I always find it interesting that mechless Tails seems so fully gameplay-functional despite existing only for the Chao Garden. It makes me wonder if at some point in development they were going to have mechless Tails be playable in normal gameplay. Maybe it would have been a one off 'mini-game' stage (eg. Instead of racing to get the president, Tails would have some rooftop flying/platforming gameplay) but they scrapped the idea because they wanted to keep Hero and Dark as parallel as possible and there was no way to have a similar mini-game for Dark story. Or maybe in very early development Tails didn't have a mech at all because they hadn't yet committed to the idea that Hero and Dark characters would be equivalent counterparts to each other (eg. Like the first Sonic Adventure game had completely distinct gameplay for all 6 characters) but as they struggled to figure out how to make Sonic and Terios/Shadow have distinct gameplay they came up with the idea of making the two sides mirror each other, but then that also basically forced Tails into a mech to be Eggman's counterpart.
I'm sure alot of that is correct. They maybe also used Sonic Adventure 1's tails and just made some changes to make him more chao garden friendly. I wish we got to use mechless tails more though.
apparently early in development there were only plans for Sonic, Knuckles and Eggman stages to be playable at all - Shadow, Tails, and Rouge were added in later (which honestly shows a little bit but i digress) as for why mechless tails seems so much more complete, yeah it's probably just because they could base him off of SA1's version of tails somewhat. (Funny enough there is actually a playable mechless Eggman as well as Tikal in the code of SA1, though it seems they exist more due to how cutscenes in that game are controlled rather than evidence of anything too exciting being planned)
Thats how alot of these start, just with an interesting concept, and then we end up realizing how good it actually is when we try it out. Of course sometimes we try it and it ends up not being very interesting at all.
16:01 I think Eggman is loading in with Rouge's stats, so he has low health. Combine that with Tails' upgraded canon, and you've got a very easy boss! Also, I love videos like these, good job! EDIT: 18:06, I think since there's a two-player mech stage themed after Mission Street/Radical Highway, it could have something to do with that. Personally I'd do it a different way, but maybe the game's structure forced their hand.
Yeah that might be whats happening. In previous videos characters like knuckles and shadow have upgraded health, so it makes sense that it would go both ways.

The invisible walls seems to be correlated with spots that have a high degree of automation, I.e. The game briefly takes control of the character and camera. So it seems like those event triggers some how turn into walls for mech characters. Maybe they are technically invisible walls for EVERYONE but the automation is allowed to ignore walls so for every other character when you hit the automation trigger the automation will get you past the invisible wall, but that automation doesn't work for mech characters due to fundamental differences in how they are coded (/informed-speculation)
You are correct, but I want to add that it's most likely caused by the fact that mech characters have a larger hitbox. My theory is that they get stuck in a tunnel made of invisible walls. Modding the game to see collision boxes should confirm this. I have experience in programming and game design, and this explanation is the first thing that crossed my mind.
@@EpicDuskkI feel like it boils down to either larger hitboxes or the difference in weight. Dash panels and springs have already been proven to be more powerful in mech stages to make up for the mechs being heavier and slower, so perhaps the walls have a property that allow passing through them at a certain speed that the mechs just can't achieve with the base dash panel speed.
My guess as to the reason for the invisible walls, with zero technical knowledge of SA2, is that they probably reused a trigger for the mech characters, but made it act as an invisible wall instead.
i think the mechs just have weird physics in general, which i wouldn't be surprised was due to them trying to prevent easy exploits during development. One infamous example of the weird physics being how you'll drop like a rock if you hover and scrape against a solid object - likely to prevent you from easily flying up a slight incline or something, but really obnoxious during regular play especially when trying to play fast. Edit: also considering the mechs get different launch heights from (non-scripted) springs it makes me wonder if there was some consideration given to playing characters in stages not made exclusively for them, but was probably dropped given what a pain that'd be to fix without being jank as hell.

I think the reason mechs move faster up hills is cause they have the lowest default running speed with no mechanic such as the spindash or a punch to increase their forward momentum, the devs gave them that massive speed boost because they wouldnt be able to get up hills otherwise given their low default speed. Also I am pretty sure the invisible walls in City Escape are there for everybody, they are there to prevent the player from jumping over the dash panels. Not sure on this but I think that is the case. Anyways great video, keep up the good work!
