I still do weight training with bands and was interested in creatine to help me retain muscle mass AND help the old brain. I do have a question that I don't believe you addressed. I'm 65, an avid cyclist, have done weight training for decades, and have been a vegetarian for about 8 years. I've been taking creatine monohydrate for about a month now, about 2-3 grams/day based on Dr. Greger's recommendation (see 'How Not To Age'). Two x 3/4 teaspoon dissolved in my tea every morning (dissolves instantly, with zero taste). I've noticed a big difference on my bike rides. In places where I used to get tired after a 50km ride I now feel fresh, and my recovery time is almost zero. Same thing in the gym. I've gained extra strength and recover almost instantly. Mentally I feel sharper too, and more alert. I'm not the type who likes taking any drugs of any kind, but after doing my research I decided to give this a try, and I'm very happy with the results so far, and I've experienced zero side effects.

I realize personal anecdotes aren't worth much from a scientific perspective, but here is one more.... I'm 59 and started taking 5 grams of creatine monohydrate daily a few weeks ago. After only a few days, I noticed a general increase in energy level and the ability to exercise more and to recover more quickly. I have not noticed any significant side effects. I did gain five pounds (from 155 to 160 pounds), but am not sure how much of that is from creatine or from a change in diet. My plan is to stay on it for a few months and then stop to see if there is any change. (Note: edited to correct the dosage, which was misstated in the original note.)
Have been taking creatine for about 3 months in combination with weight training 2-3 times a week. I'm a 56 year gastric cancer survivor who struggles to gain weight. I have put on about 2 kg since starting to take creatine and weights. I don't know how much is due to taking creatine, nor do I really care. I have not had any adverse side effects, so I intend to continue taking creatine for the foreseeable future.
I'm 65, and I've been weight training with my son for about 16 months. I've lost some weight and some bloodwork improvement in my last two checkups along with BP. My PCP recommends training and takes creatine himself and seemed to recommend I should consider it myself, so this is very helpful.
I’m 72 and my internist suggested that I take it. It caused really nasty diarrhea that was difficult to get over. After getting better, I tried t again at a very low dose with the same results. No more!
A long time ago folks were saying it helped with increasing strength for lifting heavy weights. I was skeptical but I tried it and for me, it absolutely worked. My strength increased by quite a bit and I had/have been working out/exercising for many years prior. It works, at least for me. Since then, I have focused more on endurance training, so I stopped taking it a long time ago, but now that I am getting up there in age, I am considering restarting.
Love creatine! I have been taking it for 3 yrs and it has helped me to keep my muscles looking full. I welcome the pump 😂 I am 54yo and weigh lift 3x a week. It is my experience mixing in a hot liquid (tea or coffee) dissolves best. No issues with hair loss here.
@@infiniteg7852 Myth. If you going bald anyway nothing will stop that. I've been taking it for 20 years and still have a think full head of hair. Get some of George Castanzas hair loss treatment.
@@infiniteg7852 have you experienced hair loss with this supplement? If so, have you experienced a reverse reaction (hair grow) once you stopped taking it? I respectfully asked because It has not happened to me, as I have a lot of thick and dense hair even after 3 years of taking it.
I was taking creatine several years back, until my doctor advised against it due to higher than normal levels of creatinine in my blood test results. I'm now considering restarting, as everything I've read says that this is not an indication of comprised kidney function, and you seem to agree with this assessment as well. I wish more doctors were more knowledgeable in this regard, as it seems he scared me for no reason. I'd also like to get my elderly mother to start taking it, to hopefully improve her waning memory and muscle loss. I'm concerned though about dehydration, as I know these days that she doesn't drink enough water as is, and feel taking this supplement will compound this issue. I'm not sure what to do here.
I take creatine monohydrate daily. It has helped with my strength training and especially recovery. I can do more reps with heavier weights, but not a huge improvement. My recovery is improved. Don't expect a huge gain in performance but more than if you didn't take it. It is difficult to show improved cognitive function. Research is ongoing with older people. I don't taste anything when drinking creatine monohydrate. It dissolved well enough in a glass of water. If you strength train I think you should try it.
