I’ve been fighting a thrips infestation for the past two months that I thought would be the death of me, but I think I’m almost past it. I took immediate action and fortunately haven’t lost a single one of my 150+ plants. If any thrips are reading this, know that your time has come.
lol same. Thrips are so bad I’ve had them for ages. For me, diatomaceous earth has helped a lot
Systemic granules was the only thing that helped me beat the thrips!! You can see night and day!!!
Thrips are so damn annoying! I hope you get them all and I hope they never bother you again. 😅
How did you do it? Glad your winning the battle! ❤
@@TheTashaDramawas that the only thing you used?glad you got rid of them!
I just got a free large cast iron antique plant stand and this is the only place that can appreciate that with me
Nice 😊
I love those in white!! Great acquisition
That's awesome!
I still need to get one of the variegated aspidistra, I tried once and got scammed but I did get a refund at least.
To be honest I've been loving all the pest treatment talk as my collection has been hit too and I'm in a small space so it's all one room.. lots of work. I like to know what others are doing and how it's working for them. Pros and cons. I'm still not confident to diagnose what's wrong with my plants so seeing others collections that aren't perfect and them talking about why that plant isn't doing well is SUPER helpful. Thank you so much for your channel it's much appreciated ❤
Thank you so much for this, really glad it’s helpful 🥺 pests can be so stressful!
I’ve got a mirror ball planter sitting on my kitchen table. The morning light hits it and sends spots of light all over the kitchen ceiling. Love it. 😍
Hey Fern, this is the recipe I use and it hasn’t burned any leaves; even anthurium emergents!
Combine
4 cups Water
1/8 cup Dr. Woods Tea tree soap
1/8 cup Dr. Woods Peppermint soap
1/2 cup 70% Alcohol
1 1/2 tsp 3% Hydrogen peroxide
Shake to combine as using. Spray the leaves to run off, top of soil, nursery pot, cover pot. Clean surfaces. Use monthly to clean leaves or weekly for an active outbreak (3 weeks minimum).
This is the recipe she used.
@@Tamolwv if I remember correctly hers had 1 cup of alcohol and a couple of the other ratios were different.
@carolinebaines8735 now that you mention it, I do remember someone commented that she had her measurements off on that.
Defff giving this a try
Just a heads up...whnen you spray your plants with the tea tree oil and peppermint oil mix, let them dry completely before putting them back under grow lighjts. That will cause burn to your plants
I had a pretty much same situation. I don’t have grow lights, but sunlight made the damage :(
Had the same issue with a peppermint oil based pesticide
Oh, dude, yes. “Curated,” to me, is whatever makes you the happiest! If that is a bunch of plants hanging out together- makes perfect sense to me 😃 I’m happiest amongst the plants. 🤗
Olive stole the show at the end. Who cares about plants when you can watch her 💚💚💚
100% agree. She's an angel.
What a great tour!💖
Just a PSA... Wally Grow loop planters are on sale for 5.00. They do stand on a flat surface/ not just hanging.
That house was meant for you,the windows are incredible, love the rainbows🤩😍.
Your frydek is stunning!! I wish mine would size up 😭 it was big at one time, I repotted it and it threw a fit, and now it won’t get big again. Alocasia drama is real 😂
i’ve been using 1/3 91% isopropyl alcohol mixed w 2/3 water on my plants for pests and even on my emerging anthurium leaves i haven’t noticed any damage at all
I use straight alcohol and it works 😊
Fern your collection is looking so curated and lovely!
thank you so much 🥹 this means a lot!
My Ping has 14 flowers on it right now! Yes, 14. What is happening, I can't even 🧡🌿
Your nails💅 look so pretty fern! 🤎🤎✨️
Dear Fern, use ONLY the Castile Soap and water, and skip the alcohol and peroxide any time you do not see an ACTIVE infestation. Soap (especially horticultural soap, such as Safer, Garden Safe, Bonide Super Soap) is enough to control the most common types of chewing/sucking pests (mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, aphids, scale) on houseplants. You might need to repeat weekly for several weeks, but it's truly effective and very gentle on new growth and delicate variegation. Reserve the alcohol for when you can SEE mealies, spider mite webbing, aphids, and other buggies attacking your plants.