I dont think thats it because no other slopes give them a speed boost. Only the Green Forest/White Jungle ones. They have slopes even in their vanilla levels, and never get a speed boost. regarding the internet connection required, it's a text box from when the game was on dreamcast since there was internet capability. I imagine it popped up because you managed to create an error that matched it with your speed going uphill with the sliding he was doing and with the angle he was at. no clue if that's actually why, but it looks like the game was trying to process something as soon as he started sliding, which I personally don't recall seeing mech tails do. TL;DR I think you caused the game to register an error, and something about what you were doing made it read a code that would normally be obsolete
In green forest, you actually spawn in front of the wall in the Dreamcast version of SA2,so you can go down the slope easily.I don't know if I ever said this but I play on Dreamcast and don't have much idea about the GameCube/PC one lmao
I think Crazy gadget can be done as mechless tails if you clip through the back fence at the start of the level by using omochoa. Then you just following the same path with rouge. I've done it using an action replay code on GC but I haven't tried it on the pc version yet.
Thats something I might do later! It might be fun to revisit these challenges maybe a few months from now, update them with the levels we've later discovered are actually possible, and try to do all the bonus stages.

It works in most cases, in alot of them it crashes the game still. I definitely wanna go back and see if any of the characters can beat the other ones though, its interesting to see!
The challenge with that is literally every possible level will just be flying out of bounds and going to the end. Mechless tails doesn't have a whole lot to show off, he's kind of a one trick pony. That said I'll probably still end up making that a video just because these do so well and plenty of people have asked it despite me thinking it wont be as entertaining without a bunch of cool stuff to show off. In the meantime I have other tails videos! My favorite one is the mod that lets him fly the plane.
@@EpicDuskk True, but hey, could still be fun to see how much of the levels could be done "on the ground", or even if they can be beaten without something like an infinite rings cheat!
We dont have control of tails for the first few seconds, so we have no way of getting mechless tails high enough to get out of bounds. The invisible wall goes up pretty high. I meant to include a clip of mechless tails trying, but i guess I forgot.
I like the mech stages and treasure stages, I do wish they would be a bit more creative with the levels though. It would be fun to do a platforming level as rouge/knuckles that could utilize their unique moveset for something other then hunting. For tails all they had to do was let us use red tails outside of multiplayer and that would be the most fun character easily lol
This was so much fun to watch. Not sure why you got the Internet Error though. Very silly. I have a request. So at the end of Cannon's Core when you're Sonic sliding to the end, and you're presumably at the part where you fight the Biolizard, is that area a fully function area or is it a 2D plane? I'm curious what a closer look at that area looks like beyond the Shadow fight and cutscenes. Thanks for making fun content as always!
Yeah Im considering doing that actually! I dont wanna do a run thats too similar, but using the new tricks mods for tails and amy might be worth it. Im not sure if Ill do them in this same style going through each level, or if I wanna try something different, but either way i definitely wanna do some kind of video for those mods. I also wanna do a mechless eggman one because I think it would be silly.

I think it might've been interesting to see if the tails/eggman stages could be completed w/ the no-mech tails... Probably couldn't have been, but would've been funny/informative to see the attempt. Still, good video :D
Thats not a bad idea, maybe ill do that in another video!
your content is so good bro, I'm loving these videos
Im glad you're liking them!
The internet connection error usually happens when Steam goes offline. Happened to me recently because the Steam servers had issues.
whenever i see your challenge videos it makes me wanna do some on my own cause they're honestly very fun :D
You should! And maybe you'll figure out somethings possible that I didn't think was!
THAT EGGMAN ALTERNATE OUTFIT JOKE HAD ME LAUGHING FOR LIKE TEN MINUTES STRAIGHT AHAHAHAH
I remember doing this challenge myself, though I started from a fresh save file so I couldn't hover in City Escape.
I was able to beat King Boom Boo, though. You can just barely hit him with a Propeller Punch in shadow form.
Yeah a few comments mentioned you actually! Im shocked king boom boo was possible! Did you beat city escape without gliding? I have to check out your video when im home from work!
@@EpicDuskk I just swapped to Mechless Tails, finished the skateboard section legit, then hovered past the GUN Truck.
I wasn't prioritising any one Tails; I just wanted it to show Tails' mug on the life counter.
19:47
Tails can be more powerful than Sonic if he just stepped out of Sonic's shadow.
hopefully after Frontiers they start giving Tails his mech back
Id be fine with mechless tails, and just make eggman mech playable again
I get that “An internet connection is required” notification all the time when I play SA2 on my steam deck and it seems to go away when I disable my internet. Frankly I wonder if there is some kind of unused feature in the steam version of the game.
