We all know the relationship Sonic has with 3D games, but Sonic Adventure 2 Battle holds a special place in a lot of fan's hearts. The story is absolutely ridiculous, the soundtrack is one of the BEST, and we get parallel campaigns where you can play as Shadow the Hedgehog! The horrible voice acting just adds to this game and the level design still comes across as rewarding and exploratory. Let's jump into my Sonic Adventure 2 Battle review!

Fun fact: if Jirard submitted this as a 180 Emblem speedrun, he would be 15th in the world with 22 hours. That’s insanity.
Sadly he'd need verifiable footage of those 22 hours to be submitted

Agreed. Might sound like blasphemy, but the 2D Sonics I didn't really enjoy. I liked them, they were OK, but they didn't do it for me. The 3D Sonics after this... Yeah, I think you know. SA1 I really enjoyed, but it uh... had just a few issues. SA2, However... Oh hell yes. I loved every Inch of it. I think it was my most played Gamecube title.

Dr. Eggman's theme is my favorite and imo the best theme out of SA2. I just love the rock in it. I love the rock in Tails' stage themes as well. I also liked the song where Sonic has to save Amy from Dr. Eggman and Eggman is telling Sonic to hurry up or she will die. It gave a sense of urgency and I felt like I was on a time limit even though there was no time limit. Same for Don't Stop just Go for Green Forest. I mean pretty much every track is amazing. But E.G.G.M.A.N. is my favorite
I wish this game was available on the switch. It’s my favorite Sonic game.

The scene where sonic and shadow are walking towards the cannon together and acknowledge each other while preparing for their final fight is still one of my favorite moments in gaming. You can see that they can learn to respect each other, but know that they must fight because each is doing what they believe in.
you should look at the parodies from jhett ua-cam.com/video/Nrk8sqZfsgI/v-deo.html
At least sonic tried to innovate the 3d unlike some other games that keep the same formula and play safe.
It did it very well too which just makes the later downfall of this franchise in terms of style and stories in the 2010s even more sad
I think they made sonic look more like a clown since colors heck even since free riders. I don't know if it's supposed to make sonic cooler but it really isn't.
@@Granster10 They hired clowns who openly admitted they don't care about Sonic to write the stories, they were fine with baby tier shit because dumb critics thought Sonic was taking itself too seriously just because he was a blue hedgehog

Man, this Chao Garden Simulator has a lot of weird minigame levels.
Yes and luck based. Also great rewards like the menu themes.
Still it was pretty fun raising a Chao and customizing them with the animals and enemy drops from your missions. I mean it was like raising a child that you got close to when you were not playing missions.
Creating the all-S chao was what really let you destroy the competition.
There's also an entire genetics system and everything. Poured countless hours into it back in the day
They need to bring the Chao garden back man
People started hating on this game just because it was a trend and some big youtubers told them to.
The quality of the music and content is undeniable, regardless if you like it or not.
Edit: competent doesn't mean flawless.
Edit 2: You are free to enjoy or not what you want, i don't mind it in the slightest. However your enjoyment of something is not the only thing that defines its value. Especially if a majority leans toward a positive appreciation.
I still enjoyed the game. But I'll be lying if I said that this is the best Sonic game ever.
Or maybe they just played it as an adult and realized they didn't like it as much as they did as a kid. That's what happened to me and a few others I know. My opinions aren't influenced by UA-camrs.
huntercrunch yeah, but sadly, 80% of people’s opinions are.
To be fair, replaying this as an adult made me realize how many terrible gravity glitches I just programmed my brain to unconsciously learn and correct for when I was a kid. I've watched adult friends play for the first time and they fall off of rails and fly in weird directions constantly, and they call out these awful physics flaws that were fully apparent to any outsider, but I had stopped even realizing existed. I can see why some debates would be made against this game, without the turbo-rose coloured glasses that I've developed for the game over time
They need an open world spiderman ps4 type game, it would really work with sonics move set. Fun travel and mobility and some combo system (easy to pick up but hard to master) with an engaging story and bam, great game. You could unlock costumes and gear, do fun and interesting quests, level up (which would unlock new abilities, perks, and increase stats and skills) ((also no level cap)) as you do stuff in the world by attacking enemies, movement, or destroying eggman bases, etc. The story should involve real stakes but not be edgy, maybe something like eggman has taken over an area and you are taking back the land, helping people and breaking people out of his prisons. Side quests could involve helping citizens with various tasks and things (some of which could be funny and others "serious") with a variety of mini games and such (think final fantasy 7)...I could keep going but you get it.
One last thing, ultimates are fun in games so they should give sonic a new transformation that doesn't require rings or emeralds or anything, it should give invulnerability and a damage boost along with (hyper armor?) and some new moves. The ability bar should increase as you take damage, slightly over time, when you deal damage, or when you do something stylish or all of the above.
Maybe the leveling system could give moves like sonic time (slows time), chaos control (stops time), a lock on move allowing you to hit multiple enemies at the same time (think kingdom hearts shot lock) etc.
Making mobility fun is easy, running on walls, spin dash, huge jumps, etc.
This goes without saying but we need a health bar for this game, no rings.
For me and the people who are just old enough to have missed out on proper 2d Sonic this is and will always be peek Sonic. The is game is why I love this franchise and keep coming back for more, just hopping that 3d Sonic can be this good again.
Ooooh, looks like you came back for more, yeah, yeah, yeah!
As someone who got to experience the franchise from the beginning, I agree that the Adventure titles are the absolute best. I can never settle on which one is superior because they both excell in different ways.

