Daily Routines In Our Off Grid Shipping Containers

  • Every season living off grid will demand a different routine and I think summer is going to be my favorite. Waking up and walking down to the garden, playing on the tractor, making breakfast as a family, finally getting my sourdough starter off the ground... it's like somehow even while living in these moments I know that they are becoming memories I will cherish forever. This video is a compilation of about a week in my life as a stay at home mom with Max. Lou had a bunch going on between editing, construction, and picking up a friend at the airport who is here for a few weeks to help on the land. I hope you enjoy the slow living and the little moments :) I still look around my kitchen every day and feel so lucky to be baking and creating our meals in such a gorgeous space. I can't wait to show you how the office turns out soon! It's going to be another magical shipping container transformation.
    Big hugs,
    Dana

    Vet here! The fact that people question why Freya sleeps in a crate/if that's wrong just goes to show how clueless people are about animal behavior. Another aspect to the crate you didn't mention is that it allows Freya to let her guard down because she knows SHE'S safe. For animals, sleeping requires them to feel protected and the crate is an excellent way of providing that to a dog as smart as her. Also, the routine of it is so important for a working dog's brain. I could go on and on!

  • @annrobinson9336
    @annrobinson9336 9 місяців тому +53

    I thought you did a great job of explaining about the crate, and that Freya is a working line dog for those that did not know that. You showed patience and grace, as you always do. It is clear that Freya is greatly loved, and loves her work, as well!

    This makes so much sense that Freya needs to be crated so she actually gets rest. You're very smart about that and there's nothing wrong with the dog sleeping in a crate even if they're not a working dog.❤

    I never comment on any videos ever but I just need to say: I teared up so much during this video. I've been consistently following you guys since you've had Ody and just seeing where you are right now makes me so incredibly happy and inspires me like nothing else! My life has been a rollercoaster for the last few years and I had to move multiple times to get somewhere where I truly feel safe and at home (for the first time in my life) and I feel like I've just been growing along you guys so much because your videos have always been there for me as a source of comfort and inspiration during everything. I haven't been able to properly cook for a long time now (due to toxic living spaces pretty much) but I feel like I am finally getting there again and just seeing you make bread with max and lou and ahh just the way everything looks so peaceful up there makes me wanna try out so many things as well and also finally create the dream life I am picturing for myself!! :')) I can't even put it into words but you guys have probably been the biggest inspiration I've ever had in my life since I first started watching! I'm excited for everything that's to come in the future. Greetings from germany! 🥰

    Wild swimmer here from the wilderness of northern 🇨🇦 who also loves summer!! I get the vibe you described of going outside to check out the day, and puttering about on one’s property whilst soaking up some fresh air and daylight. Food seems fresher, outdoor activities are unlimited, the longer days give more time for hobbies, and outdoor yoyoing in the sunshine is the best (freestyle yoyoist and skill toy enthusiast here). Thanks for sharing all these little nuggets of your daily living. I am looking forward to more exciting home-cooking coming from your cozy kitchen (cookies?? 🍪) and also seeing your mushroom project move forward. Today we are picking, and then blanching and freezing all our green beans from the garden. Yesterday we did all the peas and broccoli. I love canning and preserving summer’s bounty at this time of the year. The leaves here are starting to turn colour… Ⓜary🇨🇦🌲

    Put a regular table in your outdoor space. You will like it more than s picnic table. You can put an indoor-outdoor rug under it and it will feel like a part of the home. Rather than just a outdoor space. I did this and it is my favorite place to have coffee.

    Carefull disrupting the roots of your newly growing plants. They can get what's called replant shock and die. Keep as much dirt and roots around each section of plant you're splitting while transferring to your garden.

    Great video this week - nice to see you settling into a homely routine. I smiled when I saw you walking with Max on your hip - that’s what I did when my daughter was small with her little hand holding on to my clothing. - when he look back I can’t remember when I last carried her and I feel nostalgic - so treasure every moment. Also I want to say that anyone who has watched how both you and Lou have loved and trained Freya could not question her treatment. It is a fact that a dog needs its own place where it feels relaxed, safe and as you said off duty - the cage is perfect for her to retire to sleep. Any respected dog trainer would tell you the same. Have a great week - practice will make perfect on the bread making 👏👏😊

    The trick is every time you use or discard some of your sourdough starter when you feed it again with more flour and water make sure that there’s more flour in there than is the volume of whatever your starter that’s left. you have to give it more than what’s in there. For example if the remaining starter is an inch high in the jar you would need to add a bit over another inch of flour and add enough water to make the consistency you like. Good luck.

    Great video! I am so surprised that people were concerned about Freya. My husband and I have been watching your channel since you were living in Berlin. And recently we always comment on how Freya has the dream dog situation in your current set up, for a big working dog, having all that land during the day and people around all the time is an amazing life for a dog. We never managed to crate train our tiny dog, but dogs who are properly crate trained usually love their crates, as their own peaceful place, which you explained really well. Our vet also told us that properly crate trained dogs get a lot less stressed if they have to stay at the vets for any reason; surgery etc.

