Also to note, if a character is crying some people scrunch up their shoulders or try to look as small as possible. If you get the face down definitely work on body language or learn how to read it.
My art teacher does not even teach he only mentions shading but never teached it to the class and grades based on how finished the work is its almost like if he wasn't a teacher but i have learned a lot from this channel
My friend is usually laughing at me when I'm drawing facial expressions. That's because I always make face similar to a character I'm drawing. So when in class I look like I'm about to cry, she is sometimes worry because she thinks something might have happened. But she just looks that I'm doodling and she's like ,,ah ok she's just drawing again"
Another tip for anger: when you’re drawing the eyebrows, to fully express the focus and the rage in how a character’s feeling, try to keep the eyebrows as close and low to the eyes as you can. The higher the eyebrows on the forehead, the more surprised or confused they appear.

I love these "draw this, not that" videos of yours. When I watch them, I either learn something about how to improve my drawings, or get confirmation that I'm doing the right thing when I draw. Or both.
Haha at the end, the happy face to the left looks almost like a sarcastic smile Kinda just “Thanks!!! I hate it!!!” While the one to the right shows more actual happiness/gratitude
I don't really think she's the right person to ask. I mean, she does know how to draw hands, but her hands are basically three squiggles and a curved line.
very responsible friend Even if she draws her hands that way usually, I'm sure she isn't limited to just that. She could be good at other styles and just choose to do more cartoony things.
Whenever I draw facial expressions, I find myself *doing* the expressions, so I can get a feel of what the face is doing, and where features are placed. (I do it when I drawing in class sometimes, and I get some weird looks lol)
I just realized, Everytime I (or anyone else) draw extreme expressions, I make that expression too. ..and now it feels awkward to doodle intense stuff in public. :']
I do that too, and it's the funniest thing when I'm just...having a very intense disgusted/angry/"what the actual FUCK" kind of expression on my face as I sit and doodle in the most relaxed way possible.

I've been reading your comic: 'Unfamiliar', and I absolutely love your story telling and art style! All your characters are absolutely adorable and creatively constructed, and I'm really invested in them! The story is truly masterfully expressed throughout your frames. I can't wait to explore more of your work!
maybe do a video on what clothes to put your characters in, or their general design to show their personality? (your videos are really helpful, they help me progress loads with my art!)
oops...i did see that, but I thought that there could be something focusing in more detail on clothes and hair rather than basic body shapes and clothing shapes like the other video...if that makes sense
I'm not sure what video you guys are talking about buttttt there is the character design one where she goes over clothing and how to make it look nice. But meh. Even so, it would definitely be chill to get a new vid based solely on hair and clothing styles.
Yes, especially since I've seen so much art where even if the anatomy is OK, the artist put the characters in "clothes" that were just a random mess made of belts, or garish color combinations and so forth. Plus with fantasy settings, I've seen many artists fail to take the culture and technology of the setting into consideration, and we get things like characters with steampunk goggles on top of medieval armor and so on, there's plenty of material for a video on that subject.
I have so much trouble with unique looking faces, and have been working on curing my same face syndrome. This helped so so much, thank you Lavender, you’re awesome!!
Could you perhaps do a video on foreshortening with cartoon styles. I just find it so difficult to have it look right while still being more simplified.

Some people think that your not a good artist and have no right to give out artist advice? What is that about! You have a beautiful and unique style and your art advice has really helped me improve!
Thank you so much for these videos! I’ve learned a lot and I always keep your advice in mind when I’m posing. I try to keep my poses asymmetrical to give them character, and my facial expressions as well. I’ve used your coloring advice and your inking advice because my old art is a mess of aggressively inked neon colored anime art. Thanks for helping me grow and become a better artist!

could you make a video explaining how to draw a decent looking expression/face-shape from a side profile or an angle? i can't figure out how to do it without it looking weird and your videos help me a lot with certain things so i'd rlly appreciate it thank
One of the things I hate when people draw cartoon people in profile is when the nose and mouth sticks out too much, making the characters look like chihuahuas. I've seen it a lot in bad anime, but Anna and Elsa in Frozen also suffers from it.
Lavendertowne: a happy face, which will come up a lot when you have happy characters (or something along those lines) My angst-filled self: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA happy characters, what's that? never heard of her.
Please make more of these emotion videos! This really helped me out and I need some more info on the other emotions. I find it very easier with the way you explain it.
Oh! One thing I think you might've missed! To make the emotion even more intense and understandable, try changing the cheek and chin shape/placement. When the corners of the mouth are turned up, the cheeks tend to stick out a little more and the chin is shorter. When the corners of the mouth are turned down, the cheeks stick out less and the chin is longer. This tip is also very important to know when doing lip syncing animations! Not only does it make the letters/syllables clearer, but it can also make the words flow better and show a deeper emotion ^^ Thank you so much for all of the tutorials, btw!! They've really helped me out a lot 💕💕 Keep being amazing and have a great day/night!!
May I suggest for your next video drawing protagonists as villains, and maybe vice versa? It could be from Disney, anime, your favourite cartoons...anything!
The left happy drawing looks either like she's about to kill someone or she's dead inside. :') Thank you for this tutorial, definitely learnt a thing or two also not being afraid to move the nose around helps a lot with expressions aswell !!!
I just started watching your channel, holy wow am I an addict now. I absolutely love your style, and your advice is solid. Watching these really makes me want to dive back into drawing full throtle.
Something I noticed is that it seems to help when drawing expressions if you're specific about what emotion you're trying to portray. For example, for anger, the "do" drawing looks specifically offended or disgusted, like someone just said something shocking and horrible. And that's different from how one would draw spite, hatred, wrath, exasperation, indignation, etc. And each of those words makes me imagine a specific expression that carries so much more power than if I just try to picture an "angry" face.
It's so hard to show emotion in my style because of the eyes but I might change that up a little bit soon to make it easier. Anyways, the tutorial was really helpful and I love your style sooo much!
I’ve seen this video in my recommendations for 10 minutes thinking “oh that’s an old video”. I literally just realized that I could have been so early but no, I thought it was an old video ;-; anyways I needed this video, I suck at expressions
The crying expression on the "do" side. Why it he so cute? I just want comfort that character and protect him from all the sad. He's a wholesome lil bean.
With some of these, it ok to do the "dont''s" when practicing I do them alot when im drawing random sketches and doodles. Also, depending on style, the "do's" are the "dont's"
Honestly, you are one of a few artists I bring a higher liking to. Why? Well because of your style. I have more of a cartoon style rather than a relistic style and your art makes me feel like even I, can get better at art! Thank you!
when trying to draw very shocked emotions, i always look up 'shocked animal faces' as reference but i end up starting to laugh