Great video and your content is as good as ever. Sonic Adventure 2 was my childhood as well, but I still mostly enjoy the Sonic and Shadow levels and dread the Rogue and Knuckles levels
Your not alone in that. As a kid I've seen playthroughs of this game and I never liked the knuckles and rouge sections. Now after finally playing the game myself...still don't like them, but they are more bearable
Rouge
I loved the Sonic/Shadow levels, I was ok with the Knuckles/Rouge, and I despised the Tails/Eggman.
The 2-Player racing levels added years...YEARS of replay-ability to this game between me and my cousins. We mastered every shortcut and even got somewhat decent with Amy and Metal Sonic. But Amy's constant move spamming...what a nightmare.
Yeah! Just wait a minute!
This soundtrack is my entire childhood. Love Sonic Adventure 2
Whenever you feel like slowly raging in any Sonic game, just remember that Big the Cat is a playable character in Sonic Adventure 1.
He's not very fun but he's easy if you wish to ignore his A missions
Just rapidly mash A and B on the gamecube controller and you'll be fine because Froggy is very easy to catch
Even knowing what they wrre aiming for with him, showcasing water in the Dreamcast, it's still not fun and the only gameplay style I'd alter
This video brought back SO many vivid memories of the month or two I spent trudging through getting every A rank, studying online videos and retrying them over and over to get them perfect, in order to complete this game (As well as raise the perfect Chao). I was in college at that point. After watching this video, I had the revelation that at no point, in the rest of my entire life on earth, will I ever be able to justify taking the time to put myself through that personal journey again.

Just makes me wish we got another Sonic Adventure game with more polish. THAT would be incredibly sexy. :D
And another Heroes too, what Jirard said about SA2 becoming better when you complete it? I'd say it also applies to that one, I hated it for a long time and gained new appreciation for it when trying to go for 100%
@@VonFirflirch Yeah, they aren't flawless, they have problems, so does every other game from those times, they are still good games. Yeah, I wish we could have another Adventure styled game, i think it's better than the boost, the closet we got is probably 06. I agree with you, the more you play those games, the more you like them.
The only rough start Sonic had in 3D was X-treme, 3D Blast, & R. The Adventure Games were always solid with Adventure literally being the translation of Sonic from 3K to 3D in terms of gameplay for Sonic himself. Adventure additionally reworked Tails & Knuckles gameplay to better utilize their abilities in 3D & was the logical leap forward from 3K. Adventure 2 Battle was great refining the best of what Sonic Adventure had to offer, while being its own incredible game with an extensive 2P Battle Mode. Abandoning the Adventure Formula was what led to the series downfall.
The 3D Boost Formula, Just Sonic mentality, & SoA's making the series into a parody of itself for the 2010s decade are why Sonic is the joke of the gaming industry these days. The series deserves better than the way it was mismanaged for the past decade. If anything it was the transition to 7th Gen Consoles or to Sony & Microsoft's consoles that were rough for the Blue Hedgehog, because the early 3D Games for Sonic were better than the vast majority of what came after. We can only hope Project 2021 is the return to form the series needs.
@@WaterKirby1994 True, Sonic Forces was such a letdown honestly. This game tried to have the SatAM darker atmosphere but failed in it because of having cringy jokes every second. Also the levels are super short and linear.
I prefer the Adventure style gameplay because it's more true to the classic games, in the boost games you don't get rewarded by going fast because you do it with one button.

