7.5k offlaner here, there's a lot of nuance that just can't fit into a 10 minute video but I think you did a really good job explaining the most basic gameplan of how offlane should work. I'll send this to lower ranked friends that ask me about offlane advice.
@@davidvogt24 Khezu has a video on how to recover from bad lanes by watching Collapse play, Saberlight streams on twitch sometimes and is pretty educational and entertaining. Otherwise I recommend using d2pt to find offlaners with a playstyle you want to emulate and watch what they do. I aim to make some guides myself at some point but we'll see if I get around to it
what do you do in those situations where the support doesnt pick until 2nd phase, and you are forced to 1st phase pick? Then if you have picked a melee, and they go a second melee hero (4), and you are faced with a genuinely strong safelane that has a good balance of range and melee? Usually you see pudge, earthshaker, etc, and other very weak melee laners that dont contribute well and make it very hard to get anything out of the lane. Any advice?
@@JosipIvka tbh you just lose, I hate when that shit happens. Best I can do if my 4 won't pick or even give me a hint of what they're picking is pick something consistent like Dark Seer or Centaur that's hard to shut out of lane. They're good at recovering post lane
You completely called me out, and I appreciate it! I’ve always moved around after taking the tier 1 in hopes of winning other lanes and keeping the momentum up, but I’m glad you pointed out how letting the safelaner farm freely is basically throwing away the momentum you’re trying to build

Im 4k offlaner. And yes i did mistake like after take t1 tower. I rotate for other t1. But after some game i realize its better to controlling enemy safelane. 100% agree
Hit Guardian 2 today. this vid came in clutch and helped a lot. I especially love the tip of buying wards to farm in their jungle and keep bullying their safe lane after taking their tower. GAME CHANGER. Everything here helped me but that was the thing I wasn't doing at all and left the lane after killing the tower shutting down the first 10 mins of the carry. I especially felt it when the WK safe lane kept complaining about after the game to his teammates that I didn't leave him alone all game as Tide XD.
5k Offlane main here. It's interesting how I reflect this video onto the heroes that I play - the most succesfull offlane heroes I have are the ones I can confidently pull off the "Harass enemy safelane and farm their jungle" off. Any and all other offlaners are mediocre at best. Fun correlation I had not thought of.
5k safelaner here, trying to understand the offlane role more, can you give me EXAMPLES of your most successful offlane heroes for the job u just described?

brand new player to dota 2 here. Started playing Dragon knight which i read is suitable for offlaanes and this video really helped. Managed to keep the offlane occupied for a long time, although i lack skills to get kills i held the enemy for pretty long and resulted in them not levelling up, so i still consider it a success. Great tip
This feels like it's finally explaining to me the basic concepts that are beginner friendly without being "click on creeps to get gold! Click your keyboard to do spells!" Incredible video and love your offlane content
Awesome guide! I know you already have a very detailed guide with a checklist for carry, but I really like this video where you express the high-level philosophy and approach to the game. The carry guide feels a bit overwhelming since there are so many items, and I'm not sure about the overall mindset/approach, so I'd love a video for "How to Play Carry like an IMMORTAL" etc as well.
Vanguard is gold item for offlaner to get as first item, to take early t1, farm camps and to be to be able to farm ancients as soon as you can and also not to be easy hero for potential gank from mid or their position 4. Then you get boots(first mana regen., if it is Arcane) and other items. Turning Vanguard into Crimson later, can be good aura protection for your teammates(buffed item from 7.36). I am even getting Vanguard on Dark Seer as first item, then mana regen, boots and then Dager and other needed items. So much success with this tactic.
What should your Pos4 do in the early game after the safe lane tower is downed? Should they go help the team, or do they stay with the offlaner and try to find the enemy’s pos 1?
The pos 4 would help the pos 3 secure the entire enemy safelane and jungle with wards before attempting to leave (or until an urgent scenario happens like tp dive to save or counter gank that presents itself).
Hey Balloon, great video! Do you have a word doc with the script in? It would be really great if I could have it on my 2nd monitor for when I'm playing. Thank you!
@@BalloonDota its about the starting items you discussed. I watched a lot of Gabbi and Collapse, and they tend to start the game with 0 regens and maximize stats to trade more efficient then sending out regens as the first courier trip.
@@quediezmo680 This is because in higher mmr games, the supports are generally more inclined to give them regen to sustain in lane. They want to start with more stats for health and trading ability because high level dota starts trading in lane very very early. Whereas in lower brackets you don't really know how your support in lane is thinking or whether or not they will have prepared regen for you/even start at lane with you. Hope that makes sense.
Awesome video, will he trying this. Im about 2k mmr, are there any heros you would recommend thst are quite forgiving in these priciples? I am currnetly focusing on dk and abaddon. Should i look to go more for axe/mars/tide?
Lane dominators are generally preferred to be able to start this movement as early as possible. Examples are Primal Beast, Dawnbreaker, Dragon Knight is okay, Death Prophet, Razor, Omniknight, Abaddon, Slardar
The stats build is easy to convert to Agility and Intelligence offlaners, but what would you recommend as a stats build for offlane Universal heroes? I've gone double circlet triple branch tango or double circlet double branch quelling tango based on instinct but would like to hear your thoughts. Seems a lot of immortal players go either double circlet triple branch tango or 4/5x branch and tango getting a quelling with 4 branches build
Im 7k offlaner i like range universal heroes a lot because u just enemy carry and wins lane and u have insane damage and tanky because u have many stats heroes like ww, enigma, wr, etc over all like to go magic wand 3x branch or 2 circlet 3 branch tango and sentry because as a offlaner your enemys small camp should always be blocked i hope i was little bit of help peace :)))
5:18 this is definitely something i need to do when ahead, grabbing obs and denying enemy jungle after t1 down is huge. could you go over how to approach teamfights as pos 3? at least for melee initiator since that's mostly the meta. i've been trying to focus on more backline kills and getting out (not hard committing until we have cd/hero advantage) but jumping in first is hard especially once you're behind
I felt personally called out when you said 99% of offlaners transition to each tower after taking tier 1 haha. Eye opening video will focus more on bullying the safelaner. QQ though. How about if you are playing against an enemy carry that has potential to kill you if you try to bully them. Eg: Im always afraid of Jug post level 6 since he can just melt me with ult. So in these cases it feels like Im just pushing the deadlane into them and they get to farm
Hi bro, as long as you can move forwards without risk of death then that would always be the ideal play. In cases where the carry is a threat or a potential gank from missing heroes is possible, then just chill and farm safely (their camps still if possible, push the wave safely with spells without showing to right click wave) or just go back to your own camps/pull camp for lane to push back to your side again.
After looking back at my games, I realise I have very good win rate when I play like this from a pos 5 pos as a warlock. My offlane always go around all over the map anyway.

You would keep up the pressure in their jungle for as long as you can until the enemies try to do something against you. Once that happens, and you clearly can't return to keep up pressure there again, just retreat to your triangle to farm and spam pull the big camp for the wave to come closer until a fight breaks out somewhere else that requires you to go to.

Usually when this happens i m alone because supports go elsewhere when tower is taken, I guess i should ward for myself and try to dodge ganks better
