Saying this softly so my RT/10 doesn't hear... but if I was ~5-10 years older I would have had a 2017 ACR on order as soon as I found out the Viper was ending the production run. We will never see such an absurd car produced for the "masses" again.
With respect, not the best “arising out of price” comparison. Dealers all over are selling the 992 GT3 for $300-350k USD. Even Porsches official finder website has them all listed for that price range. Meanwhile the Viper sells for $200k now but started for $93k. So either it’s a comparison of MSRPs, or current market selling price, but in either event it’s lopsided.
I'd still rather have a C8 than either of these cars--especially with the predicted trims coming out. :-) I'd rather have a $100k car that beats up on the 200k cars because that's a better story (and the C8 is just so damn good). These are both awesome though!
It's amazing how it literally had/has the most track records(13) of any street legal car. I'd need to check if it still does hence why I put has/had, likely has lost a few though. Amazing car.

Comparing it with the current GT3 (992), it is 6 seconds slower on the Nordschleife, 3 seconds slower on the Sachsenring and roughly the same at Dunnville and Virginia Raceway, despite 140 hp more, wider and grippier tires and way more downforce.

What surprises a lot of people about the Viper is, underneath all the rawness and power, they are actually very competent GTs. I am lucky enough to own an 06 Viper coupe, and I road trip it 1600 miles round trip every year to visit family. The seats are relatively comfy (very dependent on your build) and the gearing is so tall that it runs 90-100 mph at under 2k RPM, meaning I can average close to 26 MPG on the highway. Love mine and don't see myself ever getting rid of it. That said, I have a lot of respect for 911s, and would absolutely add one to the stable if finances allowed.
@@Link30567 That came out a bit wrong, no, I manage about 26 mpg highway if I am 'behaving'. 75ish puts me at about 1200 RPM in 6th, so it really is almost idling at highway speeds

The Viper is and always will be my dream car. Once this wild aftermarket pricing comes back down, I seriously want to snag one. I don't care if I can only drive it 4 months of the year, living in Cleveland... I've wanted one since I was 5. I will own one before I die.
I’ve been in 3-5 gens on track, they are all similar experiences. I wouldn’t get to fixed on generation unless you are concerned with track times and such. Funny, was just in a gen4 on a track just outside cleveland yesterday!

Great minds! The 2000 Viper GTS-R Concept ignited my love of cars, and the Viper has been my absolute favorite car ever since. From the exterior, the 5th Gen Viper is the most beautiful car ever made, IMO.
My 27 year old son has a red 2013 Viper GTS and it’s stunnng in person! He gets stares and pictures taken everywhere he goes and people try to race him!
As a person who dreamed of owning one and now I have one since 2015 all I can say ... ITS Worth it , not for everyone but I love it and wouldn't sell it for anything (id love to have a gt3 so bad but not sell my viper to get one )and Its really hard to find tires for it , infact I'm struggling right now to find tires for it
The Viper seems like it would be the more fun and cooler weekend car. The Porsche seems like a better daily driver, though still compromised. I'd pick the Viper and buy a better daily driver on the side. New for new, the price difference would afford a very nice second car.
For most UA-cam channels, we all skip intros to get to the main part. For throttle house ,it feels like a crime 😅. The intros are always lit. This might just be the best car review channel ever💯

