You are so lucky to have such a great Dad. I'm 77. As the youngest son of seven, my Dad would tease my brothers telling them he loved me the most. As a kid and teenager he was always there for me, never missed my events, at every baseball/basketball game cheering me on. When I was 20 I told my Dad I was gay. I didn't want to go through life hiding it from him. He walked away and never spoke to me again. I ran into a childhood neighbor in 1969 who told me he passed away in 1965.. He never answered my birthday or Christmas cards sent year after year. Same with my 6 brothers, all of whom have passed away now, but I never once received a birthday, Christmas card, or phone call from any of them. They never acknowledged or met their nephews (my husband and I had (fraternal) twin sons via surrogacy in 1990.) My boys never met their grandfather. Today my boys are 37 and have given me 4 wonderful grandsons. Hug your Dad. Tell him every day how much you love him.

I can't imagine the sense of sadness and betrayal you must have felt when those you love most, didn't accept you for who you are. But you really could have done nothing. It certainly wouldn't have been worth concealing yourself & lying your entire life. And if they could only accept you if you adhered to their conceptualization of a 'perfect' son or brother, based on the ignorant beliefs they inherited, they failed themselves. Because they allowed that to get in the way of a strong relationship. One fueled by unconditional love. You can only control how you react to others, and you simply chose to keep your integrity. If anything, I find that couragious.

It’s a bittersweet story because ,in the end, you did find your happiness, but it sucks that your family never seemed to realize and/or want that happiness for you. I’m proud of you for staying true to yourself. Also, as a 19 y/o gay guy, your story gives me so much inspiration and hope that one day I’ll grow old and have kids and maybe grandchildren as well ❤

Yeah...see him 20 years ago, before it was ok to be gay. Trust me, I lived back then. He would have been one of the homophobes, I had to put up with in school and society, I guarantee you. Hes just accepting- because his son is now gay. Believe me, the LGBTQ+ community wasnt a thing back then, anyone "different" was shunned and treated like a nasty disease. Dont be fooled, once a phobic always a phobic.

I'm in my sixties now. Your father is how I wanted my father to be. Unfortunately that wasn't so. My father disowned me when i came out. He also told my straight brother's to forget about me. I was deeply hurt. But he made a choice, one that my mother stood by him on. I have navigated my life up the present, on my own. I have been independent, which I'm proud of. I accepted myself, and have been true to myself. I haven't lived a lie like some gay men do, by pretending to be straight. My life today is very different than it used to be. I don't live the gay lifestyle anymore, and have no interest in it. I'm at peace. I have been brutally violated in the past in a gay hate crime. I keep to myself, and i am wary of who i associate with.

One my straight brothers contacted me years ago , and told me what my father had said about me. And it wasn't good. He was ashamed to have a gay son. But I have lived my life as I am. How lucky and wonderful it is to live as a gay person today. Being gay isn't a lifestyle, i.e. a 'choice'. No one would choose to be something that is ridiculed, has less rights, costs more, and is not accepted by one's peers. If being gay were a choice, most gay people would simply choose to be heterosexual. As Chris' Dad said, he worries more about his gay son than he does his straight sons, and the violence you've suffered is evidence of that. My husband and I had a wonderful life together. He has since passed away, but I cherish every day that I am still alive. I don't live a flamboyant screaming queen way of life. In reality, that conduct is a small percentage of the gay community and growing smaller with every generation. I'm rarely recognized as being gay by the general public. OTOH, I am very proud to be a gay man.

I’m 54. My dad died 9 years ago. Never take it for granted that you can talk to your dad about this. My dad knew I was gay and both my parents were fine with it as long as I didn’t talk with them about it. There was no shame. I was able to have my boyfriend in front of them - just don’t ask don’t tell, I suppose was the unwritten rule. While my father and I were close we never were as close as you and your dad. Always appreciate how open and honest about yourself you can be with him. Many of us were not as fortunate.

Never did come out to my parents, but they loved my husband more than me. There just was never a need to discuss it. my mother told him that he never played with me when I was little. Mom took me out to buy boy toys LOL. So then i played trucks, trains, built stuff, sewed doll clothes, put on heels and nylons, knit. They were confused! Loved them so much and miss them. BTW I'm a physician and came out in medical school in the 70's.

The jury is still out on what actually causes people to be attracted to certain people and/or things, or lack thereof. Most of the theories that state that parenting directly influences what or who a person will be attracted to, have been discredited by modern science. There was a theory that an absent father is what made a son turn out gay. We now that is not the case with most gay men, and clearly not the case with Chris, here. Nowadays, people say it leads to daddy issues, but as you've pointed out, that is not the case here. We do not know what causes sexual orientation, we do not know what causes partner preference, kinks, fetishes, etc. There are theories, but most are not proven. The point of view of modern pscyhology is, something is only considered a sexual disorder if it is something can cause harm to the patient or to someone else, such as pedophilia. Being gay, bisexual, being attracted to older people, younger people (as long as they are adults), or specific things such as muscles, bellies, beards, etc. are not considered abnormal of by the standards of modern science, and there is no consensus on what causes these particular orientations and things.

@@jameseb89 To add to the whole debunked theory of "absentee fathers create gay people", I honestly think it was a pretty dumb theory to begin with for multiple reasons. For one, before it was debunked, there were plenty of out gay men whose fathers were not absent. But then the other reason you could tell it was a crackpot theory was because when people learned you didn't have an absent father, people would try and suggest "oh, I guess he just didn't show that much affection". Of course, if that didn't work, they would go down the road of "your father was TOO affectionate" or "your mother didn't love you enough so you sought after love in men", etc etc. until they could find something to pin down on what is "wrong with you". Shame is, people still probably believe those things, but even if they don't believe those specific things, there's still many people who think being gay is one of the worst things ever or whatnot and I think that's depressing. But I move past it because I have to, as unfortunate as it is that it is something I had to learn to move past.

I love this Q&A with your Dad and your Mom watching. I am 70 and came out to my family when I was 21. My brother didn't care and said he suspected, neither of my parents had suspected. My Dad was uncomfortable to say the least and said I was young and just experimenting, he and I never spoke about it again. I loved and respected him because he always treated me and my boyfriends/partners well. I knew he was aware of my truth so I never felt the need to talk with him again about being gay. My Mom did not handle the news well at first but eventually came around. I finally found my life partner when I was middle aged. My parents welcomed him into their home for holidays and many family meals. My Dad is gone now as is my wonderful life partner. Enjoy your boyfriend and loving family, the years pass by so quickly. Hey StanChris, as a rule I don't like or follow "UA-camrs." You are the only exception. You seem humble, kind and down to earth. It's refreshing especially for someone so gorgeous. And your dad is super cool. I wish my immediate fam was as cool as yours seems to have been when you came out. Cheers, blessings and love to you and yours, man! Keep up the amazing videos on here!

Love your Dad! My daughter is gay, she's 28 now and came out to us in middle school, she was so worried that we would not be happy about it, and I was like, I kind of knew your were, but didn't want to tell you before you told me. lol. Parents, support your kids no matter who they are, gay, straight, trans, etc.

You parents seem like my parents. I’ve found it’s so rare after talking to lots of guys. They’re good parents…yours I mean. My dad sees me in rubber clothing a lot these days lmao.

I hope that these days it's much easier to come out to your family. Not all families are accepting - I still hear stories of parents who disown their children - but hopefully more than in the past. As far as I'm concerned, if you disown your child because they are gay, then you have utterly failed as a parent. My parents died when I was 17, so I never had a chance to come out. I'm glad that your parents are so loving and accepting of you.
