No, you misinterpreted a key component of the plot. Witches weren't said to be killing small children just to be able to fly around at night. There was a separate belief altogether about their ability to fly. Satan is effectively demonstrating that humanity is so inherently flawed and inferior that they'll destroy themselves without him (Satan) ever having to lift a finger.

What's interesting to me is each of the family has some relation to the Seven Sins. Mother: Envy Father: Pride Baby: Gluttony, as the mother is always saying the baby is hungry. Twins: Sloth and Wrath Thomasin: Greed, in the end Caleb: Lust Despite the movie is obviously about sin, that each one IS a sin, it makes them talking about everyone born a sin more poignant.
I swear if he doesn’t stop mixing up mortified and horrified... I will continue to watch his videos with great enjoyment and support him because he’s delightful. But grrrrr...
This movie portrayed the devil as a deceiver and liar in a very impressive way. The Devil asks Thomasin if she wanted to see the world, wanted the taste of butter, and if she wanted a pretty dress. We never see the witches leaving the forest, wearing anything (except for arguably two times that involved magic) , and the only thing we see them consume is blood. What was important was that Thomasin added her name to his book, not that he delivered on their deal.
If so, then I’d guess Pride: the dad Envy: the mom (yes it’s gross, but I think she kept accusing her of seducing her brother because she was jealous of her youth) Greed: the main chick (her “earthly desires) Lust: older boy Wrath: twin a Sloth: twin b Gluttony: the baby By the way this list is probably totally wrong. I haven’t even seen the movie,mi just watched a review of it. If I had to guess, these would be the sins.
Present day version of The Witch ending . . . Black Phillip: What does thou want? Thomasin: What canst thou give? Black Phillip: Wouldst thou like to be an influencer? Millions of subscribers? Wouldst thou like to live socially? Thomasin: Yes.

I bought the limited edition 4k collection of The Witch that was released yesterday. I watched the special features and I was surprised to hear that Robert Eggers thought his own film was overrated and didn't expect it to as well as he thought. He ran into so many problems during production due to budget issues and he hated the filming location. By the end of filming, he just wanted it to be over and hoped he could make enough money to get another project. Little did he know that this film would become successful and actually jumpstart his career.

This movie was a breath of fresh air for the "scary" movie genre. It was incredibly well executed and is captivating as long as you are prepared to watch. Don't expect worn out jump-scares and overplayed themes from The VVitch (The Witch), as this isn't your typical Friday-night scary movie. I don't know if high-class horror is a thing, but if it is, The VVitch (The Witch) easily takes that title. Every aspect of this movie exudes tantalizing aspects of history and folklore that were clearly and intentionally crafted together to give the viewer an overall sense of looming fear and constant nervousness. Overall, this is a beyond excellent and wonderfully made scary movie that easily lands the #2 spot on my top 5 scary movie list. As a self-proclaimed scary movie connoisseur, you can be assured that I recommend this movie to other friends who have a high-grade taste in film. I recommend that anyone who enjoys darker movies to give this film a chance. Put the kids to bed, put your phone down, get comfortable, and enjoy a delightfully dark trip into the nearly-forgotten past. You won't regret it!

@Anti Everything she'd be going to hell regardless so whether she's human or witch really doesn't matter. At least as a witch she'd get to live deliciously and not just sold to be a wife.
This wasn't horror, at least not to me. Horror is supposed to scare you, leave a mark. I love the 'slow burn' concept but this one did little more than make insinuations that built up to very little. I thought it was a well made movie and glad I watched it but it wasn't a horror to me at all.
One other thing I think, is that her name was "Thomasin", which is the female version of the name "Thomas", like her parents wanted their eldest child to be a boy, and not a girl who they treat as innately sinful.
There's a line from one of the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher that resonates with me when i think of this movie. "Some people fall from grace...others are pushed."
Thanks I was wondering what the purpose of the film was(but this helps make some sense of the plot). But I've heard about how food that might be rotten could cause hallucinations and thats why people were paranoid and accusing each other and stuff
The ending was actually shocking that she became what they thought of her I think those who died was be caused of their lack of fate and how they treated her I believed she actually knew about everything if they had listened to her they would still be alive the scene she was scared of the rabbit and when she argued with her father of the two children ability to speak to a goat which referred to as Lucifer stating,"evil comes in different forms"
I’ve watched the movie like three times, I literally never noticed the witch carrying the baby in the woods, I thought that was just supposed to be a spooky scenery😂
I consider myself a horror connoisseur and out of all of the horror masterpieces out there, this film is my favorite. I am a huge history buff and I love how historically accurate it is. I appreciate how the film displays 17th-century Puritan views of witchcraft, original sin, predestination, fear and condemnation of female sexuality, and so on. Unlike most recent horror films, The Witch doesn't rely on a supernatural character or villain. Instead, the family sows the seeds of their own self-destruction through ignorance, mistrust, pride, arrogance, and fear. The subsequent events only serve to reaffirm the beliefs, suspicions, and doubts that the parents (especially the mother) already had surrounding their oldest daughter (a blossoming young woman whose sexuality was seen as a threat ). This family never stood a chance as "The Devil" sensed the turmoil, doubt, and disbelief rampant in this family. As a result, it was easy for him to infiltrate the family through the naive children (those with the weakest faith) and then move on to his next victims. If you observe, each family member was picked off in order of their piety (or lack thereof ). This reflects the belief of the time that those who were weak in their faith were more susceptible to evil. Lastly, this film stands out to me because it displays widespread fears and beliefs that surrounded witchcraft and the devil at the time and manages to be scarier than any other horror film set in modern times. It goes to show you just how terrified 17th-century Americans must have been of witchcraft. It makes it easier to understand why people could have so easily been whipped up into a frenzy during the Salem witch trials. Food for thought.........

