Love Seventh Generation & Dr.Bronner's as well!
+HealthyGroceryGirl ( :
Thanks again..especially with the hand sanitizer. Also thank you for the links to each product it's very helpful.
+Lisa G You're welcome! Glad to help ( :
Really love your videos! It's great to know about the website, which I've not heard of. Also, enjoying everyone's tips!
+Beth Ann Adams Aww thanks! ( :
I love the skin deep app for the smart phone. I take it to the store. Very helpful.
+Karen Carlson Oh yes!
Thank you so much. I am finally getting my act together and going green and making better choices. I didn't know about ewg and just looked. Wow thank goodness I'm making changes bc almost all the products in my house are D-F
Glad to hear it helped you!
Ive really been loving Biokleen laundry detergent, planet dish soap, seventh generation toilet bowl cleaner and seventh gen dish detergent too!
+Charlotte Sinasky Nader Awesome, thanks for sharing!
Great video
+Velvet Lox Thanks!
What I love about your videos is that you are so down to earth! A lot of green/vegan bloggers put pressure on their viewers and act like there is only one right way of doing things, but you are really honest and understanding that sometimes exceptions can be made. I really enjoyed you sharing your initial struggle with buying products and feeling like you weren't being green enough. I had this struggle recently after doing no poo for nearly 3 years, I've started using organic shampoo and felt insanely guilty about it. Why? I don't know. Anyway, thanks for sharing a great video and another aspect of your very honest journey :)
+woodstock72388 Aww thanks! I never want to have my viewers feel pressure to follow my tips, just want to share what works for me and they can take what they would like to try. Glad it comes off that way. ( : As for the no poo, I can relate that's how I felt when I stopped doing it as well. But life goes on right? He he. (:
Hi Ashley - I'm pretty new to UA-cam and have been enjoying your videos. Thanks for all of the great tips! I, too, do a combination of home made and store bought cleaners and I definitely want to try the wool dryer balls you recommended. I use vinegar in place of fabric softener, and it does help, but we still have occasional static issues. I agree that we have to give ourselves a little grace when it comes to being green. You should feel great about all the steps you've taken and all the changes you've inspired in others! -Adrienne
+A Greenish Life Thanks for your support, sounds like we've got a lot in common with our green-ness! ( :
Have you ever used sodium percarbonate? It's totally green, and safe to use, also cleans every existing stain!
Please make a video of what you recommend for home smells - essential oils, candles, etc.
+reflex6251 I don't use much, just a diffuser if anything...ua-cam.com/video/jrOdzFxYch8/v-deo.html ( :
I really like the honest company laundry detergent pods and their oxy boost pods for my whites I think they work really well! I also use the ecover non clorine bleach for my whites that works really well too!
+Karen Isales Thanks for sharing, I'll check them out! ( :
I am going to attempt to make my own laundry detergent I've seen different ingredients made for laundry detergent that seems like might be worth a try
+Jodi Michaels Best of luck!
I have been using Nellies detergent and their brightener for several months and love both! I'd used other natural ones and made my own as well and was never pleased with how my laundry came out. I used white vinegar as a softener.
+Esther Sigrist Interesting, thanks for sharing! ( :
I use Ecos for laundry soap, and it works great. It is plant-based and doesn't have dyes or formaldehyde. Free of 1,4-dioxanes as well, is biodegradable, and not tested on animals.
+Eun Young Santos Cool, thanks for sharing!
I use white vinegar in the rinse cycle. I don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets I hang my clothes on a clothesline. Sort your colors on your clothes. It will help with stains and colors will look better. Dark colors only and then light colors and then a white separate
I do not wash towels or wash Rags with are clothes.
I use honest laundry detergent (4 in1) pods, and babyganics odor and stain remover for clothes. I double up on stain removers on the baby's items, like her bibs, cloth napkins, and washcloths.
+softfloral tampa Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
+Lauren A You're welcome!
