    Zu is not where I'd look for outright sound performance but they offer creative solutions in old school designs. In house drivers, made in USA, cool little company, I'd be proud to own a pair in a 'vintage' 2 channel stereo

    No such thing as wrong measurements. Measurements are what they are and how you interpret them is subjective. Until we can determine what is objectively "good" sound (which is, frankly, impossible) measurements are only helpful in identifying severely flawed designs. Which is, of course, the point of your excellent video. BTW I prefer my music served with a side of fine malt whisky (or a good Japanese blended - Im not parochial).

      I never understood the religion around the Harmon curve for instance, first off it’s still only a slight majority of people who prefer it and of those sampled, a lot were employees of Harmon. That’s automatically bad science since most have a greater exposure to the audio industry than the average person.

  • @jimfarrell4635

    Zu are not easy to find in Scotland, but I recently purchased a pair of single driver, full range floorstanders from Icon Audio. With low power tube amps they are genuinely special. The synergy is astonishing, especially with acoustic and jazz music. What they are not, is all rounders, and I suspect that may apply to Zu also. I have come to the conclusion, you may need two systems to suit all kinds of music without compromise.

    I heard these at CAF last year. They reminded me of Cerwin Vega from the 70s. I love the high efficiency speakers. It enables great flexibility with amplification. Did you say the cost? Aren’t they around $1500?

    I don't buy this whole narrative that you either get lively or audiophile sound. If the recording is dynamic and lively, the audiophile system should reproduce it with all the energy. I think that on the market we've got a lot of very expensive speakers that are very poorly designed, hence the boring sound. On the other hand I totally agree that the only person that should like the system is the owner and no one has right to tell others what sound they should like :)

    Nice presentation and view on audio in general. Some folks like Klipsch, Zu, and tube amps and some don't. It's nice to have choices.

      I totally agree, I am not here to tell anyone what they can or can't listen to. I just want to share my thoughts and hopefully give a clear picture what the product is like to live with day to day.

    It's funny. While watching this I was guessing that if I looked at other reviews, I was going to find a lot of negativity because of this video's implying that the speaker measures poorly. Well. Everything I'm finding is rave reviews. Didn't see Erin doing a review. Maybe he wouldn't like it because he's pretty measurement focused?

    • @MattCoykendall1
      @MattCoykendall1 Годину тому

      Erin is certainly an objective reviewer but does mix in his subjective thoughts as well. I would imagine he would highlight some things during measurements but hard to say how we would feel about these overall.

    I had purchased the Zu Audio Omen Dirty Weekend Mk.II in 8/2021. After around 300hrs I did put them back in the box as they never sounded good to my ears. Using several Tube amps and gave them to a friend. Funny that GR-Research did a tear down and the Tweeter was an issue...which I do agree and also lacked Bass.

    • @MattCoykendall1
      @MattCoykendall1 Годину тому

      That’s fair not every speaker will match up to the characteristics you prioritize. I can also say there have been a number of changes since the MKII but I won’t be able to speak on my thoughts as I didn’t personally hear the MKII. My only comment on the GR video was his fix was selling his own tweeter, it’s a theme over there.

      @@MattCoykendall1 Not shilling for Danny, but he is running a business. If a customer brings him a speaker it is about 90% certain he will find problems using his methods. I think the best thing he does is educating consumers on the realities of the speaker industry. You are very correct that these speakers are controversial. Some love them, some hate them, very few have no opinion. If the sound works for you, go for it.😁

  • @MrCambo5150

    I have the DWX’s. I think your review was spot on. The Zu sound is polarizing. There’s no perfect speaker. My Zu’s are amazing with some genres and some tracks. And not so great at others. But for my Blue Note Jazz, I haven’t found a better speaker. I did the Jupiter Capacitor upgrade. It tamed the brightness. So much so that I add a little treble via tone control here and there. I believe your super fly editions have the clarity capacitors. That might be the reason they sounded a bit forward from time to time.

    • @MattCoykendall1

    TBH this makes sense. Eliminate the x-over over in the pathway and let the drivers filter out the frequencies. Isn’t that the reasoning behind bi-wire/amp dual binding posts?

    • @rehn1kri
      @rehn1kri 2 години тому

      Dual binding posts are unrelated to bypassing the crossover. It just allows you to use a different wire or amplifier for each segment. The internal speaker crossover is still used.