I am 53 years old and take 5mg a day, usually with my black coffee in the morning. Absolutely helps my weight training and I honestly wonder if it helps my golf driving distance. Though the driving distance might be a result of my weight training.
I started taking it yesterday - for mental health and it worked - if brain has more energy it does it need to panic or stress when put under demand - no - feels like a antidepressant - is it working? I have only taken it for two days? - that first dose I felt it working and my body craved more of it afterwards - so I gave it another dose and it wanted even more - I gave it more - does it work? - well I can pull up a few studies - I don't think they are lying these peer reviewed studies saying it does - I felt different from that first dose not so much now as I have gotten used to it
I’m 58 years old diabetic type 2, heart condition due cholesterol I still am actively everyday I try work out muscle not gains? Why? I should use creatine? Please tell me thank you
I am 48 and I have been taking creatine since I was 16. I look fuller and more pumped than most my age and I often get told I look much younger. I have also been going to the gym since I was 13.
What if you already have slightly elevated ( above normal ) eGFR and creatinine levels - does taking creatine supplement contribute to higher levels of those two tests? Thanks for all the videos/knowledge you share with us!
I'm only one data point, but I'll share my story. A few weeks into creatine supplementation, I coincidently had some blood analysis done. When the results came back, my cardio doc was alarmed by my creatinine level. He advised me to lay off supplementation for a week and get another blood analysis. After stopping for a week and getting another blood analysis, my creatinine level reverted to my typical number.
I absolutely love this guys (sorry, I meant "Doctors"). I think I watched every single one of their videos. Super informative, they make them short without leaving out information and in a fun way. They make a great pair ! Thank you !!
You did leave one thing out, but if you have a creatinine level at 1.65 your 511 and 48-year-old male. I’ve had this for the last 15 years and the kidney doctors say we have to keep an eye out on it. great information and fun to listen to
I’m a health junky, but if I’m being honest most supplements provide expensive urine. The exception are Creatine and Citrulline Malate. I’m absolutely convinced the combination makes me stronger, and I feel, look, and perform ten years younger.
I ‘m a 68 year old male and have been taking creatine monohydrate for almost 6 months, I didn’t load just take 3G per day in the form of 4 capsules (2 morning and 2 evening). My questions are, does taking capsules as opposed to powder diluted have a negative effect, and should I increase the dose to 5g as you and some others suggest. I do exercise almost daily using resistance training, I am awaiting knee replacement surgery which should be imminent and hopefully I’ll be able to get back to cycling as well. I look forward to hearing from you
Excellent videos by a great double act. Thanks gents 👏👏 Re Creatine - it’s awesome. I’ve been taking it for 14 years and nowadays more for the brain than the gym. Once again, appreciate the videos, keep them coming please 👍

I’m - 47 year old male, was in okay shape and started lifting weights again. Was pretty discouraged in the beginning as my workouts were pretty poor. Started taking creatine and wow, what a difference. I can really hit the weights hard now which makes me want to go to the gym more. I love the stuff!
hi, i’m 64 just had hip replacement surgery. my husband & i started creatine. i do notice swelling in my legs probably just from surgery. any thoughts?
My buddy and I were competing in triathlons in the 90's and read about Creatine to enhance performance. Weight gain was a concern but we were game to see what the net gains would be. We creatine loaded and experienced a 5 pound weight gain in one week but didn't see any appreciative gain in performance. In a sport where we were sharing grams to lighten the load. Granted there's a difference between static and dynamic weight gains we just couldn't see any difference in performance and it just didn't make sense to spend $11 for a titanium nut to shave a few grams let alone hauling 5 more pounds on the bike. LOL. Gotta try it though.
I'm 47 and have taken creatine for about 3-4 years because I train pretty hard at the gym. As well as the better muscle endurance, I actually noticed that my memory improved.
I am 73 and work out every day with something. Mountain bike, rowing machine, swimming, resistance bands, etc. My question and forgive me if you answered it. After the 3 weeks of 5 grams daily, do I keep taking it every day or is it better to stay off it awhile and then go back given my age or????? Thanks
That’s a good question, I would think that it would be more of an intercellular increase, and thereby not in the vascular system. If anyone has better information than me, please feel free to chime in.