    You guys have done such a great job with Freja. She is doing exactly what she wants and needs to do. People don’t realize crates are dogs safe places and resting zones. Especially when she is in place that’s such an awesome training skill. That is one i have not been able to master with my boys but they do down and stay when told so it works to an extent. Its hard to train two dogs in a small space lmao. Also one is an American bulldog and he’s super smart but is such a bully and pretends to not know what I’m saying lmao. My other dog is a heeler mix and he gets it in seconds so it’s been a joy to work with them. Good job on everything guys. I love watching your videos and see your growth. The way that Max actually mimicked you with the white shirt and tried to say "to the kitchen"! I am not sure you caught that, but honestly he is so smart and clever, and a quick learner. About Freya and the crate, I think for most of us Europeans, crating your dog is not a big thing here, I've always seen it as a very American thing to do. I know 3 different people with German Shepherds, and they have never and will never crate. That being said, Freya has been used to it since she was a pup, because you guys trained it with her, so I am sure she feels comfortable doing it.

  • @Fie.Franciska
    @Fie.Franciska 9 місяців тому

    People need to calm down with this whole crate business, I shared a video of our greyhound on Insta with his crate in the background and everyone went mad.. If a dog is crate trained, the crate is the correct size, there is no issue! Freya obviously needs cool down time otherwise she is constantly working and the crate is that space for her and she knows that. For our Parmi the crate was only used the first month after we adopted him as we got it recommended by the adoption agency (greyhounds from the racing industry is not house trained AT ALL, so everything is new to them when they get adopted out) so it was a safe space for him where he knew he was left alone in this new environment he was in when he needed it.
    I loved this video btw, your place is really coming together and you guys seem to fit in so well :) Love from New Zealand

    Freja looks powerfully healthy. I can totally relate to what you are saying about the crate being her downtime. She really is a working dog. Enjoyed this a lot, after what feels like my not seeing you for awhile.( big push for a lot of us, these past two months) Really liked the very quiet parts, that feel like getting a loving look into your quiet time. Max is having a wonderful experience with you as his mother. Truly blessed, on that land. I couldn't help but notice your pineapple-looking jars.( the texture) Where'd you get them? I have those same hooks here, in black, and your baskets as shelves are great. And i also thought of how much fun you could have with SCOBYs making kombucha. Making fruit leather with them, and rawhide chews for Freja. Congratulations on the sourdough! My big excitement currently is juice pulp bread that is a little like a loaded pumperknickel. Next up, is a "triple kimmel" version. Lovely to see you all, looking settled and home after so much work.

This forces the dough to rise upward instead of outward. But looks aren't everything- your reactions to the taste test say that you are on the right track!

    Working line dogs can be trained to sleep outside of a crate. But I don’t see anything wrong with her sleeping in a crate especially since she gets tons of mental and physical stimulation all day long. Everyone needs their sleep.

    Hi Dana, thanks for explaining about Freya and her sleeping in a crate. I dont know enough/nothing about dog training, let alone 'work line' dog training.
    To me, it just felt so sad she had to be in a crate. It looked small to me, for a big (hyper)active dog like Freya to have to stay in. And she looked so relieved (and bit scared) when she was released.
    But, thats all part of a work line dog, i guess. Wanting to protect her pack/family 24/7. That she might overwork herself, next to you not getting any more sleep ever again.
    Ofcourse there are sadly enough many many many animals that have it realy bad.
    And yes I worry about them, about factory farming animals, animals used for testing, for entertainment and for clothing, and... (I went vegan for a reason)
    Does that mean I cant ask 'critical' questions about the treatment of individual animals?
    Especially because you guys are vegan, I was realy and just wonder if and why it was in the best intrest of Freya.
    So again thanks for explaining.
    Stil not sure if Freya herself would prefer staying out and on the watch with more movement freedom...
    But I do understand that that will cost you your sleep, because in the woods always 'somebody' to bark/warn/scare away.

      They did an amazing job explaining how loved she is and how they have her best interest at heart. Freya needs to rest and not be defending the property all night. Its not just about keeping them awake but Freya needs rest too. Working dogs are very different than a lap dogs.

      A lot of dogs love their crates because they're just like dog houses. She explained it very well for those that don't understand or no anything about working dogs. The dog needs to rest and the crate gives her sequirity to do so. Dogs need sleep just like humans. do. Freya can't be on 24/7. I believe her completely that Freya goes in it even before it time to put her to bed because Freya wants to be in it. That dog has the best life. Freya is a very lucky dog to have them. I'm sorry but It's almost as ridiculous you questioning them about why that poor little baby has to sleep behind those wooden bars. Im sure he'd prefer to roam wild.

      That is a ridiculous comment.
      The vast majority of the world consider crates to be abusive and they are totally unnecessary.
      Millions of dogs around the world outside America (including working line dogs) live perfectly free, healthy, happy lives without being locked in a cell at night

    You guys are such beautiful lovely people, I love seeing your daily routine and your interactions with your beautiful baby. I want you to know that your joy can be complete by knowing Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the son of God, he was sent to Earth to redeem us from our sins so that we could have peace with God and with each other. You already live a good life, but you may not have a good relationship with God the father. He loves you so much and he created all the beauty around you that you enjoy so much every day. I'm hoping that this message will reach you and that it will touch your spirit so that you know that it is truth. God bless you and please feel free to respond if you would like
