    @ beginner artists:
    The tips here are extremely helpful. Definitly take them into consideration! But remember, tips aren't absolute *laws*
    If you like neon colors, use neon colors! If you like to shade with black, go for it! Like the airbrush? Airbrush!
    These things look ameture when theyre sloppy and poorly thought out.
    but with *practice, thought, and balance,* it can be something cool!

      @lianasmith3161 11 місяців тому +2

      That's kind of funny because I have a character whose skin color in royal blue. And also good job for learning how to saturate the colors. :) I haven't yet tried to really saturate a whole lot of colors. I got the basics down, but that's about it. With time and effort I will learn. ^^ Anyways, great job. :D

    Tips for people who like neon colors:
    If you want to use them then go ahead. But a good compromise between soft and neon is to make a pastel character and then add neon as an accent color of sorts. Maybe make the eyes neon or the earrings or something. Using bright colors in small amounts can be eye catching but using them in large amounts, while looking unpleasing, can also be nauseating so keep that in mind aswell.

    • @lambybunny7173
      @lambybunny7173 3 роки тому +30

      There is a subset of art called eyestrain art that uses a small number of neon colors and uses them for the whole drawing, though. So if you like neon colors you can do that too.

    • @d00dle31
      @d00dle31 7 років тому +9

      Eh, don't worry about it. I just had to look it up, since I didn't know what it was either. Basically, it's shading without any distinguishable light-source. So, the outline of the entire object is shaded, while the center is highlighted (the end result looks somewhat like a circular gradient). A quick google search for 'pillow shading' will help clear things up.

    • @vikshere
      @vikshere 6 років тому +49

      +Matt Scashtodraw yeah but most younger artists dont have that skill. theyre beginners, so blending isnt always something that comes to mind. plus most color schemes are set. color pencils like crayola and such are readily available to young artists and they often come with very vibrant, saturated colors. i remember being young and pushing hard against the paper with a pencil of crayon to make the colors really pop. i never thought of desaturating anything until i had more experience.

      if you want to learn lighting, don't practice it with colors. it won't help. practice with black and white alone. use gray as your main color. and try to create a simple 3D object. like a ball or a cube. start from the basics. but you can't use fully white or fully black. cause this type of lighting rarely exist in real life. once you learn that look at color theory. and try to create a harmony or emotion using nothing bit color. play around with it. and than you should be able to draw it.

    If you don't mind me adding; an additional tip for painterly shading is to know what type of shadow you're making; if you're drawing, say, a ball on a table, the shadow that it casts on the table will have a hard edge, whereas the shading on the ball where it slowly turns away from the light will be softer; this helps define the shape of the form!

    A good cure for using the super bright colors - search for a photo of a sky with colors that seem very vibrant to you. Orange, blue, whatever. Load it in Photoshop. Take the color picker and use it on the most vibrant parts in the picture. See what color you get. Is it the most saturated and brightest orange/blue? No, most likely not. It's often in the middle of the palette, often very far to the left (less saturated) and bordering on grey. Still it LOOKS very orange/blue. Take a while to think about why this is. Read about color theory and how you make colors pop with other colors. Practice this.

    Sooo, I'm rewatching this years later, and I'd like to say something that isn't really touched on.
    It's more an issue of wording than anything else, but it should be said that you don't _have_ to avoid really saturated colors or mainly use pastels. It really depends upon what your specific art style entails. For example, I use pastels, just...not very often. I tend to prefer jewel tones and darker colors. It's more _how_ you use certain colors than _what_ colors you use. Also, stark white is not as big a no-no as you'd think. Sometimes you just cannot get the same effect with pastel blue or beige that you'd get with white. Same goes for black. The main reason I avoid using black has nothing to do with how it looks and everything to do with the fact that it makes it hard for me to see my lineart-I generally prefer a dark, saturated blue, dark brown, or dark grey, depending on what I'm going for.
    Also, I hate to be _that_ guy (or, well, girl), but the 'do' side looks...kind of flat. There's very little variation in value with that particular color scheme, and the eye isn't really drawn to anything.

  • @viteseul

    An art style is something you earn, not something you automatically get. Only once you've mastered (or nearly) the basics, for example, the principles of art, have you actually started on a path towards an art style. So saying coloring like the right is your style isn't valid. It clumsily breaks the 'rules' of art rather than modifying them or skillfully bending them. Being an 'art style' is not an excuse for sloppy composition.
    And if coloring however you please is fine, then what's the merit in being a professional?

    So, I'm actually 14, and even though its 2019 now and you made this three years ago, I really appreciate all of the tips that your channel displays. I am really putting thought into my drawings now and am glad I am getting these tips now rather than later in life and being worse at drawing when I'm younger. I absolutely LOVE your art and "Do's and Don'ts" series, and am taking it all into consideration as I draw. I just wanted to say thank you soooooo much and all of this is incredibly helpful in the long-run!

      I find that using the technique in this video is good for more cartoon-ish drawings, but if you're going for a more dark/serious composition you should pick and choose for every individual color's shadow.

  • @pixel-7388
    @pixel-7388 7 років тому +6

    I'm just gonna say this so people are less confused when coloring. The right way to nice looking colors isn't over using pastels but it's all about complementaries. Believe it or not but choosing your back ground color is the first thing you need to do. Now you will find what you would usually color with but adjust it scording to how close it is to the background color on the color wheel. After that your colors should fit well together and look real to life rather than just "pastel" or "over saturated"

      The right one is so far away from physics and realism, I'm sure many people would disagree. It's not just an opinion. Looks kinda childish.
      And I'm not saying that because it's not my "style." There are many successful cel shading artists out there.

    I actually LOVE bright vivid colors and contrast and like to use it in a lot of my drawings and photos. Though I'm not a super beginner (I've been drawing for 4 years I think), I feel like as long as you have a good color palette with complementing colors and some understanding of how contrast works, you can still make something look pretty cool. Also I have been in love with your art lately AND TO FIND YOU HAVE A COMIC TOO WOOO! Thanks for all the great vids

    • @annabelsun3991
      @annabelsun3991 7 років тому +19

      Well, you can use grey, still - she did mention that in the video - but you can also shade with a slightly more blueish tinge or yellowish tinge or whatever tinge you want to give it, depending on the lighting and situation? Basically, she's saying don't use a direct grey - add just a little bit of color into it. I hope I make sense, heh...

    • @snowpanda9125
      @snowpanda9125 7 років тому +5

      Derpy it's not that black and grey shadows are bad it's that it makes it look ya know sharp and dull so preferably I would use light color and also grey and black gives it a less colorful tone
      it's just advice but don't need to take it seriously

    • @lloydlloyd5721
      @lloydlloyd5721 7 років тому +3

      i think a good method to avoid having your drawing look flat, as well as making the composition more cohesive, is to shade using the colours of the background. like... bounce lighting. if your character is standing in a green forest use a really desaturated green-grey tone for shadows, and it should add more colour and interest to your character, as well as making the character 'fit in' with the background a little better. idk if i explained it correctly, but if you get it i hope it helps.