    • @ruvamsi
      @ruvamsi 53 хвилини тому

      Active speakers that use a decent DSP based crossover also eliminate crossover pitfalls but mostly rejected by audiophile types

  • @JohnScheppler
    @JohnScheppler 3 години тому

    I've only listened to them for a very short time. I would consider this in the "fun party type" speakers. Bigger speakers from the 90s had this sound like Cerwin Vega and KLH are two I can think of. I don't need an "audiophile" speakers I like fun too

    • @MattCoykendall1
      @MattCoykendall1 2 години тому

  • @nukadog1969
    @nukadog1969 3 години тому

    I was considering the DW6, but what caught me out was that the reviews say these are very directional. I want a solid sound triangle, but I often listen quite off axis during my work day, so I want something with better vertical dispersion. Unfortunately, it appears that to get that quality in a US-made product, Klipsch Heresy IVs are the threshold.

    • @MattCoykendall1
      @MattCoykendall1 3 години тому

      A lot of speakers are quite directional, it's just a matter of degree. I get it though, it just depends on your use case and room configuration.

    • @Artcore103
      @Artcore103 35 хвилин тому

      JTR Noesis > Klipsch Heresy Expensive but see Joseph Crowe speakers as well And have a look at the Autotech hORNS FP-15 oaudio Verdande and Icon 12 JBL 4367 or M2 Approximately infinitely better than a Klipsch Heresy, which in comparison are quite colored and tailored to the vintage crowd as they are merely slight iterative improvements of very old designs, are not full range, and do not measure exceptionally well, with inferior polars, frequency response, and some other factors depending on model... crossover design, CD choice/distortion, etc. They have their strengths, but significantly more limitations than some designs like the above. You might trade a few db in absolute efficiency but why not choose a woofer/design with double or more the xmax and power handling and a half an octave at least better extension, if not a full octave? There are also better horn geometries depending on one's goal or preference i.e. what horn performance factors they prioritize - although the Jubilee specifically with a K-402 and axi2050 is quite good although there are better CD's for some metrics. The big boy (largest) Klipsch horn/CD combo is good, but everything else is lacking, and you could do better with DIY or several smaller manufacturers options. For example, horn lovers in DIY forums are often into using K-horns but build things much better than actual Klipsch speakers. Klipsch speakers (the heritage line that is) also typically lack good bass extension and output because of their design choices. You can have a high efficiency speaker that can give you raised harman curve type output down to 30hz or lower easily but you won't get that out of the box with Klipsch, and even though EQ (/dsp) is the most sensible way to achieve this, you need the right box and port tuning and driver choice, and since the Klipsch isn't designed for that purpose EQ alone won't get you there the same way other designs can. If you're running subs then I suppose that doesn't matter. With a Heresy even to cross at 50-60hz would likely require EQ to progressively boost below 100hz, and without a sub that speaker is just a no go imo.

    What I don't get, how do people justify spending $500 on a machine to play a CD. But then you need an external DAC. For $500 why can't the machine play the disc good enough on its own. Don't buy a stupid CD / Blu-ray player that does not have control buttons and a screen. There's plenty of older players out there that have full functionality. No need for an extra screen.

    I am a cheapskate but I think my setup is actually quite good for the price. Using a 20+ year old Sony DVD player (DVP-Ns575p/S Progressive Scan) with a coaxial digital output into a similarly old Yamaha receiver with a built-in DAC. Works flawlessly and sounds like pure gold to my ears, and I have listened to extremely pricey setups. The truth is that you really don't need a ton of money to get good sound, and anyone telling you otherwise is trying to separate you from your money.

    I have the perspective of someone who began collecting and listening to music in the late 60s. Honestly, during my lifetime, music has mostly been just “background” for most people most of the time. People used to do much of their listening over their home, portable or car radios, which provided pretty terrible audio quality. Small living spaces? My first apartments were glorified closets. With paper walls. Today people have access to great-quality audio gear at a full range of price points. Headphones and IEMs offer options for those in cramped quarters. Thanks to ChiFi and companies like Schmitt, you can find very good amps, dacs, speakers, headphones, IEMs, etc. at affordable prices. And the number of companies out there producing gear at all price points suggests there is a substantial, continuing market. I don’t think anyone needs to worry about hiring in the long run. Will the tech continue to change? Sure. Will tastes in music change? Of course. Will listening preferences and styles change? Yeah. One of the biggest changes in my time has been the shift to portability-streaming over your phone with decent IEMs, wired or wireless, or a good Bluetooth headset, means we can listen to all the music we want, anywhere, anytime, at quite decent quality. It’s marvelous.

    These Daytons remind me of the old school, original, Henry Kloss-designed Cambridge Soundwork lines. Cheap, binding posts, exceptional sound.....why not? I have four of these as my surround channels, including the matching center channel, towers and the 12 inch sub.... amazing. My home theater is at a new level. This dude says pretty good....they're better than pretty good. I think the main factor are the rubber surrounds on the woofers. I researched these against other mid-level models.....simple and gold-plated binding posts. It's a no-brainer coming from a long-time home theater enthusiast who's been there and done that. These are America's best kept audio secret. Highly recommended.

