- The only way to keep the shipping container build going is to be able to keep the road somewhat functional this winter. We have a lot of supplies already up the mountain but still need more steel, insulation, doors, windows, wood, and other things as the construction unfolds. To make that possible, Lou needs to get the tractor capable of plowing the road, which is no small feat. This week's video is all about that story - his perseverance and a lot of Freja content :)

I cannot stress how impressive it is to see the fruit of all the training with freja!
It really does speak volumes on how likable you guys are and how amazing your storytelling is, bc I can’t really think fixing a tractor would normally be on my list of things I’d enjoy watching. But i definitely enjoyed it 😂

I have to say Lou has the patience of a saint while learning all these new skills. Have to point out that he is well researched in all the things he does, not afraid to try things and accepts any failures with grace and just keeps trying till the job gets done. The only way to learn is to try and maybe not succeed at first but eventually you will master it. A job well done in a person so young. You should be proud of yourself! Happy New Year to your family! To plow gravel driveway or any road/space that isn’t asphalt, take a 2 or 3 inch pvc pipe and cut it to the length of your plow. Use a saw to cut one side of the pipe lengthwise then slide it on the bottom of the plow. It’ll slow you to drop the plow and plow the snow without ripping up the ground or the plow digging into the ground.
Lou you are an inspiration to us all. Freya is adorable and maybe a coat could be good for her for the time she’s not running around and is getting cold.

Well done for beating the wheel bolts. They often get fitted with a 3/4 air gun to silly torque. So nearly impossible to remove with a breaker bar and extension. And steel becomes very brittle in freezing conditions. An old mechanic trick was to keep stuff warm on a running engine to avoid breakages. 😃😃
When you start to plow, back drag with your plow blade, don’t push the early snow. Do it until you build up a nice ice pack on top of your gravel base road and then thereafter you can plow without digging up your drive. Hope this helps.

Lou since you are going to a high torque spec, you should use a impact socket. They are built to handle higher specs. Also, while Pittsburgh is a fantastic brand from Harbor Freight, you have to be careful about their quality. Luckily, you should be able to replace any broken socket for free.

Nothing beats some good leverage when dealing with a stubborn bolt! Great job! If you have to use an socket adapter, I'd highly recommend one made for impact wrenches. They're a little bit more expensive, but they're heat treated to be much more durable. They're easy to differentiate because they usually have a matte black finish.
Are you reducing your sockets from half inch down to quarter? That might be part of the breaking. You can use a bit of white out or nail polish to mark the wheel nuts/bolts to the rim with a registration mark for a visual check that they’re loosening which might be handy to do. When working with equipment heat will be your best friend. Get even a small propane or Map gas torch. It is also good for fasteners that have loctite on them. For the tractor get a dedicated 3/4 inch drive socket and breaker bar. Preferable get impact rated sockets and adapters the standard metal chrome are never as strong as the impact rated.

It's raining again in Michigan. The snowstorm went through and we have had a very mild winter so far
Nice video well done, just for information not jumping on you, the long extension cuts the torque so you have to consider that, also you broke them again not jumping on you but Pittsburgh is not meant for extreme duty I've worked on semi's and equipment for 30 plus years buy good tools cry once. Most people would have quit and given up, you stuck it out! Stay safe and God bless

The adapter on your ratchet is definitely the weak point, it looks like you went from a 1/2 drive to 3/4, which would make the ratchet more powerful then your socket end. It happens, you didn't necessarily do anything wrong sometimes you got to use an adapter, that's what they are for😃 again love what you guys are doing!!

Not an expert, but my dad is. Unfortunately it's very common to break cheap mechanic's tools. After a certain point my dad had to get expensive stuff so that wouldn't happen as often.
Working on quality heavy equipment as you own, you cannot use Harbor Freight's Pittsburg or even Icon brand tools. You will need to "bite the bullet" and purchase quality like Snap-On or equivalent.. However they are very expensive. Buy quality once and save yourself the headache and possible injury.

