  • This is a great bunkai sequence from Tekki/Nihanchi Shodan. Part of it is borrowed from Iain Abernethy ‪@practicalkatabunkai‬
Use the opening salutation to crash & clinch when confronted with a barrage of wild punches. Once you control the enemy with a Thai clinch, use the "crossover step" to destroy the leg with an oblique kick. This should collapse the enemy's posture. Now use the knee raise from the kata as a knee strike. Follow up with elbows and if they are blocked, strip the guard using the gedan berai, use the uchi uke to clear a path tp the head and start over again.

Love this bunkai and that's a great pad drill to add some power and build up that muscle memory. Thank you for another great video.

I never learned or watched that upward movement in the beginning of the kata, juste join downward the hands. That's said, I like your interpretation and drill of tekki, thanks for sharing !

That upward motion is not found in the Shotokan version but its in the older versions (Naihanchi). For some reason, it was removed for the Shotokan. I have decided to bring it back for myself and my students. I no longer belong to a Shotokan organization so I have the autonomy to do so. 😊

very interesting ! but I don't find that move in Shorin Ryu, or in Motobu's book or in Motobu Riu. After your answer I made a quick search on youtube and I found this motion in some people in Shito Riu, and Wado Riu. Are there other Riu who makes that move ? Thanks for your answer and sharing your experience !

Excellent video, thank you so much for that. Besides the fact that it effortlessly fits to all the rules/principles/guidelines that evolved in the practical karate community over the years, it's also simply a good video: Quick pace, clear explanations, useful camera angles - just great. We do not have Tekki/Nai(h/f)anchi in our curriculum, but I always found it most intruiging and with these explanations, that feeling got even more intense. If you ever have the time and interest to look at some Goju-ryu kata, I'll be glued to the monitor even more. :D
    Best wishes from Germany!

Andy, are you part of any formal organization that does belt testing for practical karate or do you conduct belt testings yourself?
I reached Shodan in the US South Atlantic branch of JKA Shotokan about 10 years ago, was training to test for Nidan but never did and ended up leaving due to career and other reasons and took a long hiatus from karate.
In the last couple years I’ve started training again on my own again with a focus on practical karate, inspired by Iain too as well as Patrick McCarthy and your videos, and would like to eventually start teaching others because there’s nobody doing this type of Karate in my area.
However, I feel like teaching with only Shodan rank may be viewed as under qualified. But maybe that’s just the residual from the very strict “OSU!!!” mentality I was conditioned to have in JKA Shotokan.

I'm with the World Combat Association. With the WCA, you write your own curriculum but you need to cover certain areas to have it approved by the WCA. Iain Abernethy is the "head coach" of the WCA.
If you are interested in teaching, would recommend you study a grappling art to compliment your karate; judo, BJJ, wrestling etc.
