  • I am heading out along the Jurassic Coast today, I am going to do some sieving for fossils. I am going to use my green potting sieves to find the iron pyrites Ammonites. They are preserved in what is also known as “ fools gold. “ Its the 4th January and a lot of people have been out on the Jurassic Coast fossil hunting with the tide permitting. Always follow the fossil collecting code of conduct along the Jurassic Coast, and be aware of the tide times. The cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning stay away from the dangerous cliffs. We do fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast in the Summer to show you how to look for fossils washed out onto the beach by the sea`s actions. The best tools are your eyes looking for fossils, but every now and then sieving can help you in the accumulations of iron pyrites on the beach.We are www.lymeregisfo...

    Well earned finds there!😍 It takes me ages to find anything but when I do🎉🎉 As for planting them..makes me laugh: it just takes a lot of effort at times. I would love a treasure hunt set up though one day and can imagine children loving that too!🌊🌞

      Thanks 🙏 it’s so much fun with the sieves we really enjoyed it yesterday. It does need working at and as you put in the effort more and more finds come to light as you well know .

    How do you prevent pyrite decay in your ammonites? I've heard that it's very difficult to stop them from disintegrating

    • @LymeRegisFossils
      @LymeRegisFossils  2 роки тому +3

      I bring home my iron pyrites Ammonites and soak them in a bucket of fresh water 💦 I keep changing the water over the days . Then I dry them out for weeks and varnish them to protect them from the air .

      @@LymeRegisFossils thanks for the reply. I think paraloid resin is quite popular for the pyrite ammonites but I've never tested it myself as Yorkshire ammonites fortunately tend to be a bit more resistant to pyrite decay.

      @@danc101 Pyryte decay is always a problem, and I think you canßt even stop ist. I lost many pyrite ammonites by decay, so thats the reason to come back and find new ones :-)
