I felt like the thanksgiving or Christmas cactus was everywhere in the 80s and even before that. Thats a generational beauty love them and they flower too
I lived through the 80's. I was not aware that in those days, Maximalism, was the order of the day. That is interesting. Over all, I don't really see a huge difference from then to now other than variegated plants were not as accessible back then. You basically got what you could get at the local nursery. Sometimes if you knew about specific plant you could ask the nursery to special order it for you. Succulents are still popular and you can stick them into those bright Talavera planters for that pop of color effect these days. I suppose spider plants were more popular back then and the other popular plant that I remember was pothos, typically kept as a trailing plant rather than climbing up moss poles. Indeed, African Violets were popular with some older women, I used to work with. However, judging by what's for sale on Etsy, African violets are still popular; they're just a favorite that for what ever reason aren't talked about on social media, if that makes any sense. As you can see, the indoor jungle is still a thing. That trend has not gone away and I don't foresee that going away anytime soon.
Was a child of the 80’s. I remember ficus and spider plants being in everyone’s homes. I have just inherited my mums ficus she bought in 1979 as it’s really outgrown her living space and have rescued it from scale. Hopefully it’ll thrive again soon 🤞 Can you imagine what they will say in another 40 years time? People went mad for plants during Covid, some spending tens of thousands on “rare plants” only to see prices plummet 3 years later. The plant obsession during the early 2020’s were fixated on variegated plants and big, dark alocasia and anthurium, which was described as difficult to keep in a typical home environment. Many spent hours online arguing about a specific genus’s name, the perfect substrate and buying glass cabinets and grow tents to keep their expensive and rare plants in optimal condition 😂
You could be describing the 60's or 70's. All these plants are timeless and classic. Many of us still use wicker and macrame hangers. I have been raising cacti for the last 50 years and never outgrew them.
Hahahaha I got the biggest kichkout of watching this. I am 75 and still in full on hippie mode from back on the 60's and 70's. You forgot to mention all the beads hanging too. Dang I guess I just never wanted to grow up. Plants for me back in the 70's which was when I really got into them were of course the Monstera D. and Pathos and Spider and massive Coleus Some ferns that I kept killing. :( String of hearts. And I still have off shoots from my original string of hearts a friends Mother gave me in mid 70's. Avocado seed/trees and those hanging I think they were called Strawberry Begonias. Jade plants and a few other succulents. I am thrilled now to have so many different varieties available. For me too many as I am totally out of room for more plants. I do not have a grow tent I just live in my whole house as a grow tent. I am going to go see if I can find that book. I might even already have it. Sheese I am such a hoarder. LOL
I have a silver bay chinese evergreen and a lady valentine...They're the easiest plants i own..i practically ignore them and they still thrive. They're often called "office plants" or mall plants for this reason.
Chinese Evergreen could be Dieffenbachia, too. I know my mom had a plant that looked a lot like the waxy leaf version of a dieffenbachia Parlor palms grow slower and can survive in lower light and look pretty amazing. Maybe try one of those?
So happy to have stumbled on this cool video and become your new subscriber 💚 80s girl here & plant lover, this is so interesting to see which plants were popular then!
All I remember my mom ever having was spider plants and pothos, but she was never a planty person. My grandma definitely had African violets. My first plants of my own in the 90’s were a rubber tree, a pothos, a tradescantia.
Yes maidenhair ferns were popular,so were asparagus ferns, pothos, white butterfly (syngonium) draceana, spider plants, rubber plants the dark burgundy ones, there wasn’t much variegated or variety plus yes flowering plants like cane begonias, geraniums and palms.
I came of age in the 80s and I am not sure I agree with you. Monstera deliciosa was big in the 80s. If you look at any 80s television show, you would see large Monsteras, ficus, aglaonema, spider plant, Calathea, ferns, pothos , ZZ plants, Christmas cactus, basic anthuriums, orchids. Frankly, main difference is all the variegated plants and the anthurium hybrids. Large plants were placed in wicker baskets on the floor. I cannot recall the focus on gold but there was colorful planters not the all white planters that are common today. Plants were not always just statement pieces. The jungle bohemian look was also common. Of course now there is more access to the more exotic plants.
Great insight! I listed quite a few of the plants you mentioned in the video :)I got the majority of my information from a couple of 80’s plant books I own and as many plant blogs as I could find from the 80’s. I also mentioned wanting the jungle vibe in the beginning of the video but just noticed a big emphasis on big statement plants. But I didn’t live through that time period so I really appreciate you sharing your experience! Thanks for watching!!
Yes totally agree. And I remember that plants were planted in usually ceramic pots, don’t remember nursery pots inside of cache pot!! And the pots were more ornate…

That’s true my grandma also had like 2 or 3 Christmas cacti in her home!
@@Liagrowsupsame!
Aglaonema’s are extremely low maintenance. Great video. Try some aglaonema’s. You can get them in any color your heart desires.
I don’t know where I got the idea that they were high maintenance! I’ve always loved them from afar so I’m excited to try one now😊

I’m planning on making a video about this exact thing. So interesting looking back at 2020

Thanks for researching, very interesting which plants were popular or still/again are. Great video with the little videos and pictures 😊
So nice of you!! Thank you❤

I had no idea! I may have to try some now 🤭

YAY thank you so much for being here🥹🫶 glad you enjoyed!
Great idea for a video! Interesting that many popular plants are still the same. Monstera Deliciosa will always be queen.

Thank you!! Love your feedback and love hearing about the plants your loved ones had as you grew up! Thanks for being here 🫶
Back in the 80s i had maidenhair ferns, mother in law plants and african violets.
Yes I did see mother in law plants listed a lot as well!!

I don't remember blogging in the 80's. I saw my first computer in 85@@Liagrowsup

oh god is my apartment 1980?
If it is I’m jealous!!!
Don't forget the smell of cigarette smoke 😂 variegated plants were a rarity. Spider plants and golden pothos were about it. Maybe rubber plants
Agleonemia def low maintenance
I think Monstera plants are not pretty at all. They are huge, and always seem to have some type of Pests. Makes a house look too full, and cluttered.
They are not for everyone!