Ever since the 90s it's always been Corvette vs Viper in terms of American "super" cars. Look at all the past car and driver and Motortrend magazine covers. I have always loved the Viper but the C7 Corvette was gorgeous and now the C8 is just a beast. It'd be fun nonetheless
The top end power should be way more punchy since it makes over 100HP more but I'm also curious to see the similarities with driving impressions and the lower to midrange power aswell.
the truly impressive thing about this Viper and especially the ACR is that it's one of the best sports cars while being almost a decade old. The ACR the used was newer of course but it still beat the track time of the 2022 Porsche so imagine where'd the Viper would be if they didn't cancel it
Imo, viper certainly have the speed, and they certainly have the presence. It’s not just a different looking C6 when driving down the road. You know it’s special, and gives you feelings similer to a supercar. So for that, it’s a supercar.
@@Shinglesdoctor before the 5th gen viper it was sorta a proper mid 2000s American supercar if you catch my drift like a Saleen s7, has the performance the looks but was kinda rough around the edges especially the interior, 2014+ are ALOT better put together, magnetic ride, and for 2014 that was a properly nice interior, 5th gen definitely a supercar, 4th gen and lower was arguably a sports car with supercar power and almost hyper car torque at the time
Yeah, literally the only thing Id change is blacking out or greying out (black might be a bit to edgy) the chrome window trim so it matches the paint/wheels better... But even that is such a tiny as gripe, and that interior... God I think I'm gonna have a crisis!
Having currently a 992 Turbo S and a 17 Viper GTSR, both are amazing experiences in their own purpose driven manner. The Viper 100% gets people stopping and taking videos and pics while the Porsche...... well just looks like a Porsche. Being my 992 Turbo S is Dolomite Silver with the Aero pack and Exclusive Manufacturer leather with the 2 tone Graphite blue/ Chalk interior it's the perfect spec in my eyes even though it was so expensive. Yet the blue/ ivory interior option on My M8 Gran Coupe is just as nice and in some ways nicer and was only a $5k option.
James, must you trot out all that outdated trash about the early Viper? I'll have you know a bone-stock Gen 5 ACR on factory tires ran a 7:01 on the Nordschleife! (With even more in it, but the stint was cut short due to weather) What does that particular model of Porsche do?
With Vipers, you have to get the exact one that was on your wall when you were 9. This one just doesn't do it for me. It has to be a Gen 2 GTS and it has to be blue with white stripes. A Gen 1 convertible, red with a tan rag is also cool, but it wouldn't satisfy the itch.
Was at a recent car show, there were about 10-12 Porsches of all models and one Viper. Guess which car had all the people standing around it?? The Gt3 is an awesome car and i can appreciate all the 911 variants but no car I have driven stirs your emotions like the Viper. Still the fasest car I have taken around a track.
Why on earth you would chose the Viper. It has horrible traction its not a track car, can't put the power down, the cabin gets super heated during full throttle, has horrible braking.
Love the touring! But honestly I don't like the Turbo S constantly being compared to other 911's. It's just got a completely different characteristic and it's fun in its own way.
So, the Viper is a "Super Car" for 4 reasons. 1. Big Horsepower with the ability to do "Super Car" things on the street and track. 2. Looks (there's no other car that looks like a Viper) 3. Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVO law)

The Porsche is nice , sure... ... but Viper all day, everyday. Without a doubt,, is what I'd have. HP/liter is not everything. Not one bit. While that Porsche is highly strung on the limit of what it's N/A engine can do, the Viper is putting out its HP without breaking a sweat, making it reliable. And then, with some bolts on it really opens it up. Or if you really want to shit your pants, some forced induction, and you'll be in 4 figure power numbers in no time. :)
The engine and gearbox in the Porsche are top 5 globally, easily, however, being a Porsche, has drawbacks that make me want a Viper a lot more: the car is basic when you configure it, almost everything is an optional extra and they are bloody expensive, looks are underwhelming and conservative, reliability is questionable, maintenance is a nightmare and I don't wish it for anyone, it has an automatic as an option and 80% will go for it because they can't shift and they use the excuse that the PDK is faster. The Viper on the other hand, has no auto option, looks like science fiction, gearbox is very strong and can handle a lot more power, the engine is very sturdy, maintenance is a bit more manageable, it increases in value all the time, has the wow and the cool factor and it's harder to drive, more engaging, more difficult, it makes you feel more and that's what it's about. Rather than paying 23k to Porsche and making them rich for some leather and stiching(meh), I would rather buy the stroker kit to 9 litres for the Viper, more aggresive camshaft, intake, exhaust, coilovers, rims. The 9 litres Viper engine has 750 wheel hp, it can hold it's own against the McLaren 720S to certain speeds. Now that's money well spent, doing something to the car that actually improves it, rather that spending it on excessively expensive optionals for design and trivial stuff. The Viper is simply more of a car for the money.
Viper in world of driving excitement is what grilled steak is in world of culinary gastronomy...the golden bottom of pure goodness...the edges are a bit burned...it's raw in the middle...it's greasy...slightly oversolted...fresly grained peper is nearly too spicy....but all together...boy ohhh boy...have U ever need more for propper joy?
Although that is a legitimate ultimate sports car genuine "Porsche" .....I also would take the Viper. most people would get in and ride with you in a Porsche , most people would be afraid to get in and ride with you in a Viper. That is respect, in a counter-intuitive way.

