    You could also use shea butter in place of the coconut oil, I found that coconut oil can clog pores however shea butter absorbs into the skin and is a 0 on the comedogenic scale meaning it doesn't clog pores also it doesn't have a high protein level so it doesn't not cause nut allergies! Hope this helps for anyone who doesn't like greasy coconut oil

    I went Vegan in OCT 2013, then started eliminating chemicals from my home and personal products. Deodorant was the first thing to go and immediately after switching to an aluminum-free product, my breasts began emitting a very strong chemical smell! It lasted for about 2 weeks. I had built up 40 years of toxins, 25 of them as a smoker! I feel SO much better after quitting the cigarettes and eliminating chemicals. I think more clearly and am starting to reverse 40 years of damage.

    I've made my own deodorant with coconut oil, baking soda, and cornstarch, and it works like a charm! Cornstarch and arrowroot are similar - moisture-absorbing agents. (I actually shake some cornstarch into my socks to reduce friction from moisture and prevent blisters.) In short, cornstarch is a good swap!

    I am just so grateful that I learned from sites like yours and intuition how to take back control that I felt was stolen from me by the establishment. My homemade deodorant costs less and is more effective, and it's non-toxic.
    And on another note, if we really put our minds to it, we can start growing our own food again. We don't have to put up with the way they poison our food supply, etc. No matter how big Goliath is, David can win.

    I made this and I am a convert! Thanks so much for this recipe, it works so well!
    I used cornstarch (because I had it at home and was eager to try it right after watching the video) and I used a couple of drops of tea tree oil for the scent and antibacterial properties and it works amazing for both me and my husband. I am always a bit weary when it comes to deodorant because I am prone to body odour if I'm not really careful (not all deodorant brands work for me for example), but this is great! It really works!

    I made this and have been using it for a couple of days (including spending time out in the hot sun and SWEATING!) and it actually WORKS for me!! I used cornstarch because that's what I had at home. My roommate even smelled up close at the end of the day and said I didn't stink, so it's approved. Super easy to make, and how great would it be if I never have to buy deodorant again and can just whip it up from regular kitchen ingredients. I'm loving it

    I have been using this deodorant for the last two months now, and I LOVE IT!
    I smell, feel and even look better( my arm pits are turning lighter and softer). I however use: 2 tsp of baking soda and arrowroot powder and 3 tsp of coconut oil.
    I find that this does not burn( as it would for some people), and it is made just right. I have sensitive skin and have not yet experienced any problems with this, however i used to experience problems such as itching, soreness and also spots appearing when i would use the normal deodorants.
    This is the best thing i have ever tried on my body.

    So when I first made this recipe, it started out fine. No funk at all. But after awhile, my armpits dried out to the point that my skin was burning, peeling, discolored and it hurt pretty badly. So what I did was take what was left and instead of using it full strength, just took like 2 tablespoons of it as a base, then do 1/4 cup of coocnut oil, 2 tablespoons each of shea butter and cocoa butter and mixed together, adding some essential oil to it for scent. This works for me, I think the baking soda was the culprit in making my armpits hurt.

    I tried different deodorants but they didn't work, until I found the natural crystal stick. But for over a year, I've been just dapping some baking soda on underarms every morning. It works GREAT. Just baking soda ONLY, and it's already amazing.

      I always wanted to try the natural crystal stick. My problem is I sweat alot from hot flashes and go thru my t shirts. Hopefully it will work. I also heard taking zinc and some herbs that will help with odor

      My mother is a health nut/ all natural sort of woman, and I had to deal with her buying that crystal stick WHILE I was going through puberty.
      Just so you know, that crystal stick stinks. As in it doesn't do jack. As in I had to deal with a few days being teased for smelling like B.O after gym class before I just broke down and bought some deodorant with my allowance money.

  • @donblack6415

    The baking soda was stinging my pits and I actually have burns, very minor burns but they sting and made my skin darker. I did some research and found that baking soda has PH of 8.3 which is too high for the skin so maybe if I use less baking soda it wont burn. The baking soda does work better for odor elimination than my antiperspirant. i just have to get the ratio right for my skin.

    • @selenalamothe8681
      @selenalamothe8681 8 років тому +4

      Same here except my skin looks lighter where it burned. I tried 1 teaspoon if it but it still burned me. Its the only thing that elminates odor so i dont know what to do. What are you doing about it?

    • @donblack6415
      @donblack6415 8 років тому +2

      At the moment I have gone back to antiperspirant but I have found one with less than 18% aluminum which is dove men line. It has 15% aluminum. I'm thinking about using less baking soda and adding tea tree oil water and coconut oil. Baking soda is only needed in small amount. In 100 ounces of diy deoderant only 1-4 ounces should be baking soda so keep the percentage of baking soda under 4% in your formula if you're sensitive and see how your skin reacts and if it helps with odor.

    • @selenalamothe8681
      @selenalamothe8681 8 років тому +3

      Don Black I really don't know how to measure the 4%. It's confusing. Anyway they say if you detox your armpits with bentonite clay then you can use natural deodorant without any baking soda because you wont need it. Thats what im gonna do. For now im not putting anything on my pits till they heal. This morning they were cracking and peeling slightly but it only hurt when i lifted my arms. I'm currently at school during breakfast and i havent sweated since i got up which is super odd. I wonder if ill ever sweat again or if i really danaged myself. I'm gonna buy some bentonite clay when i save up money soon.

    • @donblack6415
      @donblack6415 8 років тому +1

      It's temporary. You'll sweat again lol. Let me know if the clay works because that may definitely be a game changer.