Do you rinse the soap mixture off after applying, or do you leave it on? It's the only part I'm unsure of...
Good idea!! I’ll do that once I’m in the clear here 😃
@@krishalifax2746 Do not wash it off. That's one of the reasons why it's best to use a properly formulated horticultural soap (Bonide Super Soap, Safer Insect Killing Soap, Garden Safe) or pure Castile Soap and water, never dishwashing soap. The soap has to remain on the leaves because it works by making contact with the pests, clinging to their exoskeleton, and smothering them slowly. Dawn and other "soaps" and not really soaps, they are detergents and could damage your plant with repeated use. Now, if it's convenient, you can spray the horticultural soap on and let the plant drip dry, then, a few days later, take the plant to the sink or shower and blast it with just water. This will do 2 things: dislodge any critters that might have hatched since last soap treatment, and remove excess soap that can sometimes give a hazy look to the leaves. In fact, I wash my plants BEFORE I spray them with soap, and once the pests are gone, at least once a month to remove dust and optimize photosynthesis...and just in case there's any type of "bug" lurking, waiting to take over.
I used this DIY recipe (kind of) for a thrips and spider mite infestation. I only had lavender castile soap but added a few drops of tea tree and peppermint essential oils and its worked wonderfully!
Have a great trip! Thanks for the update with the pest recipe. Wishing all the best for your plant babies ✨🌿🌟💚✨
Thanks so much! 😊
your eyes are popping extra with this makeup! it’s so prettyy 💙🩵
I finally got a bag of Molly’s Aroid Mix. I’m so excited to see how the Philodendrons and Hoyas I potted up do in it 💚💚💚
I made my own version and all mine seem really happy
I have those mushroom water globes and they’re my favorite planty thing!! So cute
Oh thank you!!! I have wondered a lot about those random spots! Now I know EFN. So glad you said that.
hey fern! i think it makes sense to spray diatomaceous earth on the plants again befor you leave since you're worried about pests when you're gone, i know you just washed them off, but this treatment is a good option because it stays on the leaves for a long time. looking forward to you vlog prepping the plants for the trip!
Another comment from me. Having had houseplants for decades, I now won’t buy hangers that are attached to the pot that are made with rope, jute, etc. Every one eventually frays and falls away due to watering the pot and the rope soaking the water up. The plant lands on the floor! If I love the pot, I’ll buy it but will restring it with wire.
Yep,I’ve had a pot on the floor from the rope/jute rotting where it was tied to the pot. 😫
I appreciate your constant updates on pests!!!! First time dealing with mealies and wait for your pest updates!! Thank you for helping me get through this!!
Girl them aphids love Hoya. They got all mine this year! I just spray them bad boys with the hose and shower them off !!! Then squish the rest 😘
This is another reason why I never travel. Now that I have plants I would be worried sick about them at home while away. Best of luck I hope they stay strong for you!
Here in Scotland we call those "large mosquito things" Daddy Longlegs ❤
We have a spider in Australia called Daddy Long Legs
Love that ping that’s green and purple with the cute little flower on it. Stunning.
About the macrame pot that fell - tea tree oil is really powerful stuff. I put some in a plastic container once and it literally melted the container into goop. If there’s something that might have eaten the glue, I wouldn’t put it past the tea tree. Isopropyl alcohol does dissolve super glue, so if it was superglued in, that was what did it. 😂 everything is looking so lovely on the whole. I’m always impressed with how you handle pests. After my own thrips mayhem the past spring, I understand how a little neglect can really cause a massive problem. So good on you. 🪴💚
Thank you so much for the longer video. I had asked previously if you could possibly do a longer one. Absolutely 💯 love the video 😊😅😊
Love the shelves 🪴💚
That begonia 34:47 looks like the leaves were designed by an orb weaver spider.
