  • All karate-ka (in fact, all strikers) should know how to get back to their feet after getting pushed down or knocked down. In this video, I borrow BJJ's technical stand-up. I teach this to my beginner students.
The distance between you and your enemy will dictate whether this is the right way to return to your feet. In the video, I do a complete breakdown of the movements as well and outline two common mistakes I see my beginner karate students make.

    - There's legions of combat sports enthusiasts, convinced that "only their stuff works", and by "works" they mean: in EVERY context; consensual, non-consensual, on the street, on the moon... All the rest is BS
-There's legions of traditional martial arts and/or military methods fun-boys, defending their ultra-deadly martial art against any sort of criticism, reasonable or not.
    - And then, there is this great master, approaching his martial art with pragmatism and modesty, saying: "OK, let's borrow this method from another combat sport" cause it has relevance for the methods he is teaching and the context for which said methods apply.
This the quintessence of what every dojo / gym / training context should do: building bridges, find similarities, appreciate differences, cooperate and borrow from each other.
Absolute love. I regret living in a different continent than this gym

That has to be one of the most meaningful compliments I have ever received. Thank you so much!

I have seen some form of a stand-in base or technical stand-up in traditional martial arts, including karate and gung fu.
It was more widely taught in self defenses from the 1990s and before.
I also believe that some salutes, done at the beginning of forms and katas is a frame or some type of cover crash, similar to the Spear System.