Probably the leaderboards. Ive gotten it a few more times since this video. So weird how its never happened before, I have like 500 hours on this lol
I got that "Internet connection is required" popup too but during Final Rush a few years ago. Not sure what it is, either.
Clearly we need an internet connection lol
im like the sea bear with the circle when u mentioned the 3 emerald mod
Being there on stream was so fun.
seeing tails do so many emerald shards was so surreal
All these characters being able to hunt the emeralds makes knuckles not seem so important lmao
@@EpicDuskk agreed lol
@EpicDusk But he’s the protector of the Emeralds and gems!
@@___________0Z0X He sure didnt look like it when he broke the master emerald
@@EpicDuskk what do you mean? I thought he did a “bang up” job.😂
I wonder if the Pause Buffer Jump works for the GameCube? I always have difficulty achieving it
It does if Im remembering correctly. The position of the buttons might make it harder a little bit
Do you think you would ever do a full Mechless Tails run through?
Probably not the regular mechless tails since thats gonna just be "Fly out of bounds and go to the end" for every level, but theres a mod that gives him back his Sonic Adventure 1 abilities and I think at some point ill do a run with that! Amy has one too I was probably gonna do next. And then Mechless Eggman if im feeling a little silly.
After those 3 Idk if there will be any more characters to do that wouldnt be too similar to another one, but ill keep my eyes open for other ideas. Thankfully theres a bunch of other mods to try out for this game so Im not running out of ideas anytime soon!
4:21-6:40 Wow I didn't even know that on an incline that Tails with the red tornado will fly upwards while jet boosting it seems to be a precursor to how the Tornado 2 is in Sonic Frontiers Final Horizon luhmayo of course 8:59p.m. 4/18/2024
im glad i was apart of the stream
I'm glad you were too!
Why did you need to fly past everything in Final Rush? Was there an obstacle that made traversing the level normally impossible?
@@Ultimaximus He cant grind rails which is the main issue, but since the level is so vertical, he can simply fly from platform to platform. It just isnt very much of a challenge. I suppose he may have had trouble breaking the boxes on the floor that lead to the next areas but again his solution would be to just fly around it. Theres no unique challenge he faces with the level which is why I glossed over it since him just flying through it wasnt interesting.
I get an error "an internet connection is required" all the time when I play the game. Usually, the message goes away when I hit a. I can continue playing afterwards, but it removes the sound,, so I have to pause and unpause to get the sound back.
Yeah since getting this one its happened two more times. Its so weird
I didn't actually know the secret costumes had any real difference aside from the skin
In most cases it only affects the special attacks they get, not the gameplay itself. Tails and eggman are different
technically there is a way to fall in to the void in security hall you just have to land on the fans right
9:05 nice dance moves eggman 👍
I like how you're basically a cop killer in this game.
25:00 wait a second... this is just Mario Galaxy!
The internet connection error is theorised to be the game's way of checking its license and failing to do so properly, at least that's what I've heard
The audacity. I own this game on Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, PS3, AND Steam. I absolutely have the license 😂
What about the mech stages, but with mechless Tails?
regarding the internet connection required, it's a text box from when the game was on dreamcast since there was internet capability.
22:50 looks like Yūji Naka is coming to wasted you :D
Oh hey I've done something simular at Radical Highway but I only did *without* using his mech.
In green forest, you actually spawn in front of the wall in the Dreamcast version of SA2,so you can go down the slope easily.I don't know if I ever said this but I play on Dreamcast and don't have much idea about the GameCube/PC one lmao
For White jungle, you spawn on a platform high above the starting point which... why does it even exist?
I’m amazed tails was able to do so much too, wow
I think tails is hitting invisible walls is because his hitbox is too big and he can't get trough these places
I think Crazy gadget can be done as mechless tails if you clip through the back fence at the start of the level by using omochoa. Then you just following the same path with rouge. I've done it using an action replay code on GC but I haven't tried it on the pc version yet.
Ill give it a try and update if it works!
But how many of the extra missions can you do as everyone?
Thats something I might do later! It might be fun to revisit these challenges maybe a few months from now, update them with the levels we've later discovered are actually possible, and try to do all the bonus stages.
Dr. Rank beat the King Boom Boo boss with mech tails!
Thats so awesome, now we just gotta beat crazy gadget somehow and hes got the game in the bag 😎
15:55 : I won't explain it all to you to save you time, but Chaos 0 is the "Gardian God of the Chao" you encounter for the First Time in Sonic Adventure 1 (even if reappearing after that). Those Enemies in Sonic Adventure 2 & Sonic Adventure 2 Battle are "copies" (to make it short) of Chaos 0, called Artificial Chaos, created by Doctor Gerald Robotnik to defend the A.R.K. Colony on behalf of G.U.N. (again, to make it short). There's 5 Types of Artificial Chaos and this one is call P-1.