I don't hate Arin as a person but he really has had a negative impact on the gaming community as a whole in his time on Game Grumps.
@Vox Populi But it still doesnt help just due to the fact that he IS playing it up. He sorta "poisons the well" just cause he is so believable whenever he rags on any Sonic game that you believe it and the negativity just spreads!
@Vox Populi I know he said he plays it up for humor but not everyone knows that. You can't honestly tell me you don't think people took his words on the videos seriously. Now I don't think Sonic games are perfect by any means there has definitely been some trash over the years but there has also been some truly great games (Not just the 2D games). @Vox Populi Sonic Colors, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic Generations would like to have a word with you.
Honestly the start was phenomenal it was the follow up in there next gen where things got rough.
I really miss the spirit of sonic. Sonic adventure 2 PERFECTLY encapsulates all the craziness, the up beat vibe Sonic’s world and characters give off, the dark story that mixes in with cool characters ranging from goofy to serious, it’s all amazing. People always say “too many characters,” “unnecessary dark plot,” or “3d sonic sucks” but that’s just goes to show how much of a bandwagon it is to hate on sonic. There’s a lot of characters, but this is an old series. Of course there’s going to be a lot, and even then most of them are amazing characters, like the chaotix, shadow, cream and cheese, etc. The plots from the “dark age” are dark, but they’re always really great because of how the dark serious tone blends with the brighter characters, fun dialogue, and up beat music. Nowadays, sonic tends to be nothing more than mediocre at best, and all the energy and fun has been sucked out of the franchise. I really hope this next game is something so amazing it’s comparable to sonic adventure 2. Something with rock music like this game, a cool story, fun multiple playable characters, and a world that oozes with that “shonen” vibe.
I totally agree with almost everything u said here except how are Cream and Cheese amazing characters? That part reads like satire lol
Leo Velli well think about it this way. Cream and cheese were always meant to be the “easy mode” for any sonic game she appears in, and cream is constantly known as being the broken character, especially in sonic advance 2, which plays into what she was supposed to be in terms of gameplay. When you consider their role in the franchise in terms of story and plot, while she’s still really great. Cream and cheese has a relationship to each other that’s endearing and cuddly, and then her relationships with the other characters always showcases something heartwarming and gives emphasis to other characters. Her friendship with blaze in sonic rush helping blaze open up throughout the game, her role in sonic battle shaping emerl more, and how she and her mom took gemerl’s broken body to tails to fix at the end of sonic advance 3, creating another heartwarming scene. Not to mention her sister-like relationship with Amy. She is to Amy what’s tails is to sonic.
She’s not the best character in the series, (her voice in sonic heroes oh my god it killed me) but everything that shapes cream, her character design, relationships, gameplay, personality, it makes her my #1 favorite, up there with shadow for me personally.
Edit: Jesus Christ I just realized how long of a post I made lmfao
The Sonic Series was always supposed to have that cool Shonen Vibe, the contrast of dark/mechanical with colorful, & the games were never supposed to be the way the 2010s made the series. The 1st 15 years of Sonic's Career were filled with plenty of excellent characters, while the crappy characters came during the 2010s games like Orbot, Cubot, Deadly 6, & Dodonpa. The Just Sonic mentality was a plague for the Sonic Series & the same could be said for the 2010s Decade writing & characterization. The 2010s were the worst decade for Sonic when it came to the games themselves.
Cream really needs to be made playable again in another 3D Sonic game, she's been absent from the series since Generations & she's 1 of the most popular characters in Japan. Vanilla was only ever in 3 games for GBA & DS as an extremely minor NPC, while Tikal is in a similar situation after the Adventure Games. We can only hope that the Sonic Series returns to form in the next few years, getting to play as at least 6 different characters as the normal for each game with stories that take themselves seriously. Personally I think it would be nice to have a game with 12 Playable characters split into 3 or 4 stories & 4 or 5 playstyles with the ability to raise chao.
@Xavior The Shonen Vibe that existed in the 90s & 2000s is kind of required for the Sonic Series to have a good story. The moment that vibe was taken away in 2010, the stories all became crap.
Personally i preferred the rock in SA1, more melodic and less heavy rock like in SA2.
Honestly, i think this game has more to it
Speed levels: essence of sonic
Mech levels: essence of tails
Treasure levels: essence of knuckles
They basically made the concept of sonic heroes in this game
They all are the spirit of Sonic as a series
They all respect the core idea of the franchise while having context and create something fast paced and fun with it offering variety and a chance for every character to shine, it's great
well to be fair the mech levels are the essence of gamma. still fun though
Mech levels are absolutely not the essence of Tails.
@@Kirbychu1 Tails since Sonic 2 has been solidified as a useful sidekick with a genius mind
His arc in SA1 made him a hero that could be on his own without the help of Sonic
In SA2, Tails uses his genius to transform his now dubbed plane "Cyclone" into a giant shooting machine as well as a kart
Tails uses his machine to defend himself against heavily militarised bases both on Prison Island and on the ARK
Saying that Tails being in a mech is not logical is ignoring what Tails is as character since he was introduced in my opinion, it makes sense both in character and in the context of SA2's narrative
@@maude7420 OP specifically said "the essence of Tails". It is indisputable that Tails' most iconic gameplay trait is his ability to fly with his two tails. Any gameplay style that fails to do that is consequently not "faithful" to the character. It's equivalent to not allowing Sonic to run for an entire game.
It's okay to experiment with different gameplay styles. It's fine Tails was put in the mech (Though the gameplay was very mediocre). But his gameplay in Sonic Adventure is no doubt much more faithful to the character.