In another 20 years when todays supercars are slower than an electric Miata the definition of a petrol “supercar” will be blurred. 20 year olds who are babies that will say “the Viper is a supercar” especially if Dodge makes another one that truly is. In high-school we had a trade portion that was focused on automotive repair, body repair, welding etc. They somehow had been donated a white with red strips dodge viper they kept on display that I got to walk past everyday, gorgeous car.
If I was choosing one car to be a jack of all trades, it'd be the Porsche. If I had a primary/daily car already, the Dodge is a no brainer. The viper will go down as a very special car in history, probably the last 'mass' produced v10 manuals ever. The problem with Porsche is that they are so good and there are so many similar looking models that they get a little boring after a few months of a new one coming out. Owning a car like the Viper that wants you dead every time you put your foot down would bring a smile to my face.
I’ll never get sick of driving my Vipers. The big stupid smile I get on my face from the moment I fire up that bellowing V10 stays on my face for hours after the drive is done. It might be a raging beast of a car, but boy is it something truly special & exciting to drive!!! PS: The GT3 Touring is pretty darned incredible too!!! 🏎💨

You are correct, in my mind, choosing that viper over the GT3 is just crazy! Sure it has the engine and the drama, but it's a dodge🤢 and that interior🤢🤢 and build quality🤢🤢 it's like comparing a tesla to a porsche taycan, on paper they might be similar, but irl it's 2 quite different machines.

I have always felt that the Mercedes AMG GT was supposed to be the cleaned up or “classy” version of the Viper. And it is amazing but it lost the brash, unapologetic fervor the Viper has in abundance. Great review and as always made me laugh out loud multiple times.

Ever since the 90s it's always been Corvette vs Viper in terms of American "super" cars. Look at all the past car and driver and Motortrend magazine covers. I have always loved the Viper but the C7 Corvette was gorgeous and now the C8 is just a beast. It'd be fun nonetheless

the truly impressive thing about this Viper and especially the ACR is that it's one of the best sports cars while being almost a decade old. The ACR the used was newer of course but it still beat the track time of the 2022 Porsche so imagine where'd the Viper would be if they didn't cancel it

Imo, viper certainly have the speed, and they certainly have the presence. It’s not just a different looking C6 when driving down the road. You know it’s special, and gives you feelings similer to a supercar. So for that, it’s a supercar.
Even with the C6 you needed a ZO6 to keep up with the base Viper. It is absolutely a supercar.
@@Shinglesdoctor before the 5th gen viper it was sorta a proper mid 2000s American supercar if you catch my drift like a Saleen s7, has the performance the looks but was kinda rough around the edges especially the interior, 2014+ are ALOT better put together, magnetic ride, and for 2014 that was a properly nice interior, 5th gen definitely a supercar, 4th gen and lower was arguably a sports car with supercar power and almost hyper car torque at the time

Having currently a 992 Turbo S and a 17 Viper GTSR, both are amazing experiences in their own purpose driven manner.
The Viper 100% gets people stopping and taking videos and pics while the Porsche...... well just looks like a Porsche.
Being my 992 Turbo S is Dolomite Silver with the Aero pack and Exclusive Manufacturer leather with the 2 tone Graphite blue/ Chalk interior it's the perfect spec in my eyes even though it was so expensive. Yet the blue/ ivory interior option on My M8 Gran Coupe is just as nice and in some ways nicer and was only a $5k option.
as a European Dodge Viper is the way to go to Me anyways. You can see Porsches everywhere but Vipers? that's once a lifetime opportunity

With Vipers, you have to get the exact one that was on your wall when you were 9. This one just doesn't do it for me. It has to be a Gen 2 GTS and it has to be blue with white stripes. A Gen 1 convertible, red with a tan rag is also cool, but it wouldn't satisfy the itch.