    • @selenalamothe8681
      @selenalamothe8681 8 років тому

      Don Black I will definitely let you know. Also school is over and i still havent sweated and feel no pain. When i get home im gonna recheck the area. I kind of want to put shea butter on it to heal but i dont want to disturb the area.

    So I made my own batch and I used the baking soda, cornstarch, coconut oil, about 5 drops of each tea tree oil and lavender oil. So far I've only had one bad experience with some severe armpit pain, (didn't wash the deodorant off b4 bed) but this stuff works better at smell reduction than anything else I've ever tried. And wetness, well I still have some sweat but nothing like going without deodorant. I work in a pizza shop so its gets really hot and sweaty. Love this stuff! ThanksAgain4Sharing!

I developed a rash and cystic acne all over my underarms, but i switched to another natural deodorant and then back to schmidts with no reaction! I just want to add for those making homemade deodorant for the first time, you should totally use this! I found one of the most convenient benefits from natural deodorant (I used pure coconut oil, pure beeswax, 100% cornstarch, baking soda, pure Vitamin E oil, and Shea butter) is that you can just wipe or rub any excess into your skin and not have to worry about a mess. :) It's all natural, anyway!

    Just my experience.. I've been using this for like a week. made it with the baking soda. It has been working great with keeping me smelling good! I used it once for all day, got up the next day, reapplied it and it kept me smelling good the rest of that day as well until I showered that night. I noticed I would sweat sometimes but that's natural, and even after sweating I didn't smell. I'd say it works better than regular deodorant with keeping me smellin good, and it's just way better for you. I also noticed after shaving and rubbing it on it would kinda make me itchy in a way after awhile, so instead of rubbing I patted it on. I think that solved the problem. I think next time I'll sub the other ingredient for baking soda though

    Great video! This past weekend I made my very first batch of homemade deodorant (very similar to yours, with the addition of shea butter, and I left out the Arrowroot since I didn't have any). Glad to see that you can just apply it by hand. I ended up scooping mine into a cleaned out deodorant container (got messy, but after setting up further overnight it works well). None of Business I don't understand how diatomaceous earth is ever "food grade". Like "food grade" mineral oil. They tell you its eatable but you should avoid it. What I know of it YOU SHOULD NOT EAT IT! Let alone put it on your body. It will cause horrible irritation. This isn't like using cornstarch

    Cornstarch isn't what stings or burns the skin. It's the baking soda that will/can do that. Cornstarch is used in natural baby & body powder, which would not be the case if it stung or burned.

    I made some of this stuff except the recipe I used had cornstarch as well as arrow root powder (although it's probably unnecessary) and the stuff really works!! I haven't been able to get a smell of BO yet. Even if I lather loads of the stuff liberally on to my arm pits after a few hours there is no greasy trace left and no white marks. This stuff is awesome and I really have no idea why it isn't more popular.

    I tried using this for about a month and it really irritated my armpits. Not sure if it was the baking soda or the arrowroot powder but from the comment below it seems like it could have been the baking soda. My mom also tried it and the same thing happened to her. When I used it my dark clothes would be stained but I was probably using too much because my mother didn't have this problem. Maybe it was irritating because I used too much? I sweat a lot so I'm always used to using lots deodorant. This channel is great!!!

    If only for the simple fact that deodorant is SO expensive--I definitely try this!!!! I love this idea!! Thanks and God Bless. By tha way it does make sense to me that if we're going for Aluminum-free products--that the container made in-- should be carefully chosen. Though the bowl you used (if any traces were there) is probably less toxic than what manufacturers put in shelf products. Jussssst saying....
    Anyway, I am definitely going to make this young lady.

      hi! it stains your clothes with those white deodorant stains if you don't let it soak in and get dry on your skin before putting a shirt on. but it easily washes out of the clothes with just water, so even if you stain it, it is not permanent! :)

    I had made natural deodorant like this, so I would say you can follow this recipe, but you can add a small amount of pure beeswax to it. I can not state an exact measurement, but melt a small amount to add into the mix. Basically, because it will solidify when cooler, you can apply it to your arm (the rubbing will warm the product), and it will help keep your arms a little bit drier after it is applied. This stuff all really works. It feels great, too!

  • @selenalamothe8681
    @selenalamothe8681 8 років тому +62

    You have really good information here but honestly the baking soda isn't good for skin and will irritate or burn. People need to detox their armpits with bentonite clay for a while in order for natural deodorant to work without needed baking soda. also diet plays a HUGE role in the stench.
    EDIT: I've ditched the bentonite clay after finding out about the traces of lead in it. My mom bought me Tom's Natural Deodorant which has no aluminum in it and it works like a charm!

      Leikili H Hi there! I've since quit using bentonite clay when i found out there are traces of lead in it. I know there are traces of lead in most things but I'd like to lessen my exposure to it. If you still want to know about the detoxing WellnessMama .com has a pretty straight forward article on it. You'll need bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar, water, and measuring spoons. :)

    • @selenalamothe8681
      @selenalamothe8681 7 років тому +9

      Leikili H Okay so i did some research and apparently the lead in bentonite clay is already bonded to an element like Zinc, so it safely goes into your body. Unbonded lead like in lipstick is whats bad. :)

    Great video! I'd just like to add that I did some research and that Arm & Hammer baking soda does not contain aluminum at all. People started assuming that it had aluminum because it didn't say "aluminum free" like Bob's Red Mill. I emailed Arm & Hammer myself and they said their baking soda is 100% sodium bicarbonate and that there's no aluminum in it whatsoever. It's important for everyone to do their research before believing everything people say online. =/
