If you like neon colors, use neon colors! If you like to shade with black, go for it! Like the airbrush? Airbrush!
These things look ameture when theyre sloppy and poorly thought out.

Okay, so, I absolutely HATE coloring with royal blue, I can never find a place for it. Now I found my problem. I always used it on full saturation. I can now use royal blue with full saturation AND less saturated. THANK YOU!!!!
That's kind of funny because I have a character whose skin color in royal blue. And also good job for learning how to saturate the colors. :) I haven't yet tried to really saturate a whole lot of colors. I got the basics down, but that's about it. With time and effort I will learn. ^^ Anyways, great job. :D
You have literally taken years of art school tips and dumbed them down. Thank you. You are amazing.
Kiyoko Roukaum Simple and rustic. Just like how it should be. :^)
Tips for people who like neon colors:
If you want to use them then go ahead. But a good compromise between soft and neon is to make a pastel character and then add neon as an accent color of sorts. Maybe make the eyes neon or the earrings or something. Using bright colors in small amounts can be eye catching but using them in large amounts, while looking unpleasing, can also be nauseating so keep that in mind aswell.
There is a subset of art called eyestrain art that uses a small number of neon colors and uses them for the whole drawing, though. So if you like neon colors you can do that too.
Cool!
Also when you draw a kid use neon’s in the clothes! But not to much like a red and white t shirt or a dress thats green (tiana flashblacks) that has neon green designs like neon green glitter swirls!
It can also work well with shades like black, grey, white, and all in-between.

Artists that are newer to art normally make their shading and color waaay too dark.
Tini Malu either way too dark or way too light

if you want to learn lighting, don't practice it with colors. it won't help. practice with black and white alone. use gray as your main color. and try to create a simple 3D object. like a ball or a cube. start from the basics. but you can't use fully white or fully black. cause this type of lighting rarely exist in real life. once you learn that look at color theory. and try to create a harmony or emotion using nothing bit color. play around with it. and than you should be able to draw it.

When we were younger we all coloured the 'dont' way because those in children colouring pages we only have bright colours to use we just kinda used what we had which made the art not as good
Leah'sCrappy ArtShow Wrong, if you are skilled enough you can mix the color pencils to get other colors or at least give the general idea that they are diffrent colors
+Matt Scashtodraw yeah but most younger artists dont have that skill. theyre beginners, so blending isnt always something that comes to mind. plus most color schemes are set. color pencils like crayola and such are readily available to young artists and they often come with very vibrant, saturated colors. i remember being young and pushing hard against the paper with a pencil of crayon to make the colors really pop. i never thought of desaturating anything until i had more experience.
Yeah, well I did :D
Actually, children like saturated colors because those are easier to percieve and understand.
Leah'sCrappy ArtShow some of us didn’t even colour in the lines.
i call the right drawing's coloring , the " generic " coloring
its pretty common on Deviantart.
I find it's a little worse, using pillow shading or even not using shading at all. But the burn tool is definitely overused
EvanLikesShrubs What does pillow shading mean? Hahah, I should really learn more about art '._.
Eh, don't worry about it. I just had to look it up, since I didn't know what it was either. Basically, it's shading without any distinguishable light-source. So, the outline of the entire object is shaded, while the center is highlighted (the end result looks somewhat like a circular gradient). A quick google search for 'pillow shading' will help clear things up.
Nara yeah, it feels out of place on top of good line art though. Put it on top of a self insert furry character, and there you have the true deviant art experience
d00dle Ew, that sounds like an ugly way of shading :| Thanks for the clarification!
Hey there, loved this video. I feel like a lot of these comments that are like "YOU DONT OWN ME I DO WHAT I WANT WITH ART" are because she kind of worded her video title badly. She probably meant "how to make your art look more professional" like it's not wrong to do those things on the right side, it just looks like a newbie drew it, and that's fine
they also didn't read the description. or they're just joking/trolling.

If you don't mind me adding; an additional tip for painterly shading is to know what type of shadow you're making; if you're drawing, say, a ball on a table, the shadow that it casts on the table will have a hard edge, whereas the shading on the ball where it slowly turns away from the light will be softer; this helps define the shape of the form!
I think that's some pretty solid advice. When it comes to shading, I tend to overlook small details like that.
Thanks! A professor of mine actually just lectured us last week about exactly that so it was fresh on my mind when listening to her talk about painterly shading

i usually do the soft shading. i never really tried the hard shading
Caitlin Brendon I only do hard shading, because I animate and soft shading is so hard to keep consistent. I do soft shading if I'm just illustrating, but never when I'm doing an animation. I usually don't even shade at all on animations.