That looks like you got Harbor Freight socket adapters, they are very poor quality. Instead of using an adapter when you need to torque something with a 1/2 drive torque wrench, you should get a 1/2 drive socket. That is the proper way to do it without breaking tools. If you have to use an adapter, I'd recommend using an impact adapter. They are meant to take that kind of load from an impact wrench.
If you have explained this,I apologize, but how are you going to connect the 3 containers?
They're not- separate spaces
As you figured out through trial and error, you really shouldn't use the 1/2" to 3/8" step down adapters for your socket with a breaker bar... It's a recipe for exactly what you discovered, i.e. the snapping at the shank. Do yourself a favor and get a dedicated set of 1/2" sockets, and impact-rated ones at that (tougher in general, but also handy if you do get an electric impact later).
Also, a word to the wise, always better to get vehicle/mechanical maintenance done before the cold sets in. Everything is harder both literally and figuratively once it's cold.
That's a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter. You really should be using a 1/2 inch socket, without the downsizing adapter
Those adapters suck, no matter the brand. It's kinda costly but it's much easier and better to have a 1/2 inch set of regular and deep well sockets. I think icon/ harbor freight has some good options.

With all that gear and huge Traktor I would rather build a nice wooden House with real rooms etc. it is also a much better energy then the material of these shipping containers. Maybe it is not allowed to build a real house? I think it will be a hassle as the containers are not connected to switch rooms I also think the heating situation is not really thought through because heating in every container? And everything with a baby? As I lived a long time off grid I had to carry every 2nd day 10 liter of water for 2 to 3 person drinking, cooking etc.shower not included because we lived by the ocean so salt bathing was it! If it is a little bit convenient you need a water tank or a well! In the end also power for internet as a you tuber.

As a 58 year old woman who knows nothing about tractors I found this video to be very educational and entertaining. Lou is just such a smart and kind human it seems. So willing to learn new things and tackle tough projects. Good on him!
Snow plowing is no joke and a lot of work and fuel. My ⅛ mile driveway just cost me $250 to have plowed! All for something that just disappears. The dry powder is pretty easy to push or blow but heavy wet snow is like cement. I hand shovel tons of snow also and it is the most aerobic exercise. Right up there with xcountry skiing. Good luck with your tractor. I'd tarp it in inclement weather.

A propane torch works wonders when working with stuck bolts…for next time. Also I have broken so many of those adapters, you are not alone. I have had better luck with impact adapters (they are usually black)

Good job getting the tractor going. Cheap tools (Chinese Pittsburg, etc) will let you down. Spend money on GOOD tools if you can. Also, chains for the front wheels make a HUGE difference. 4 wheel drive should equal 4 chains. I’m from Alaska, now living in Maine, and have used a lot of tractors with and without chains. The added expense is worth it. With heavy snow, when you angle the blade and plow, it will push your front end sideways without chains. You won’t regret having more traction than you need.

Next time try and heat the bolts up a little before trying to remove

Lou I remember having the same problem as you breaking the same tools while changing my car tires with my dad’s tools and wondered why I broke them with so little force. He said some of them are made with soft metal on purpose to avoid breaking whatever your torquing (so the tool will break before causing damage) so you need to make sure you use the right ones for the right job. Something like that… keep it up!
Buy the black impact rated socket adapters. Way better.

Sitting here procrastinating an essay but seeing how Lou spends hours researching and learning to fix his own stuff, and all the gruelling labour that goes into fixing a tractor, the essay doesn’t seem like such a big deal after all 😂

You can forgo the socket adapter by getting a 1/2" drive socket that will attach directly to your extension. If you must use an adapter, don't waste your money on the cheap junk. Get one made for use with impact wrenches, or buy a good name brand like Mac, Snap-on, or Matco. Probably cheaper than buying three Pittsburgh's.
