Well, it IS partly about sex, too. Because it’s part of the titular characters’ being young, in love, and living in the moment. It’s much deeper than just sex, of course.
@@davidspingler6337 I'd definitely argue that. The song is about the uninhibited, freedom of youth and not taking it for granted. References to sex in the lyrics are to invoke that memory of when you were young enough to roll around in the back seat of a car. It's not about the actual act of intercourse. Saying it's about sex obscures the bigger and intended message...... hold onto that part of you that had no other concerns but to enjoy the now, before you know it those days will be gone.

Here’s some trivia for you. When he was first signed, the label thought his last name wouldn’t sell records, so they made his go by the name of John Cougar. He had a breakout song with ‘Hurt So Good’. Great video! After he became famous, he reverted back to his real last name of Melloncamp. He was one of the people responsible for Farm Aid, which was a concert to help out the farming community here in the US. This video was of him and his wife at the time. They used a special camera to make it seem like they were old home movies of the two of them. The song is about first love in a small town. Btw- he’s now in a long term relationship with actress Meg Ryan. (Yes, I’m a font of useless information) Cheers

Saw John Mellencamp at the Staples Center back not long after it opened. I had been wanting to go, but couldn’t find anyone me to go with me, so I didn’t buy tix. A couple days before the show, I checked to see if there were any tix available, and a whole row was open on the floor, about ten rows back. These were artist holdbacks that had been released to the public, so I took advantage and bought one tenth row seat for face value, and that was the first time I ever went to a concert by myself. When I got there, the whole row was still empty! Behind me was this really cute girl and her friend...it was her 21st birthday and this was her first concert and she loved JCM! So we chatted, drank, and partied a little while waiting. A few minutes later this guy come stumbling along...wasted drunk...and sits down next to me. It was also HIS birthday, but he had nose bleed seats with all his buddies, but they bought one of those cheap tenth row seats off a scalper for him to upgrade for his BD. Wasted, he asks me what’s up with all the empty seats, and wanting to crack a baller joke in front of the ladies, I joked that I had bought the whole row out for myself. 😂 He totally believed me, even after we all kept insisting we were just messing with him. It was hilarious. Awesome, awesome show, too. Almost 20 years ago. I was in my late 20s, and most of the crowd had grey hair, even back then. 😂 Love JMC, especially now that I live in a “Small Town” again now.

Fun fyi.... The girl who played Diane in the video was actually John Mellençamps wife and they had 2 children together. They gave since divorced but remain great friends. Try his song "Rain on the Scarecrow", "Small Town", "Little Pink Houses", "Cherry Bomb" all are great. He's a solo artist. Great humanitarian. Helped start farm side and passionate about helping farmers.

This song came out when I was in college. My boyfriend at the time was named Jack. After a while I got tired of of his fraternity brothers and their juvenile comments. It's still one of my favorite Mellencamp songs. Try Pink Houses next.

Happy Juneteenth bro! This is a song that was number one on my birthday (October 3, 1982). Interesting fact that Mick Ronson who played with David Bowie, played guitar on the song and the drum machine, John said that he borrowed it from the Bee Gees who were recording their album at the time. And the song is originally about the interracial couple but the record company (Universal then Mercury) forced him to changed the lyrics and with the video, he was making both Hurts So Good and Hand To Hold On To at the same time

My mom loved John "Cougar" Mellencamp. Grew up in the 90s with her driving us three kids around listening to John Mellencamp, Billy Joel, Rolling Stones and so many others. I'll always miss and love you mom. Coming up on one year without you in July. Think about you every day. Thank-you.

Big fan, bro. Indiana boy here. Mellencamp’s got a lotta great songs. Small Town is all about him, and Pink Houses is about some real shiiiii. Those 2 and Jack and Diane are his 3 biggest songs, commercially. I definitely recommend diving in, based on watching many of your reacts. Peace and chicken grease!

YES!!! Finally!!! You rock. No one reacts to Mellencamp. Thank you!!! John Mellencamp shouldn't have even lived past infancy. He was born with Spina Bifida and had a very risky surgery as an infant. He also had a heart attack at 42. He still smokes and does his thing. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2018. His music is about life in small town America. It's raw and real. You would love The Authority Song and Pink Houses, but ALL his music is good!!!

Surprised the overlords let you react to Mellencamp song. As many great song he has of 80's and 90's , Jack and Diane probably gets the most play on regular radio , other then Pink houses. So many great songs from Mellencamp that he should be honored with the best artists.
