1 Reason I Don't Switch to Full Frame and STAY With Micro Four Thirds (Photography Quick Chat)

  • After doing photography as hobby for many years, I learned that we don't need to spend too much on the latest and greatest camera gear. All that we need is just to know our own "good enough", to know the priorities of what we value from camera gears, and stick to it. This way, we don't get tempted to overspend on camera gear, and be able to not think about gear anymore, and start to focus on taking pictures, and enjoying photography.

    I went down this rabbit hole (4/3 to APS-C to Full to Medium Format) and agree with you about the law of diminishing returns. Ego, vanity and the pursuit of being a "better photographer" pushed me there. The best camera is the one you have with you. And that typically is a simple, inexpensive camera/lens that's "good enough" - for me it is an Olympus with a simple prime.

      Thank you for sharing. Agree with your point of the pursuit of being a "better photographer", that was also why I collected so many gears that are way overpowered for what I need.

      Wow, that is one rabbit hole you went through--from M4/3 to medium format! I've stuck with Micro Four Thirds since the E-P1 and I gotta admit, the FF lure is strong sometimes--until I realize that the "biggest" M4/3 setup I can put up with is "small" by FF standards! And I've harboured secret dreams of being able to afford a Fuji GFX camera some day...

    Hi Gary
    Spot on mate. My Q2 lies on a shelf gathering dust whilst I reach out 9 times out of 10 for the super Oly EM5iii (swapped a Z6 and two heavy Z primes) and my tiny 1.7 and 1.8 primes.
    Apart from being able to crop into the 47 megapixel Leica files, I often can't tell the difference between the 2 RAWS on a 5k screen!
    As for high ISO noise, the Oly is just as good if not better than the Q2 upto 6400!
    Long live M43.
    Keep those videos coming!

    Thanks Gary for this video, it's a "never die" topick, was thinking to add camera system to my G95 but at least for day light use, i found the kit lens 12-60mm (not leica) to be creating amazing details and it set high bar to beat (not to mention it's versitility, have also the 20mm 1.7 for low light) so it is much more difficult to give myself good excuse to buy new stuff, but for analog expiriance i may go for good 0.95 manual lens like Laowa 18mm and Brightin Star 35mm for mft.

      I got the Brightin Star 35mm and the Zhongyi Mitakon 17mm, both f0.95. Love 'em! Can't say I'm good enough to get the best out of them, but love 'em.

      I have the Mitakon Zyonghi 25mmm f/0.95 and it's a fun lens! Super nice bokeh, very close focussing, and super compact too. Photos from it definitely has a different "look" from my Panasonic 25mm f/1.4.

    I almost sold my M43 gear for full frame for wedding photography. But then DXO PhotoLab with Deep PRIME came out and decided not too. Also Luminar A.i. came out that can add more bokeh.
    When you sell your gear you really don't get a lot for it. Sometimes you do but most of the time you don't. So switching systems your going to spend a lot of money. And I had everything I needed for wedding photography with M43.
    Also when I shoot weddings I like to have two of the same cameras for color science and dual shooting.
    Other kinds of photography I think its ok to switch as its not as hard. But wedding photography you need backup gear and I have backup gear to my backup gear. I bring three cameras to every wedding. And there are stories of wedding photographers having two cameras break down on a wedding. It very rare but why take the chance.

      Thanks for sharing! Very good point regarding noise AI softwares now practically eliminating high ISO noise problem with M43.

    • @Centauri27
      @Centauri27 3 місяці тому +1

      Yes, you would have to absorb a big loss if you switched systems. Either that or try to sell each piece individually for the highest price possible, but that's a lot of work. I agree that the latest editing tools narrow the gap significantly against FF, when you consider Topaz Photo AI, DxO PureRaw, Luminar Neo, and the rest.

    I first got into photography in my teens with a second-hand m42 SLR. If you chose to listen to them, there was no shortage of gear-snobs ready to tell you there was no point taking yourself seriously as a photographer if you weren't using a medium format camera (no one was calling 35mm 'full frame' in those days), or the latest Canon/Nikon AF equipment. Photography has always been a trade-off between what you can afford, what you can carry, and the theoretical upper limit of what your camera can do. All this fuss about the lastest gear, yet most of the world's truly great photographs were taken on cameras less sophisticated than the earliest Lumix G1. ISO 1200 used to be specialist fast film and you just accepted the noise and grain.

    For various reasons I'm doing more street and low light photography now and for the foreseeable future and my go to camera is the Lumix GX9 with either the 15mm f1.7 for low light or the PL 12 - 60mm f2.8 -4.0 for day light sessions. However, the m43 system in some low light situations struggles to deliver the higher shutter speeds needed to freeze movement, without resorting to using higher ISO settings (3200 +) which are just too noisy, and become flattened when processed using DeNoise software. So... I'm looking at switching to Fujifilm - the XT5 with the flip screen and a couple of fast primes and the 16-80mm zoom will meet my needs, or will it!??? It's a difficult decision to make as I have been a loyal user of m43 for many years. Any advice please Gary?

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  3 місяці тому +1

      My only experience with Fuji was using the X-E2 back in the days. It produces good image quality but AF is way slower than M43. Nowadays it is quite a bit faster but single AF still isn't as fast as M43. I had a chance to try an X-T4, better but I still feel my GX85 was much snappier in single AF. But low light IQ is definitely better on Fuji. I don't know if this helps or not, I apologize if I make you even more confused 😅

      🎉@@Gary_W That's very helpful Gary. Many thanks for responding so quickly. I'm wondering if a possible cheaper alternative to help with my low light/noise problem would be to buy the PL 12mm f1.4 prime. Being wider and 2/3 of a stop faster than the PL 15mm f1.7 should allow the 1/120s shutter speed I need to freeze people walking (if I'm lucky!), and a much needed lower ISO - hopefully below 3200. Currently, Amazon UK are offering this lens at a 35% discount , and after reading many very positive reviews about this lens, although expensive, I'll give it a try.

    I think the biggest reason for me to switch to FF at this point, is so I can buy vintage manual lenses without having to take the crop factor into account.
    And even then, I'd just be doubling up on focal length FOVs that I already have for M43. 😅

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  3 місяці тому +1

      That's a valid reason though, I think it could be annoying if you ended up having to multiply crop factor everytime you are using the lens 😁

    Good enough? Often the G80 with the Lumix 12-60 f3 5-5.6. But when the light is low then I need the G9 with an f1.7 prime lens. At least when it comes to pictures, not video.

      @@Gary_W both you and prefer smaller camera and lenses so mft is rather obvious for us. And since neither of us are professionals than mft is more than good enough. My G9 is argueably a so much better camera technically than my GX9 or G80 but it is only now after more than a year that I have come to like it. It is technicaly a better camera than the G80 but is it 2-3 times better. Probably not but it costs that much more so as you say: diminishing returns.

  • @GrimYak

    some people have shitty cameras but take great pictures, there are others who are on the other end of the spectrum. an expensive camera doesn't make you a better photographer similar to having money to buy an F1 car doesn't make you a good F1 driver.
