to us at support@strymon.net :)
this guy is the guitar version of Walter White, what a genius
Question: I still hear my guitar quite clearly even when the Level knobs are at zero.
There's no noticeable difference (they don't really engage) until I get to approx. the 9 o'clock position.
Is this normal?
Yes, this is normal. The LEVEL knob will not 100% cut out your signal when at 0.
@@strymon THANKS!
Thank you for the compliment and the feedback. We don't discuss what is or isn't in the works, but appreciate hearing your thoughts :)
