Not sure if it's meant as a joke, but...Kinbg Whomps statement was basically meant as him talking about BRICKS! Whomps are basically sentient Bricks, and King Whomp sees himself as King of all Bricks, sentient or not. And since a lot of houses are made of bricks, he feels, bricks deserve way more credit. That's why he's angry.
Fun Fact: In the German version (which I played) the text is completely different. In this, Whomp basically just said, he's tasked by Bowser to take Mario out, before complaining about is back pain. The implication after defeating him, is that the Ground Pounds to his back cured said pain, and he grants Mario the Power Star out of gratitude...while exploding. So...they kinda wanted to paint Mario in a more helpful light?

Super mario galaxy also got rid of that exploit where you can ground pound through them, that made the whomp king a much easier boss then it already was. If you try that with whomp king from galaxy 2 tho, you will die.
