  • In this video, I demonstrate how the Sage Ashi Dachi (crane stance) with the "cup and saucer" position of the hands can be used as a shoulder lock in newaza (ground fighting). The legs in the crane stance is an obvious figure-4 which is used to entangle the arm in kesa gatame. The "cup & saucer" position of the hands lifts the head which in turn puts more pressure on the shoulder.

It's an interesting interpretation - _if_ you simply isolate the kata down to the movements you've demonstrated. My issue with is what came before and what came after the motions you demonstrated. When you take them into consideration, the context of that part of the technique changes.
IMO, it's not a ground technique as it is a leg catch/hold, then sweep. A great example is from this vid - the first half demonstrates that part of the kata - starting with the 'double block' in cross stance (leg grab - can also be a kick catch), to manji uke in crane (standing up while controlling the opponent's leg) -> migi koshi kamai (reaching behind and across the opponent to keep them close), into the side kick and punch (the sweeping of the opponent's standing leg and pulling the opponent towards the ground).

Good points. I've been playing with a very similar application.

I understand what you're trying to demonstrate here but although the forms are similar, they aren't the same.

Can you explain? The hands come to the hip. Legs are in a figure 4. Looks the same to me.