As a huge Sonic fan since 1994 this is definitely one of my all time favorite games next to Sonic 3 and Knuckles and I still go back and visit this game often...and let's not forget the precious Chao Garden which I spent hours upon hours in! It will never get old to me! 💙
I loved this game as a kid. I haven't played it in years but I still remember it fondly.
Awesome video, thank you for making it.
Modern Sonic should have kept the Soap Shoes. He just looks right with them on.
Nah they aren’t as iconic as his regular shoes
It was like a sponsorship deal. Sega didn’t have the rights for those shoes anymore after this game I guess. Though I agree they really suit his “modern” appearance. The classic shoes on modern sonic don’t look as good.
Leo Velli I think the soup shoes were in Sonic Forces for the avatar
But yeah there should be an option for soap shoes
The king Ankylosaurus There was soap shoes in sonic Forces.
Can we all appreciate the person who wrote this game? Shiro Maekawa is the one responsible for writing almost every Sonic game from this game to Black Knight. He's the one who made these stories so cool compared to what stories we got in the 2010s.

It's incredibly refreshing to hear someone's genuine and honest opinions on what makes such a divisive game so great without simply bashing it blindly for the sake of "haha, Sonic bad".
Thank you so much for truly understanding Sonic, Jirard.
Xavior I completely agree
@Vox Populi No but considering your other comments people aren't allowed to like things without having bad taste
Seriously, this game is so fun to 100%, even in the non-sonic levels, the A ranks are so satisfying to go through.
Sonic/Shadow are still the best stages tho
@@donathan2933 yeah, in my opinion id rank it.
1. Sonic
2. Shadow
3. Eggman
4. Knuckles
5. Tails
6. Rouge
@@catcraze8673 Lmao that ranking is so similar too mine, I thought I was the only one who hated Rouges stages the most. I prefer Knuckles over Eggman but Eggmans stages are still great. All of em are, except for Rouge
@@donathan2933 yeah i prefer eggman over knuckles stages because it's so fun just locking on to so many things in his stages and blasting them away and getting like over 30k points in each stage is really fun. I don't like Tails stages nearly as much as Eggmans cause i feel like tails has more annoying sections in his stages (especially mission street).
@@catcraze8673 I agree. You hate Rouge stages the most right? Rouge is the only character I genuinely hate playing in this game. I never replayed her stages again
I can't believe how long it's been since I've played this game. Watching this video has made me unbelievably nostalgic to play this. I can't imagine how many hours I put in on my gamecube when I was like 8-9 years old. I cried like a BABY because one time my older brother to be mean deleted the save file on this game. Thank you for making this video, there was so much to do in this game and now I realllly want to play it again! And who could forgot knuckles' famous WUDAWUDAWUDA when digging
I ain't gon' let it get to me, down at pumpkin hill I've got to find my destiny
Anyone else want a spin off game based off the Chao Garden? With more Chao forms, clothing, and mini games.
I don't think the Chao Garden would have work unless it's connected to a main game in some way, I could see an app where you can store and transfer your Chao between games, but if you're not connecting it to a main game then all you get is the monotony portion of the Chao Garden.
It's meant to be a side activity, something you can always go back to if the main game is becoming a little boring, and every time you come back to it, you'll get more Chaos Drives, Animals, rings, etc, so you always feel rewarded.
The Chao Garden would need a serious overhaul to work on it's own.
@@SSL_2004 Think if they made it like animal crossing where not only you raise unique chaos but you also have base that you can decorate in anyway you want.
All the levels that would be the story can be the mini games to find animal's/drives/rings for the chaos. The way to make it more interesting is to have optional online multiplayer where people can compete for prizes along side what ever else they find in the level.
The chaos will be the main game with most of the customizations going towards them ,their living area, and your base.
I'm sure there are some things that can be added to this idea but I think it's solid enough for at least a 1st attempt.