Me: *remembers the few times I have been in enough emotional pain to cry over it*
Me:
Me:
Me: *feels me heart shatter and die inside of me*
"Think about how you would feel when you're sad"
Me who has autism and doesn't feel any emotions at all: "Well, how am *I* supposed to know that ?"
Whenever my face I totally relaxed I either look deep in thought, or highly annoyed, im often asked if im ok lol
could you make a video explaining how to draw a decent looking expression/face-shape from a side profile or an angle? i can't figure out how to do it without it looking weird and your videos help me a lot with certain things so i'd rlly appreciate it thank
One of the things I hate when people draw cartoon people in profile is when the nose and mouth sticks out too much, making the characters look like chihuahuas. I've seen it a lot in bad anime, but Anna and Elsa in Frozen also suffers from it.
You could do an 'draw this not that' for eyes, comic composition, or facial features
Lavendertowne: a happy face, which will come up a lot when you have happy characters (or something along those lines)
My angst-filled self: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA happy characters, what's that? never heard of her.
Calvin Pope same fam- all my characters are edgy gay bois
All mine are gay too, what am I, your art doppelganger?
Calvin Pope I relate far too much to this
we’re all twins
+Sebastian Michaelis but in ms paint
That’s a huge mood
Please make more of these emotion videos! This really helped me out and I need some more info on the other emotions. I find it very easier with the way you explain it.
Oh! One thing I think you might've missed! To make the emotion even more intense and understandable, try changing the cheek and chin shape/placement.
When the corners of the mouth are turned up, the cheeks tend to stick out a little more and the chin is shorter.
When the corners of the mouth are turned down, the cheeks stick out less and the chin is longer.
This tip is also very important to know when doing lip syncing animations! Not only does it make the letters/syllables clearer, but it can also make the words flow better and show a deeper emotion ^^
Thank you so much for all of the tutorials, btw!! They've really helped me out a lot 💕💕
Keep being amazing and have a great day/night!!
Yayy I love it when you upload! It's 2 am for me and i got told that my grandpa passed away a few minutes ago... :( really makes me feel better :)
May I suggest for your next video drawing protagonists as villains, and maybe vice versa? It could be from Disney, anime, your favourite cartoons...anything!
K o k i c h i ?
Cool idea
The left happy drawing looks either like she's about to kill someone or she's dead inside. :')
Thank you for this tutorial, definitely learnt a thing or two also not being afraid to move the nose around helps a lot with expressions aswell !!!
I draw my eyes in pretty much the most simple way ever. Link to my deviantart if you wanna see what I mean: imfruitloops.deviantart.com/
I've been waiting for a do this not that facial expressions! I always struggle with those.
I’ve seen this video in my recommendations for 10 minutes thinking “oh that’s an old video”. I literally just realized that I could have been so early but no, I thought it was an old video ;-;
anyways I needed this video, I suck at expressions
"Copying exactly the neutral face and changing just the mouth"
*changes the eyes*
The crying expression on the "do" side. Why it he so cute? I just want comfort that character and protect him from all the sad. He's a wholesome lil bean.
Ahh I’m on time ❤️ You’re such a big inspiration for me, I love you!!
Glad that I have time to watch this before church, have a good day everyone!!!
mckinleydraws for me its almost night--
That's great.
Another tip is to have a mirror/iPhone (with the camera on) near by so when you're drawing, you can get the facial expressions down better.
Thank you for these pointers.
Emotion is an unknown subject to me.
With some of these, it ok to do the "dont''s" when practicing I do them alot when im drawing random sketches and doodles. Also, depending on style, the "do's" are the "dont's"
Notifications Squad, where you at?!
Notifications are slow for me.
Here! (╹◡╹)
Can you do how to draw hair? ^^
You've emproved your artstyle :0
Honestly, you are one of a few artists I bring a higher liking to. Why? Well because of your style. I have more of a cartoon style rather than a relistic style and your art makes me feel like even I, can get better at art! Thank you!
I LOVE these do and don't videos, they're extremely helpful and super fun to watch! T^T