Best thing since sliced bread. I was in the Health & Fitness business from 1987-1999 and creatine became popular in that time frame. I have taken it somewhat consistently since that time. Personally, I always gain a few reps and a few pounds within a week. Highly recommend.
What were you saying about creatine being used outside of mitochondria? I thought that all ATP production happened inside mitochondria. Do you have a reference for this factoid?
Great information, thanks. I am in my 60's and have been taking the same brand of creatine for over 7 years. Recently this same brand, at 5mg with or without food, has caused me to have stomach upset, just stomach pain, no other issues but I am now unable to take due to an upset stomach. I do not have GERD or any other stomach issues. Any thoughts? Thank you.
Thanks for the video My 15 year old son is going to need a kidney transplant some or later, I could be the donator, I stop taking creatinine as soon I was told about my son transplant, any extra information about creatinine affecting the kidneys?
So there is no evidence that it causes kidney failure. Totally understand why you would stop. You come ask his nephrologist. Best of luck to you and your son.
Thanks for your science talk and then the complimentary dinner table style conversation. I wonder where a guy in the US would get the good stuff? What about just stirring it into my morning coffee?
After all the hoopla about creatine of late, I tried a cycle. Mind you, I'm 63 and have been lifting, jogging, martial arts my whole life, w/an emphasis on lifting. I still lift 6 days a week, often 'heavy.' So I tried a cycle of creatine to see how it would impact me and all it did was make me gain weight, like 5 lbs in a week. No greater strength, recovery, endurance, etc. No increased or sharper brain function either. Caveat emptor.
...a couple of questions....can you mix creatine with an amino energy supplement safely...???...and will taking creatine have any adverse effect on the prostate...???
I’m trying to get excellent blood flow, and greatly increase oxygen intake to the cells, should I take Citrulline Malate, Creatine, or both to get maximum results?
Very usefull and informative; my teenager son takes it so this came at the perfect time to me; gracias. Hearing you Brad, I may start adding it to my eavery morning green smoothy...
Love watching you guys! I've taken creatine off and on over the past 20+ years, as fitness and weight-training have been mainstays of my own health routine for as long as I can remember. Now...I'm considering the potential benefits of supplementing with creatine, as I'm 12-days post-op from a total hip replacement, as of today. And though I can tell the pain in my actual joint is gone (I can literally balance on that extremity with the aid of a walker, with no pain in the actual hip joint), I can also tell how weak the surrounding muscles are, not only in the region of the surgery, but also to the hips, thigh and gluteus muscles of the opposite leg. In retrospect, this shouldn't be surprising to me, as I know my ability to keep these muscles toned and in shape, have been hampered due to the osteoarthritis of the involved hip. So, I'm hoping creatine can help as I rehab both legs and get stronger over the months ahead. Great video, as always. Thanks!
Competitive cyclist, and gym guy. I take creatine. One thing I've noticed is that it reduces any brain fog after having a couple of apres pints the next day. I'm also curious since I'm at that time of life if it would help my wife with some of the effects of menopause, ie migraines, etc. I'd love to hear your comments on that.
Another great video Docs! Is creatine just used by people who work out? Is it something that could benefit anyone whether they power lift or not? I don't run marathons or lift weights but I could use a boost of energy just the same. I understood that this is better than taking steroids but is it suggested for regular people who don't do anything strenuous? Just wondering if it's a good supplement for everyone. Thanks for sharing another great video!👍
I'm 58yr old, I tried creatine monohydrate for a only a month and I start to have issues with my kidney, Just wondering if creatine monohydrate is recommended for people of my age or do you guys recommend one do a kidney test before using this product? because this product is not good for one with kidney issues. I have test to show to prove it.
I like that you revisited this, I think it’s an important subject and really appreciate it. I have a question however, my wife started taking it as I looked into it and as a severe epileptic, found out it could help. The problem is that she said she couldn’t sleep at night, but she was taking it in the morning. Could this be true? She stopped taking it just in case anyway, and yes she could sleep. But there is no info to support this anywhere.
