24 Hours In Our Off Grid Shipping Container Home

- This video gives a big glimpse into daily life in our off-grid shipping container home. there were a lot of tiny home tasks that had to be done on this day like refilling our water tanks and charging our portable batteries. Most days Lou works a lot longer hours on construction, but it was really nice to get some quality time in and give him a haircut and take a family bath. Bathtub season won't be much longer, so I am so grateful to make a few more special summer memories.
Right now Max is in the process of dropping one nap, so on the days he takes two, he goes to bed much later. I feel like we're also going to get a bunch of questions about Lou's floor bed. When we first designed the shipping container the plan was for the loft bed to be a family bed. But after a few nights in the container, we realized everyone gets the best sleep in two separate beds. So Max and I are in the loft and Lou has his floor bed. It has worked out for us so well because Lou is still in the room to help us if we need it (especially helpful during cold weather when the fire needs tending to) but everyone is as rested as you can be with a 15 month old :)

Lou you should switch the empty canisters to face the opposite way so you don't have to keep checking which ones are full. just a tip.

Thanks for the new video! Would you guys be willing to talk about how much everything has cost up to this point and how it would compare to building a home on the same piece of land?
Can't help thinking that a wood cabin would have been way cheaper, less work and more ecofriendly. I am always dismayed by the huge amount of heavy equipment, large vehicles, plastic and metal materials and general ugliness of this build. The shipping containers seem horribly claustrophobic whilst taking up a lot of space. I live in 50 sq m appartment (no outdoor space) and it feels way more spacious than these 3 shipping containers.

Well, it's a good thing you don't live in it. It's their dream design, not yours. And it's very difficult to stay away from plastic and metals when this world is emersed with them.
Come on use your common sense. Do you need to be told which one is or would be cheaper?

plants (potato's) bloom and set seed to propagate-all part of the natural cycle. For those of us who want spuds its usually the precursor to the plants dying back which is our signal that we need to starting thinking about digging those nuggets. I'm in Ohio and its a good thing we usually have a window to dig the potatos because I still need to tend to them. Good luck!

In hindsight would you have got another container and put 2 bedrooms in it so that you could have a double room to be together and Max could have his own room x

I try to watch so I can support y’all. I love my simple life, but this is way to quite and tedious for me. I pay 70$ a month for prop tax and 20$ for county water, but I’ll take that over nature. Love watching your adventures!
Pinch off the flowers on your potato plants . Use the engery from flowering to your tubers ,
I read that when the plant in top of the potato dies its done. I think.
Why not put an IBC tote up above your roof line and use gravity to move water throughout your home. Seems like a lot of work with random hoses and military water jugs (pvc isn’t that expensive) cool outhouse / shower bath though
Cute video guys, I follow your channel since Oddie, it is so nice to whitness your growing family!! Just a quick comment. I live in the countryside (In Chile) and have an artisanal water system, witch is directly connected to my house's kitchen. I wonder why don't you try something like that, it would make everything easier if you could have water running in the containers. Also, we use a sewers free draining system, consisting in a series of treatment chambers which lead the water to the ground (and it makes it very fertile). There is so much green technology for countryside settlements now I wonder if you have check that out. If we have it in Southamerica I imagine you will too in the US. That is all I wanted to say, and greeting from the end of the world :) !

Pardon me for asking but with that spectacular storm, are your containers protected against lightning strikes?
I was also wondering this. if it was something they have done already. Have plans for it or if the insulation acts as a barrier. I grew up in the desert and we had intense lightning storms in the summers as well.
are you all planning to paint the containers? It would look a lot better on the outside.
I use to work with birthing mummas and always said you needed an extra arm. I wish I was there to hold your bubble at times x boy that rain was intense

Why didn't you guys do a couple of shipping containers as proper bedrooms? That way noone would have to sleep on the floors. With the amount of hard work he does, doesn't he deserve a proper bed?