I don't really like witch movies that ham up the magic or the horror. I like how The Witch ends with a touch of the supernatural, and it's not the main focus of the movie.
I think this is the correct interpretation of the film. That's why the mother also gets hallucinations. And why Caleb becomes "possessed", when he in reality ate mold which drove him mad.
This is a real thing, had a relative that ingested mold that went to his brain, eating his ridgey white manner brain layer, causing mood swings, distrust in family, and hallucinations, and heard voices and scratching at night
I loved this movie, I loved the part where the witches were levitating. It briefly reminded me of that old painting of witches flying to their sabbath.
My friends and I went to see it as a last minute girls night choice. One guy stormed out of the theater yelling “this sucks!” And one man, sounded like a dad or something, yelled back “so does your mom!” And everyone could not stop laughing for a bit.
After the credits rolled, some old lady sitting behind me grumbled to her companion "Worst movie ever." At least they had the decency to wait until the credits rolled.
WATCH THIS MOVIE BEFORE YOU WATCH THE ENDING EXPLAINED IF YOURE SCROLLING WITHOUT FINISHING IT. It’s a great slow burn horror movie. Eggers also made “The Lighthouse” (amazing as well).
The 1st person to be executed for witchcraft was Alise Young in 1647 in Hartford, Connecticut. Life and faith was so much like the first half of this movie. I've heard theories that the whole family are suffering from ergot poisoning from the poor crop or their dwindling store, it was highly likely they were growing rye, as that was what was common. Ergot poisoning gets scarier until death, its what LSD was created from. Lots of hallucinations, bizarre behavior, even violence.
I have to say, thank you so much for uploading these videos. I have been struggling financially while in grad school for a while, and can't afford to see films in theaters/streaming services. So, thank you!
I always wondered if this was a play on the Seven Sins to some degree. Caleb = Lust (lusts after Thomasin and the witch in the forest) Father = Pride (refuses to admit there's issues and steals his wife's silver to stay where they are) Mother = Wrath (blames everyone for the situation in an angry manner and screams at her family and Thomasin routinely for the loss of her baby) Thomasin = Greed/Envy (she wanted something more and ultimately succumbs to this sin towards the end) Children = Gluttony (constantly eating more than they require and are clearly the fattest in the family) Sloth don't really seem to be at play here (although interestingly this is one of the most abstract and undefined sins), but you could argue the family was all guilty of committing a deadly sin which may have been what allowed the power for the black goat to exercise his power and control over the family and ultimately corrupt.
This movie was awesome, I loved how the vast majority of scenes keep you guessing and questioning at what's really going down until the very end. How just about everything happening is implied in a way to leave you skeptical.

Oooohhhhhh, jeez - you're right. Wow. That just, really sucks.😢
Here I am hoping she got to see the world
I found it quite interesting that there are 7 members in this family & they all represent the 7 deadly sins

Ah hes ESCANOR the sin of PRİDE
What do they each represent?
I don't think that theory holds up
If so, then I’d guess
Pride: the dad
Envy: the mom (yes it’s gross, but I think she kept accusing her of seducing her brother because she was jealous of her youth)
Greed: the main chick (her “earthly desires)
Lust: older boy
Wrath: twin a
Sloth: twin b
Gluttony: the baby

I love the way you wrote this. It's agreeable for sure.

To be honest I thought they were eating food that had mold in it and it drove them all crazy and the daughter was the last one left alive.
That was actually a theory on why the Salem witch trials occurred. Historians thought mold growing on their food caused hysteria and seizures.

The lighthouse is just confusing as hell. I like the witch way more.
“Where did they even get black Philip” got me so good for no reason
I have to say, thank you so much for uploading these videos. I have been struggling financially while in grad school for a while, and can't afford to see films in theaters/streaming services. So, thank you!
This movie was so eerie and I loved it. Chose to watch it late at night in the dark too
I always wondered if this was a play on the Seven Sins to some degree.
Caleb = Lust (lusts after Thomasin and the witch in the forest)
Father = Pride (refuses to admit there's issues and steals his wife's silver to stay where they are)
Mother = Wrath (blames everyone for the situation in an angry manner and screams at her family and Thomasin routinely for the loss of her baby)
Thomasin = Greed/Envy (she wanted something more and ultimately succumbs to this sin towards the end)
Children = Gluttony (constantly eating more than they require and are clearly the fattest in the family)
Sloth don't really seem to be at play here (although interestingly this is one of the most abstract and undefined sins), but you could argue the family was all guilty of committing a deadly sin which may have been what allowed the power for the black goat to exercise his power and control over the family and ultimately corrupt.