Today i decided to let creatine go😢. Im suffering from bppv symptoms from it. Im constantly on and off trying to figure out if creatine was really the culprit and sad to say yes. Ive been taking it straight 1 year and it was fine. Until recently. So i stopped it for a couple of months and bppv symtoms went away. Then trying my luck again because i really want the strength and the fullness of my muscle. After 6 days of taking it bppv symptoms starts again😢. Its just so unfortunate to lose the good benefit of creatine.
Hello. I started creatine and I had no heath issues. I went for a blood test and my efgr was 57 or 56. I was advised to stop creatine to get another blood test in about two weeks. My creatinine levels were high also. Is this because I wasn’t drinking enough water because I would like to start creatine again if my next scheduled blood test comes back normal

I did gain five pounds (from 155 to 160 pounds), but am not sure how much of that is from creatine or from a change in diet. My plan is to stay on it for a few months and then stop to see if there is any change. (Note: edited to correct the dosage, which was misstated in the original note.)
This is not an uncommon experience. Best of luck.
Hi Docs! 741K.. still cheerleading for you to 1 million!
Well done, thanks for the no B/S data, reviews and recommendations.
I'm 71 and a plant based eater, lift weights for bone density. Great video. I would like to hear your thoughts on plant-based eating and bone density.
There is amino acids you need you can only get from red meat silly
I recommend you avoid PCP.
What can I take for more energy in the gym?
I’m 72 and my internist suggested that I take it. It caused really nasty diarrhea that was difficult to get over. After getting better, I tried t again at a very low dose with the same results. No more!
Yes it can cause that. Hopefully you were only taking a teaspoon a day.
@@TheSuperdodgy yes I was and when I tried it the second time, only a quarter of a teaspoon.
Did you take creatine monohydrate? This version is supposed to have less GI effects. Or, I have heard that Creapur(e) is “cleaner”
@@denisedube-stevenson3808 yes I did. I used a product from Thorne which is very clean. I think I’m just super sensative
Perhaps taking a daily probiotic or Activia yogurt will firm things up for you in your intestines.
Good call! Thanks for sharing
When do you take it? With meals or empty stomach? In the morning before a workout?Afterwards?
So most studies don’t show significant differences with time of day
Love creatine! I have been taking it for 3 yrs and it has helped me to keep my muscles looking full. I welcome the pump 😂 I am 54yo and weigh lift 3x a week. It is my experience mixing in a hot liquid (tea or coffee) dissolves best. No issues with hair loss here.
Nice one. The hair loss thing is an old myth.
@@TheSuperdodgyno it’s not.. it speeds up hair loss
- well I can pull up a few studies - I don't think they are lying these peer reviewed studies saying it does - I felt different from that first dose not so much now as I have gotten used to it
My sister ordered a pound of it today
@@BobMacNeal That’s what I suspect. The supplement maybe good, but might also interfere with your blood work. Thanks for sharing your story.
I absolutely love this guys (sorry, I meant "Doctors"). I think I watched every single one of their videos. Super informative, they make them short without leaving out information and in a fun way. They make a great pair ! Thank you !!
Thanks!!
You did leave one thing out, but if you have a creatinine level at 1.65 your 511 and 48-year-old male. I’ve had this for the last 15 years and the kidney doctors say we have to keep an eye out on it. great information and fun to listen to
You guys are great… i don’t miss a video. Though I can’t always listen right away, they are always on my list to view. Thanks guys
I’m a health junky, but if I’m being honest most supplements provide expensive urine. The exception are Creatine and Citrulline Malate. I’m absolutely convinced the combination makes me stronger, and I feel, look, and perform ten years younger.
We would ageee about the creatine and some supplements leading to expensive urine. Not sure about the citrulline
I look forward to hearing from you
Is it safe to take if you have hypertension?
Creatine is amazing!
Excellent videos by a great double act. Thanks gents 👏👏
Re Creatine - it’s awesome. I’ve been taking it for 14 years and nowadays more for the brain than the gym.
Once again, appreciate the videos, keep them coming please 👍
Great to hear! Thanks Andy
I am in my mid 50s and I take 5 grams every day with a whey protein shake. It's easy, cheap and I think it helps. Seems like everyone on the planet should take it.