It’s called attachment parenting. It’s intentional and extremely nurturing but very hard work. These guys have real grit and always always go for long term wins over quick and easy! They’ve definitely put M first and understand his needs come before their own.
@@alexandrachristiansen383 Not saying what they are doing in terms of parenting is wrong at all, as a parent i truly believe there is enough room for all types of parents and parenting styles but I wanted to mention something related to your comment. Maternal mental health is one of the key markers for many success factors in children (mental, physical health, development, social skills etcetc.). I'm not saying attachment parenting is not healthy mentally for mothers but the way you put it makes it sound like parents should always prioritize their children's needs over there, and that simply is not an ideal situation for the child. Respectful boundaries, children seeing their parents take care of themselves and eventually understanding that they as a child aren't the center of the universe helps prepare them for life. To the commenter above, it seems like they are practicing some Montessori principles (helping with every day tasks, avoiding baby talk and respecting the child) but also layered in with attachment style.
you ask what kind of parenting this is when you seem familiar with Montessori principles and attachment parenting - seems odd. I don’t speak of boundaries, seeing parents do their own thing nor do I mention anything about children learning they’re ‘not the centre of the universe’. You infer a lot in my comment.
parental ( not just maternal) mental health is vital to children. I don’t think I referred to this but neither did I say ignore your needs and only focus on your child.
You maybe jumped on my comment too much.
My remark merely points out that the parenting we see here is much harder work, having a child in close physical contact is harder given the practicalities. We’ve seen the comments about how much easier it would be to put M in a high chair but so we see him in one? If you watch the channel you will see that it’s quite common for this pair to do things their own way with their own ethos and reckoning.
I think you need to be less defensive to other peoples ideas about parenting particularly if you ask! There are a wide range of parenting styles that work just fine, putting your child’s needs first tho is a good starting principle. I don’t think that’s an extreme concept generally. Anything legalistic or extreme is usually just nonsense.

Just wanted to respond to the "their needs before yours" aspect of your comment to let people know in this thread that as a parent, it's ok if you come first sometimes. I think people forget is we see a curated view of this family's life and we can feel less than because we don't involve our children as much in our everyday, or maybe we work full time and our kid goes to daycare. Not meant at all to say what you are saying is wrong, just offering a different perspective
@@EmilyJahn that’s exactly what I’ve been saying, nothing legalistic or extreme… family life is a juggle of everyone’s needs including the parent. Little peoples needs are full on and they generally need to come first - the adults then fit in around that. As children grow things are easier, they can wait longer, they can accept other people, they can understand their parent has needs, they can co-operate and even help. It’s for all us to find what works. If you don’t find time for yourself as an adult you need to find that somehow or you will hit burnout. That might be asking for help or re looking at things and letting some things go, people abandon some tasks for self preservation. Being kind to each other as parents is important - reaching out to our friends and neighbours all help us get through. It does take a village sometimes and I think we forget that.
I think most people realise utube is heavily edited, curated and can give a false sense of reality. It’s common sense that a weeks worth of footage edited to 30 minutes will not reflect things exactly as they are.
I think most people want to help out if they know what they can do.

What an eye-sore to look at from outside. Inside is very nice. I prefer to live in a wood box rather than a tin can.
They are still working on creating their home. It's still a huge work in progress, they should be so proud of how much they have achieved and what they've created 🥰 with so many homeless people in the world, we shouldn't be so fixated on what a house looks like from the outside. If it's providing shelter and a place to call home, then that's the most important thing 🤗

The industrial look is part of the charm. Their build is more rustic than others and it's appealing to people who enjoy this aesthetic.
I appreciate how hard you're working, but Dana I was a nanny for many many years that is exactly how I held my babies on my hip you will get a bad back if you keep helicoptering that baby
I no electricity and solar power are going to be the most important things right now. Eventually I'd really like you to create an attractive facade for the outside and have it all painted at least semi uniform colors because it's looking a little ramshackle and I don't mean that mainly but when your baby gets older you know his friends are going to say stuff, you need to make it look nice. I think you should rally a bunch of friends and family up there to help you paint and get stuff done.
I know you will, all in due time, but really like to see your fix it up a little more.
You two love each other very much, but it seems like you live pretty isolated...the baby needs play mates .You guys should go meet some neighbors.
Why does Lou sleep on the floor? Why do you have to stay with Max when he has a nap? If you had a baby monitor, you could help Lou more. Max needs his own bed/cot. He needs his own independence.
I'm glad she doesn't have one of those annoying valley girl type accents!
