I love jewel orchids. They are one of my favorite terrestrial plant. They grow great in the ground in part sun or in a pot here in FL. They get a beautiful, long stem of little white flowers. So pretty..Enjoy them!
Hi Danny- I have 3 jewel orchids (2 macodes species (petola and sanderiana) and a unique ludisia cross with anoetochilus (red/green leaves and bright red veining - a real jewel in my opinion)) which arrived as small cuttings and have taken a couple of months to “settle in”. I use a mix of soil, perlite, charcoal and fine bark and they seem to like it. Interesting how such variations exist. Ultimately I’m hoping that all 3 will grow to “specimen” plants although it will likely take many years. I think the shimmering aspect is quite special and definitely provide a unique character to orchid growing. Thanks for showing your jewel orchids. 👍
What’s crazy is my Ludicia died , rotted - My Mecodes Petola is thriving! Mine is in soil too topped with bark in a terrarium , if I had to pick one to survive it would be MP tfs 👍🏼🌱
I just found your channel - I just got my first jewel orchids yesterday! I’m in Colorado, so I am planning to keep them in a terrarium, but keep them in their own pots. Thank you for all the great info!
Hi Danny. Years ago I came across a Ludicia in a nursery, but was probably the last in the lot and fairly mangled so refrained from trying to tackle it's issues. Haven't seen a Ludicia anywhere since and ... No regrets (?) until I see you working with yours. Yes looks much more comfortable in new setup on table.
Absolutely love the Macodes petola, I hesitated before getting it but oh my under the sunlight the leaves are just so beautiful and sparkly ! I am hoping to keep it alive, I also got the Macodes sanderiana Danny it's very sparkly too get it next time haha :) Love your colourful little table by the way it always makes me wanna travel to Brazil somehow ahaha
Beautiful leaves! I have a cross of ludisia discolor x anoectochilus roxburghii, also lovely. My dream is to collect many different types and create large dish garden for the bottom shelf in my orchid room, They are not easy to find here.
I have one in sphagnum moss and during the winter it's cool. It came in sphagnum moss but should I move it into a mix of bark and peat soil or leave it in the sphagnum?
I just took delivery of a tiny jewel orchid, it's as big as my thumb. The leaves have gorgeous gold veins. Gonna repot it using 75% soil and 25% orchid mix. Got a gomesa radicans too but can't find any info on how to care for it
Hi Danni, I've always wanted both Jewel Orchids which I LOVE, but especially the Ludisia,!! I also don't like perlite but it does help!! May I ask where did you order them from?💖🤗
i potted my macodes petola into soil mix it was in moss before i one of stems was rotting so i cut it off the bad part and stuck it in water to see if it will root
Have you ever seen a lepanthes calodytictyon for sale? I can’t find them anywhere and I’m starting to thing maybe no one actually sells them. Also, thank you so much for the lesson on how to cover a drainage hole.
it would depend on where you live, but i have seen a couple places in the US that sell the lepanthes calodictyon. i just searched online and found it on both New World Orchids and Seattle Orchids (it looks like they're both out of stock right now but I'm sure you could ask when they'll have more). i hope you'll be able to find it in your area!
Hi, just saw that you reside in Nicosia, Cyprus where temoerature ranges from 42° to 32° through the year. It is very hot climate. How do you manage to grow many orchids effortlessly? I am also in tropical climate in India, but my orchids get dehydrated very soon.. 😧
If it has root rot than you should cut the affected parts of your plants (that includes the roots) otherwise the rot won't stop. If there are no roots left than you can put your orchid in water or in sphagnum moos to let the roots grow again. It will take a time to rehab the plant but you definitely can do it :)
I got a small Ludicia about a month ago and one of the leaves lost its color :( I repotted it and it does have a nice root and a the new growth is doing good. Should i cut off the faded leaf?
We have an orchid native to my area called "Rattlesnake Plantain" (Goodyera oblongifolia) and whenever you bring up one of your beautiful jewel orchids it reminds me of it, because it has the most beautiful jeweled leaves. linnet.geog.ubc.ca/Atlas/Atlas.aspx?sciname=Goodyera%20oblongifolia I found some in the woods behind my housing complex and it felt like being in a magic fairy woods.
Oh, they are all part of the Goodyerinae subtribe, that explains it! The Ludisia also reminds me of a plant that I saw a lot as a child. It's kinda fun how favourite houseplants can be popular between continents.
I just got a Ludisia Discolor as a present. I will definitely change my potting mix to soil. Yours look absolutely gorgeous! Thanks Danni

I like the new repotting set up! The new orchids look like they will be exciting once they have a chance to be healthy and happy!
Normally not a fan of jewel orchids but the sparkly parts are adorable 😊
Two little cuties, looking forward to seeing how they grow!
Beautiful and wonderful orchids, they charmed me❤
You give me way too much confidence for this plant hahaha

I wish my Ludisia looked that good. Mine has slowly gotten redder and redder over time - perhaps too much light?

Hello,
Did it work, when you put the cutting in water?
Did you get good roots?
I don't know why my new leaves not open up all the ways. They curve or just open Half way. Any suggestions please
Can you use a good african violet soil for these types of orchids?

I have root rot on my macodes petola. I want to repot it, should i remove the rot root? It doesnt have any other root :(

So three beads of slow release fertilizer each pot but how often?
Hi, once a year is enough with the Osmocote Pro High K ☺️
I need a Jewel orchid☹️
I repoted my macodes in soil and perlite and the roots rotted pretty quickly.
I put it in terrarium and the root rot! What should i do? Remove the only root which it rotted?
How can these plants be reproduced?