I’m - 47 year old male, was in okay shape and started lifting weights again. Was pretty discouraged in the beginning as my workouts were pretty poor. Started taking creatine and wow, what a difference. I can really hit the weights hard now which makes me want to go to the gym more. I love the stuff!
That’s awesome!😎
hi, i’m 64 just had hip replacement surgery. my husband & i started creatine. i do notice swelling in my legs probably just from surgery. any thoughts?
How does creatine affect BP
Good explanation 😊
Thank you 🙂
My buddy and I were competing in triathlons in the 90's and read about Creatine to enhance performance.
Been taking it since mid 90's. Everyone should be taking it.
Do you have to take more water if you take creatine everyday?
Yes you do.
Thanx Docs, you guys are great. God bless u guys.
Thanks
In the video, they said there was no need to cycle (take a break) creatine.
@@jordanthecat I was just curious if age makes a difference. Thanks for the update
Since it causes water retention, does it raise blood pressure?
That’s a good question, I would think that it would be more of an intercellular increase, and thereby not in the vascular system. If anyone has better information than me, please feel free to chime in.
@@gtek1357I’ve been taking it for 11 months, and I’m also on a BP medication. The creatine has not caused any elevation of my BP.
@@Combat556 Me too combat. No effect on BP whatsoever.
Thanks for the info! How does Creatine affect how the body utilizes glycogen vs fat stores for energy? If at all?
Any difference between talking gummy creatine vs powder?
Not sure but no reason to think so
Best thing since sliced bread.
Can you add it to a smoothie?
Yes. I take it with my protein powder in a shake.
Thank you.
Thanks for the video
My 15 year old son is going to need a kidney transplant some or later, I could be the donator, I stop taking creatinine as soon I was told about my son transplant, any extra information about creatinine affecting the kidneys?
So there is no evidence that it causes kidney failure. Totally understand why you would stop. You come ask his nephrologist. Best of luck to you and your son.
Great information, guys👍
Very interesting! Can you do a segment on L-Citrulline? Can using an excess of it cause arrhythmia? In particular, afib?
Hello Doc Guys, is Creatine related to Creatinine? I am a RA patient and am tested regularly for Creatinine. Would like to know. Thanks.
Thanks for your science talk and then the complimentary dinner table style conversation.
I wonder where a guy in the US would get the good stuff? What about just stirring it into my morning coffee?
What do you suggest when kidney function tests show numbers start to creep out of range (on the high end) when taking creatine?
Is creatine safe for breastfeeding mom and baby 5 months old
After all the hoopla about creatine of late, I tried a cycle.
You don't "cycle" creatine. It's not steroids. You can take it forever.
One week is hardly any kind of trial.
...a couple of questions....can you mix creatine with an amino energy supplement safely...???...and will taking creatine have any adverse effect on the prostate...???
I bicycle and lift and have had always sore legs. Now I tried with creatine. Though some gas so I’m going to try Creatine HCL.
do a video on D-ribose and collagen combinations for over 65 and effects of diabetes
Is creatine safe for PD patients? Workout at least 5 days week.
60 been taking creatine with whey protein with a workout room in my home my body is getting amazing. Beach body 😊love it
SO smart in the new black/dark blue scrubs! The best yet.
Is it contraindicated in people with high blood pressure due to its water retaining properties?
I’m an endurance athlete that takes or more accurately cycles creatine to great effect. I find that cycling usage on and off is has the best results..
Thanks!
When you do hip replacement do some patients lose a lot of blood?
Competitive cyclist, and gym guy. I take creatine. One thing I've noticed is that it reduces any brain fog after having a couple of apres pints the next day. I'm also curious since I'm at that time of life if it would help my wife with some of the effects of menopause, ie migraines, etc. I'd love to hear your comments on that.
So no specific evidence for migraines but honestly almost everyone can benefit. There would be more evidence for HRT to help the fog
Hi Dr Brad, what do you mix your creatine in? thanks.
Thank you!

Excellent info. You have a new subscriber. I am 65 years old and swear by it.