Diy glass/mirror cleaner: 1tbsp cornstarch 1c white vinegar 1c water. Have you ever checked out norwex. It's a completely all natural way to clean with just water. You never have to make or buy cleaners again. For laundry detergent we currently use my green refills, which I believe is a fairly new company.
+KatelynGFamily Awesome, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing. We love Dr. Bronner's as well for body and hand soap. I also love Seventh Generation. Their powdered laundry soap got an A on EWG. I have used the liquid before and it worked comparable to other "nasty" brands. I have also made my own and I feel that my clothes do not come as clean. I have tried a few different combinations as well. I am looking into wool dryer balls as well.
+BuggyandBubbasMama Awesome, thanks for sharing!
For window/mirrors try adding a TBS of cornstarch with your water and vinegar mix :) I'm sure tapioca starch would work as well.
Thanks! ( :
you should look into vinager for washing clothes, i heard something about it being good for preventing colour fading
+Jenny ! ( :
Have you ever tried Castile soap for a toilet cleaner? I use Dr Bronners peppermint, squirt a little in and scrub and I love the smell and how clean it makes the toilet
+LaurenHammes Oh that's a great idea...probably just as effective I would say? I'll keep that in mind next time I run out and see if gets them clean. Thanks for sharing! ( :
Hay Ashley, love the video. I use white vinegar to clean the toilet and mirrors in my house and I think you will probably find the fact that it is supposed to help whiten your whites in the washing machine really useful.
+Taylor Ebbs Cool, thanks for sharing what you use!
Thanks for your video
+Galan973 You're welcome! I used to use Molly's as well. I like them too! Thanks for sharing. ( :
***** Now I am curious to know why you stopped using them? :D
Can you please do a video about Nebulizing diffusers?
Love this! Super helpful. Have you considered using castile soap for laundry detergent? I use the lavender castile soap and that's been working so well for us. My whites are doing great so far. :) I was using the crystal wash laundry spears, which I loved, but my husband asked me to use soap instead. He's still getting used to the natural alternatives and hasn't been keen on everything. ;)
+Samantha Lindsey Interesting, thanks for sharing!
thanks for the great tips. i will try especially your homemade recipes! we also use nuts for washing our clothes. you don't actually have to use as many. you can break /smash them with your hands before putting them in the bag or afterwards using a glass bottle or something like that. (if there are kernels inside the nuts that you buy you want to remove them) This way more saponin (the soap like component) from the nut can get into the water/clothes and you can use 2 or 3 nuts. You can also use the same nuts again if the washing temperature wasn't that high or add another one if you like.
sorry for my english and green greetings from germany! :D
+tim koch Hello in Germany! Thanks for your Eco nuts tips! Will have to try that with mine. ( :
I just ordered a product called Nellie's natural formula laundry detergent from HSN. Did numerous demonstrations showingvthat it is pure and doesn't leave any residue on the clothes. Havent tried it, but it sounded good. Cost $40.00 for 350 loads. No filkers, only use a very small amount of b the powder. Hope this helps. I love all your videos!
+Donna Langdon Thanks for sharing, I'll have to check it out. ( :
Great video. I'd love to know what other people are using for laundry. I don't find any of the Eco laundry cleaners work and don't get stains out. I've tried quite a few stain removers too and haven't found a good one yet.
I know right. I'm at the point where I'm tempted to go back to traditional detergent brands but their "eco-friendly version" to see if that will help as I've lost so much good clothing due to color fading, whites especially. Ugh. Let me know if you find anything good!
You look very beautiful Ashley. Maybe you can do an updated video on your supplements some day soon :) You can try using baking soda and borax together with your soap nuts - to brighten colors. And also pure baking soda is probably the cheapest, most non-toxic and most effective alternative to any dish soap.
+Marina James Aww thanks for your kind words and the tips!
awesome. I need to make some changes
Hope you can give them a try!
there is a great documentary all about Dr bronner. its great! its on hulu. it explains all about the writing as well.
