Just installed 4 of the 8 in the pack based on your video. A lot brighter than before. Now I can see what I am doing. I will finish the other 4 tomorrow.
Nicely done! My own garage lighting enhancement was to add a motion-sensing socket adapter to the one switched bulb socket [which I leave on]. To that I added a one-to-five bulb converter [using 5000K LED bulbs]. You get a better light spread with those long LEDs, but the motion-sensing aspect gives me light longer if I linger in the garage [versus the relatively short garage door opener timer]. I used a socket converter like you did for my one switched bulb socket in my basement, and then added Barrina LEDs to every other floor joist. Had to do one just splice. Tremendous upgrade!
Thank you for this video. You made making this upgrade straightforward and simple. It's made a huge difference. Instead of using a socket to outlet I used a Leviton outlet and bulb socket adapter and put in an LED nightlight bulb to fit in the diffuser housing so it still lights up.
Thank you..... it’s been a while that I was looking to upgrade my lighting in the garage to led’s ... and to attach it to the opener is brilliant... good job
Matt, I think the reason why the opener light indicates a 75 watt bulb is because incandescent bulbs larger than 75 watts are very hot and would melt the plastic cover of the opener.
Wow dramatic change and loving the output of the lights very clean install good job keep it up! Now im hoping mg garage on my channel be as bright as your garage.
Thanks Matt: Your mention of the Socket Adapter (in which I had one sitting in a box for 25 years) will now be used to convert my garage door opener bulb socket to plug in a repurposed lamp socket and cord that I will mount & strap on my garage door opener hangers and point the repurposed light towards my entry way door for MUCH needed extra light. Thanks for you video !
For those of you that are more electrical tech savvy and want more lights you can. I converted my garage into a woodworking shop and installed 6 - 4ft flourescent light fixtures (each with 2 -40W bulbs for 480 watt total which draws 4 amps ). I connected them all in parallel with wiring run in the attic. I ran a dedicated 15 amp circuit to the line side of 20amp /120v coil contactor (approx $18) and the load to the lights. I connected the contactor coil (which draws has
I did this exact same mod to my opener last year, and I really love it. I spaced my lights out a bit more, and then added more controlled by the light switch by the door. It is a truly significant difference going out into my garage now, you can easily see and when pulling your car in on just the ones controlled by the opener, it really helps as our garage is still a bit cluttered. Great Video!
I did the same thing about 8 years back, but the light bars were more expensive then. My main door is 18' wide and 8' tall, and I now have to ceiling mounted light sockets about 3' on each side of the opener motor, and then a pair of those 3 paddle lights that kicks out a lot more light. My opener had 2 bulbs originally, so I still have one bulb in the unit itself. I often wonder if anyone has ever though of putting LED strips right on the door, and then have some sort of 12v spring loaded contact system so the lights get power when the door is all the way open. With my main door, it's so big that when it's open at night, it's a large unlit area. I would think 12V DC would be safe for this, as LED are very low amp, but I have never actually seen anyone do it. Amazon actually sells a number of "popo pin" magnetic 12V connectors that could work. Imagine when you door is open all the way, it turns on lights right on the door that is now overhead. Again, never seen it done, but seems possible to do.
Great idea. I will look into this as well. You were concerned with the look of linking the 2 lights together, but you used black zip ties instead of white? Also, maybe consider replacing the beige outlet cover with white.
Great Video, I added a battery backup to my garage door opener because it didn’t come with one and I don’t have a side entire door, in a power outage the light for the opener is awful and I need more if I have a power outage for hooking up the generator for back feeding.
that 75 W label is mostly for HEAT generated by the Bulb so it does not melt plastic. OTOH there is a limit on the switching circuit and the power cord/outlet.
Some LEDs do not play nice with garage door openers. They provide radio interference with the transmission of the remote to the receiver. I experienced this when I replaced the bulbs on my Chamberlain with LEDs. Opening the door was no problem as the lights were off. Once the LEDs came on, the door would not close with the remote. That is why they sell special LEDs for garage door openers.
I agree, there are some LED's that will interfere with a garage door opener antenna, in this case I have no no issues with the LED's I have linked in the description. Thanks for watching!
My lights (same brand) came with a ground pin on the connection. Totally screwed up plans to install this way. Not sure why yours only came with two pins.
I did that mod on my old opener and the range of my remote dropped to just outside the door. Before that I could open it coming up the driveway so it was fully open by the time I got to the garage. After going to LED light, I had to wait until I was right up to the door. My new door installer said to just use regular light bulbs or florescent bulbs instead.
Gotta say I have never had this issue and I have a long driveway, it opens from the street. I’m sure it likely depends on the opener and antenna though!
yes, alot LED lights will interfere with the newer garage door opener frequencies. Tons of stuff on it online... They also sell some RF blockers you can put on the power cords for the lights that are supposed to block some of the frequencies... not sure if they are effective or not
@@chadhickey9942 That's the good thing about this modification, people experience interference because they replace the bulb inside the opener with an LED. This mod has the lights on your ceiling far away from the antenna just like all your other garage lights. I have zero antenna performance issues with this configuration in my video.
Did you have any issues with interface when closing/opening your door? (Only seems to happen when the lights are actually lit) I had an issue after installing led lights. I read something about it and figured I'd try different cfl or incandescent bulbs. It fixed the problem, but the lighting is back to suck.
I did not have this issue, just for my own testing I just went out and checked my 3 garage doors, no issues operating the remote when the lights were on. This interference is certainly real as I have heard of it before but the leds I have linked in the description are working great for me.
Thanks for a great video! I have a question about signal interference between the garage door opener and the LED lights themselves. Have you had any interference issues with opening or closing the doors with this type of lighting system?
I have a bunch of Barrinas in my garage since early 2019,, 18 to be exact,, and with thousands of hours on them they've been flawless I'm proud to say.. But,,, are you sure that 2 of those actually pull 40 watts,, seems high..
Will this interfere with my chamberlain liftmaster signal? I hear LED lights can do that. Didn't know if positioning of where the LED lights are matters?
Hey, certain lights can interfere with openers, in my case I am having no issues with the products I have linked below. I can open/close my garage door from beyond my driveway with the lights on and I have a pretty long driveway.
I like your approach. I did something similar, but I used an LED bulb (11 watt, about $3) in a remote electrical box above opener, plug in also. These are general lights not task lights. I prefer to use a task light depending on what I am doing. General lighting is only to see where you’re going, so you don’t trip or bump into something. If you’re going to work on car, etc. you still need another light. Thanks….Jim PS…..Your preference!
@@MattCoykendall1 Good to know thanks! I'll be putting my set up in a month or two and the obvious concern is failure rate/replacement availability etc. Appreciate the reply.
That's great to hear Matt. I've read mixed reviews on both Amazon and UA-cam about the longevity of these cheap LED lights. I plan to do something similar to what you did, and at $50 per eight tubes, I'll buy new ones if they don't last. Thanks for the quick reply.
It seems to me it'd be easier to just replace your regular garage light switch with a motion detector switch. That way any time there is movement in your garage, all the lights come on. $20 at Home Depot...

I hooked up the same lights but must have some type of interference. When the lights are on the remote opener doesnt work.

The Description area has a few links, one of which looks broken - the one to turn the garage into the sun seems to not work.

When you walked into the garage the first time it has the appearance you were going to stumble upon a dead body in there 😂 much nicer with more light
but at least the light was nicer right