Even when i was first starting off with digital art I've never used black to shade
Black is good for dynamic cel shading if you're using solid black, so long as you use it to the advantage of the composition.
Potato Potus IKR same. My art still looked gross though
You should always use black for shadows and mixes of different colors for light in those shadows.
I find that using the technique in this video is good for more cartoon-ish drawings, but if you're going for a more dark/serious composition you should pick and choose for every individual color's shadow.
Same. But I always used darker colors. .-. But now I don't, my art is still crap tho.
I wish I had watched this video all those years ago I got my first tablet...
Looking at all the "don't" parts of this video was like watching my older speedpaints TTwTT
This shows you need experience from practice, these little things don't seem obvious to someone who is just starting out, and I still need to learn much more as I go on. :3
Thank you!
while this is very helpful, what do you when you were commissioned to draw a very ugly vibrant character. like neon colours everywhere
I usually tone down a few of the secondary colors a little bit to allow the most important colors to shine more. :D As long as all the colors are still there it seems like people don't mind a bit of darkening or reduced saturation.
LavenderTowne ah thanks so much ill try that!
Color theory
she is only toning down some of the less important colors not making any jurassic changes. To fit the style and the quality of the artwork.
I would try my best to destroy their eyes for wanting something that hurts mine in the process.
OH MY GOD I DIDNT KNOW THAT THIS WAS YOU WHEN I CLICKED ON IT I LOVE YOU COMIC..... HI
aw hey welcome to the channel! . V .)/
I actually LOVE bright vivid colors and contrast and like to use it in a lot of my drawings and photos. Though I'm not a super beginner (I've been drawing for 4 years I think), I feel like as long as you have a good color palette with complementing colors and some understanding of how contrast works, you can still make something look pretty cool. Also I have been in love with your art lately AND TO FIND YOU HAVE A COMIC TOO WOOO! Thanks for all the great vids
Her voice is so calm >-< I love it xD
Holy moly, the one on the left is EYE CANDY
An art style is something you earn, not something you automatically get. Only once you've mastered (or nearly) the basics, for example, the principles of art, have you actually started on a path towards an art style. So saying coloring like the right is your style isn't valid. It clumsily breaks the 'rules' of art rather than modifying them or skillfully bending them. Being an 'art style' is not an excuse for sloppy composition.
And if coloring however you please is fine, then what's the merit in being a professional?
Just some food for thought.
@Little 'Meow :3 isn't it common sense that you should have a artsyle if you want to be a artist?
An artstyle is how you draw so you don't earn it

The reason red and green are an annoying or distracting color combination is because of something called "Reverberation". It's basically where when two high contrast colors are placed next to each other, they start to mess with the eye and look as if they are vibrating and/or mixing together! Pretty cool being an art student haha
Poppy, this is only when you use the colors wrong. For example by using the same amount of red as green or by not using the right saturation. They actually go great together when used right, since they are complementary colors.

So, I'm actually 14, and even though its 2019 now and you made this three years ago, I really appreciate all of the tips that your channel displays. I am really putting thought into my drawings now and am glad I am getting these tips now rather than later in life and being worse at drawing when I'm younger. I absolutely LOVE your art and "Do's and Don'ts" series, and am taking it all into consideration as I draw. I just wanted to say thank you soooooo much and all of this is incredibly helpful in the long-run!
A good cure for using the super bright colors - search for a photo of a sky with colors that seem very vibrant to you. Orange, blue, whatever. Load it in Photoshop. Take the color picker and use it on the most vibrant parts in the picture. See what color you get. Is it the most saturated and brightest orange/blue? No, most likely not. It's often in the middle of the palette, often very far to the left (less saturated) and bordering on grey. Still it LOOKS very orange/blue. Take a while to think about why this is. Read about color theory and how you make colors pop with other colors. Practice this.
She should do a realistic challenge if she could and haven't done yet
That's a great idea! I'll put it on the list c:

Oh gOd
I'm just gonna say this so people are less confused when coloring. The right way to nice looking colors isn't over using pastels but it's all about complementaries. Believe it or not but choosing your back ground color is the first thing you need to do. Now you will find what you would usually color with but adjust it scording to how close it is to the background color on the color wheel. After that your colors should fit well together and look real to life rather than just "pastel" or "over saturated"
From artist to artist, well done :3
I like how you use soft colors, bright colors hurt my eyes

I'm crying at all the triggered people bc lavender called their bad way of shading amateur
I actually liked the really saturated version until you shaded it... it went to hell after that
Ahh man, same. It had potential at first, haha.

Lavender Towne,
I just want to say thank you for making this series.
You stopped me from turning into a cringy 11 year old that made deviantart cringe worthy art
Can I just point out how relaxing this video is? Getting to see some adorable art in progress and hearing such a soft calming voice...