+shafali kharb Oh yes that's right, I thought I saw something about that before, I'll have to check it out and finally make sense of all the writing. ( :
Thanks for the tip. I have Hulu and will watch it!
no problem. i myself just watched it recently and loved every part of dr bronners et. families journey. his message is great
I use these 2 eco balls that use negative ions to clean they are amazing and you put them out in the sun to recharge them. the also remove odor. I don't use a dryer to be eco friendly I dry our washing in the sun. saves money, energy and is 100%green. 😄
+Leisa Buck I used to use something similar, glad to hear you like them as well!
They are the only thing I can use to get the wee smell from bedding when my daughter wets the bed!
You should try Norwex!
Where do you get your pump jars? I'm excited to try the castille soap as body wash. We've been wanting to get rid of the high chemicals in brand washes. Thank you for the EWG website as well. Just found out that my "green" all purpose cleaner isn't green at all. :(
+T har
There should be a link to the jars in the description box, hopefully it works! I can relate to your frustration with the green cleaners not being that green..grr. Frustrating.
Hi Ashley! Thank you for this video, super useful as always =D I agree with you, sometimes storebought cleaners are just super handy and are as eco-friendly as some homemade ones, so why not give them a shot =) for my laundry I use soapnuts just like you, and put some rubber balls and disks in the drum with the clothes. I also add some white vinegar as fabric softener and for the white clothes, I put one teaspoon of sodium percarbonate, it acts as a natural hydrogen peroxyde and it's also efficient for handwashing =) hope this can be useful =) have a lovely day!
+Marine Tenfou (Stania) Thanks for sharing what works for you!
look up My Green Fills for laundry :)
+*STARSofJEWELS* Will do ( :
I had heard of them, I think, is that the one that the kneady homesteader likes?
I heard of this natural detergent call crystalball and i saw some reviews on it and they were positive feedback and it also cruelty-free. look into it to see if you might like it. love your videos very helpful.
+jeraldine augusme
I've heard of those balls and always wondered how they were, will have to look into it. Thank you! ( :
+AshleysGreenLife I was going to suggest those too, I think they're called Crystal Wash. I've never used them, but they seem pretty green, and you just "recharge" them in sunlight! As for the dryer, I don't actually use anything as far as fabric softeners. We wash in cold water and usually add a bit of vinegar, so I'm not sure if that helps, but we don't have any static from the dryer. Also, brilliant idea using the dish brush instead of a normal toilet brush! Why have I not considered that? Smaller is definitely better to really get in the curves of the toilet bowl, and most "green" cleaning methods need a bit more elbow grease, so the right tool would help. Thanks for the idea! :)
+Megan F You bet!
Thanks Ashley!!
Quick question: do you need that much dishwashing detergent for one load? I am trying to price-compare with a couple of other products and I read somewhere that 1 oz per load of this detergent is good enough. Would like to hear your opinion on the qty per load.
Good question, I always just fill the spot in my dishwasher, not sure how much that actually is?
i bought the concentrated non-bio ecover liquid. does anyone know if we can use a dosing ball that goes directly in the drum with it. it says put it in the drawer but id rather not for various reasons.
Where did you buy your soap dispenser? Do you ever develop rust stains with that one?
Usually just at Bed Bath & Beyond or Target...and sometimes they do get rust stains ) :
Ashley, I have a question for you. I was wondering if you still use the same wool dryer ball that you shared in this video? I’ve been looking into getting the wool dryer balls but my daughter is vegan and she asked me if the ones that I’m going to buy would be vegan. So I came to your video to see which ones you are using.