Turbo S is for topspeed and fastest 0-100 and for the autobahn, gt3 is for handling and NA engine

... but Viper all day, everyday. Without a doubt,, is what I'd have.
HP/liter is not everything. Not one bit. While that Porsche is highly strung on the limit of what it's N/A engine can do, the Viper is putting out its HP without breaking a sweat, making it reliable.
And then, with some bolts on it really opens it up. Or if you really want to shit your pants, some forced induction, and you'll be in 4 figure power numbers in no time. :)

The engine and gearbox in the Porsche are top 5 globally, easily, however, being a Porsche, has drawbacks that make me want a Viper a lot more: the car is basic when you configure it, almost everything is an optional extra and they are bloody expensive, looks are underwhelming and conservative, reliability is questionable, maintenance is a nightmare and I don't wish it for anyone, it has an automatic as an option and 80% will go for it because they can't shift and they use the excuse that the PDK is faster. The Viper on the other hand, has no auto option, looks like science fiction, gearbox is very strong and can handle a lot more power, the engine is very sturdy, maintenance is a bit more manageable, it increases in value all the time, has the wow and the cool factor and it's harder to drive, more engaging, more difficult, it makes you feel more and that's what it's about. Rather than paying 23k to Porsche and making them rich for some leather and stiching(meh), I would rather buy the stroker kit to 9 litres for the Viper, more aggresive camshaft, intake, exhaust, coilovers, rims. The 9 litres Viper engine has 750 wheel hp, it can hold it's own against the McLaren 720S to certain speeds. Now that's money well spent, doing something to the car that actually improves it, rather that spending it on excessively expensive optionals for design and trivial stuff. The Viper is simply more of a car for the money.

In high-school we had a trade portion that was focused on automotive repair, body repair, welding etc. They somehow had been donated a white with red strips dodge viper they kept on display that I got to walk past everyday, gorgeous car.

If I was choosing one car to be a jack of all trades, it'd be the Porsche. If I had a primary/daily car already, the Dodge is a no brainer. The viper will go down as a very special car in history, probably the last 'mass' produced v10 manuals ever. The problem with Porsche is that they are so good and there are so many similar looking models that they get a little boring after a few months of a new one coming out. Owning a car like the Viper that wants you dead every time you put your foot down would bring a smile to my face.
I’ll never get sick of driving my Vipers. The big stupid smile I get on my face from the moment I fire up that bellowing V10 stays on my face for hours after the drive is done. It might be a raging beast of a car, but boy is it something truly special & exciting to drive!!!
PS: The GT3 Touring is pretty darned incredible too!!! 🏎💨

I seriously don’t understand the Porsche love from guys. They are so boring. The Viper is the epitome of excitement in looks and performance.
That’s an exceptionally good pair of cars to compare. I bet not a lot of potential GT3 customers would even consider looking at a Viper, but truth be told, they both deliver The ultimate drivers experience😎
You are correct, in my mind, choosing that viper over the GT3 is just crazy! Sure it has the engine and the drama, but it's a dodge🤢 and that interior🤢🤢 and build quality🤢🤢 it's like comparing a tesla to a porsche taycan, on paper they might be similar, but irl it's 2 quite different machines.

Everytime all the time I will go for viper. You can buy whenever you want that Porsche but not the Viper for that Price. That thing's price will rocket even more...
I have always felt that the Mercedes AMG GT was supposed to be the cleaned up or “classy” version of the Viper. And it is amazing but it lost the brash, unapologetic fervor the Viper has in abundance. Great review and as always made me laugh out loud multiple times.
It actually is. The core design was from the days the parent company Diamler owned Dodge. Looks up SLS AMG and Viper.

The viper GTS fifth gen is my favorite car, quite amazing it showing up on a throttle house vid.
The Dodge Viper is *technically* a mid-engine car, as the engine is behind the front axle.
The Porsche is pretty clearly the "better" car. And I'll take that Viper any day if both were offered at the same price.