I'm so glad that you changed the back round of the cabinet it's so beautiful & it doesn't look clutter anymore 😅 great job
Thank you!! 😊 I'm really happy with it!
I use the same treatment and I have had some emerging leaves do the same. I use less soap than the recipe says and sometimes rinse any emerging leaves after a few minutes.
When are you applying the pest treatment? Try doing it in the evening when the lights aren’t on. That might be why it’s burning
Perfect timing Fern, just sat down for lunch 🫶
enjoy your lunch, thank you for watching 🌿
I just searched your name and you just posted 😁 early 🫶🏻 love you ❤️🌱
omg that really is perfect timing! thank you so much for watching
Anthurium pallidiflorum is the next on my wishlist!!! Yours is so stunning!
Your plant stands look fine! I don’t think I even see a speck of dust!!😂Plants are messy, and cords will show, mine do! lol. We are proud! 💚💚
Love your collection ❤❤ I can't wait to get my stands and plant wall set up. It's been a long time in the works but life just got in the way and I was never able to finish.
Yessss - I need this to get me through the rest of my workday 😆❤️❤️
yay i hope it helps you pull through
Thank you!! ❤️ your videos always help me pull through 😆❤️
Aphids love Hoya. My first Summer with a Hoya Caudata Sumatra, there was an infestation on every single new leaf for months, even with treatment.
I, too, am battling scale! The first time I have seen them in my collection. Where do they come from? Assuming they hitched a ride on new plant purchases. I squish them whenever we meet...!
I just went away for 3 days. The anxiety is real. Had a friend come to look after my cat, but I wasn't going to burden them with turning grow lights on and off. Everything is fine, aside from the usual suspects 😂🧡🌿
aaaaa i love the way the cebu blue has those pinholes along the middle of the leaf!!
That doriyaki/red crystal is sooo cute! Have a fantastic trip.
I'm so glad that we have mainly good news, perfect reset for spooky season!
For spider mites and thrips I recently tried treating my plants with the Safer's "3 in 1" insecticide. I had done a few treatments with "End All" but only one treatment of the "3 in 1" did the job for many plants. It leaves kind of a greasy residu that seems to work well.
Thank you for showing the efn damage, I thought I was fighting a pest on my micans but the spots look exactly like those
I didn't use this mixture but I observed the same mushy new growth on my peace lily and calathea for the first time this growing season so it could be something else. I have a preventive routine too but I only use neem oil once a month after their "dusting" shower.. Hope you will find your way out of this pest nightmare..
🤞.. Enjoy your travel!!!
Thank you, Fern, for another interesting video! Enjoy your vaca!
Another great video. Your plants are beautiful and learn so much from you. Thx. Have a great trip.
I love your pingdom too. If I had a flat surface to put it in I’d make one too. It always intrigues me when I see it.
My hoyas got aphids this summer too! I guess they really are attracted to the hoya for some reason.
Love this video, great job, everything looks so healthy and clean. I am curious as to how many plants you have🤔
I have all the stuff to spray bugs, store bought and diy, but I've only sprayed 2x's. When I find bugs I separate and wash with dish soap and water, then spray with water in about 2 days and again if I see any. That's worked well for me. This summer I had an explosion of thrips on 1 newest leaf on an Anthurium, sprayed like that and they haven't come back. I was very surprised, bc there must have been 200 nymphs on the 1 newest leaf. I also decided to cut off 3 leaves with older damage, but had just a few thrips. I expected them to come back, but they haven't. Luckily I caught it in time, bc the 1 leaf looks really good.
Awe! I love philobrandon thanks to you! Would love to see more content from them. 🤗 nighty nights Fern
i just bought a lil baby philodendron florida ghost today & cannot wait to watch her grow!
