The Manta name will also make it's return slapped onto a generic crossover SUV from Opel.
The cherry on top is that they say the name was chosen due to the unexpected positive feedback they got from the Manta GSe concept, despite the fact that the Manta GSe concept is literally the polar opposite of a crossover SUV... 🤦

Like it was mentioned slighty, this was somehow the European interpretation of a pony car - smaller 4 or 6 cylinder engines with less power stock - just like GM's Opel had the GT as the "Baby Vette", or the Manta, which in its first model years looked italian, later more like a european Camaro.
It did make sense, because we have narrower roads here and much smaller, more compact cars.
So, Ford in Europe does have its own heritage. But regarding this, and also the "Mustang Mach-E", it's all nothing, but bad marketing naming cars like this.

@@racingraptor4758 Where I live it was usually called the "poor man's Mustang". The Mustang was a really expensive car in my country (Norway) back then and sold in very small numbers. It was a rare dream car that few could afford. But the Capri had some of the same, and was much more affordable. I once read about this at a local car forum. If I remember correctly the importer only sold 5 Mustangs in 1971. I also remember seeing that the AMC Javelin outsold it, as 7 of them was sold here that year.

    • @myrmeko
      @myrmeko 3 місяці тому

The Eclipse Cross also borrowed design cues from the older Eclipses. The shape of the fenders and how they are integrated into the body is taken directly from the last facelift of Eclipse 4G, the line that cuts into the side is clearly reference to the Eclipse 1G's spoiler and how it flows into a sharp point to the middle of the body, the mono-taillight has been a staple in Eclipse's design (except 3G and 4G facelift) and the way the taillight becomes the rear spoiler is just the way it was done on the Eclipse 4G pre-facelift, the rear bumper bulges out just like on the Eclipse 2G and there is one single Eclipse 3G reference which is the slope of the side windows.

It was black, red stripe down the side, and the classic almost "phone dial-esque" wheels with all of the round holes in the middle. I loved that car so much. The noise it made, the way it shook the ground when it went past, the smell, the way it looked. THAT was a Capri, and it's sl=till one of my favourite cars to this day.
This isn't a Capri. This is downright awful. Ford having an 'inoffensive' car with that name has just so happened to offend everyone, even my mother, and she's not a car person.

This gives a feeling of security. People no longer want to stand out, they believe it makes them vulnerable. And that translates everywhere in product design. Ironically, the Kinetic Design was started by the Ford iosis-concept, which was rumored to hint at a Ford Capri revival. What a disappointment the new one is compared to the hopes we had back then.

    I agree completely!
It's just another generic SUV/crossover. When every new model is just boring, doesn't have any connection to the brand in design, even annoys people with the model name - why would anybody buy this, when you can buy any other generic SUV from any brand?
Then you might as well buy chinese cars with ridiculous names, like "XPeng".
In Europe, Ford's strongest models in numbers were the Fiesta as small compact, Focus and Mondeo, whicht is the Fusion in the US, afaik. They've stopped production of all of these models now, which were they best horses in the stable.
They do sell the Mustang officially in Europe, which wasn't always the case. That's the only model they have, when customers neither want to buy a SUV or crossover, or an electric car.
Plus, they close whole production plants in Europe regionally, and people notice this.
I'd say, that Ford in Europe is officially f...d big time!
News say, they want to stick to combustion engines a little longer than expected. We'll see what will happen!
Many car manufacturers not only have a problem with bland, generics designs. They also fall, because e-mobility in general isn't as successful, as they thought it was.
Turns out, Toyota, Kia and Hyundai were right with their approach, producing what the market wants - not what governments, politics and eco-activists want.
Living costs are getting higher and higher, and they think, these really not cheap cars will sell like sliced bread.
    It's crazy!