To resume, P-1 isn't Chaos, specially not Chaos 0. Hope it helps.
Can someone explain Red Tails to me? I don't remember this mechanic very much.
@@tomnuke9122 Hes an alternative outfit you can unlock for multiplayer mode by getting all A ranks in tails stages. Each character has an alt outfit you can unlock for multiplayer and it changes how they play. For tails it puts him in the red tornado which makes him move really fast. It doesnt do much for multiplayer mode, but if we mod him into single player its incredibly busted.
@@EpicDuskk Oh wow, that's nuts. I thought only the Chao Walker had that ability. Fascinating! I love your content and style of humor by the way. Keep up the quality uploads.
Wait. They figured out how to fight the actual characters in their rival fights!? That may open up some possibilities
It works in most cases, in alot of them it crashes the game still. I definitely wanna go back and see if any of the characters can beat the other ones though, its interesting to see!
Can you do no mech tails for the whole game?
The challenge with that is literally every possible level will just be flying out of bounds and going to the end. Mechless tails doesn't have a whole lot to show off, he's kind of a one trick pony. That said I'll probably still end up making that a video just because these do so well and plenty of people have asked it despite me thinking it wont be as entertaining without a bunch of cool stuff to show off.
In the meantime I have other tails videos! My favorite one is the mod that lets him fly the plane.
How Do I Use Red Tails in Regular Levels???
Had no idea tails red outfit was so fast lmao
He be ZOOMIN
You should do some kind of video with the Klonoa mod for SADX! Not sure what.
How are you able to start a specific boss fight and section of cannon's core?
For bosses I use a mod called stage select bosses. For cannons core I use the debug menu in the mod manager.
Eggman without mech would just be to easy
Yeah hes too powerful. His slap attack would 1 shot every boss lmao
Red tails is to good
Egg man was so surprised about shovel claws his back broke
Red Tails is the real ultimate life form
No plans to see if Super Sonic/Super Shadow can beat the game?
Maybe! That could be a fun to see, but every level would be "fly to the finish" lol.
@@EpicDuskk True, but hey, could still be fun to see how much of the levels could be done "on the ground", or even if they can be beaten without something like an infinite rings cheat!
16:29 You used both mechs, but what about Mechless Tails? You said at 8:21 that Mechless can fly as Long as he can (if there is no hidden ceiling)
We dont have control of tails for the first few seconds, so we have no way of getting mechless tails high enough to get out of bounds. The invisible wall goes up pretty high. I meant to include a clip of mechless tails trying, but i guess I forgot.
@@EpicDuskk okay, thanks for telling me.
@@Ketchup_Sussy Of course! I respond to every comment
I've always hated the mech stages specially tails but seeing him completing almost every level is insane
👏
I like the mech stages and treasure stages, I do wish they would be a bit more creative with the levels though. It would be fun to do a platforming level as rouge/knuckles that could utilize their unique moveset for something other then hunting. For tails all they had to do was let us use red tails outside of multiplayer and that would be the most fun character easily lol
SAME!! I remember as a kid I loved playing as Tails in Adventure 1, and then be super disappointed having him in a mech in Adventure 2
Just a 2D background sadly. I was curious about that too and explored it off camera but its just a backdrop.
@@EpicDuskk Darn. Still cool tho. Thank you! c:
whens "can you beat sa2 using only coldsteel"?
Nothing personnel kid
I am the eggman I broke my back sage get me my pills
You should sequel this with the Tails mod that makes the mechless form like SA1, or the mod that gives Amy a new moveset
About the internet connection, idk why but it appears to me frequently (and my internet never falls, and you can play the game offline) so I think is just a thing ported from the gamecube that isnt used anymore.
When it happens to me, the music stop playing after i hit ok, but if I pause and unpause the game, it turns back to normal
Go figure 🤷
Yeah the music stopped for me too and fixed itself like you described. Its weird
Maybe tails moves up slants faster is because be was designed for different types of levels
I doubt it because its only the green forest hills. Other hills slow him down. City escape hills even stop him
I see SA2 content, I click. Simple.
Me for real
You can technically nuzlocke this game, thanks to mods.
Chao garden nuzlock would make chat go crazy when I gotta delete chao 😂

19:18 all the loops are scripted events
I guess I could have worded it better, what I meant was that loop is scripted to always start from be beginning if we touch it anywhere.