Sending good vibes your way 😊😊😊
Fernnnn I’ve never used UA-cam so much before you 😂
All your plants are looking awesome! I love your collection. I have also been dealing with pests and your DIY mixture is great but I would suggest you remove the alcohol and the hydrogen peroxide- that should minimize the risk of damage on sensitive plants and new growth points👌🏻😊
Alcohol dehydrates tissue. Which can really explain the crispy leaves. Also I’m not sure it can really amp up the results of diatomaceous earth. I’m wondering if that spray mixture can really work without the added alcohol. 🤔🤔 I’ll try making an experiment with it. I have a dieffenbachia with spider mites right now
Your collection is beautiful!! Seriously obsessed with your plant shelves 😍 I’ve had the same thing happen with spray treatments before and I have 2 suggestions. First, spray after your grow lights go off for the night. The hydrogen peroxide and essential oils in the soap can cause the plants to burn. Second, try to avoid spraying the emergent leaves. I imagine water is getting trapped in there and causing rot. There’s not enough alcohol in there to kill all bacteria.
Oh frequency of spraying might also be contributing.
I beat scale with babyoil and dish soap. Bottle of water and squirt of each. Repeated weekly until they were all gone!!! Much more gentle than the combo youre using now. Good luck!!!
Awwww I really love the ceramic sun pot that fell down lol. 😍 Can you please share where did you buy it? ☺
Yes! Perfect timing for this video to roll in!!! ❤
Do you think you can somehow mount the Thai grow light vertically on the wall next to the fridge?? That would look good and provide great light for her! Plus it could also help the Florida which is also looking beautiful! OMG and the Wally grow wall, I love the change into smaller plants!❤❤
First time commenter here. Been following your channel for years! I use a similar castille soap solution and noticed the same type of damage when I initially used it. I think it's from hydrogen peroxide and/or too much of the solution getting trapped in the leaf sheath causing rot/burn on the new growth. Have omitted the hydrogen peroxide since and have been more conscious of not allowing too much water to get caught in sheaths and haven't had the issue since. PS cotton buds are the perfect tool to soak up trapped solution from the sheath - a little OTT I know 😊
I specifically used Dr. Woods and had no problems. It also smells really nice. I don’t know, but maybe the “brand” made a difference☺️
Thats crazy the DIY pest treatment is causing so much chaos! I've used it quite a bit!
I love, love, love the way your blinds come down. Are they in between the panes of the glass ?
I’ve also been struggling with thrips. Like I think I eradicate them and then I find one little larvae creeping on a plant. Also found out that they love my aloe 😢. I was gonna ask if anyone else’s verricosum’ also become less velvety after pest spraying? I’ve decided to spray every two weeks with neem and safer’s end all to kill the last of the thrips. (Knock on Wood haven’t seen any other pests)
Also decide to jump on the kelpy wagon just got my supply and super excited to see how my plants will do on a better food. I really enjoy all your planty videos fern and hope one day to meet in person! I feel like we have the same vibes ❤ lastly I found a variegated thanksgiving cactus and I can’t wait for it to be big and lush like yours 😊
The cabinet looks more freshener & breathable ❤
Great video! I would love to see a more detailed video about your Pinguicula 💚
I use the same diy solution but without the hydrogen peroxide and half the amount of alcohol and havent encountered any damage not even when i spray new anthurium leaves
Have a great vacation 😀🇨🇦
Thank you! 😃
❤❤❤❤❤lovely video.
Thanks for your time.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Plants 🪴 are really healthy & gorgeous 💪🏽
Hey Fern! So I’ve had the same damage on my plants before where the emergent leaf comes out and died off immediately but I had never used the DIY mix on those plants. I’ve always been told it’s either thrip damage or could be root issues…idk if this helps or not. Good luck tho, sometimes these plants really be testing us😅
I think I need a Hoya Waliana. It’s beautiful and it blooms.
I would move the H. Linearis a bit, because you would not want to get scale on that one! I got scale on mine this summer, out of no where. Never seen them before and suddenly they were here, there and every where.
I had a massive happy Linearis and it bloomed every year. As long as yours and over double så thick and it was a hell to treat the Linearis.
