It’s the quality of the ingredients too. In France, you can get a simple « jambon-beurre » sandwich. It’s three ingredients: slices of ham in a baguette with butter. It might sound too simple. But when you consider it’s a quality, crunchy baguette, with a very good ham and butter from the Normandy region of France (the very best butter you will ever taste!), it is on a whole other level. It’s those little details that make a big difference.

    • @perryroobay

As an USian this was my precise experience. Their jambon beurre is a revelation and like chasing the dragon here anywhere in the states to find an equivalent.

I agree this simple sandwich in France is beyond delicious. As a Canadian, I like to vacation in the USA. I enjoy the friendly people and the diversity of the geography. But I have to say that American food is rather sad. Everything is over processed, and much of it has too much salt and/or sugar. Sometimes it is a challenge to find a decent meal that doesn't include deep fried food. And the bread in the USA is the world's worst. Much could be learned from the French, or other Europeans.

I really miss it. I wish the US had markets like that other than just on a Saturday or Sunday, depending on where you live. There are markets every day in Paris and it's so great to shop that way. The thing is, Parisians and most other Europeans so not have the big refrigerators and freezers that we do so daily shopping or close to daily shopping is what they do.