I do still use the same ones...but if they ever break or I need new ones I will be getting these vegan ones made from bamboo: buddha-bunz.myshopify.com/products/bamboo-vegan-dryer-ball ( :
I tried to make my own laundry soap like 3 times with different recipes, I just didn't like it. My clothes just were not clean, maybe it's my hard water I don't know. I use ECOS brand laundry detergent it's awesome and no fragrance. I get it at Target it's less than 10 bucks 😀
+ilikejumprope Glad you can relate to skipping making some cleaners at home and just going with the store bought ones, for laundry especially! ( :
I make a laundry soap that works real well. I have autoimmune disease with hyper sensitivity. I do equal parts of washing soda, borax (it is safe), baking soda, 2 grated soap bar (castelle). (I also use oxyclean 1/2 part which I know isn't green but have not found a replacement that works for me) base my parts on how many cups the grated soap makes. Cause soap is equal. The important thing is to process the grated soap very finely. I use my ninja processor for this. Then measure. Last batch I had 3 cups soap, so 3 cups of other ingredients, then 1/2 cups of oxyclean. I use 1/8 to 1/4 cup of laundry soap depending on the size of load. 1/4 - 1/2 vinegar as a softener. Then I use wool dryer balls (with essential oil) for dryer or hang dry.
Thanks for sharing!
Borax is a highly irritating chemical. It's banned in most of Europe!
Ashley, why do you use powdered detergent and not liquid?
No specific reason, that specific brand had one of the best non-toxic scores over at the EWG website.
Have you tried mygreenfills laundry products??
I haven't...
I love Dr. Bronner! But I notice the castile soap is really drying on my skin :(
Anyone else experience the same thing?
I find it drying when I don't dilute it, have you tried that by any chance?
I use old news
paper to clean my mirrors with no streaks what so ever.
+Nappalious Interesting, I've always heard that but haven't got the paper for years. Thanks for sharing!
what about oxygen bleach? is that bad?
+keg10609 I haven't checked it on the EWG website but I think it's a safer alternative than traditional bleach.
+AshleysGreenLife you should check because it's really good for stains and whites.
You don't have to kill a sheep to get wool. I can't imagine why it would be a problem
+Cheryl Boone Some vegans are very strict against it, I try to be a little more relaxed though, I agree with your point. (:
+AshleysGreenLife well you want to look for eco wool. the process can be fast and hurtful leaving the lambs cut up :-(
But my husband & I use those wool balls in our house too. Got them before going vegan. We like to dab essential oils kn them. Our favorite combo is cinnamon & cloves! Or a simple orange essential oil will do in the dryer if you have a citrus eco friendly wash or just add it into the wash as well on the rinse cycle ;-)
Depending on where the wool is from, sheep aren't treated well. People who mass produce wool obviously need wool and need it quickly and often the animals welfare is put dead last in favor of profit. They shear them too quickly, are rough with them, they get cuts but no medical attention. I am not sure if there is a humane way wool is gathered. Before I went Vegan I wanted those dryer balls so bad. I have been using fragrance free dryer sheets for now but would love a more vegan friendly alternative. I will be on the hunt and let you guys know. 😊
You should look up what they do to sheep to get their wool......
To answer your question it is a common vegan belief that all animals exist for their own purposes and not for us (humans) to benefit from them. I don't say that with any malicious or snarky intent though... Just to educate. :) love these videos btw.
Setgoals312, (I think, sorry if this isn't spelled right) the bottle has things on the label that are not in line with God's Word. Another Christian pointed it out to me, and started reading the label on Dr bronner's products. There are other products to use, so I do. I don't expect everyone to stop using the soap, just I won't put my money towards it is all.
so you won't use it because it doesn't line up with the Bible?? I'm confused. I'm a Christian and I use it for everything. a lot of our cleaning products don't line up with the Bible but we still need them to clean things and ourselves. I just don't get what your beliefs are if they limit what you can and cannot use.
I won't use it because of the message it puts on every bottle of the product. I don't want to spend my money to anything that has a message that directly conflicts with the Bible. There are many other products that I can use instead, so I do.
softfloral tampa What message?