I unfortunately lost almost all the plant. I only have a small plant left but without any scale (I think) and I guard it like crazy. I honestly am so sad over that fricking plant as it was so big and beautiful and it was my absolute favorite.
I know you love yours too, so I would just give you a heads up about the scale and it’s so diffecult to treat as there’s so many places for the scale to hide and sit. I hate scale and saw most of the damage on my Hoyas and jungle cactus. I hope you will get rid of the scale in your house and be aware of the spreading when you use scissers and touch.
hoya vitellinoide and globulosa are mine lastes obsession as well, look for mountain zoo, simmilat to globulosa but liveas are massive!😍 have a great holidays!
Happy weekend!
I’m not sure if we use the same recipe but it sounds similar and the spray I make doesn’t burn or do any damage, here it is:
For a 32oz spray bottle:
-1/8 C tea tree soap
-1/8 C peppermint soap
-1/2 C rubbing alcohol
-1/2 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide
-top with water
Soap is Castile if that even matters.
Love your nail polish. I see that Mooncat has new polishes out. I got an email telling me about it.
I’ve never been this early to a Fern video
yay thank you!! :)
Oh, I didn't know EFN causes such damage. My philodendron pedatum does it and I thought the damage was past related.
That's a relief 😅
I use 50/50 water and 70% isopropyl alcohol, with a squirt of dish soap as pest treatment and have never had a problem with burning (except for a more delicate begonia). Sometimes I wipe it off, sometimes I let it sit, not sure why that happened to your plants.
yeah it's so weird 👀
Ferny it's the alcohol!! Kick it, the soap does the trick alone ❤
Hey what's up fern it's Jason hope you're having an amazing Friday💯👋😎😀
hi jason! thanks so much for watching :)
My Hoya obovata is so stiff and the vines are so think it would break if I put it in a trellis. I’ve got a bamboo shelf and one of the vines is stuck up through the top between the slats so they support it. Also it’s in a heavy ceramic pot so that’s heavier than the plant.
I used the diy stuff too not the exact same but I think it’s too much soap I had a few leaves get crispy and 💀 my el Choco it was a baby still 😬 last time i diluted with water and did better! Make sure the iso alcohol is 70% in the bottle not too strong and I didn’t use hydrogen peroxide I just use that if I have root rot or bugs in soil and propagations in water to keep fresh for longer ❤️✨🌱
Also forgot to mention if soap gets In soil it messes up the plant if it’s picky 😫 some can handle it but it’s scary 🫣
I had aphids out on my balcony plants (sunflowers and some veggies (that aren't at a harvest size yet, so that's not how they got in), but somehow a couple of them managed to get inside and onto the newest leaf of my anthurium clarinervium!?! So random, and thankfully haven't found any more anywhere, but I have no idea how they managed it 😅
I feel like bugs are going to come inside regardless , especially aphids (which I discovered love Hoyas too)
Your drosera will do well om windowsill with pings, they love gnats, nepenthes will flourish hanging in your window 😊
All that damage would have been from the soap, or one of the ingredients in the soap. At my job we use a peat solution for indoors that’s basically half alcohol half water and it never causes any damage.
Love love love
EFN’s, I had to Google that one! I had never heard of it. Maybe that’s what’s going on with my Micans philodendron. I’ll keep a closer watch to see if there are any little sticky spots on the back of my leaves. There are never any bugs/pests so maybe EFN’s!
Your variegated cactus should have been out outside over the summer. They need cold weather to help set the blooms. And you’re right to leave it in natural light. They need longer dark days to help it bloom too. I always used to put my Christmas cactus outside in the summer and then brought it in just before the first freeze. Worked every time. I got lazy and haven’t put it out in a while. Last time it bloomed was 2019. Time to plan on putting it out next summer.
Yup. I have noticed the same thing with my pest treatment and new growth. Sometimes I feel like it’s just worth it to sacrifice the baby leaves… I am not a patient person though so this process sucks ass.