    Thanks for the review! I supported them on Kickstarter and hopefully they start shipping by end of the month. The output toggle button is a game changer for me. As a soundblaster user, I always have my headphones plugged in and wired under my desk, so this is great. I do have some questions though: 1. Is the volume control independent of output? Does it remember each output's volume level or is it a global control? 2. Does the volume level also control Windows volume simultaneously? Cheers and thanks!

    Many bluray outperform expensive cd'c palyer. Trust your Ear. Those called audiophile ate making money from the fools. Invest in good Dac good Amp power and decent speakers enjoy your music.

    #10 on your list is the one that I find most disappointing. People don't "listen" to music any more. They "have music on" while doing something else.

    Other problems are that everything is the same. All the cool hifi companies were bought out by conglomerates. There are no hifi shops.

    What kills it for me, is that given all of those dip switches, having to choose between 36 and 48dB gain for MM misses what is best for most carts, around 40-42dB.

    I recently bought an Acura RLX, and it's got a 14 speaker Krell system. Apparently Acura engineers worked side by side with people from Krell designing the car around the system; right down to the materials choice for the speakers themselves and the grills, placement, etc. The result is an amazing sound system. I've never heard my old music with such clarity before. The only downside is that I feel the system is really lacking bass, as bass-heavy genres like hip-hop and EDM just don't punch very hard like they did on some of the other premium stereos I've had in my cars. Then again, when you look at the demographic of who bought these cars...well, those genres of music probably weren't their first choice, lmao. My favorite thing to play through these speakers are Hans Zimmer movie scores...The Dark Knight soundtrack sounds unbelievable...like I'm listening to it in a theater. When I ride in other people's cars now I can't believe how shit the regular stuff is. You really are correct when saying the average person doesn't know what they're missing out on. I demo the Krell for everyone who I give rides to...here's your proof I wasn't overstating just how good these speakers are.

    One thing I think has happened also is that good sound has come WAY down in cost. For example, my dad built himself a very basic system in the early 90s, then he got something else and gave it to me. Viola! I spend $0 on new product! But seriously, its fairly easy to second hand something that used to be really expensive for not a whole lot. Heck, even new equipment can give you a lot for the money. Remember the Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers? For like $150 you got sound that was so good, it was not worth my money to spend more than that when I should be saving for the house I'll never own. I know this stuff isnt exactly hifi, but in a world where most young people like myself dont even have a set of speakers, having ANYTHING sort of feels like it.

    I've used another model of sony bluray player as a transport but I exchanged it with an old sony dvd player for the following reasons: - the most important for me: the bluray cannot play music gapless; even concert cd is played with a very short pause between songs - very annoying. Dvd player does not have this problem; - dvd player has a LED display and buttons. It also has a remote but it is not necessary for basic operations. Bluray needs to be connected to an external display and requires a remote; - somehow the old dvd player spins the disc quieter than the bluray does. I use the dvd player only as a cd transport. It costed me almost nothing.

    I THINK its okay to Invest on Hifi only if you had an Elephants , Bats and Whales Hearing Capabilities at the Same time you should have a 10 year old Cochlea and Auditory Nerve, Its easier to spend More if you cant hear the Cash Register Machine or you are just so blessed to Have so much Money to spent , In an Audiophile journey eyes sometimes Lies, Im very content and happy with my Set up, a pair of Stereo Vacuum tube Amp that pumps 10 watts to Power my 4 book Shelf speakers and a 1000 watts Stereo class D Amplifier to power my 15 inch and 12 inch woofer

    Hi. Here are some products that are frequently recommended on Reddit but barely reviewed on UA-cam. ArtDJ Pre II phono amp. American made, 65 bucks on Amazon JDS labs Atom 2 DAC and separate Headphone amp. $130 each. American made. They have a bundle price for the stack Waxwing DSP phono amp. Its predecessor was reviewed on UA-cam to a medium/high degree. However the waxwing is not as prolifically reviewed. It too is American made and sells for about $500 XDuoo TA-22 and TA-32 Chinese made tube/hybrid DAC/Headphone amp combo unit. TA-22 is ~$500 and TA-32 is $1000. Is the 32 worth double? One last thing of which I’m trying acquire GOOD COMPETENT information: using an iPhone/iPad/iPod touch as a streamer going digital out, from the iDevice, to a DAC. Why would I pay for a few hundred to a few thousand for a simple streamer when I can use a dedicated iDevice (which most own already) device and put that money into a nicer DAC? Thanks

      All good ideas, I’m not too concerned with the Chinese stuff, no shade, just way more interested in the American made stuff. I’ve fed my Geshelli j2s and ifi zen dac with my iPhone and it definitely worked great and ya I think more people should do it too before they spend big $ on a streamer that they may not need.
