Some games attract one group of people or another, but TF2 seems to be able to draw all the extremes of humanity and everything in between to a seemingly consistent degree. I love this game.
I think that the fact that there are so many different kinds of people who should be totally incompatible with each other, and they can even work together on a team efficiently sometimes, in TF2 is a testament to its greatness
It's why I never votekick for people's opinions or what they say. It's much more funny hearing two people with polar opposite viewpoints duking it out than kicking one of them and ruining the fun.

While the mercs are obviously characters; people still project themselves into them, and Pyro is literally the best one for customization. Also Community Servers may allow mods, which causal is locked on sv_pure 1.

There is a mod that changes your charachter into female. I've seen it before That's probably what they did