The Completionist: My favorite levels are the treasure hunting levels.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is still the King in the series.
I wouldn't say that. It's still an good game. But I don't know if I would call it the " king of the series ".
Unless you want to consider Sonic Adventure DX the King of the series, it's Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. The Sonic Series has never been able to surpass these 2 games in nearly 2 Decades. The "Just Sonic" mentality can never possibly produce a game that's better than Sonic Adventure or its amazing sequel. 3D Boost will never be better than Sonic's (& Shadow's) gameplay in the Adventure Games. Only an Adventure Game can hope to dethrone the Adventure games for best game in the Sonic Series & even then that may not be enough.
@@WaterKirby1994 I agree that SA2 is the king, it is my favourite Sonic game after all, but I do think Generations was on a similar level.
I much prefer adventure games to boost games, but Generations was done so well that I respect anyone who claims it to be the king of the series.
SA2's got that story and adventure gameplay though, so it's king in my eyes haha
@@WaterKirby1994 Same could be said for S3&K too. Adventure is my preferred style but I'll be damned if S3&K isn't the best 2D platformer ever made.
@Xavior Generations was too lackluster to be considered "king", there wasn't story, you only played as 2 Sonics, & the level selection wasn't that good. I didn't think we were counting mods, which is the only thing Generations really has going for it that can make it rival the Adventure games. You fail to understand Generations is only fantastic thanks to the work of its modding community.
I agree that 3K & Mania were great, although I just feel they aren't as good as the Adventure games. I want a Sonic game that can surpass them in quality, although I have doubts we can ever get anything better than the Adventure Games. Sega & Sonic Team making all the wrong choices after 06 is why I don't think we'll ever see the Adventure Duology dethroned as the kings of this series.

This guy speaks the truth, everything he said about this game is how I feel, I love it, even for me treasure hunting levels are actually my favorite.
I have 7,000 hours on this game, and still have my original file on my original memory card for my GameCube. Four GameCubes, and 19 years later after 100 percent'ing everything, this is STILL my favourite Sonic title and absolutely no one can tell me it's not great.
I used to say that this game was my favorite Sonic game solely because of nostalgia, but after replaying it fully a handful of times throughout my life, I can say that was a lie. It's a damn good Sonic game with so much character that it's hard not to adore it. It's my favorite game in general now.
Sonic Team, bring back the Chao garden, or forget everything I said.
Best first level in video game history. Change my mind.

My favorite game of all time. Chao Gardens need to return!
Man this game was a staple of my childhood. I played this game hours on end especially the Chao Garden portion. My favorite boss was King Boom Boo and I always cried at the end when Shadow sacrificed himself 😭
This game will always be my favorite sonic game. I put countless hours into it just playing it over and over and messing around with the chao garden. Good memories
This was and still is my favorite 3D Sonic game hands down, I’m glad that you still love it just as much as I still do
This game has such a special place in my heart for being what I grew up with. The stages, the music, the chao garden... I just love it so much.
A crazy task to complete the entire damn thing. Starts to feel like Mario 64 doing all the levels challenges, except it was even more vague and hopeless without a guide.
I did spend too much time in chao garden, while running Metal Harbor and City Escape all the time.
Btw Jirard - I think you should include some audio video from clips once in a while! The ost choices are great, but not hearing a sound effect in a game review is surprising.. you put in all that time and effort, let some of your little clips live in infamy.

Honestly, when I was first playing Sonic Adventure 2 when raising my Chao I had one that didn't have perfect stats, but it managed to win every single competition on its own.
I honestly love a lot of aspects of this game. I wish it was more refined in future games rather than the bizarre direction they took them
